Haikyuu is so great because it has all these quotes like "you can fly even higher", "the idle fleeting thought that he was a star crossed my mind", "as long as I'm here you're invincible" and you might think they are from a romance novel but no they're actually from a volleyball manga

tobio being around the same age younger than miwa as natsu to shoyo is actually killing me bc the parallels… the way natsu ends up playing volleyball inspired by her big bro’s love and tobio continued despite miwa quitting… the symbolism abt sibling dynamics… pain

no one can convince me that tsukkiyama isn't canon when yamaguchi's favorite food is soggy french fries and tsukki is the soggiest tall blond fry to ever exist, and in turn tsukki loves strawberry shortcake and yamaguchi's face/hair is unmistakably a whole strawberry

Thoughts about Coach Washijo’s granddaughter and the boys vball team in Shiratorizawa.
my haikyuu masterlist
Tumblr media
Coach Washijo’s granddaughter is really smart (the only one of her cousins who got into shiratorizawa through grades mind you)
But she doesn’t play a sport and prefers doing art
She’s in the art club
And she needs to complete a project for the school’s open house exhibition
She chose to do something on dynamic objects in everyday life
And of course, she needs a muse. Which she casually brings up in a conversation with her grandpa one day
The coach suggests that she use the vball team as a subject - they’re always bouncing around somehow, it’ll be a perfect way for her to explore movement and all that
And she’s like: why not, it’ll save her from having to work long hours in the hot sun too
The coach introduces her to the team
And thus begins her regular sit-ins during volleyball practice
And the guys start becoming super self-conscious
They’re worried they might not look “cool” enough
So for the first couple of sessions, all she sees is a bunch of guys mewling in her face, esp Goshiki - that guy looks super tensed up and slightly constipated
And their performance worsens too
So one day before the coach arrives, she plainly states to the team: “Don’t worry about looking lame or anything. I’ll paint what I see, and judging from the fact that you are already on the volleyball team, I’m sure you aren’t that lame.”
And surprisingly, that really boosts the guys’ confidence
The guys become truly focused in their game and she watches on in awe at the dedication and passion their have in honing their craft
And funnily, she has an eye for capturing fine details at first glance
So when the team does their drills, she can pinpoint what exactly they are doing wrongly and specifically what they can improve in (?)
If someone seems to be using less core strength than usual, not putting enough strength in their fingers, etc etc
It works to help the team, yknow
Also, it gives the team major whiplash to see her be so casual with their usually grouchy coach
Like once, she got the coach to pose so she could “make a sketch” for him
And she’d got the coach to make the sassiest poses everr (without any argument, btw)
”Yes, one hand on your hip, stick your hip out like this and lean your weight on this foot. Smile!”
The coach keeps the sketch btw
It’s really cute
She let the guys see the finished project before submitting it
She’d decided to bind all the paintings she’d made of the guys into a book, to be displayed on a stand at the exhibition
The guys swoon over it
And they (mainly Ushijima) get really interested in art and painting and stuff because of her
Tendou loves that she’d drawn him cute but kept his feral-ness
Ushijima doesn’t look that stone faced hallelujah
Goshiki looks determined, anyone viewing the painting can definitely feel the raw passion and eagerness radiating from him
Shirabu doesn’t look sulky (for once)
And secretly, she’d been painting a separate team portrait for the guys to keep
Which they treasure very much and hang up in the volleyball club room
Still there till now with their slogan
Irresistible force
Pictures are from Pinterest!
Tumblr media
^The first panel is how I think Coach Washijo would view the sketch of his sassy pose (feat Ushijima, cause I didn’t have the heart to cut the 2nd panel out)
Tumblr media
^And this is Ushijima as a mushroom
(Can you tell who my favourite Haikyuu character is yet? :3)

Tendou broke his phone and instead of buying a new one he just got his teammates walkie talkies.
- Semi huffs and accepts the walkie talkie with an eye roll. But, after the first week, pure childhood nostalgia has him in it's grips. It has him and Tendou routinely staying up till three chatting together.
He'll whip out his guitar when inspiration strikes and strum a new tune just to get everyone's reactions.
He had to use it for an emergency, he didn't have service at a party that got busted and luckily the walkie talkie worked. Reon went and got him out of there. The others were seen carrying theirs more often after that.
- Ushijima gives the team a morning announcement every day around six to tell them of the volleyball agenda.
He uses it when he can't find his phone, which happens more often than one would think, but his teammates are the only people he really needs to speak with so it works.
He doesn't converse much, but he enjoys hearing the others talk. Sometimes he lays in the dark, the walkie talkie resting on his pillow, his ear pressed against it, just listening to the comforting sound of Semi and Tendou talking until three am.
- Hayato grinned wildly when he received his, held it in the air, and cackled maniacally.
He always says the word "over" when using it and has given everyone code names. According to him, it's a crime not to do so.
He's constantly telling them puns he thought up and laughing afterwards without pause.
He is the resident gossip and information hub, many a conversation from him is started with "Guys! Guys! You'll never guess what just happened!"
- Reon tapes the button down around seven so they can all listen to his new morning mix together as he gets ready for the day.
He's known for trying out new restaurants on the fly so he'll shoot a quick message out to see if any of them want to join an impromptu meal with him.
Sometimes he leaves the volume up too loud, it can get really embarrassing, especially when Hayato says his puns and cackles like a hyena over the line.
Reon always wishes everyone a good night.
- Goshiki is excited, but he doesn't want to seem childish. It's only after Ushijima accepts his with a nod that he lets the stars fill his eyes as Tendou hands him one as well.
Semi doesn't know, but sometimes Goshiki will make up song lyrics for his tunes.
His first year friends are quite jealous that he has a direct line to Ushijima through a walkie talkie.
Goshiki loves his so much that he made a special spot for it on his bed side table and covered the back in stickers.
He even named it.
- Kawanishi leaves his off for the first three days before he gets an idea. His teammates aren't aware, but Kawanishi is amazing at impersonations. He strategically uses this ability to pull pranks on the others as he perfectly copies their voices.
Shirabu and him also use it for studying when they don't want to leave their dorm rooms. But they use a private channel. They aren't sure why they use it instead of their phones, but neither is willing to ask the question first.
He would never in person, but alone in his room he laughs hysterically at Hayato's puns and Tendou's ridiculous stories.
- Shirabu thinks its stupid. At first he just diligently listened to Ushijima's announcements. He started listening to Reon's morning mix. Then he learned that he felt less drained studying with Kawanishi this way. Now he actively absorbs all of Hayatos juciy gossip and always pauses if he can to fully focus on Semi's music. He even finds himself listening to Tendou and Semi talk till late into the night as well.
Shirabu ends up loving the damn thing. He really hates whoever is impersonating him though.
He's one hundred percent sure it's Tendou.
Eighty year old Shirabu finds the walkie talkie in a box in his attic.

Dad!Osamu who loves cooking for his kids.
He can't wait until his babies get home from school/daycare so he can test out new recipes that he knows they'll like regardless.
Dad!Osamu who can't wait for the day his kids are older and can properly help out at his restaurant.
Dad!Osamu who loves feeding you, especially when you're pregnant and have odd taste buds. He loves trying out new odd combos on you and seeing the look of satisfaction on your face.
Dad!Osamu who loves being a dad and thinks it's the best and most fulfilling thing to happen to him.

~Choose your own Ending~
You couldn’t believe Suna Rintaro right now.
Inviting Osamu Miya on the trip that was supposed to be Komori’s, Suna, and your special adventure.
How could he?
He called your name for the third time, turning himself to get your attention.
“I thought we’d have more fun with Osamu,” he tries, changing his approach to getting you to look at him. “You both get along when you try, there’s no reason why we can’t all go together.”
Is he serious? Your emotions boil over and you’re yelling before you can stop yourself.
“It’s not about how we can get along!”
“Why are you upset then?” Suna asks with narrowed eyes.
You grit your teeth.
“Because,” you spit. “This was our trip. This was supposed to be just us. But you. You invited someone else without even telling me.”
You scoff at Suna’s face turning blank. He understood at least. You weren’t going to just forgive him or forget this so easily though.
“Osamu?” you ask.
“Yeah?” He replies, after a flicker of unsureness crosses his face.
“Take over driving. I’m done.”
He doesn’t argue.
It doesn’t take long for you to swap driving duty and take a spot next to Komori in the back, who had watched everything unfold with concern for his friends. You were so glad he was here. All you wanted was to smoosh your face against his side for the rest of the drive.
He happily lets you take over his left side, occasionally offering food and talking quietly for only you to hear. You pass the rest of the day like this, and breath in the fresh air when you open your door to the beach.

Thinking about Haikyuu and the importance of representation. Take Shoyo as an example, seeing at an early age a short player like him who's perfectly capable of being on the court and becoming as eminent as tall players (even greater than them, perhaps); blocking, spiking, jumping, and even becoming an ace. Think about how much that affected Hinata and made him realize that he is capable too, that he too can be on the court, that he too can fly.

headcanon that kei and akiteru were raised by a single mom so kei learned to trust and look up to akiteru from a very young age, esp when he was lost and alone bc his big brother was all he knew… and at the end, the lies weren’t what hurt—it was knowing that akiteru was just as lost as he was :(

Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle Review
I am not a sports guy, never really was. I played baseball a bit as a kid, hardly keep up with major league sports, and couldn't really care less about who won the Stanley Cup. Maybe its the ridiculous amount of fanfare athletes get, or how male-dominated popular sports are, but I've never really been into sports.
Tumblr media
Yet, I really like sports anime. Like anybody on the internet in 2015, I heard about Haikyuu, and got into it pretty quickly. Though I wasn't as obsessed with it as I was with shows like Naruto or Hetalia, I watched up to season 2, and fairly enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
Smash-cut to this month, when a Haikyuu movie comes out, and is only out for a limited time. I think "Hey, it might be cool to go, but I'm not caught up with the anime...". But after getting assigned to make a tiktok covering an event for a journalism course, I knew that the stars aligned. It was fate: I had to see this movie, and cover it for marks.
Tumblr media
And so, after struggling to film a 'stand-up' in front of the theater for 20 minutes, waiting in the lounge for an hour, and eventually getting to sit down and see the thing, I can say that Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle was both an absolute delight to behold, and a bit of a disappointment.
Tumblr media
The Dumpster Battle takes place directly after the last episode of the fourth season, and shows Karasuno's explosive match against their long-time rivals, Nekoma, and the Spring Nationals tournament. After coming this far, both teams are desperate for a win, and pull out all the stops just for any type of advantage.
Tumblr media
Just like in the TV anime, the match is stretched out over the course of an hour and a bit, building tension slowly as points are won, strategies are formed, and flashbacks are shown. Without commercial breaks in between, what would normally be a few episodes comes together to form a cohesive whole that had me wondering what would happen next more than how much longer it would be.
Tumblr media
Its also quite impressive how much content they've managed to squeeze into this 85 minute movie. It somehow compresses and stretches time, to make parts of the match more exciting while skipping over ones that aren't. All the while, it shows clips of characters' backstories, artistic moments for dramatic effect, and flashes back to key moments in the anime to make a point, while keeping within the runtime of just under an hour and a half, is absolutely mystifying. Its a testament to how good the writing of the source material is (since this is a direct adaptation), but also to the power of editing in film.
Tumblr media
Though, that still doesn't hide the most glaring issue I have with this film: that it is pretty clearly multiple episodes stitched together. At least, it sure feels like it. Coming from a 5 day marathon of the third and fourth season, I've grown used to how the anime structures its episodes, and how its animation looks. Here, I could almost imagine the little bumpers playing at certain moments, or where it would cut to credits before the next episode. It doesn't really feel like its own piece, more like a few smaller ones put together without any openings or endings.
Tumblr media
On top of that, the animation quality is on par with the TV anime, which is a bit disappointing. Usually, when a TV show gets a movie, the budget is upped, and you can see it in how the animation changed. Shading gets more complex, characters look more detailed, and there are sequences which would be too expensive to do on a tv budget. Here, I didn't really see much of a change. Its pretty surreal, watching something on the big screen that looks pretty similar to what you just watched on your computer at home.
Tumblr media
Still, for the level of animation that's here, and the level that's usually in the anime, I can't complain much. Production IG really are the kings of sports anime, and this movie is just another jewel for their crown. The way they animate humans in motion is captivating, and I can't help but watch every set, spike, and block. Its quite realistic, and when they try to experiment more (like squashing and stretching limbs to make movements appear more snappy) it only enhances the beauty of the motion as a whole.
Tumblr media
The characters, as well, look good here, but especially the Nekoma guys, who haven't been shown much in focus for a while in the anime. Kenma, of course, is a standout, with how varied his expressions are (ironic, for someone who is so detached and quiet!). I loved getting to see him react to stuff, just as much as the Karasuno guys, with every success or failure. Wacky expressions, snappy comedy, and quick one-liners got more than a few laughs out of me, and in my theater, I certainly wasn't alone.
Tumblr media
I saw this in English, because I watch the English dub of the anime, and didn't want to get confused. I highly recommend this, as the voice actors did a fantastic job, going above and beyond in their respective roles. Hinata and Kageyama were and always are a joy, with their actors sounding exactly how you'd imagine from their faces alone. But (again), Kenma was a surprise stand-out, for how varied his actor's performance was. I haven't heard a voice actor yell like that since the first season of Attack on Titan, and for a character who is known for not being enthusiastic much, you can tell his actor was giving it his all in the booth.
Tumblr media
But above all else, the main thing that got me invested in this is how it continued the story. Seeing the boys again, this time on the big screen, was an absolute joy, and knowing that whoever lost the match would be going home kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I, as well as everyone else in the audience, had grown with these characters, and watched them grow in turn, seeing them learn new skills, face challenges, and get stronger. This movie felt like the culmination of everything up to this point, and there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air that is hard to describe. For what its worth, you couldn't have paid me to not see this movie.
Tumblr media
I don't watch sports. But for a movie continuing an epic underdog saga, with epic highs and lows, realistic character animation, over two dozen distinct and memorable characters that have their own mini-arcs, and a stellar English dub, I'll be there in the crowd, eager to watch.
Tumblr media
(Also shout-outs to that first-person scene with Kenma. Holy fuck... I couldn't fit it in anywhere, but know that it is ICONIC, and will forever be badass.)

either I’m just simply not seeing the discussions, or Asahi’s anxiety isn’t talked about enough. I’ve been kind of rewatching Haikyuu, and, in the 9th episode Daichi says he doesn’t care about how Asahi skipped practice for a month and about him “complaining about his anxiety”. Which I get, the intentions there are good, but as someone who struggles with anxiety, I’m bothered by the “idc” bit. it could just be me misunderstanding the true meaning behind his words, but this feels, idk, insensitive. anxiety is a really thing and it can be very crippling. it’s not something that just sits there in the background all the time. it can make what other people see as simple become impossible. as Suga said, Asahi is the type to shoulder all the blame.
and then there’s Nishinoya getting mad at Asahi for blaming himself instead of wanting Noya to get the ball back up for him. what a lot of people don’t understand, is that anxiety isn’t determined by what others think. even if all of Karasuno never blamed him once for their failures, if they were always understanding and patient with him, anxiety is always there, making him believe things are entirely his fault and that he’s no good at volleyball. it made volleyball not fun anymore for him. more specifically, Asahi seems to struggle with competition anxiety. which is something I can relate to. during a competition or game, the pressure of such is very high, and it increases the feelings of anxiety. this can make it hard to enjoy the sport, even during practice or non official matches. his anxiety is something that should be addressed more. and I get all the anime tropes etc but I wish they handled this a little better

Goshiki and Hinata calling each other by their first name is something special to me.
Just imagine all the things they went through together, those next couple of years, the camps they attended, and the matches they must have had.
It has me thinking about how they exchanged contact info back in their first year. Makes me imagine them going out for ramen and watching volleyball matches together. I can just see the two of them becoming a little too rowdy on the train in their excitement for the game.
They may be on different teams and countries now, but there is no doubt in my mind that these guys still contact each other on the regular.
They're besties.
