https://www.reuters.com/fact-check/irish-teacher-jailed-third-time-breaching-court-order-2024-09-16/
Tumblr media
Mad this. It literally says he got jailed for ignoring a court order telling him to stay away from the school - yet the headline says it's for not calling a kid they. He broke the court order cos he was being a self righteous stalkery Christian weirdo. I know the sort, they did the same to us at school cos we were scruffy poor unfortunates / desperate people that apparently needed god to save us. Loads of Christians are like this, proper weirdos.

"Data analysis and machine learning" versus "AI"
There's a trend to call everything AI these days. And while AI is technically a superset of Machine Learning, it's misleading because people think that there has been a huge step forwards in "intelligent machines".
There hasn't. There have been companies throwing large amounts of text and very complex models to train them to know which words are likely to come next (using huge amounts of electricity in the process, and brushing aside concerns about copyright and ownership). But that's about it.
It's hype. It's bullshit. And it's being over-applied to build excitement and get funding.
So, I'm cross-posting a Mastodon thread that I made:
Today in "this should probably have been labelled data analysis or machine learning": > AI reveals prostate cancer is not just one disease "They identified two distinct cancer groups among these patients using an AI technique called neural networks." - so, they did data analysis and categorisation 🧐 https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/news/artificial-intelligence-reveals-prostate-cancer-is-not-just-one-disease/
(toot)
"But it is only now, with advancements in artificial intelligence, that we have been able to show that there are actually two different subtypes at play" NEURAL NETWORKS ARE OLD TECH! It must be over a decade since deep neural networks really took off. This isn't some new "we can do awesome things now that gen AI came along" advancement 🙄
(toot)
Also, do the scientists not get annoyed at losing credit? It's not "AI discovered" any more than it used to be "calculator discovered". The algorithm did the analysis but the human turned data into knowledge to make the discovery. Did they say "scalpel discovers human anatomy"? No, because the scalpel was just a tool that the early surgeon-scientists were using!
(toot)
New rule: until the computer is processing the data by itself, picking the right algorithm and accurately explaining the novel results without human intervention then "AI" didn't discover ANYTHING!
(toot)
It probably shouldn't bother me as much as it does. But I used to work with a fantastic data science team. We're talking "specifically invited by large organisations and government to be a keynote speaker" levels of people. And we did some fun and interesting machine learning work. But we never once pretended that it was anything more than data analysis, number crunching and finding hidden patterns.
So, every time you read "AI does X" then remember that it's almost certainly just "scientists using data analysis did X" or "scientists using machine learning models that have been in use for a decade did X".

Ive been laughing at this screen rant headline for like a minute bc if you’ve read the robin lives series you know the line "finally gets the ending he deserves" isn't a compliment and then it ends with "hardcore fans thought they'd never see" Which very much reads as "You thought jasons characterization in the comics couldn't get any worse think again dipshit we've reached whole new levels of bullshit youd never even dream we'd reach"

an observation from Pride: there were Christians at the start and along the route who expressed Views about the event. some couched it in terms of God's love, some in terms of Hell. in one place there was a lot of screaming involved. and at the end, a minister and some of his congregants had come out with "BLESSED ARE THE FABULOUS" signs. christianity and homophobia aren't necessarily, and arguably shouldn't be, synonymous.

well YOUR driver is just as bad as the rest sayin whats happening at red bull doesn't concern him
https://x.com/RTBFsport/status/1765638079698915645?s=20
bet you feel like an idiot for calling out daniel now
Um... I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you do not speak French and got duped by that tweet’s sensationalist headline. As it happens, I do - so let me help you out:
Interviewer: "There is another element that could play in your favour, which is the mood at Red Bull is deteriorating whether we want it or not. With everything that happened, [in Ferrari] you are more relaxed. At some point of the season, this can play a part?" Charles: "Yes, but it's not... I just want to win fair and square on the track and to reach that goal, we have to focus on ourselves and try to understand what are the things to improve on the car. On this, we are fully focused on what we need to do, on our weaknesses and the weaknesses of the car. But as I've already said in Bahrain, we are very clear on what we need to improve on the car, and we are in a positive spiral with the team these days. Since the second part of last season, we really identified where we need to work and we saw immediate improvements and we need to do the same now." 🎥: RTBF Sport
First of all, the question itself is pretty distasteful. Sexual harassment allegations and workplace safety for women shouldn't be parsed down to "hey, do you think you can take advantage of this to drive faster than Red Bull?!" What a terrible, insensitive way to frame this whole situation.
As for Charles' answer, I'm not going to say it's the best answer in the world. Could he have used the opportunity to acknowledge the greater problem of sexual harassment and the safety of women working in F1? Absolutely, he could have done better. But he answered the question that he was asked, which was does he think the controversy surrounding Red Bull can be used to his advantage. He essentially said "no, I'd rather beat them fair and square by being the best team." At no point did he actually say "that stuff doesn't concern me." Nor did he call it "a lot of noise and distractions" and wish for all of this to "slowly go away" and praise Red Bull for how they are handling it.

Click-bait headlines are beneath a journal claiming to be “live science”. Without time travel, a statue dated to the 1st century A.D. can hardly be “from ancient Egypt”. But a statue contemporaneous with the Roman Empire is hardly surprising to find in the Roman Empire. Especially a part of the Roman Empire previous conquered by the Iranians and then the Macedonians. Frankly a Buddhist statue from the 3rd or the 2nd century B.C. would be more likely to find in Egypt.
This is just such a weird and fantastic find. If it were anywhere but Berenike, I'd wonder if it wasn't intrusive, but Berenike is so remote that that doesn't seem possible.

The thing that caught me a little is the wording in that one article. Why would Buck be jealous OF Eddie? Shouldn't he be jealous of Tommy stealing Buck's bff or something? What does Eddie have that Buck can be jealous of (and not about)?
Or you know, ignore me. It's just my brain and being sceptical. 😅
Yay for Bi-Buck though...
LOL I read it wrong at first too!!!
The headline for the promo for the article is misleading.
Tumblr media
It's with Eddie, the situation with Eddie.
Not jealous OF Eddie, but the fact that Eddie is now close to someone else, and Buck feels unsure of his place with him.
Almost like... 👀

Tumblr media
Google has recently updated its Privacy Policy. There is a new section in it that reads as follows:
Tumblr media
This is... incredibly vague. What counts as "publicly available information"?
According to this article, which dug a little deeper into the paragraph, search engines were already using the information on public pages to improve search results. This is nothing new, and in fact is how search engines work. With the update to the policy, the same information can now be used to feed to Google's machine learning models.
It is still unclear what falls under the category of "publicly available information," but it's implied to be anything picked up from a search engine. This means that as of right now, all of your private documents and other media stored on Google Drive are safe from data scrapers.
TL;DR: Google is using data from search results to improve their machine learning models (or A.I). As far as I can tell, this does not include documents or media stored on Google Drive.
If you want to unpublish your works that are currently publicly on the Internet, 256gb thumb drives are sold both online and in many large chain stores for around $20 USD. You can also save the files and back them up to an online file hosting service, although I don't have any recommendations right now because I just woke up.
Also please do not take this post as the gospel truth this is mother fucking Tumblr please please please go check several sources on your own I just wanted to give people the basic run down of what's going on
