SotWK Fancast: Henry Cavill as Mirion Thranduilion
Although all of his older brothers were kind to Legolas and cared for him in their own ways, Mirion was the most patient and tolerant of Legolas's hyperactive nature. He was rarely bothered by Legolas’s tendency to be underfoot, which meant endless nosy questions and constant requests of “can i come??”. Indeed, when Legolas was in his elfling stage, Mirion was the family member he succeeded at tagging along with most, even more than his parents, who could not always permit his presence due to the formal and serious nature of their work. (Which had grown more demanding since their earlier days of parenthood.)
It was through Mirion that Legolas learned much about their realm and their duties as a prince. Legolas has a very good memory, especially with names and faces, and he liked to impress Mirion by showing off how well he remembered the names of people he was introduced to, and places they visited together. Adult Legolas modeled Mirion’s example of humility, the belief that a prince is a servant of his King and therefore of the King’s people. That is why Legolas never flashed his royal title around, and was always willing to contribute and get his hands dirty.
Legolas’s devotion and loyalty to Aragorn was likely also influenced by Mirion. At the dawn of the Third Age, Mirion developed a strong friendship with Valandil, King of Arnor, whom he had met in his youth--the two shared a birth year! This led to an alliance between Arnor and Eryn Galen that lasted all the way to Eärendur's reign. Unfortunately, after the splitting of Arnor, relations gradually weakened. Upon meeting Aragorn, Legolas was happy to see the line of Isildur restored in him, remembering how much Valandil’s friendship meant to his brother.
Little Legolas liked to spend hours watching Mirion work in the forge, making weapons and armour. Although Legolas did not quite have a knack for metalsmithing, he had a very creative and artistic mind, and as a child he was enthusiastic about sketching up designs and presenting them to his brother. Occasionally, Mirion would take some of the elfling’s best sketches and implement them into his work. And as Legolas grew older, the two began to genuinely collaborate on weaponry for real use. Legolas's expertise in Elvish blades (remember how he was able to identify Orcrist on sight?) came from Mirion.
When he was a younger elf still learning and training to be a warrior, Legolas had in his mind that he wanted to fight using a broadsword, just like Mirion did. However, the brothers did not possess the same strengths, and Turhir (who oversaw Legolas's fight training) advised that Legolas's talents were better suited for short swords. It took a while for Legolas to overcome this disappointment, but with his older brothers' encouragement, he embraced his style of dual-sword fighting--especially after Mirion made and gifted him with a beautiful set of fighting knives, the ones he carried during the War of the Ring. Nonetheless, Legolas can still swing a pretty mean heavy sword in battle, because he learned from the best! (see BotFA)
Mirion’s son, Aranion, is similar to Legolas in personality and temperament, which made the two of them naturally close friends. After Mirion’s death, Legolas did his best to help fill the fatherly role Aranion needed in his life.  Legolas’s devotion to Mirion’s children was one of the main reasons why he never left Mirkwood, even during its darkest times, until his participation in the Fellowship.

Any headcanons on how the brothers are with infant and toddler Legolas? And their reactions to first seeing him?💙
I love talking about the brothers' relationship! <3 Thank you so much, Anon!
My fic "Greenleaf's Day Out" paints a pretty good picture of Legolas's relationship with his older brothers (and parents) during his childhood years. So for this Ask, let's focus on how it went when Legolas was just a little bundle of Elven joy!
The Thranduilions with Baby Brother Legolas
MIRION (253 years old at Legolas's birth). Mirion is The Baby Guy. The Born-to-Be-A-Dad (and Daddy, ahem-ahem, sorry). He loves all babies, and all babies love him! He took a hands-on interest in his younger brothers from the moment they were born, and Legolas was no exception. Babywearing is very much part of Silvan parenting, and Mirion would carry Baby Legolas around in a sling up against his chest for hours. When Gelir was a baby, Mirion tried to do the same with him, but Gelir was a wriggly infant, and not too fond of the practice. Baby Legolas, on the other hand, was happy to snuggle and would be lulled off to sleep within minutes of Mirion carrying him. It created such a bond between the two that Legolas grew up to view Mirion as a third parent, more than a brother. He always equated Mirion with safety.
TURHIR (205 years old at Legolas's birth). Babies, especially newborns, make Turhir a little nervous. When he was first introduced to Legolas, he held his new little brother for no more than a few seconds before passing him back to their mother. Babies are such treasures, yet so fragile in their infancy, that Turhir was self-conscious about his own strength around them. His hands were so used to combat and harsh activity, that a part of him felt they were unfit to handle something so precious as babies. He feels far more comfortable when they’ve reached toddler stage, can move on their own, and are not quite so helpless. Turhir did give his little brother a gift, however--a rocking cradle that he made himself, and very soon after that, a rocking horse.
ARVELLAS (153 years old at Legolas's birth). By the time Gelir and Legolas were born, Arvellas was at the peak of his academic interest in Elvish physiology and life cycles. It excited him to have access to a baby that he could closely observe as it grew and learned. With Gelir’s infancy, Arvellas was still hesitant to intrude in the business of childcare, but at Legolas's birth he eagerly volunteered to participate in the daily tasks. He spent a significant amount of time with Baby Legolas particularly during the first year of his life, and this extra attention and stimulation may have contributed to Legolas hitting his milestones earlier than his siblings, such as walking and talking.
GELIR (21 years old at Legolas's birth). Ohhh, Gelir was NOT a fan of being usurped by a baby brother. He was not yet quite fully grown himself when Legolas was born; the small age gap between them was unusual for Elves. He should have enjoyed several more decades of being the primary focus of his parents' and brothers' attention, and then suddenly an annoying little bundle of competition shows up?? Gelir struggled with this emotionally for a while, despite his family's best attempts to reassure him. While Legolas was a baby, Gelir did not want to have much to do with him. Having to compete for attention also likely influenced his boisterous, mischief-making personality, though it leveled out as he matured (somewhat). He also learned to appreciate Legolas much more once the baby was fully grown, and the two eventually became best friends and partners-in-crime.
Bonus headcanon: Legolas and Tauriel were born in the same year, but Legolas was slightly older, being born in the spring while Tauriel was an autumn baby.

4th Day of Yule: “Four Calling Birds”
Prince Arvellas Thranduilion x Reader
Third Age 247
Men-i-Naugrim, Eryn Galen
At first, the cacophony of merry calling, booming laughter, pounding hooves, and exploding snowbanks unsettled you. You had served in the House of Thranduil all your life, just as your parents had, and you frequently saw the king's sons around the palace. You thought you knew those princes well--or at least as well as a scribe-in-residence would reasonably be expected to know the royals. This morning however, you realized you had been given a unique opportunity to see the princes in a different light, released from the confines of court protocol and formalities.
Who would have thought those gentle-mannered, refined lords could be so… so… wild out in the…wild?
“No no no!!! I said I was not ready! That was foul play!” Young Prince Gelir sputtered, shaking off the mound of snow that had been dumped over his head by the shovel-sized hands of Prince Turhir. He clutched the silver mane of his horse to maintain his position on its saddleless back, while pawing furiously at his wet face. “You sneak! You rotten--”
You diverted your eyes, which had gone wide at the outburst of coarse verbiage from the prince’s mouth. Most of the cursing was drowned out by the taunting howls and cackles of Princes Mirion and Turhir, which were even more shocking sounds coming from the noble elder sons of King Thranduil. Noro! Noro! The deep voices shouted, and in thundering gallops all three riders vanished yet again behind the trees further down the Forest Road.
“What does that word mean?”
You turned to the littlest of the Thrandilions, Legolas, where he squirmed in his seat on the sleigh between you and Prince Arvellas. Thankfully, his brother, who had remained silent for most of the ride so far, spoke up to answer.
“Nothing you need to learn or utter for a while yet.” Arvellas shook his head and smiled. “In fact, I would advise you to avoid repeating any new words you hear coming out of Gelir’s mouth--especially when he is yelling them.”
Legolas scrunched up his nose and nodded. “All right.” The elfling leapt back up on his feet, despite being asked to sit down only a few minutes ago. You and Arvellas exchanged glances, and he raised his shoulders in a resigned shrug. It was probably too much to expect of a five-year-old to sit still, anyway.
Legolas had already pouted plenty over the fact that he had to ride in the sleigh instead of being allowed a steed of his own. You sympathized with his frustration at first-- until you witnessed the sort of risky play the princes liked to engage in. You adored horses, even though you did not ride or own one, but the princes’ giant Arrochs, taller than you by over two feet, wider than a bull elk and possessing unpredictable temperament, frightened you a little. The older princes seemed to wield full mastery over them, but even Gelir was just starting to learn, so you shared in the Queen’s reluctance to permit little Legolas to mount one just yet.
“Look up there, your High--Legolas!” You pointed towards the naked boughs of a nearby tree, where a curious tree mouse scrambled across a high overhanging branch to watch their sleigh pass by. “That one is called a skyrunner.”
The elfling oohed and ahhed with loud appreciation, as he did at every creature you pointed out to him. Seeing the unbridled enthusiasm of a child enjoying new woodland discoveries made you so very glad you pushed aside your nervousness and accepted Arvellas’s invitation to join them on their winter ride down the Men-i-Naugrim.
But being in the presence of the Scholar Prince in this situation, even surrounded by his boisterous siblings, challenged your ability to wrestle away unwanted thoughts about him. It was easier to think of yourself as his mere colleague when you were busy working side-by-side in the libraries, with piles of texts to fill your mind. You reasoned that Arvellas had asked you to come for the benefit of your wildlife expertise; no had yet surpassed you in the number of pages written to document the native flora and fauna of Eryn Galen.
And what a pleasure it was to travel through these woods with the princes! For no matter how loudly they hollered, how fiercely they threw snowballs at each other, or how savagely their horses charged in and out through the trees, the forest animals did not retreat from their chaos. In the many years you had dedicated to tracking the native beasts of this realm, you had never before seen so many different creatures and rare species all at once come out of hiding, drawn to the exuberant energy of the five Thranduilions.
You were so enraptured by the number of singing birds that perched on the sleigh’s front bow, and the squirrels that scrambled onto the backs of the pulling horses, and the one cheeky fox that crept up a delighted Legolas’s lap for some pets, that you did not immediately notice that Arvellas’s eyes were not on the wondrous sight of the gathered animals.  His gaze, perpetually kind and soft, and blue as the sunny winter skies, had settled solely on you.
When you looked up and your gaze finally crossed paths with his, a strange, completely unwilled squeak flew from your throat. Mortified with yourself, you scooted sideways on the cushioned bench to maximize the distance between you. Suddenly, his arm stretched out and his hand encased your fingers in a tender squeeze that sent a clear message.
You found yourself leaning close to the prince, drawn to him just like the woodland creatures were, goosebumps rippling over your skin when he whispered your name. His hand left yours to reach for your face, and your eyelids fluttered in anticipation.
“SNOW!!!” Legolas yelled happily, dropping back down in the center seat while you lurched away in time to avoid knocking heads. “It is snowing!”
At least the falling ice flakes kept the elfling completely oblivious! As you tried to gather your composure, the roar of laughter announced the return of the other princes. Three riders burst back out on the road ahead, but only Mirion drove his horse all the way up to the sleigh.
“Come on, honeg,” the eldest prince said, and stretched out his hand to Legolas.  “I will take you for a turn.”
The elfling jumped up so hastily he almost toppled off the sleigh. “Truly??”
“Are you sure that is wise?” Arvellas tried to say, even as Mirion yanked their littlest brother onto the Arroch’s back, securing the child in the circle of his arms.
“This is his opportunity.” You did not miss the twinkle in the Crown Prince’s eyes, and certainly not the indiscreet wink he tossed at Arvellas.  “And what can be wiser than seizing hold of every opportunity?”
They galloped off to rejoin Turhir and Gelir, and their merry band launched into a raucous song that faded with them into the distance, leaving behind the sleigh in the silence of the falling snow.
It took a very long minute before Arvellas finally broke that silence. “I apologize if this outing has not turned out to be quite what you expected,” he sighed.
“No… I suppose it hasn’t.” You took a deep breath, and something in the smell of the fresh snow and the way it brushed your cheeks gave you courage. Or perhaps the princes’ attitude of reckless abandon had pulled you in, too.
You scooted back across the bench, even closer this time, and snuggled in when Arvellas moved his arm to welcome you and draw you against the warmth of his chest. “Because I never would have dared expect anything as wonderful or perfect as this.”

Hi Naneth! Do you know and/or play D&D? So...I've recently started playing it and got addicted to the game (surprisingly for someone who's always been a bookworm than a gamer hehe), and now I can't help but be curious what would the Thranduillions (maybe bonus Thranduil and his wife?) be like as D&D characters (or what kind of characters would they create and play as during D&D sessions)? Ooooh, now I wonder what a Thranduillion D&D session would look like XD!
Omg it's amazing that you asked me this question, because literally just this morning I was chatting with my sister about her starting to play tabletop D&D with her old college buddies! I said to her, "Man I'm jealous and I wish I could join in, but I would just be so lost and confused and annoying because I'll need everything explained to me multiple times." XD My sister is also trying to get me to play BG3, and although it's really, really tempting, I'm afraid even venturing into that would take up what little free time I have left!
Anyway, going into your question that I LOVE so much, about what the Thranduilions would be like if they had a D&D session. Using my limited knowledge of the actual gameplay, it would go something like this:
The Royal House of Greenwood Plays Dungeons & Dragons
Characters Chosen
Everyone in the family prefers to play Elves but sometimes may choose a Half-Elf, Human, Dwarf, or Halfling. Legolas may dare to try controversial classes (i.e. dragonborn, half-orc), but only when their parents aren't playing.
Mirion: Barbarian. Values Strength.
Turhir: Paladin. Values Constitution.
Arvellas: Wizard. Values Wisdom.
Gelir: Ranger. Values Dexterity.
Legolas: Druid. Values Wisdom.
Thranduil: Rogue. Values Dexterity.
Maereth: Bard. Values Charisma.
Tumblr media
How They Would Play
The family likes to run the campaign as a group that quests together, rather than individuals, so they work together as a team.
Arvellas is the Dungeon Master mostly because he wrote the guide books and has by far the most organized brain among the brothers. He's also the calmest, most patient, and can keep his brothers in line in case things descend into chaos.
Legolas was the ringleader who initiated the idea to start/play this game in the first place. He begged and helped Arvellas to create the game books, with Arvellas wrangling Legolas's wild enthusiasm and all-over-the-place ideas into brilliant manuals. Legolas also crafted the dice, miniatures, and game boards himself, and he always has the most elaborately detailed character sheets.
Mirion is not much for this sort of game but is absolutely happy to humor Legolas and spend time with his family. Barely knows what is going on and essentially just follows what Legolas tells him he "has" to do. His character is often first to get injured or in trouble, but he laughs it off. Is eating an unholy amount of snacks the entire time.
Turhir is the tactical genius who thinks of creative ways to solve problems and defeat opponents. Mostly does his thing to keep the quest going and everyone alive, but also gives advice regarding combat tactics when asked. Is quietly the MVP of the campaign.
Gelir is just really annoyed by the concept of dice controlling his fate and blames lousy dice rolls a lot. Protests and argues against the "logic" of difficulty checks. Heckles any of his brothers who "mess up" (in his opinion). Chooses courses of action based on what's flashiest instead of what's wise. (He's much more strategic in real life, but this is a GAME. Plus he likes to mess with Legolas.)
Thranduil picks up on the game super quickly despite having the least experience. Frequently leaves the table to attend to crown business (or grab more wine). Assigns Turhir to play for him in his absence because they have the same mindset. Drinks a crazy amount of wine during the course of the game (it helps him relax) but still does not appear drunk, nor is his gameplay affected.
Maereth never gets into trouble (in the game) because literally everyone is half-focused on protecting her. Eventually she gently removes herself from the game so they can play for real without having to consider her. Helped Legolas make the dice, miniatures, and game boards.
I hope you (and all D&D/BG3 readers) enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Thank you for this very fun Ask! <3

Since Gelir and Legolas technically have the closest bond in part to how similar they are, how is Mirion and Legolas' bond? Oldest and youngest brother is such an unique relationship
I totally agree with you, Anon! The relationship between the oldest and youngest siblings carries something special.
As a parent irl, it's obviously wrong to play favorites with your kids, but as a fanfic writer, I'm gonna admit that Crown Prince Mirion is my personal favorite among my OC Thranduilions.
Mirion is about 250 years older than Legolas, so technically he's old enough to be his (very young) father. And he does take on a more fatherly role for Legolas compared to the other brothers, partly because sweet, adoring Legolas is more receptive to that paternal energy.
When Legolas was growing up, Mirion was the brother most willing to let him "tag along" as he went about his daily business, so Legolas learned a lot from observing him. Mirion's calm and steady demeanor is so different from Legolas's chaotic, arguably autistic energy, so Legolas eventually understood that he could never be like his hero big brother or do all the same things he did. Although this was disappointing for Legolas to realize, Mirion always encouraged him to be himself and embrace his own interests and talents.
Legolas's love, loyalty, and high respect for Aragorn was driven partly because Aragorn reminded him of Mirion. Legolas forever mourned the loss of the great king Mirion could have become, and was willing to die defending Aragorn's right to his own throne.
I think I showed the bond between Little Legolas and Mirion most (so far) in Chapter 5 of "Greenleaf's Day Out" (my OG SotWK fic!), "Royal Welcome".
There's also bits of Mirion showing care for Legolas and his other brothers in these fics:

Mirion is my number 1 fave and his relationship with Legolas is amazing. But how would Turhir or Arvellas be with Legolas when he was little
First of all: "Mirion is my number 1 fave"--MINE TOO MINE TOO I LOVE HIM. I love all my Thranduilions, but Mirion is my bae, my boo!
Tumblr media
*Ahem* Now regarding Turhir and Arvellas and their roles in little Legolas's childhood:
All of Legolas's brothers are mentors and guardians to him. They pass on whatever knowledge and skills they possess to him, for as long as Legolas is interested in learning.
Tuhrir, being known as "the strongest", is the warrior and protector of the family. He sees his role as the one to keep his brothers out of harm and danger. Part of this responsibility is ensuring they all have the knowledge and skills they need to defend themselves. Legolas actually learns most of his fighting skills from Turhir, not Thranduil (although Thranduil was the one who personally taught Turhir, so he still gets credit).
Arvellas, known as "the smartest", is the realm's best scholar. Now, Legolas is not very fond of "book learning", and his short attention span/neurodivergent qualities made his formal education even more of a challenge. But Arvellas was the one who took the extra time and care to find learning strategies that work best for young Legolas, and so he served as his primary tutor when he was growing up.
Both of these relationships are portrayed in Chapter 2 (Turhir) and Chapter 4 (Arvellas) of my fic, "Greenleaf's Day Out". :)
Thank you for your lovely message, Anon! I wish you well! <3

you do so much for fandom, i thought i'd turn the tables on your Trick or Treat event by showing up at your doorstep with a treat for you :)
part of my process for drawing characters i've not illustrated before is to dedicate a sketch to studying and understanding their features before going ahead with the actual piece. i can't tell you much of a boon it is for artists that you have face claims for each Thranduilion!
(i hope they look alright! please point out anything that doesn't line up with your vision!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING AND UNEXPECTED THING I'VE EVER RECEIVED!!!
I can tell you know the OC Thranduilions, because of the little details! Mirion smiling vs Turhir's resting frowny face! Gelir's smirky dimples! Arvellas's facial hair! I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
This is so kind and thoughtful and generous of you!! <3 When I place my actual commission order, I will definitely provide more info for you to work with that will give you more defining physical characteristics. :) But I'm blown away that you already have a head start on it!
Right now, I just can't decide whether to ask for a group picture of the 5, OR individual pictures, in "character reference sheets" style, because your detail work in character and clothing design is superb!
I might just ask for both individual and group pics, if I have enough funds for it. LOL. I just need to decide what to ask for first! :)

if you could 'borrow' one of your mutuals' ocs and introduce them to one of your ocs who would you pick and who would you introduce them to?
Eeek what an interesting Ask! <3 Thank you, Anon!
Okay, I am going to pick FIVE (there's no rule that says I can't, right?). I have so many talented writer friends who have created wonderful OCs, and to be honest I just haven't gotten around to reading about all of them. These are just a few OCs whom I know well enough and could immediately see as great "guest stars" in the SotWK AU.
TOLKIEN OCS I WOULD BORROW FROM MY MUTUALS:
@lathalea's Litha (a Dwarf-elleth) from "Dwalin Has A Bad Day". I would introduce this spunky yet sweet Dwelf lady to Elvenqueen Maereth. I'm certain Maereth would want to meet her and discuss how Mirkwood can help her people and end the bad blood that has formed between them.
@meluiloth's Findoron (an ellon). I admit I only know bits and pieces about this OC so far, but I think it would be interesting to see if his angst against the royal family couldn't be fixed somehow (even just a little bit?) by interactions with some of my OC Thranduilions. If not Queen Maereth herself, maybe Prince Mirion or Arvellas. It's very hard to hate those guys.
@from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras's Eadlin (a Rohirrim woman) from "Into the Breach". I had matched Eadlin to Prince Turhir Thranduilion in my OC Matchmaker game, but I honestly think a lovely platonic relationship could exist between these two, echoing Turhir's alliances and affection for Eadlin's ancient Northmen ancestors.
@missiemoosie's Baylee (a Hobbit lass) from "Her Dreams Became Nightmares". Moosie already created fanart featuring Baylee and Prince Gelir Thranduilion long ago, and I still think it would be awesome if the two could actually have a story together someday!
@scyllas-revenge's Beatrice (a modern girl) from "Burn Like Cold Iron". Gosh, I enjoy sassy, funny, silently kick-ass Bee and I would just LOVE for her to come to Mirkwood somehow and hang out with Thranduilions and see them through her eyes. Dunno how it would work timeline wise, but oh well.
BONUS: Other great OCs I have my eye on (I just need to read more, and you should check them out too!):
@dilettantefeminist's Sîrwen from "Cultivation"
@fishing4stars's Lossrilleth from "The Forest in Winter"
@softboiledwonderland's Anna from "Gifts of the Water"
@niennawept's Palariel from "Scars of Silver and Gold"
@lucifers-legions's Anael from "Garo Estel"
Okay, so this kind of got out of hand and unintentionally turned into a Fanfic Rec list. But... that's good, right? :)
GO TOLKIEN OCS GO!!!

Hi! I loved reading your headcanons on Arvellas and I was wondering if had some for Turhir? He's my favorite Thranduilion brother and I was just curious. No pressure to do this or anything if you don't want to. 😊Thank you!
Eeek! I am *so* happy when people ask me about Turhir, because I'm really trying to grow his little fanclub (I know you've consistently been on Team Turhir since Day 1 @stormchaser819, so bless you!), and here is another opportunity to give him a little marketing boost!
If anyone were to ask me who among the Thranduilions I would label "The Sexiest", the answer is easy. THIS Prince. They're all attractive of course, and certainly "sexy" is extremely subjective, but I hope my headcanons (and eventually, more fics!) can make my case for me. :)
Prince Turhir Thranduilion
15 Fun SotWK AU Headcanons
When Elvenqueen Maereth was pregnant with her second-born child, she carried so big and heavy, an outside observer would have thought she was carrying multiples. However, with Elven mothers having the foresight they do, Maereth knew it was just one future-prince. And she knew he would be a giant!
Maereth endured the hardest labor with Turhir--three whole days of active labor pains! Turhir was also the only child to stay significantly past his due date, and some might connect this to his special love and devotion to his mother. Turhir (“Victorious Master”) was also the only prince to have been named before he came out of the womb.
Turhir is the only prince to be taller than the Elvenking. Turhir is 7 feet, 6 inches while Thranduil is 7 feet, 3 inches. (The next tallest prince is Mirion at 7 feet.)
Turhir’s earliest childhood ambition was to be a member of the Kingsguard, so he could protect his parents, especially the mother he adores. However, this was a position unbefitting a royal prince, as his father would explain to him. The King suggested that he instead aspire to be the Master Trainer of Eryn Galen’s forces, a top position Turhir would eventually earn in TA 542.
Young Turhir was always keen on pleasing his parents, so it is difficult to know whether his lifelong career as a soldier was his genuine aspiration, or borne of a desire to please Thranduil, who took immense pride in Turhir’s natural military prowess.
Turhir has leonine agility and grace despite his immense size. When he walks or moves, he seems light as air and silent as a shadow, able to attack stealthily, while still striking with the force of a hill-troll.
But what makes Turhir a truly extraordinary warrior is his focus and precise control over his strength and skills. He never goes into blind rage, even in the heat of battle, but fights methodically, his every move measured and with intent. He has great knowledge about incapacitating opponents without killing them, or injuring someone (even of different races/physiologies) just a hairline shy of causing death. Although he will not hesitate to kill when necessary, he does not take pleasure in it; neither is he insensitive to loss of life.
Out of everyone in his family, Turhir is the most proficient hand-to-hand combatant, learning from the most veteran native Silvan warriors who specialize in this. He can fight with any weapon and can turn anything into a weapon (i.e. John Wick with a pencil), but he most favors polearms, ranging in size from lances to throwing javelins.
When Turhir was appointed prince-regent of Thangail in T.A. 280, he was the only prince to build his city of residence from the ground up (literally, he helped in its construction). His domicile in the north-west corner of Greenwood, Barad Aithron (“Tower of Spears”), is in fact a fortress that includes the largest barracks in the realm, housing the soldiers known as the Hedryn.
Around TA 300, Thranduil worked with Turhir to formally establish the Hedryn (“spear-throwers”), a division of Eryn Galen’s infantry that consisted of foot soldiers armed with shield and spear, similar to the Ancient Greeks’ hoplites. These soldiers were primarily trained to be deadly individual warriors, but also trained to fight as a unit in phalanx formation, on the rare occasions they deployed on an open field. Each single Hadron underwent rigorous training with their commander, Prince Turhir, before being accepted into the ranks. Although the Hedryn were dissolved soon after Turhir’s departure in TA 2601 (340 years before The Hobbit), much of their influence can still be seen in Mirkwood’s forces as they fought at the Battle of the Five Armies.
Turhir’s greatest passion outside of his military job is carpentry and joinery. He likes working with timber to construct things, especially buildings. He would often show up at community builds (even homes are built as a community effort), volunteering his labor as discreetly as possible so that gradually people just got used to the prince working alongside them.
Although Turhir generally tries to fly under the radar at the realm’s community celebrations, Eryn Galen’s annual “Teilien Laer” (summer games) is where he naturally shines, and allows himself the attention. Crowds gather to cheer on the display of physical prowess from all the Silvan Elves, but Turhir in particular is the main attraction in every event he participates in.
Turhir is a mysterious legend to the Dúnedain, specifically the Men of Arnor. Old songs passed down through the centuries tell of a great Elf-Knight, “Turoquen”, who won the great tournament held in the summer of TA 280 in Annúminas, celebrating the birth of Tarcil, grandson of King Eldacar. This was the first and only time Turhir ever participated in a tournament outside of his own realm, but it was enough to make a mark in history (although he is never truly credited in the songs and tales).
Turhir is on much more familiar terms with the various Northmen tribes who occupied the lands around Eryn Galen throughout the Third Age. Out of all the princes, he engaged the most with these peoples and formed relationships with them that lasted across centuries, including the Lôthéod (a tribe that preceded the Éothéod, the ancestors of the Rohirrim), and the shape-shifting ancestors of Beorn.
Turhir is one of the best horse masters in the Woodland Realm. He was responsible for propagating the arrochs, a very rare breed of giant horses descended from war steeds brought over from Valinor by the Host of the West. The arrochs were very few in number, allowing Turhir to personally break and train every single one that was birthed.
Thank you again for the Ask, @stormchaser819! <3 I apologize for the unexpected info dump; even I didn't realize I still had SO much to stay about this character! XD
While my fancast for Turhir is Sam Heughan, I also take inspiration from the following characters, especially in regards to his fighting style: Tarzan, Achilles (Troy 2004), and Nuada (Hellboy)

This was already enough to make me cry so the detailed one is going to be pure torture. 😭
Hi <3 I would love to know the details about Mirion’s death if you have the time :) pls don’t feel pressured ❤️ (also I remember you made a post on Turhir’s death but I can’t find it in the headcanon masterlist? sorry for the trouble!)
Hello my lovely Anon! This is unconscionably late, but I hope you're a Follower and still keeping an eye out for answers. Mirion is my personal favorite Thranduilion, so being asked about him means SO much! Thank you!
Tumblr media
Crown Prince Mirion, beloved firstborn son and heir of King Thranduil, died from poisoned wounds sustained in a sword fight against the Necromancer of Dol Guldur (aka Sauron) in Third Age 2063 (almost 900 years before The Hobbit).
Turning Mirion's sense of honor and duty against him and employing every method of deceit and seduction in his arsenal, Sauron--also called "The Deceiver"--lured the prince into a trap that locked them in one-on-one combat. Despite fighting for hours with terrible ferocity, even a powerful warrior like Mirion could not defeat Sauron on his own.
His strength and resilience, however, foiled Sauron's original plan to capture Thranduil's son and turn him into a weapon against his own family and people. Mirion gave back as much damage as Sauron dealt him, but black sorcery gave the Dark Lord the upper hand. Sauron was too weakened and depleted to enslave Mirion, but not to kill him.
Before Sauron could land the killing blow, Prince Turhir arrived with reinforcements and drove the sorcerer away. Turhir brought Mirion back to the arms of his wife Itarildë, but he had been too badly poisoned by Sauron's necromancy. Saving him was possible only at the cost of the healer's life. Unwilling to let anyone in his family make that sacrifice (certainly Itarildë, Maereth, or Arvellas would have been willing to), Mirion said his goodbyes and peacefully relinquished his fëa to Mandos.

I will write a more detailed post about Mirion's death very soon (someday I might even do a fic!), but I hope this satisfies your curiousity, Anon! <3 Thank you again for Asking!
By the way, Turhir does not die! (You might be thinking of Arvellas?) He.... um... disappears, sort of. Turhir and Gelir's fates contain too many spoilers for a few fics I have in progress, so I purposely am vague about those events. :)

Hiii! In sotwk-universe, do Thranduil and his wife have any daughters too? At any point in time?
<3
Hello my friend! Thank you for the question! :)
No biological daughters for Thranduil and Maereth, I'm afraid! This was not a super conscious choice on my part when I first conceived of the SotWK-AU (I kinda just fancied the idea of an all-boys household), but I continue to hold firm to this decision for two reasons:
To make the women they welcome into the family by marriage (i.e. daughters-in-law) even more valuable and precious. You can bet the Wives of the Thranduilions are extremely loved by the Elvenking and Queen as their own. That being said, I've only created one "official" wife (for Mirion), and I purposely leave the rest open/flexible for Reader Insert fun. Wanna marry into the family? I can fix that imagine up for ya!
To heighten the relationship and love Thranduil has for his "baby" granddaughter (one of his two OC grandchildren in the AU), Mirion's daughter, Anariel. This is an important plot element in the SotWK AU's "fix-it" version of both The Hobbit and The War of the Ring. (Spoiler alert: my WIP fic, "The Only Gold".... and it's a Fili x OC romance.)
Gosh, I really need to get my AU fics and headcanon stuff sorted. I don't know how my friends/followers still have the patience to keep up with me and the tangled mess I've woven.
But thank you so much for the Ask and the chance to talk a little about it! <3
