What's your favorite exhibit at the museum? And what's something you guys don't have out all the time that you wish more people could see?
So I guess this gives me a chance to fully explain how our lovely little spot is laid out for those of you who may be curious.
(A cross section of the Perisphere as it existed during the war, we have now converted this image into a brochure for the museum)
My favorite spot in the entire museum is the "ground" floor, where you enter the building from the Trylon and come out into what was the seating and speaking area. It's the largest floor in the building and the main sector of exhibits. Along every wall there is a special case exhibit for every hero that served within the Squadron.
The Exhibits start with the Crimson Avenger directly to the left of the door, going in chronological order every hero that appeared afterwards until it circles back around to the entrance. This is also where most of my work day is spent. As a tour guide and general historian I lead groups through our "extensive" tour.
The "Extensive" tour is the most expensive and most in depth option we offer. It's about 15 bucks per person with discounts for groups. I take you through every. single. exhibit in the building on a personally guided walking tour. It takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours depending on the group. It is designed for people who want to really sink their fingers into every exhibit and artifact we have to offer.
I am one of only two people on staff who gives these tours, because I am the only person who volunteered, when it was decided I had to be put on other duties later in the day they had to give the other poor girl a raise just to get her to agree. It is 2/3rds of what I do in a day. I get to give about 2 of them before I get traded off onto other duties. The first extensive tour starts at 9 AM and the last one finished at 6 PM.
My favorite singular exhibit is the alcove we have where all the members of the Freedom Fighters are shown. It has some of our best artifacts and, is actually frequented by the real life, actual, no shit Uncle Sam. He gives me a 15 minute break or so whenever I run into him as he regales the people with stories from the front lines and I get to watch people's reactions after I tell them that that is the actual, real life Uncle Sam.
My favorite singular CASE is actually further back in the 7 Soldiers area, where I get to see older folks realize that the Vigilante was country western star Greg Saunders.
As for things we don't keep out, while all the floors of the Perisphere itself are accessible to the public, the below ground areas that were once the labs and workshops are closed off and converted into our storage and study spaces. Every single scrap of ANYTHING that was in the building when it was turned over to our organization was filed away down there and a lot of it has gone VERY unsorted. Until SOMEONE (he knows who he is) convinced me to stick my neck out and get to doing it myself. After my lunch break for the final tour period I get rotated off and sent downstairs to sort through every little piece of garbage that the heroes of the past left behind.
When I tell you the things I have discovered.
I have seen the first line of Greg Saunders' most famous song scribbled on the inside of a candy bar wrapper. One of the words is different, implying to me that this was the first time he'd tried to write those words down.
A letter from Joan Williams to Jay Garrick with a lipstick kiss next to her name. I found this one on the same day of her funeral and I felt like a fucking knob. I have never been so guilty in my LIFE.
Books of Arthurian tales where Shining Knight has scribbled MST3K style corrections in the margins. His bookmark was an actual feather from his actual pegasus.
Some of the original notes Tarantula would later turn into field defining book. Before editing. Which means I now know which members of the team were AWFUL potty mouths.
An actual, labeled bottle of Miraclo pills. Still sealed. Nope. Nope, nope, nope, NOPE. For anyone asking if I was tempted I refer to you my post on Miraclo.
The problem of course being that a LOT of these artifacts are intensely personal and not just for us to keep and display. When I find something, and I find out what it IS, my job is then to attempt to return it to whoever it belongs to. I'm not just going to keep a love letter that was sent in confidence between the Garricks. And I sure as HELL was not going to fuck around with a sealed bottle of 70 year old super-pills.
So the last thing I do every day is compile a list of what I have found and what I think it IS, in a biiiggg excel spreadsheet, that I then send off to the modern JSA. Some of it gets donated to the museum, I'd say a slim majority of it gets taken off to be given out to the heroes themselves or their various next of kin.
THOSE are the moments I wish that I could share. To have their writing, their small comforts, their worries, their loves, their fears between my fingertips. More than once I have stumbled upon something that's left me deeply emotional in ways I don't think I can comfortably explain.
If I could show the whole world anything, it would be that. To be looking down at the handwriting of someone you thought was a legend. And instead see a scared, anxious 20 something risking it all because somebody had to.
Anyway, please feel free to ask other questions about the museum or my work here, I thought that'd be more of what this blog was but I am starting to suspect more everyday that this blog has breached multiversal containment ^^'

no one has really ever successfully had a story about miraclo addiction with specifically rick, although plenty of people have tried, which means that we get Certifiably Nuts moments like rick telling roy, a recovering heroin addict, that miraclo isn’t addictive anymore because it just goes into his bloodstream. and this is treated as a fact.

Hourman redesign
Rex Tyler, upon injection of the super drug, Miraclo he gains the power of an army! For one hour.
This modern redesign of Hourman was probably one of the hardest I've done for the JSA series, especially since I wasn't too happy with my first try.
If you have ideas for stuff to draw, hit me up, I guess.

Pull Me Through
Rick takes off the hourglass. Takes place right after the battle in Frenemies Chapter 13.
Rick Tyler/gn!reader
Warnings: Some withdrawal symptoms, Rick's having a bad time
"I'm okay, Beth. No scratches that I didn't already have," you said, lifting your left arm to illustrate your point.
But she still gave you a once over with the goggles just to be safe and confirmed what you said. You'd arrived late to the battle, so you didn't have as much opportunity to get injured. When she saw the x-ray of your broken arm, her eyes went wide as she realized it was about halfway healed. "You weren't kidding about speedster healing."
"Nope." You glanced over at Rick. He was there in the loft as well, resting on the couch and speaking with Dr. Chapel, who had pulled up a chair to sit near him. "You should go help your mom with Rick. He needs it more than we do."
Beth knew you were right. Rick was already having ill effects even while he had the hourglass on. According to what she'd read about his father's experience, Rick didn't have much more time to waste.
"I took it off, but I couldn't...I had to put it back on. It hurt so much," he said, his face shining with sweat.
"I've brought something to help with your symptoms. But Rick, even with medicine, this won't be easy."
"I understand." And he couldn't blame anyone but himself for what he was going through. Not even Ultra-Humanite, who planted the idea in his head. He made the choice to remove the limiter without talking to anyone else. He made the choice not to ask for help much sooner. "Let's just get this over with."
Rick looked at you, where you leaned against the table while talking to Yolanda and Courtney. He'd been sneaking glances since ever since you'd done your dramatic entrance and saved his ass from Cameron. He thought he wouldn't see you again after how he treated you, but there you were. And he selfishly wished you were there next to him because the thought of taking the hourglass off again had his heart beating even faster.
"I'll be keeping an eye on your vitals," Beth said as she brought everything up on her goggles and projected it into the air for her mother to see as well. Even after his readings a few days earlier, it was still a shock to see how high all of his numbers were. How was he living like this?
Rick watched while Dr. Chapel pulled a few items out of her bag, including a syringe and a small vial. His breathing quickened at the sight of it, and Beth's goggles easily read it as: FEAR. She laid a hand on his shoulder as he took off his left glove and pushed the sleeve up as far as he could, looking away as Bridget put on her gloves.
"We were really worried about you when we found out Ultra-Humanite was in town," Courtney said.
And Yolanda continued. "We know you were upset, but you should've told us. With everything that was going on–"
"I shouldn't have gone radio silent. I'm sorry. I'm just glad I got here in time to help." You turned from them and caught Rick's eyes. The fear there would've been clear, even if your father hadn't told you what he knew of Rex Tyler's struggles with Miraclo and the hourglass. He had to be going through hell, he had to know how close he was to the point of no return. A lump formed in your throat, and you addressed your friends again. "I'll be back in a minute, okay?"
You didn't even wait for an answer as you appeared at Rick's side, sitting on the empty part of the couch.
"Hey," he said softly once he processed your sudden presence. There was so much more that he wanted to say, but it wasn't the time.
"Hi." You carefully took his right hand in yours and gave it a squeeze. "You'll be okay, Rick. You'll make it through."
Rick could almost believe that, until he felt a dull poke at the crease of his elbow. Going against all of his instincts, he looked down at the needle and found that it bent in half. "Shit," he muttered. When he had the hourglass on, arrows bounced right off of him, so how could a needle do anything?
"Rick, we'll have to take the hourglass off first," Bridget said as she readied another syringe.
"Yeah." He kept his hand in yours, wrapping the other around the hourglass. Knowing what was coming, there was a moment where he hesitated before lifting the damn thing over his head and placing it in Beth's palm.
The pain hit even harder and faster than the last time, everywhere, but worse in his chest and head. Rick doubled over in his seat and screamed, his vision going red. All he could hear was his pounding heartbeat and the ringing in his ears. He couldn't think of or feel anything but the agony.
No, he wasn't going to make it through this.
Rick couldn't process anything happening around him, so he didn't realize that Yolanda and Courtney had rushed over to help you and Beth hold him down. He couldn't feel how tightly you were holding his hand or see the tears flooding your face at the sight of him in so much pain. He didn't even notice the needle go into his arm because he was rapidly losing consciousness.
"Rick?!" Your heart dropped when he slumped in his seat, not thinking to look at Beth's readouts as you felt for a pulse. Realizing he was simply passed out, you let out a breath.
"I didn't think it would be this bad," Yolanda said for everyone, her eyes welled up with tears as she silently prayed for him.
Rick was the one who always tried to be tough. He always shrugged off cuts and bruises and broken ribs, because he was supposed to be the strong member of the JSA. Seeing him like that, hearing him cry out in pain, was incredibly jarring.
"He'll be alright, he just needs some time for the medicine to take effect." Dr. Chapel assured you all as she pulled off her gloves. "He'll need to stay with someone for a few days."
"He can stay with me," you offered before Courtney could even open her mouth. "I have plenty of extra room, and if something goes wrong, I can get him to the hospital right away."
No one could argue with that logic.
Rick wasn't sure how long it had been when he woke up on the couch with a pounding head. But you were still there next to him, and Beth was perched up on his arm of the couch, while Yolanda and Courtney sat together on the floor.
He really hadn't expected all of you to stick around for him like that. He'd finally asked for support, and his family was giving it in spite of how much of a jerk he'd been.
"How are you feeling, Rick?" Beth asked, being the first to realize he was awake.
"Still like shit." His voice was a little rough, probably from the screaming. "But better."
"That's good." Courtney gave him a smile, relieved that her friend had made it. "Pat's coming to take you home so you can pack a bag. He'll drop you off at (Y/N)'s after."
"What?" Rick looked over at you with scrunched eyebrows, wondering if he'd heard that right.
"Beth's mom said you need to stay with someone until you've recovered. I don't mind."
"You don't have to–"
"But I want to. You don't need to be alone in that house right now." You squeezed his hand again and gave him a smile. "It's okay."
He just looked at you for a moment, wanting nothing more than to apologize for everything, but the sound of the door opening downstairs stopped that thought.
You let go of his hand and stood up from the couch. "I'll go get everything ready. See you in a bit."
You ran off, leaving Rick the chance to apologize to his friends at least, and to Pat once he made it up the steps.
His struggle wasn't over yet, but it was a start.
A song that is "ultimately about giving up on persevering alone and finding strength in asking for help" felt appropriate for his whole situation so 💕

Who do you think is faster? Owen Mercer or someone on Miraclo? (For reference, Rick Tyler could run up to about 60 mph when he first took it iirc)
I honestly cannot remember Owen Mercer's top speed but I have it noted in my notes that he can go at the speed of sound. He's no where near a classic speedster's level but he is damn fast in short bursts. So I really want to say he is faster than Rick.
#owen mercer#i am too tired to look through his comics but i am very sure he is much faster than 60mph

The last two or three notes I have on this duo story of Hourman and Mister Terrific: Mister Terrific had his back-up feature in the pages Sensation Comics ended in March of 1947. But as I've already established, Mister Terrific doesn't retire until 1951/1952. So to reconcile that, this Hourman and Mister Terrific comic would have an eight to ten page back-up story every issue, until we've covered Mister Terrific's career from April 1947 to whenever the JSA diabands in 1951/when Mister Terrific gets busted for still doing vigilante stuff in 1952.
Also, Hourman's back-up feature in Adventure Comics ended in February of 1943. But Hourman only retires in like April or May of 1948. So he would also have a back-up feature in the pages of my Hourman and Mister Terrific comic, so we could get ten page comics exploring the adventures of Hourman from March 1943 to April or May of 1948, when Rex Tyler finally retires from superhero work. So that's a whole five years worth of extra material for both Hourman and Mister Terrific. Dedicated to Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily and Charles Reizenetein and Hal Sharp, respectively.
Finally, One of their recurring villians throughout the decades would be Regina Bannerman, the daughter of Rex's old boss at Bannerman Chemical. Her father retired in 1955, and so she inherited the company. But when Terry Sloane buys it out and makes it become Tyler Chemical instead in 1958, Regina loses it. In 1958, she first fights Hourman and Mister Terrific, trying to get at Rex Tyler and Terry Sloane. In 1962, she finally realized that Rex Tyler and Terry Sloane were actually the secret identities of Hourman and Mister Terrific, and she begins trying to use that to her advantage.
And after Hourman has a son in 1966, well… Regina kidnapped Rick Tyler and tried to kill him. Thankfully, Hourman and Mister Terrific manage to get the Justice Society's help, and Rick Tyler is saved. But this is around the time that the Justice Society members begin realizing it's too dangerous to bring their children into their lives as superheroes. Rex Tyler begins trying to hide his life as Hourman from his son, not wanting his son to be ever put in danger ever again. He doesn't his son to get hurt…
But Regina Bannerman continues trying to strike at Hourman and Mister Terrific for decades. She can't get over her grudge. And long into her old age, she continues trying to mess with them. In fact, it's because of her that Rick Tyler has to become Hourman II. She kidnaps Rex and Terry in 1985, and she tries to kill them for revenge. Infinity Inc and the JSA rush to try and save them, but it's Rick Tyler (working all on his own) who manages to steal a miraclo pill and save his parents. In that fight, Regina finally dies. But she dies after accidentally chasing Rick right into the path of her own deathtrap.

hug, friend, snow, and why for the WIP game!
Oh I like these ones, thank you!
hug
He tried to put all this out of his mind as he watched Sophia park the car. Alex practically jumped out and hurtled towards him with a speed he envied, tackling him in a hug and knocking the air out of him.
This is from my 'Alex & Daniel' fic - for context, Alex is Jack Thompson's granddaughter who grew up regarding the Carter-Sousas as family, and in this story is eight years old and going to stay with her Uncle Daniel for the day.
friend
“What makes you think there’s anything to find? You’d have remembered if she was a childhood friend, wouldn’t you? She’s probably just some random girl who looks similar to a celebrity or something.”
From my 'Tory is a Barnes AU' - in which Alex is sceptical about Elaine's instincts regarding the other girl (but he'll eat his words soon enough).
snow - afraid I couldn't find snow in any of my wips so here's some ice instead!
Beside him was Len, angry and grieving and firing ice at the Reverse-Flash – between Len’s gun and Miraclo running through Rex’s veins they’d done a good job at holding the Reverse-Flash off.
From my Legends AU in which Rex Tyler isn't wiped from existence and instead stays around to help the Legends and tries to be strong - except he's not doing so well and grieving the versions of the team he'd known and befriended before they were wiped out by the Legion of Doom.
why
Which was why he hadn’t noticed LaRusso and Lawrence coming the other way – and the two men hadn’t noticed him either, so when LaRusso had looked up and seen him— He’d gone bone white. Then he’d punched Mike in the face.
Remember in my Leah Barnes fic when she mentioned that it would be more understandable for Daniel to freak out about Mike if it was a chance encounter in the street? In this one this is what happens (sorry Mike) - this is from a fic that started out with the intention of shooting down the idea of Mike teaching karate (which has me so confused like it was a good thing when you didn't have him involved in karate and had him move on with his life and now you're doing a 180 on that?? Why??) but now I'm not entirely sure where the fic is going so we'll have to see.
send me a word or several and i'll tell you if they're in my wips!

Infinity Inc.
Stargirl strikes out on her own and forms her generation’s Infinity Inc.
Stargirl, Courtney Whitmore
Doctor Midnight, Beth Chapel
Tick-Tock, Jimmy Martin
Cyclone, Maxine Hunkel
Red Arrow, Emiko Queen
Tomcat, Tom Bronson
Air Wave, Harold Jordan
Aided by Emiko Queen's family fortune they create a storefront for their team, selling their likenesses to fuel their fight against evil. They take a more public facing/engaging approach to hero work, attempting to be more transparent than previous groups. However, this comes with its own setbacks and responsibilities. Beth Chapel has returned from the dead and encourages the team to not repeat past mistakes. Tick-Tock takes personal responsibilty for the misuse of Miraclo by the US government. Cyclone goes where the wind takes her. Tom is a role model for all atypical meta-humans. Air Wave reconstitutes himself in time to help the team communicate their message to the world.

So forgive me if this is too broad a question... but you mentioned recently that Jay Garrick is 106. And I know Alan Scott, Ted Grant, and Ma Hunkle are all still alive. And even for the wartime heroes who have since passed on, a lot of them seem to have had children who can't be older than 30 like Jack Knight or Jade and Obsidian.
Do super-powers just make people age slower? But how does that apply to their spouses? Joan Garrick seems nearly as vital as her husband when I've seen her interviewed.
Oh. Right. This wasn't publically available news to a lot of people. Or rather while it was publically available it wasn't widely broadcast. Joan Garrick passed away, only a few months earlier this year, at the age of 102 after a sudden worsening of condition from a minor fall. She is buried in Valhalla Cemetery in upstate New York where her husband's plot waits beside her. Her funeral was a well attended but private ceremony with representatives from every group and generation of superheroes. I am told the speech by Kid Flash, formerly Impulse, was particularly beautiful.
As for how a woman of her kind reached the age of 102, how her husband goes strong at 106 and why so many of his contemporaries are still with us, that comes down to a single event on June 29th of 1941.
(Battle between the Justice Society and the villainous Ian Karkull, photograph published by the New York Times)
Ian Karkull was a former archeologist who discovered the remains of the lost city of Rangor somewhere in modern day Algeria where he discovered various lost sciences and mysticism that also drove him quite mad. Upon returning to civilization he fought against Dr. Fate many times and was, before this event, presumed dead.
Having instead retreated to the mystical realm known as the Shadowlands, Karkull had discovered through means unknown the identities of the next 9 Presidents of the United States after Franklin Roosevelt. Assembling a group of villains including mobster Alexander the Great, Tigress, Doctor Doog, Lightning Master, Sieur Satan, Tarantula (not to be confused with the All Star Squadron member of the same name), Wotan and Zachary Zor. He sent each of them across the country to assassinate each man where they were stopped by the present members of the Justice Society. When each villain was stopped (save for Wotan, who DID kill his target, try not to think about the implications of that too much) the JSA assembled in New York to do battle with Karkull himself where their combined onslaught overwhelmed his ability to contain the shadow energy his body was made up of, exploding over the assembled heroes. This magical detonation is assumed to be the cause of these heroes' extended longevity, the heroes present being The Atom, Doctor Fate, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Hourman, Johnny Thunder, Sandman, The Spectre, Starman and The Flash's then girlfriend Joan Williams.
These heroes aged remarkably slowly in the following decades though most have since passed away in the line of duty or via mechanisms of age once their extended years did indeed begin catching up with them in other ways (a la Johnny Thunder's Alzheimer's diagnosis and eventual death).
This was one of the Society's most consequential battles in general, since its events directly lead to Starman joining the JSA in full, Dr. Fate foregoing the Helmet of Nabu in future battles, Hourman entering semi-retirement due to the health effects of Miraclo and Green Lantern stepping back from active membership out of guilt in his inability to stop Wotan from killing a small child.
On the other hand, Maxine Hunkel is just 100% like that. Death has not taken her because Death does not dare to approach her until she is good and goddamn ready.
