up in our bedroom by @steeseman
(minnie's holy grail: 4/?)
now in hard cover and litfic paper back!
i have been hardcore riding for this fic since april i think, and everytime it updated i would be in the comments yapping my heart away, because this is what that fic inspires in me: worms.
i think that if you want a canon adjacent fic, this fic would be your best bet. because to me, this is canon. it not only references what happened in plane show but also it IMPROVES on it by fleshing out gale's character and making bucky seem so much more real and human. both of the characters come away from this fic so much richer than you could have ever imagined
i'm a sucker for bucky angst, and this fic hurts both him and gale but. god can i tell you. its worth it. you will feel like your heart's being stepped on again and again for 8 chapters straight, but hold on, because it'll be so worth it. a true love story for the ages that shows you the nuances, the heartbreaks but most importantly, what is worth fighting for
or maybe im reccing it for the smut. partly that too
anyway, i had to run to finish this as soon as i read ch 8 and ch9, so if you really want to hear my thoughts, scroll to the last chapter on ao3 and read my essay.
thank you steeseman. so much. your fic made my year actually, waiting for notifs was like waiting for a really good package in the mail <3
more details under the cut, if youre interested!

hi hello heres another snippet of the spooky ocean boys novel (i say novel with grand hopes) (really its. like one out of a handful of halfway complete scenes but no one needs to know this)
“Minerva!”
Micah’s shout echoes out over roiling waters, nearly swallowed up beneath the sound of the crashing waves. Gusts of torrential rain pelt him in a sideways downpour as he struggles to stand on the dock, blind to anything other than the black sea raging around him.
“Minerva!” he cries out again, hoping for a response, something, a hand thrusting up from the water, a call for help. His throat is hoarse, voice growing ragged, mouth full of salt spray and rain. The horror of watching her body being snatched off the docks as though she were made from cloth plays on a loop in his mind, the calmness of her expression as she went sticking out sharply in each iteration. Her gaze found him in that split second before she disappeared under the foamy surge, following him all the way up until its jagged teeth enclosed around her head. She had been smiling.
He calls a third time, the cry dying halfheartedly in his chest. Panic settles thick and cloying within his chest, cutting off whatever words remained. The great, milky white eye of the thing had rolled and twisted in its gaping socket, seeming to focus in on him before it crashed below once more. He feels the memory of its stare like a brand on his skin. Had there been sentience behind that sour opalescence? Intent?
There must be something he could do. Wildly he spins around, searching the dock. Behind the tiny fisherman’s shack bobbed a lifeboat, straining against the singular frayed rope tying it to its post. There were no oars, but he highly doubted it mattered. He could think only of her wrinkled face, and what she had told him the last time they met in her darkened living room three nights before.
Clutching his arms to his stomach, he takes a step forward towards the boat. Immediately the gale buffets him back, filling his eyes with a spray of salt. With a shout he tumbles back off the slippery planks, twisting just in time to watch the dark water coming up to meet him.
A hand grabs the back of his jacket, yanking him up. Micah falls sideways, slamming his chin down on the dock mere inches away from a cluster of rusted nails sticking out from a piece of rotted wood. There is a voice behind him saying something unintelligible, and then without warning he’s dragged to his feet, mouth full of copper and stinging eyes shut tight. He wobbles unseeing in the direction of the forceful tug, soaked shoes barely finding purchase. A backwards shove forces him across the dock and he trips, falling this time onto a pile of dry and knotted cords smelling strongly of fish.
A door slams shut overhead. It’s as if with the flick of a switch the storm is muted. An electric lamp flutters to life, its orange glow enough to light the cramped interior of the fishing shack. The howl of wind now a soft wailing, rain a hard patter on the tin roof, he starts to make out the string of sentences being spun brokenly just above.
“Stupid, stupid, Micah what were you thinking? Do you have any idea what could have happened to you? I knew you were putting yourself into danger but I didn’t think this-”
The voice weaves in and out alongside the ringing in his ears, fading until he can hardly process either. Micah puts his head in his hands, a line of blood dripping from the side of his mouth. He wipes it with a damp sleeve, leaning over to spit onto the dusty floor.
“It was Minerva,” he croaks, squinting burning eyes open. “It's got Minerva.”
Ansa doesn’t acknowledge him, continuing to rattle on. It is the loudest Micah has ever heard him, the usual lilting tone twisted into a timbre sharp and angry.
“Ansa, listen, Minnie,” he tries again. A flash of pain shoots through his jaw. “We have to help.”
“Stupid, idiot Sawyer-”
He attempts to pick himself up off the heap of old netting. Ansa stops talking mid sentence, and a single push to the center of his chest sends him back with a gasp of air.
Abruptly Ansa drops to his knees.
“Micah,” Ansa says demandingly. And then, softer, moments later: “Micah.” Through his blurred line of sight gets a first look at the other’s pale, drawn expression. He resembled a ghost.
“We have to help,” he repeats. “Minnie is-”
“Mineva is gone,” Ansa says. “She’s gone. You’re not going into the water to get her back.”
“But she-”
“I know, I saw it, I heard it! Micah can you just look at me?”
He raises his head, propped awkwardly up against a scattering of crates behind the nets. Rubbing his eyes, he takes in a clearer picture of Ansa hovering over him, leg bent at a strange angle, no cane to be seen.
“Did you drag me here like that?” he blurts out distractedly, gesturing outward in dismay. "Ansa, what the fuck?"
“Yes, I did. It's fine. Now shut up.”
Two hands lay themselves heavily on either side of Micah’s face, their palms warm and comforting. He focuses in on the touch, allowing it to pull him back into the reality of the moment. Breath coming in uneven shudders, he curls in on himself, unable to hold back the shiver which runs through him, spurred on by a bone deep chill he's suddenly hyper aware of.
Ansa gently lifts his face until the two are level with one another. He isn’t smiling, but the majority of his anger is gone, wiped clean by a sentiment Micah can’t place. Ansa studies the matted strings of hair on Micah’s forehead and the gash still bleeding sluggishly on his chin.
“Minerva was always going to go,” he states quietly. The strength of his conviction kills the last bit of argument Micah has left. “Given the opportunity, she was.”
“But I don’t understand,” Micah whispers. “She went willingly. I watched her fall back into it.”
He reaches up to grip the sodden sleeve hanging loosely on one of Ansa’s arms.
“What was that?” he asks weakly. “Ansa, what the fuck was that?”
Ansa doesn’t answer. He sighs, a short huff of air, his body seeming to slump forward. Wet hair lies damp against his own neck as well, his clothes just as drenched. He cradles the sides of Micah’s face, thumb brushing gently back and forth behind one ear, for a few seconds longer before slowly coaxing Micah up off the netting. He follows numbly, surprised out of his daze once Ansa pulls him into a hug.
He stiffens instinctively, the touch unfamiliar. Who had been the last to hug him, other than Minerva? He couldn’t recall. Ansa rests his head on Micah’s shoulder, one arm around his back, the other at his waist. He waits patiently until Micah leans into the embrace, his own arms hanging weakly at his sides. The two rest against each other tiredly, the pressure point of the floor against their knees lost among the heavier, reassuring weight of each other.
“I’m so sorry,” Ansa says in his ear. “I know what it’s like. I’ve seen others go in much the same way, too many times to count. Do you understand now why I didn’t want you investigating without me?”
Micah merely nods. Ansa pulls back slightly.
“Micah, if you,” he starts to say, and then swallows thickly. “If you want answers, I can help. But you need to know I can’t protect you from most of what you might find, whatever that might be.”
He nods once again into Ansa’s neck. Warmth seeps hesitantly back into him, chasing away the last of his trembling. The solitary eye writhing in the water flashes in the dim on the backs of his eyelids.
“I need answers,” Micah whispers. "I need to know. I can't keep going on in the dark."
He’s unsure if Ansa has heard him until he feels a hand brushing a snarl of stray curls back off his brow.
“Yeah,” Ansa says, sounding defeated. “You and me both.”

Walkerverse Character Tier List
Hello Walker Family! I'm here announcing the beginning of the Walkerverse Character Tier List series!
I've created a list of characters from Walker and Walker: Independence to put in a tier list ranking. I will be releasing a series of polls with all these characters (including pictures and brief reminders of their roles) to determine which Tier List ranking they get. Whichever option from S to F gets the most votes will become the official ranking of that character.
Here is the criteria I used to select the characters I'm putting in the poll series:
They must have a name on the imdb page
They must have a minimum of two appearances
I have to remember them, regardless of their appearance count
Single appearances that were special/memorable will also be included (ex: Uncle Willy, Minnie Jayne)
The rankings will be as follows:
S tier: Best character in the show, love them with all my heart, they can do literally nothing wrong
A tier: Beloved blorbo, one of my favorites, I'd want to be friends with them if they were real
B tier: I like them, but I have my critiques. A good character that I mostly enjoy
C tier: Mid character, not the biggest fan of them but I won't complain when they show up
D tier: I don't like them. I have many criticisms of their actions and personality. I may even dislike whole episodes because of them
F tier: Literally the worst character in the entire show. Hate them. Much dislike. I fastforward over them on rewatches.
I currently have pictures (for the poll and the complete tierlist that I will link when it is public) for 39 of the 120+ characters I put on the list, so that's where I will be starting. I will include the full list of all the characters from both shows below the cut along with the taglist.
The first poll will go up on Monday, September 23rd! Can't wait to see what you guys think!

ᴇᴘɪsᴏᴅᴇ 2 - ᴡʜᴏ ᴛᴏ ᴛʀᴜsᴛ?
Episode sypnosis: the friend group is devastated by Miyeon's death as they find out that the killer could be a member of their own.
word count: 1.6k
Series: Front page - Ep 1. - Ep 2. - Ep 3. - Ep 4. - Ep 5.
The sun is just peeking over the horizon when Yuqi and Soyeon start to slowly wake up.
Soyeon had an idea, when they first started college, that they wake up 2 hours before their classes start so that they could have more free time. Yuqi agreed.
The morning October air is cool and crisp, per usual.
They both stretch, the covers twisting around them as they move.
Yuqi groans and burrows back under the blanket as Soyeon yawns and stumbles over to the window. She throws the window open wide, letting in the chilly but cool air.
The sound of the autumn leaves rustling outside can be heard followed by the birds’ calls.
‘’Are you crazy?! We’re gonna freeze to death!’’ Yuqi shouts at Soyeon, wrapping herself up in the blanket even more.
‘’Relax, Yuqi. You’re the one that wanted us to be roommates, get used to it.’’ Soyeon flips her off before searching the fridge for breakfast.
Yuqi sighs in frustration, but she was aware of Soyeon’s morning grumpiness.
She pushes the blanket away from her face and searches for the remote control.
‘’Did you see Miyeon’s message? She’s so sweet sometimes.’’ Soyeon says, holding up her phone showing it to Yuqi.
‘’Yeah. I feel like she really… I don’t know… like needs us?’’
‘’Ah! Found it!’’ Yuqi adds, holding the remote control.
Her eyes widen as the TV turns on to breaking news.
‘’A young woman Cho Miyeon was found butchered in her own home after just days of moving into her own house. Miyeon graduated college a week ago and was ‘very ambitious’ for her future, sources say. The investigation is still on-going and our condolences go to her family and friends.’’
The two girls were speechless at the sudden news. What do you mean their friend of more than 4 years is…gone? Both of their mouths were open in shock and terror. The TV remote in Yuqi’s hand slipped and fell and Soyeon stood, petrified while holding the plate.
“w-what’s this?” Yuqi muttered out, her hand trembling as she slowly looked at Soyeon who was as confused as she was.
“No…this can’t be true, she sent us a message just before I fell asleep!?” She raised her voice, Soyeon was devastated so she barely walked up to Yuqi and sat next to her. No words exiting her mouth. “Just 5 days after Soojin’s death…” They exchange worried looks.
They stayed sitting in silence, covered in a blanket as they listened to the TV reporter, Gale Weathers, talk about the details of their murdered best friend.
1PM
Soyeon and Yuqi called all of their close friends to talk about the incident and to reassure each other. The friend group included Soyeon, Yuqi, Minnie, Shuhua and Y/n and all of them sat at the college campus benches around the fountain.
It felt cold for each one of them. It wasn’t just the chilly October weather, it was also the loss of warmth of their loved best friend, Miyeon.
The air was thick with tension as Yuqi, Soyeon, Minnie, Y/N, and Shuhua gathered by the fountain. The water trickled softly, contrasting with the nausea in their hearts.
‘’I still can’t believe this…First Soojin…and now Miyeon…’’ Shuhua stuttered out.
Soojin was Shuhua’s roommate before she got murdered by a Ghostface killer, just like Miyeon did. Soojin meant the world to Shuhua as they were together for a couple of years now and they were inseparable. The death of their two best friends made the rest of the group make a move in the action.
‘’The police aren't doing anything, Soojin died just 5 days ago!… We have to do something guys!’’ Soyeon said, standing up. Yuqi did the same.
‘’I don’t think we should get involved in all this” Minnie said hesitantly, glancing at Yuqi and Soyeon. “I mean let the police do their job.’’
A grudge was already forming in the air. “We can at least try?” Yuqi muttered.
“I mean…we could try but I don’t think there’s too much to do. She’s already gone and
there’s nothing to do except…” Y/n put on an act as she held her sad tone.
“Except?” Yuqi asks, tilting her head.
“Finding out who the killer is.” Y/n looks everyone in the eye, serious and passionate about finding out the truth.
“Miyeon and Soojin wouldn’t be killed just without a reason, they were loved by everyone, even the devil himself.” Yuqi stated.
“But how are we gonna find out who the killer is?” Shuhua asked.
“I’m guessing everyone has to know at least something?” Minnie asked with a strange tone that made everyone turn their heads towards her.
“What the actual fuck do you mean by that??” Soyeon slightly raises her voice at her.
“Do you think…one of us is… the killer?” She furrowed her eyebrows at the thought. Why would anyone do that to their own friend in the first place?
Yuqi shifts uncomfortably. “Jesus… Minnie, what the hell?”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” Minnie snaps, visibly frustrated with her eyebrows furrowed.
The group falls silent, exchanging uneasy looks.
“The only thing I know is that Miyeon texted our group chat right before she died, I’m guessing, and the rest of the story I heard is from TV.” Yuqi shared as she swayed her arms while explaining.
“How would you know she died RIGHT before she sent the text?” Soyeon raised suspicion at her roomate.
“What the fuck?? We were together all night yesterday?” Yuqi curses.
“Not quite, it took you a long time to get snacks from the nearby store.” Soyeon pressed with her eyes and pierced with the questions at Yuqi, their tension becoming
“LOOK, there’s no use blaming each other, we need to be each other's support, especially now” Y/N says finally, her voice steady but defensive to stop whatever Soyeon and Yuqi were starting.
Yuqi crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing at Y/N. “Support each other? Is that what you call this? Because it feels more like you’re trying to act like there's a reason for anyone to be a suspect while dodging any blame yourself.”
“Are you serious?” Y/N snaps back, her tone matching Yuqi’s. “I’m the one who said we should find out who did this! Why would I do that if I didn’t care?”
The tension thickens, a cold breeze rustling through the trees around them, as if amplifying the strain.
‘’Hey, hey, hey!’’ Soyeon stepped in, easing the tensions.
‘’We all deal with grief differently, Yuqi.’’ she added, putting a hand on Yuqi’s shoulder suggesting she should sit down.
Yuqi rolled her eyes before sitting back down, staying quiet but annoyed.
Soyeon shot warning looks towards Minnie and Y/n who sat down immediately, not wanting any more drama.
“So we shouldn’t even trust each other?” Minnie breaks the silence. “Who would even do that to their best friend?” She continued.
Soyeon exhaled at the question but kept her cool. “It’s the least we can do to avoid any more…losses within us.”
The words hung heavy in the air, and Y/N glanced pointedly at Shuhua, crossing her arms. “Well, maybe we should be asking the silent one,” Y/N said, her tone sharp.
“Because this didn’t come out of nowhere. Soojin was first, and who was the closest to her that night?” Her eyes locked on Shuhua as everyone turned to her too.
Shuhua blinked, stunned in confusion. “What… are you trying to say?” blinking again.
“I gotta agree, yeah, Almost like you’re hiding something.” Yuqi raises her head and looks at Shuhua.
Shuhua shook her head, visibly upset. “I don’t owe anyone a detailed breakdown of my grief. Everyone handles it differently and you KNOW how much her death impacted me.”
“Do they?” Y/N’s voice was cold. “Or do some people keep quiet because they have something to hide? I mean, you were the last one to see Soojin, weren’t you?”
Minnie gasped, looking at Shuhua in shock. “Shu, is that true?” Yuqi and Soyeon couldn’t believe it either, Shuhua? Killing her lover? Could it be true?
Shuhua’s face flushed, and she stammered. “Yes, but that doesn’t mean anything! She went out afterward, and I had no idea anything had happened. I’ve told you all this before.”
Y/N raised her eyebrow. “Well, if you have something to tell us…don’t hesitate to admit the truth.”
Shuhua felt devastated at them not believing her, tears started forming in her eyes. She swallowed hard as she spoke. “God! Why would I kill someone I’ve always loved?!”
Soyeon stepped in, her voice steady but firm. “Y/N, that’s enough. We gotta do just like you said, we gotta be each other's support but we should keep an eye on each other.”
Though Soyeon didn’t know who to suspect and who to believe, she still didn’t want them to fight.
Everyone nodded in acceptance. “Yeah, we shouldn’t accuse anyone just yet, without proof too.” Yuqi started along with Soyeon.
Suddenly, Shuhua stood up and without a word fastly walked away from her friends. The fact that everyone started blaming her made her feel nauseous.
As Shuhua hurried away, Minnie watched her go, a flicker of satisfaction dancing in her eyes. “All of this is too much for Shu, like I said let’s not accuse anyone just like that.” she said softly, her voice dripping with feigned concern.
Minnie glanced at Y/N, an unspoken understanding passing between them. “Yeah, it’s hard to trust anyone now,” she added, “But you can’t say that Y/n’s theory can’t be a little true, if she was last seen with Soojin I mean… doesn’t that sound weird?”
Yuqi sighed, knowing it really does sound weird, though she stayed quiet. “I’m gonna apologize later, I should’ve been careful with words.” Y/n lowered her head down, deep down she knew she had to apologize even if she didn’t want to. “You sure are mean today, meanie.” Yuqi bumped her shoulder and so 4 girls exchanged cheerful laughs.

So I know you like Marvel, DC, and Percy Jackson, but what other shows, movies, or genres to you like??? Action, horror, comedy, crime/medical dramas? If you don’t mind me asking that is .
hmmmm
so DC and PJO are definitely the big ones, and have been for years but other than that
Miss Peregrine's Home/ Peculiar Children series
greys anatomy with my sister (but i refuse to watch past season 14, there was NO reason to keep going
the owl house? a little? i still read the moringmark comics and am on the subreddit, but i'm not really active in the fandom. same goes for gravity falls. OH I NEED TO POST A GRAVITY FALLS THING ITS COOL AS SHIT!!!
throne of glass (sarah j. maas series) i love this series but oh my fucking god the fandom sucked when i was last in it. absolutely no understanding of any sort of morally gray character. i adore characters who are human and make mistakes, and from what i saw.... no one else did.
sort of merlin tv but also.... just the fanfics. i watched the first season of the actual show and then it got removed from netflix so i just read the fandom wiki and fanfiction. got into it originally because caffeinatedflumadiddle (SOSF writer) also wrote for merlin.
umbrella academy!! TV more than comics but i definitely like both. TV wise, i've not actually watched season 3 yet, but imma get there at some point.
love the true lives of the fabulous killjoys comics, don't really read the fics bc ppl conflate the fabulous four with the band and that's ick.
heartstopper! my ex gf got me into the series, but i definitely still love them now!! personally i like the show, then the novels (like solitaire!!! god i love solitaire), then the graphic novels. i love nick and Charlie (obviously) but tao is my favorite non-main character. non main being not-nick-or-charlie.
dear evan hansen. not like. a lot a lot, but i like the fics, the book was cool. not watched the musical, but listened to the songs.
hunger games!! controversial opinion but i don't really thing gale did much wrong? like he designed bombs WHILE THEY WERE IN WAR. what happened to prim was a tragedy, but one that was accidental. definitely still team everlark though.
derry girls! watch it (and rewatch it) with my family a lot. my favorite is michelle.
love both the song of achilles and circe by madeline miller, even if they're not historically accurate (moreso the circe there...) honestly, love a lot of mythological retellings-- daughters of sparta is another really good one.
speechless (tv) is great! watched it mainly for the nonverbal rep, ray is definitely my favorite character. fun fact, my mum was in a mums group with minnie driver.
everything's gonna be okay! also watched for rep (this time just autism in general) and also love it. drea is my favorite character.
coraline!!! holy shit i love coraline. book and movie. favorite animated movie by far.
my sister's keeper is a great book. not watched the movie, but i love the book.
girl in pieces is a great book.
i watched fate the winx saga, that was good
school spirits!! can't wait for season 2
okay also, nonfiction/poetry wise
i adore richard siken. he's a wonderful poet. i like crush more than war of the foxes, and i can't wait for the next collection to come out!! seriously ask me about his poetry, i could go on for ages-- i've got favorite quotes, favorite poems, everything.
black girl, call home (and other poems by the author) jasmine mans is great. i am white, so disclaimer there, i probably shouldn't speak as to the racial poetry, but i definitely enjoy her queer and sexual assualt poetry.
a couple of others i can't pull up rn
night by elie wiesel. genuinely guys, usually i don't like nonfiction, but i read this book for english nine YEARS ago, and it was such a beautiful book that i bought it when the unit was over. it's absolutely horrific, but.
radium girls by kate moore. was my special interest for years and years and years, and still definitely a comfort book.
genres?
honestly for books i just wander through barnes and noble and see what strikes my fancy
it really depends on my mood, like, i have tv shows/movies for background noise while i do homework/chores, tv shows/movies for when i'm trying to fall asleep, ones to watch with other people, ones to watch by myself...
i like watching a lot of documentaries. on Netflix, i recommend keep sweet pray and obey, brain on fire, athlete a, the volcano: rescue from whaakari, and take care of maya. also, i can't remember the name, but the boston marathon massacre one.
also, hannah gadsby? great comedian 10/10 recommend. i've loved the shows since the first came out in 2018. not watched the most recent ones yet. also rec the book.
i guess mainly action and fantasy. and then documentaries, and sometimes medical dramas.
medical drama wise i've watched greys anatomy, house, new amsterdam, parts of the good doctor, and the first couple of episodes of scrubs.
OH FOR MY BOOK PEOPLE IF YOU'RE EVER IN CHICAGO, GO TO EXILE IN BOOKVILLE ITS WONDERFUL!!
everytime i go to chicago i go to exile in bookville. if yall want the website link,
sorry this got so over the top lol

“I wish you a Merry Christmass at Home” 2nd mate of the whaleship Arnolda Benjamin Boodry wrote in the margins for his entry on this day in 1852. He consoled himself with his lot with a refrain he wrote often over the years: “But it is not for life if it is for 4 years”. On Christmas eve, he shared where his subconscious was spending its time:
“A pleasant dream about home and loved ones I wish I was there to night I think I should call on some of my friends if it was not to late But there is many a calm, squall, and gale to pass over my devoted head before that day comes.”
Holidays tended to bring out the sentimentality in many whalers who were so long and far from what they felt was home. Here are a handful:
Allen Newman, Edward, 1848
“I wish all my friends A merey Christmus which is more than I anticipate for myself.”
Mary Lawrence, Addison, 1858
“Christmas Day reminds us of home and friends. Minnie wished to hang up her stocking as usual, and as I had a tin of candies which her grandpa put up for her, “Santa Claus” managed to fill it very well. We sat down to a Christmas dinner of two roast turkeys, sweet and Irish potatoes, boiled onions, stewed pumpkin and cranberries, pickles, and a nice indian pudding made of milk and eggs. Had a goat killed for the benefit of those living in the forecastle, to which, I should think, they did ample justice as there are but two legs remaining.”
Joseph Dias, Ocmulgee, 1847
“Comes with strong breezes from the westward and overcast weather, steering S.E. with all sail set. This day I am 25 years old 25 what and not married yet are like to be shocking. But this is not all I am disapointed in. For I have been keeping Marys cake to celebrate my birth day with and this morning I took it out for the pourpus of eating but when I come to cut it I found it was spoiled a sad disappointment. But what grieves me most is to think I let it spoil after Mary took so much panes with it Oh dear Mary I hope you will not spoil so soon for the want of some one to take care of you.”
John Winslow, Wave, 1852
“Comes with a strong gale of wind from the E.ward this day My Wife is 26 years old if she is living and has got a poor sailor for a husband but it is not the worst for her for that May she live to enjoy many more years of Life and may they prove to be far happier than those that are past”
[Dec 26th]
“O if I could make 250 dollars this voyage I would not go to sea any more for it is a dogs life and sometimes when I think of the comforts of my home with my Wife and children I almost resolve never to go to sea again let me get a home of my own and I will stay by it.”
J.T. Langdon, St Peter, 1849
“The first part calm not a breath of air ruffled the face of the stormy deep. But with an ever rolling motion rocks our old ship like a vast cradle and the surface of the deep is like a vast mirror reflecting objects on its surface The first part ends Christmas and how many melancholy reflections come around unbidden and unasked for One year ago I was at home enjoying every pleasure that heart could wish friends to cheer and schoolmates to greet with a merry Christmas but now I am far away on the stormy ocean Many thousand miles intervene between this and my once happy Home”
John Martin, Lucy Ann, 1841
“As fine a day as we have had since we left the Capes of Delaware. The Watch on deck was employed in breaking out from the hold, bread, water, vinegar & other stores. We had Turtle Sea Pie for dinner. Take it altogether we spent a merry Christmas & more to my satisfaction than many a one I spent on shore.”
Benjamin Bourne, Annawann II, 1859
“[in the margins, alongside a stamp of a whale’s flukes] This Whale aught to have been saved - stove the boat Wish All a Mary Christmas Begins with a strong wind Bark steering S at 3 pm wind shifted to the Estrd a heavey rain squall took in sail to a close reef Main Topsail & staysails luffed to the wind heading SSE. Lat part at 9am saw a large sperm whale going slow into the SW so ends this day. [With an addendum on Jan 29th, 1899] I thought I was having a hard time 40 years ago but it was the best of my life.
Silliman Ives, Sunbeam, 1868
“The wheels of time have made another revolution and Christmas “Merry Christmas” is with us once again, although I can’t complain of being particularly merry, on the contrary I am rather inclined to feel somewhat sad. O Fate! Inexorable fate! that compels me to spend this holiday miles away from home and kindred, far out upon the surging billows of the Atlantic. Little did I think while enjoying the pleasures and amenities of this festival season one year ago among relatives and friends, that to day would find me here. But it is not given us to know the future, and it is a wise providence that withholds from us such knowledge, for had I known this was to be my destiny, any joy would have been sadly marred during that happy period. I wonder if the dear ones at home as they greet each other this morning, and exchange those endearing mementos common to this day, have a thought for their wild and reckless though still loving son, and brother, and cousin, who to day is separated from their hearths and homes by leagues and leagues of blue water. As the incense arises from off the family altar on this Christmas morning, is there a prayer breathed for the wanderer? I believe there is. Love conquers distance and in their hearts and their prayers he has his accustomed place.”
#long post //#awhalin#GOT KINDA SAD COMPILING THESE….love all u….#I’m fine and used to spending holidays alone but there is somethin about….goin through the journals of these lads also spendin them alone#LOVE ALL U LADS SO MUCH….

LUCY AT THE JUNCTION
"Petticoat Junction" and The Lucycoms
Although thematically the shows created by Lucille Ball were worlds apart from the quaint antics in Hooterville's Shady Rest Hotel, there were artistic and creative commonalities that are worth discussing.
"Petticoat Junction" ran from 1963 to 1970, while "The Lucy Show" ran from 1962 to 1968, both on CBS TV. "Petticoat Junction" was filmed at General Service Studios, where "I Love Lucy" began filming until it moved to larger quarters.
Like Kate Bradley, Lucy Carmichael and Lucy Carter are widows raising teenage girls while trying also to earn a living, a popular trope of the 1960s and '70s.
To vary storylines, "I Love Lucy" added a dog and a baby, as did "Petticoat Junction." Animal trainer Frank Inn worked on both shows, as well as on "Here's Lucy."
Both shows went from black and white to color in October 1965. Although "The Lucy Show" had filmed its second season in color, CBS declined to air it in color.
SHARING THE TYPEWRITER
Writer Seaman Jacobs penned six episodes of "Petticoat Junction" in 1963-64 and three of "The Lucy Show" in 1967. Fred S. Fox co-wrote one of those episodes with Jacobs. Fox also wrote one 1965 episode of "Petticoat Junction." Fox's co-writer for that episode was Irving 'Iz' Elinson, who wrote a dozen episodes of "The Lucy Show."
SHARED CASTING
Their "Petticoat Junction" characters are in parentheses, followed by their Lucycom / Desilu credits.
Bea Benadaret (Kate Bradley) first starred with Lucille Ball on her radio series "My Favorite Husband" (1948-1951), primarily as best friend Iris Atterbury. Benadaret was Ball's first choice to play Ethel Mertz on "I Love Lucy," but she was already contracted to play Blanche Morton on "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show", another best friend character. Ball still managed to cast her as a one-off character, Miss Lewis, an elderly spinster, on season 1 of "I Love Lucy."
Edgar Buchanan (Uncle Joe Carson) appeared with Lucille Ball on a 1971 "Merv Griffin Show" saluting director George Marshall, for whom both worked. For Desilu, Buchanan appeared on a 1958 episode of "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" and a 1959 episode of their helicopter series "Whirlybirds".
Frank Cady (Sam Drucker) appeared for Desilu in "December Bride" (1956), "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1959), "Guestward Ho!" (1961), "The Untouchables" (1962), "The Danny Thomas Show" (1960), "Glynis" (1963), and a 1963 unsold pilot titled "Swingin' Together."
Charles Lane (Homer Bedloe) appeared in 7 films with Lucille Ball between 1933 and 1949. He was also heard on her radio show "My Favorite Husband". On "I Love Lucy," he played 4 characters and 2 more on "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour." He was cast as banker Barnsdahl on "The Lucy Show," but was released after 4 episodes so that Ball could hire Gale Gordon. He went from Desilu to Hooterville.
Byron Foulger (Banker Guerney / Wendell Gibbs) first appeared with Lucille Ball in the Westinghouse industrial film Ellis in Freedomland (1952). On "I Love Lucy" he played the spokesman of The Friends of the Friendless in “Lucy’s Last Birthday” (ILL S2;E25) in 1953. in 1965′s “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) he played henpecked husband Fred Dunbar. Two years later, Foulger was back on “The Lucy Show” to play Mr. Trindle, owner of a jewelry store supposedly robbed by Lucy in “Lucy Meets the Law” (TLS S5;E19), his last appearance opposite Lucille Ball. For Desilu, he was seen in "December Bride" (1957 & 1958) and "The Untouchables" (1959).
Elvia Allman (Selma Plout / Gladys Stroud / Cora Watson) was heard with Lucille Ball on "My Favorite Husband" before playing the strident Candy Factory Forewoman on "I Love Lucy." Allman returned to the show as one of Minnie Finch’s neighbors in “Fan Magazine Interview” (ILL S3;E17) in 1954 and prim magazine reporter Nancy Graham in “The Homecoming” (ILL S5;E6) in 1955. She made two appearances on “The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour“ - first as Ida Thompson, Westfield’s PTA director, then as Milton Berle's private secretary. Allman would also be seen on two episodes of “The Lucy Show" as a customer in a department store and the manager of an employment agency. Allman’s final screen appearance with Lucille Ball reunited her with Bob Hope: “Bringing Back Vaudeville” in 1971. For Desilu, Allman was seen on "December Bride" (1954-59), and "The Ann Sothern Show" (1958).
Kay E. Kuter (Newt Kiley) made an appearance in the 1970 TV movie Swing Out, Sweet Land with Jack Benny and Lucille Ball. He was seen on "Here's Lucy" as a singing Canadian Mountie in 1971. For Desilu he was seen on "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" (1957 & 1958).
Jack Bannon (Roger Budd / 9 Others) was the real-life son of Bea Benadaret. He was briefly seen on "Here's Lucy" in 1971.
Eddie Albert (Oliver Wendell Douglas) first co-starred with Lucille Ball in The Fuller Brush Girl (1950). Albert played himself on a 1973 episode of “Here’s Lucy” titled “Lucy Gives Eddie Albert the Old Song and Dance” (HL S6;E6). He also appeared with Ball on an episode of "The Carol Burnett Show" (1968). For Desilu, he appeared on "The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1958) and "The Greatest Show on Earth" (1963).
Eva Gabor (Lisa Douglas) played romance novelist Eva Von Graunitz in “Lucy and Eva Gabor” (S1;E7) in 1968 as well as herself in a 1972 epsidoes set in a hospital room.
Hank Patterson (Fred Ziffel) appeared in an episode of the Desilu western "The Sheriff of Cochise" in 1957, "The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse" (1958), "Guestward Ho!" (1961), and "The Untouchables" (1960-1962).
Barbara Pepper (Doris - aka Ruthie - Ziffel) was a Goldwyn Girl with Lucille Ball making 6 films together and becoming good friends. On the list of possible actors to play Ethel Mertz, she was in 10 episodes of "I Love Lucy" as various characters.
Roy Roberts (Norman Curtis / Game Warden Hughes) was first seen with Lucille Ball was in an uncredited role in Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949). Roberts joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” at the start of season five, but not as the role he would become known for, bank president Mr. Cheever in 14 episodes, but as the Admiral in “Lucy and the Submarine” (TLS S5;E2) in September in 1966. Roberts returned to Lucille Ball Productions for 5 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” For Desilu he appeared in a 1955 episode of "December Bride."
Paul Wilbur (Bert Smedley) played Mr. Wilbur, owner of the ice cream parlor, in "Lucy is a Soda Jerk" (1962). For Desilu, he was seen on a 1963 episode of "The Greatest Show on Earth."
Parley Baer (Judge Madison / Judge Turner / 3 Others) did four episodes of the radio version of "Green Acres" “Grandby’s Green Acres” starring Bea Benadaret, a summer fill-in for Lucille Ball’s “My Favorite Husband.” Baer appeared in 2 episodes of "I Love Lucy," and 5 of "The Lucy Show." On “Here’s Lucy” he played Dr. Cunningham, Harry Carter’s psychiatrist. For Desilu he was seen in "Whirlybirds," "December Bride," and "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse."
Olan Soule (Stanley Benson / 3 Others) played Little Ricky's doctor Dr. Gettelman on "I Love Lucy". For Desilu, he appeared on several episodes of "The Untouchables," "The Ann Sothern Show," and "December Bride."
Sarah Selby (Mrs. Frisby / Mrs. Grundy / 3 Others) was heard as Liz's mother on Lucy's radio show "My Favorite Husband." She played bachelorette Dorothy Cook on "I Love Lucy."
Barry Kelley (Sheriff Crandall / Hurley Feasel) played the Mayor of Bancroft on "The Lucy Show". For Desilu he appeared on "The Untouchables," "Whirlybirds," and "Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse."
Jonathan Hole (Hank Thackery / Mr. Bunce / Mr. Earnshaw) was in 3 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and 2 of "Here's Lucy." For Desilu he was seen in "The Adventures of Jim Bowie."
William O'Connell (Martin Evans / Mr. Agnew) was seen as a Beverly Hills hotel manager on "The Lucy Show" in 1967.
Herbie Faye (Jack Stewart / Doodles / 2 Others) was in a 1968 episode of “The Lucy Show.” and 4 episodes of “Here’s Lucy”. Ball did a 1959 cameo on "Sergeant Bilko" on which he played Fender for 139 episodes. He also did an episode of "Mothers-in-Law" for Desi Arnaz.
Shirley Mitchell (Mae Belle Jennings) became friends with Lucille Ball in the late 1940s when she was featured in 4 episodes of “My Favorite Husband.” Mitchell reunited with Lucille Ball on “I Love Lucy” playing Marion Strong, member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League.
Jean Vander Pyl (Agnes Frisby / Gladys Miller / Alice Tuttle) was heard with Bea Benadaret on Lucille Ball's radio show "My Favorite Husband." Benadaret and Vander Pyl voiced Wilma and Betty on "The Flintstones."
Peter Leeds (Syd Sparks / Gus Clegg) was heard on “My Favorite Husband." On "I Love Lucy" he was the reporter questioning the Maharincess of Franistan in “The Publicity Agent” (ILL S1;E31). He starred with Lucy in the films The Long, Long Trailer (1953) and The Facts of Life (1960). Leeds also appeared in “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) as well as an episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1971.
Hugh Beaumont (Donald Elliott / Ronnie Beackman) is best known as Ward Cleaver in "Leave it to Beaver," but also appeared uncredited in Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) starring Lucille Ball. For Desilu, he was seen in "Whirlybirds".
Hal Smith (Ben Miller / 2 Others) is probably best remembered as Otis Campbell, the town drunk, on “The Andy Griffith Show” (filmed at Desilu). He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic’s Choice. He was seen on 3 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and 1 episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1972.
Maxine Semon (Mabel Snark / Lena Fenwick) played a nurse on “I Love Lucy” in “Nursery School” (ILL S5;E9) then a Yankee Stadium spectator in "Lucy and Bob Hope" (1955). She was a Las Vegas chambermaid on "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour".
Benny Rubin (Chief Fleeteagle / 2 Others) played the Beverly Hills tour bus driver on "I Love Lucy." He was seen on 2 episodes of "The Lucy Show." For Desi Arnaz he was seen on "The Carol Channing Show." For Desilu, he was in "December Bride."
Lurene Tuttle (Adelaide Keane / Henrietta Greene / Mary Alice Perkins) played the outgoing president of The Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “The Club Election” (ILL S2;E19) in 1953.
Burt Mustin (Grandpa Jenson) did 3 episodes of "The Lucy Show" and played a juror with Joan Rivers on "Here's Lucy." Mustin played Uncle Jeff in Mame (1974).
Gail Bonney (Mrs. Tomley / Mrs. Robinson / 1 Other) was seen in 2 1950 films featuring Lucille Ball. She played mother of twins Mrs. Hudson in “The Amateur Hour,” (ILL S1;E14). She also did 1 episode of "The Lucy Show" and 1 episode of "Here's Lucy."
Eve McVeagh (Miss Hammond) played Bert, Lucy Ricardo’s hairdresser, in “The Black Wig” (ILL S3;E26). She also made an appearance as a store clerk on "Here's Lucy."
OTHERS FROM LUCYLAND WHO VISITED THE JUNCTION:
Rolfe Sedan, Frank Aletter, Milton Frome, Herb Vigran, Amzie Strickland, Ray Kellogg, Bob Jellison, Frank Wilcox, Eddie Quillan, Robert Carson, J. Pat O'Malley, Florence Lake, Ernest Truex, Dorothy Konrad, George O'Hanlon, Jack Collins, Ross Elliott, Iris Adrian, William Lanteau, Joi Lansing, Bernie Kopell, Lyle Talbot, Stanley Addams, Doris Packer, Don Brodie, Frank Nelson, Rich Little, Joan Blondell, Nancy Kulp, Sid Melton, Keith Andes, Hayden Rorke, Dick Patterson, Irwin Charrone, Rudy Vallee, Lloyd Corrigan, Jackie Joseph, and Barbara Morrison.
HOOTERVILLE & THE LUCVERSE
There were several Lucycoms that took place aboard trains, but the most notable is "The Great Train Robbery" (1955). Lucy and Desi took a publicity photo in front of the infamous emergency break wearing crumpled conductors caps. On this trip, Frank Nelson played the conductor pushed to his limit by Lucy Ricardo, a role he reprised when Lucy Carmichael took the train to Washington DC in 1963.
Coincidentally, Nelson appeared on "Petticoat Junction" in 1967, but not as a conductor, as the manager of the Flamingo Room in Springdale. He has the distinction of being the only actor to play two recurring characters (Freddy Fillmore and Ralph Ramsey) on "I Love Lucy."
In "Joe Saves the Post Office" (1969), Joe, Janet and Bobbie Jo travel to Washington DC to talk to their Congressman. They end up meeting the President. At the time, the office was occupied by Richard M. Nixon, who is represented only by an extended hand for Joe to shake and he does not speak nor is he mentioned by name. In 1963's "Lucy Visits the White House", Lucy, Viv, and their scout troupe travel to Washington DC to present the President with a sugar cube White House. In this case, the episode mentions the President's name: John F. Kennedy. He has a few off screen lines at the end of the episode, voiced by Elliott Reid. In retrospect, both these episodes conjur unhappy memories. Kennedy was asassinated and Nixon resigned in scandal.
Hooteville's train depot can best be compared to the whistle stop of Greenview in "Lucy Visits the White House" (1963). Greenview was a remote stop located somewhere between Danfield and DC.
Bancroft, California, the small town featured in "Main Street USA" and "Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map" (1967) was a town somewhat bigger than Hooterville, but smaller than Pixley. Lucy and Mr. Mooney arrived there by train to save their main street from becoming a superhighway.
Bancroft had a general store run by Doc Putnam. It featured a large red coffee grinder, just like Sam Drucker's general store in Hooterville.
The Mayor Bancroft was played by Barry Kelley, who appeared on "Petticoat Junction" as Sheriff Crandall. Bancroft citizens included Burt Mustin, who played Grandpa Jenson in three 1968 episodes of "Petticoat Junction" and Hal Smith, who played Mr. Richardson / Ben Miller / Jug Gunderson on "Junction."
During the series' last season, the character of Jerry Roberts was introduced as a possible boyfriend for Billie Jo - until she finds out he's already married. In real life, actors Greg Mullavey and Meredith McRae were man and wife. On "Here's Lucy," Lucie Arnaz's husband Phil Vandervoort was also part of the cast. Sadly, both marriages were short-lived.
A railroad handcar was prominently featured in "Lucy Hunts Uranium" (1958) featuring Fred MacMurray. In Hooterville, it was generally manned by Homer Bedloe (Charles Lane), who was also featured as a Claims Officer in "Lucy Hunts Uranium." Also in the hour-long "Lucy-Desi" episode Bob Jellison plays a Las Vegas bellboy. In Hooterville, Jellison played a salesman in 1968 and Ben Miller in 1970, the 4th and final actor to play that role. That episode also featured Lucyverse performers Sarah Selby and Parley Baer. It was directed by Elliott Lewis, producer of "The Lucy Show" and Desi Arnaz's "Mothers-in-Law" as well as husband of Lucy sidekick Mary Jane Lewis.
In 1969's "One of Our Chickens Are Missing" (S7; E4) of the final season, Hooterville is plagued by chicken thieves in the former of a biker gang. Harry Dean Stanton plays Ringo, who is 'saving up for a pillow'. Lucy and Viv also encounter biker gangs in a 1967 episode of "The Lucy Show" set on the notorious Sunset Strip.
In 1969's "The Camping Trip" (S7;E5), the entire family packs up and goes camping in the woods. They go fishing and Uncle Joe comes face to face with a bear, "The Camping Trip" was also the title of a 1953 episode of "I Love Lucy" where Lucy and Ricky also go fishing. In "The Lucy Show's" "Lucy Becomes a Father" (1964) Lucy Carmichael also comes face to face with a bear.
"Goodbye, Mr. Chimp" (S7;E12) introduces a chimpanzee to the Shady Rest. Uncle Joe buys the chimp as a gift for his infant niece. Two years earlier on "The Lucy Show," Lucy Carmichael also featured a chimp - actually three - in "Lucy The Babysitter". The popularity of chimpanzees on sitcoms can be attributed to The Marquis Chimps, the (non-human) stars of the sitcom “The Hathaways” (1961-62) in which a suburban couple kept three performing chimps as their children.
The iconic Shady Rest Hotel is reminiscent of The Eagle Hotel, where Lucy and Ricky stayed in "The Marriage License" (1952). Running the Eagle Hotel are Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby (played by Irving Bacon and Elizabeth Patterson), who are reminiscent of Uncle Joe and Kate Bradley, who run the Shady Rest. In season one, Uncle Joe schemes to market the Shady Rest as a 'honeymoon hotel.'
Richard Arlen and Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, the stars of the 1929 silent film Wings, the first film to win an Academy Award, were guest stars as themselves on both "Petticoat Junction" (1968) and "The Lucy Show" (1967). Both appearances revolved around their appearance in the film.
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was introduced in 1923 by the nephew of suffragette Susan B. Anthony. Thirty years later "I Love Lucy" tackled female equality, culminating in the boys insisting the girls pay their own dinner checks. In 1967 The National Organization for Women (NOW), pledged to fight tirelessly for the ratification of the ERA. On February 7, 1970, "Petticoat Junction" finally got around to the subject by inventing WITCH (Women In True Cultural Heritage) and having Billy Jo storm a barber shop in tailored suit. That same month, twenty NOW leaders disrupted hearings of the Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments, demanding the ERA be heard by the full Congress.
"Petticoat Junction" and "The Lucy Show" were both part of a DVD set titled The Best of Family TV.
