Gosh I hate grind culture. My little sister just started medical school and all of her orientation leaders are like “you absolutely cannot have a life WHATsoever you WILL have to give up EVERYTHING besides this program say GOODBYE to your hobbies and relationships” and now she’s calling me feeling guilty for running and going to the grocery store and that’s just WRONG! And that is exactly what I was told starting law school as well, and rejecting that mentality was the best thing I ever did but it was so hard not to buy into. Anyway if any of you are in an intense academic program PLEASE take time to sleep and eat and exercise and maintain your relationships and keep up your hobbies! you are not a robot who exists solely to study and I promise that living a life and staying physically and mentally healthy is not going to make you fail

Epic the Musical thought of the day. The "only my husband knew that so I guess that means it's you" line got me thinking.

So Penelope asks Ody to move the wedding bed to prove it is him, right? What if that means people have showed up claiming to be Ody before and Penelope had to find a way to test them? The suitors use magic and costumes and tricks and they to pretend to be Penelope's husband. Maybe Poseidon helped them at some point out of spite and Apollo is turning down offerings left and right bc the God of Prophecy is like hey no this isn't cool. She pretends to be happy when they show up to keep the ruse going then asks them to move the bed and as soon as they even start to go towards it, she tells then to gtfo. She slips a dagger from her sleeve and doesn't reveal it yet but she has heard how the men talk. The first time it happened, she genuinely for a split second thought it was her Ody, but some tell shattered that illusion, and since then she has been much more cautious. It would be even worse when they did it to Telemachus, but that is few and far between because he isn't of interest in this scenario. They just want Penelope and the Crown. So, Telemachus didn't think to test Ody when he actually showed up. But sometimes, Penelope worries her lip because if the suitors had tried the ruse on with Telemachus as well, he would have had no idea.

This is developing so fast it is difficult to keep track of. I am trying to learn more about it and not flagrantly dismiss perspectives. I get folks feel strongly about ai and thats okay.

Shoutout to ANYONE who is making the effort to learn more about this. It's hard and it's polarizing which makes it even harder.

one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand

with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary

i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.
