I spent something like six and a half hours in the hospital today so day 6 of my challenge is being further postponed but, in the lieu of not doing any drawing, I did end up rereading Ovid's Metamorphoses in between waiting and I just wanted to offer some of my favourite underrated bits.

Cadmus and Harmonia's twin transformations into snakes is so gentle? Cadmus goes first, transformed mid plea for his wife to caress him one last time before his face is completely covered in scales, then he rests gently between her boobs and wraps around her neck and shoulders like a big snake gorget. Harmonia follows him shortly and the two snakes intertwine with each other before gently slithering off into the bushes and I love that actually mwah mwah mwah (I also appreciate the sweet irony of Cadmus who slew a snake for his glory becoming a snake, toothless and gentle in the last of his days)

Everything about Perseus was hilarious. Like, I'm sorry - I've never done a lot of reading into Perseus but I did always remember the banquet massacre and the Andromeda rescuing and like, bro I know it's not meant to be funny but Perseus is funny. I think it's his politeness honestly? He goes up to Atlas and is like "hello kind sir, may I please stay a night in your lands? I've travelled an awful long way and I am weary and hungry. If you only accept noble guests, rest assured, I am of noblest birth and have completed the noblest of deeds. 🥺" and Atlas takes one look at him, has a That's So Raven vision about the one time Themis gave him a prophecy about a son of Jove stealing his apples and then told Perseus to kick rocks. So Perseus, like the well adjusted and noble individual that he is, turns Atlas into a mountain with Medusa's head. This is how a great many of Perseus' stories unfold. It is actually hysterical.

I am going to give a special shoutout to Athis and Lycabas who were two young lovers in attendance at Perseus and Andromeda's blood wedding. Athis died first - a skilled archer who never got to shoot and was burnt and bludgeoned across the face with a wedding brazier. When Lycabas saw that his dear friend's beauty was ruined, he picked up the fight against Perseus himself in Athis' name and was slashed to strips by Perseus' sword. Lycabas managed to drag himself over to Athis in his last moments and died beside him, so I thought that was a particularly touching bit of beauty in the otherwise extremely tragic blood wedding.

No one can ever make me feel bad for Niobe. In a lot of the Greek accounts I've read and heard, because they tend to be much shorter or references in a wider narrative, it's hard to really grasp how insanely disrespectful she was to Leto (not that her boasting she should be the goddess of motherhood to the actual goddess of motherhood isn't worthy of death and destruction enough) but Ovid really did go the extra mile to dig it home how far down her throat this lady put her foot because even at her sons' seven way funeral she did not stop boasting about how she was still glorious. I did find it interesting that the seemingly innocuous detail of Apollo killing off the boys first and then Artemis killing the girls was kept cross-culturally, I assume it's because boys were more auspicious than girls in both cultures.

The detail of Athena bonking Arachne constantly with a wooden box and her being transformed into a spider because she begged to not be bonked to death. Also very interestingly, in Ovid's account, it's not a clear victory for Athena against Arachne - she gets flustered at the depictions of her relatives' affairs and rips the tapestry up - the judges didn't actually get a chance to opine. This is in contrast to the contest the Muses sang about where their representative Calliope unilaterally won against the daughters of Pierus.

The account of Apollo and Marsyas was much shorter than I remember it being. I recall it being touted as one of the more vicious and visceral tales in Metamorphoses' collection but it included neither the details of Marsyas' contest against Apollo, nor Apollo's feelings (or even any dialogue from him!) throughout his peeling of Marsyas' skin. Instead it is wholly focused on Marsyas - on describing the physical gore of his exposed veins and contracting muscles and the grief of the rustic crowd as they mourned his loss - which is curious indeed since the entire theme of the poems of Book 6 is divine punishment and it is otherwise filled with rather full accounts of these contests and insults.

Byblis and Caunus made me want to reread Euripedes' Hippolytus for the twelve thousandth time. Caunus made the right call of course but I also very much hoped he would have a huge big speech about incest being bad instead of just smacking the messenger.

And lastly, for now, Jove's speech as Hercules lay burning atop his death pyre where he addresses the host of his gods and goes "Man, wasn't Hercules a great guy? Look, there goes all his mortal attributes burning away in the fire, now he is all my son and surely we are all in agreement that any divine son of mine deserves a place on Olympus :)" was very endearing. I always feel quite bad for Deianira because she truly didn't mean any harm by her gift and I've always wished for an account of Heracles/Hercules' death from her perspective. There could scarcely be a thing more awful, especially given how long and drawn out and incredibly painful Hercules' death was.

Lowkey, I want to take a day and compare Ovid and Euripedes' Medeas. They're both very different women and they both handle their situations very differently. Partially for my own vindication - I adore Medea and Jason equally and since popular fiction cannot speak about Medea without flattening her or making Jason completely monstrous, this is just one of those things I'll have to do myself sometime.

Another shop tourney Sunday, did better this week at 2-2 with Chronojet (we had 13 players this time unlike last week with 10), won against 2 of the stronger players at the shop so that was really nice. Lost one to Gandeeva and another to Bastion Prime (that restand ...) but the real win this week is pulling my third Thasus from my promo pack so I'm now up to 3 copies, so if I don't get my 4th by the end of next month I'd be okay shelling out the money for the last copy - pulling 2 copies this week basically means I've put in ~$60 total for 3 copies thus far, and if I have to shell out another $60 for the last one next month, then at least I averaged ~$36 for 4 copies which is Not The Worst for a staple promo in a meta deck.

As usual, full match breakdown behind the cut!

First round: Second vs Chronojet mirror:

This one actually went pretty well because I "lost" dice roll and got to go second. Did the usual (G1 Mikani or Swirler) + Gigi G1 rush combo, and kept the pressure on the whole fight. My opponent easily could've G2 gamed me (and I would've done the same back to him) but he decided to say to hell with that and just gave me first Stride on my Turn 3. Went into Faterider, pushed and built up hand with my G1 Mikani/Swirler/Gigi draw engine, went into Faterider again on Turn 4 to push to 5, then did Nextage Turn 5 for game. Overall a clean game and a great start to this tourney.

Second round: First vs Zorga (Masques):

I won dice roll (when I didn't want to) but alas, it is what it is. Mulliganed into Mikani-Gigi, rushed on my G2 turn (more like when would I not rush so I can go into Faterider multi-attack when my opponent is high on damage). Had the PG for the Blue Zorga Alchemagic for triple drive, and had just enough hand to guard the rest. Went into my first Faterider turn, bot deck a Roaming Prison Dragon, opponent PGs Faterider, but I mega-sack on the checks - crit-(red) OT-crit - and I put everything onto the Upstream I'd Time Leaped with Faterider, and my opponent dies to the first swing. This was actually the same guy who played Prison last week, and one of the better players at the shop (imho) and I keep losing to him so beating him this week (even if it was with drive check highroll) felt like an accomplishment. Also actually felt prepared when I went into this fight because Zorga was one of those decks I'd studied up on via Dear Days (just to get the basic idea of how the deck worked and what orders are generally played).

Third round: First vs Gandeeva:

Not much to say here beyond Gandeeva Did Gandeeva Things. I ended up Soul Charging both of my extra copies of Chronojet so I couldn't go into Nextage and had to rely on multiattack to push damage/win, and pretty much lost to Gandeeva's innate scaling in the end. Also drew OT into hand but I forgot to play it on my first Faterider turn, but I ended up needing that 50k shield because, y'know. Gandeeva.

Fourth round: First vs Bastion Prime:

This one started out not that great - didn't get Gigi in my opening hand - and I think I tunneled too hard on putting my OT back into deck when I didn't have Upstream on hand to tutor out Gigi for draw (I had 4 Soul by that point so I really should've Time Leaped one of my G1s for an Upstream). Ended up with not enough cards on hand for his first Prime turn, and lost to rear guard restand. It's something I'll have to keep in mind for my next tournament.

fairy tail dragon slayer headcanons pt. 1

♡ what the first gen and second gen dragon slayers eat is pretty self-explanatory. all of their elements are... somewhat tangible. sting and rogue though? they're still figuring it out. rogue wonders if he can eat someone else's shadow, and sting immediately volunteers himself. "for science!" he says. the result is that sting almost passes out. oops. he insists they try on their friends, much to rogue's displeasure. the results are that sting is the most susceptible, then yukino, rufus, orga, and minerva is the least susceptible to magic drainage. sting insists rogue tries to eat an inanimate object's shadow, and nothing happens to it, so they decide that's the way to go.

♡ when wendy eats air, the oxygen levels thin. she has to be careful or she'll cause her allies and enemies alike to pass out. when sting eats light, the area gets darker and darker. this is great for rogue, who starts eating the shadows, and they manage to balance each other out.

♡ sting insists that different types of light taste differently. his favorite is light from golden hour, right when the sun is dipping below the horizon. moonlight will do in a pinch, but it's so diluted that it takes way more of it to recover sting's magic. he also gets sick if he eats too much moonlight.

♡ pantherlily already has transformation magic and enhanced strength, and carla learns to transform so she can help wendy fight. the other three exceeds feel... a little left out. happy learns how to fly faster and for longer (though he still complains about lucy being heavy). lector goes to porlyusica and wendy to learn some stamina regeneration spells for sting. everyone is surprised when frosch, completely on their own, manages to learn an adorable light spell that creates floating pink bubbles. rogue can consume the shadows from them without worrying about draining frosch's magic, and he spends the entire afternoon crying about it.

♡ dragon slayers are a bit like crows. their way of bonding with someone is through gifting trinkets. natsu will bring lucy, erza, and even gray pretty rocks or seashells that he's found on jobs. wendy picks up a new craft or hobby every week, so the members of fairy tail are constantly recieving handmade accessories from her (gajeel helps during the metalsmithing phase). gajeel does not buy cute things for people. he is like a dad in the fact that, when juvia mentions she wants watermelon, he buys her 20 watermelons. walking math problem fr.

♡ laxus has mixed feelings about his more draconic features and habits. he's never loved his magic because of the way he got it, and the memory of his father basically torturing him as he inserted the lacrima will stay with him forever. he tends to suppress dragon instincts more than anyone else in the group, and they all scold him for it. on a rare occasion, laxus will give in and buy something shiny (like a hairclip) for wendy. she has a little jewelry box for them that she guards fiercely.

♡ cobra considers himself more of a flying snake than a dragon. he once drew a picture that sent everyone into a laughing fit. he prefers to stick with the old oración seis crew, but the guild dragon slayers are always happy to see him when he stops by with crime sorcière.

♡ sting, because of his heightened senses and his affinity for light, prefers nighttime. the day can often be overwhelming, and overexposure to bright settings and lots of people leaves his skin buzzing. he likes to sit in the dim guild hall, leaning against the cool stone wall, as the chatter of the crowd quiets down with the setting sun.

♡ dragon slayers all have the Bite instinct. some exercise a degree of control about it, and others go crazy with it. wendy will very gently nibble on erza or mira's arm when she's in the mood, and sometimes she does it absentmindedly. natsu, on the other hand, is an absolute menace. multiple of erza's armor sets have natsu-shaped bite marks on them. he tends to go after her the most because he knows he won't hurt her with the armor. when natsu's more calmed down, he will chomp on lucy's shoulder. gajaeel copes by eating all of fairy tail's silverware (mira starts buying ceramic spoons), but when levy offers her wrist to him he can't help it.

♡ rogue is another one who doesn't really bite people. he, very rarely, nips at frosch's ears, which causes the exceed to giggle. sting is a Biter like natsu, but with slightly more decorum. he really wants to go at it but will restrain himself because most people aren't willing to be treated like a chew toy. luckily for him, gray and cana aren't most people! because they both wear pretty exposing clothing, gray and cana have no qualms about showing off sting's bite marks on their skin. sting always turns bright red when they tease him about it.

♡ laxus and cobra don't really feel the Bite instinct due to being second gen, but cobra is a little shit and bites people for the fun of it. laxus is completely unbothered when natsu clings to him like a koala and gnaws at him.

Also I have a theory that at least a serious contributing factor in the 'trans glowup' meme is you can generally see the unhappiness in the 'before' and how they feel in the 'after'. Thoughts?

Oh that's so real because before I came out I always felt SO uncomfortable having my picture taken so I'd always look awkward or unhappy. Now that I'm happy with how I look I'm able to take a pic where I actually look like I'm enjoying myself lol

I would spend thousands of dollars to see all of the marauders era characters attempt an escape room. I can already picture Lily, Regulus, and Remus actually trying to get work done, while Barty and Evan rip apart floorboards in the name of “Finding the key”, then over at the entrance Sirius and James trying to force the door open with brute strength, meanwhile Mary and Dorcas have just accepted the fact that they are not getting out and laughing in the corner, Marlene tries to order pizza to the place (Unsuccessfully), Pandora is breaking things (but in a helpful way?), Peter is sobbing on the floor the whole time, and Minerva is watching it all unravel from the security cameras.
