When you think of the greatest voices of the 20th century, the late, great Nat King Cole has to be near the top of the list. He proved that he was more than just an exceptional pianist (as leader of the King Cole Trio, of course) and branched out to become among the biggest pop stars of the postwar era, along with Sinatra, Martin, Crosby, Belafante, etc., not to mention a pioneer as far as Black Americans in the world of entertainment were concerned - he was among the first to host a variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, though it was criminally short-lived (airing from November 1956 to December 1957), due to the show's inability to find national sponsors, despite being a hit. Commenting on this, Cole said, "Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark." Tells you everything, doesn't it? Cole was also a major influence on a generation of stars that followed, including Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye, who famously modeled his early career after him, before being pushed in a more mainstream direction. "Orange Colored Sky", written by Milton DeLugg and Willie Stein was recorded by Cole in 1950, becoming a huge hit that year, peaking at No. 5. The swingin' orchestra was conducted by Stan Kenton. This song is pure, unadulterated joy from beginning to end. FLASH! BAM! Self-covers in the vein of The Jazz Age by The Bryan Ferry Orchestra are not that common, but self-covers in general are. Still, they were more prevalent during the period of musicians, such as Nat King Cole, so it shouldn't surprise us their discographies contains many cases of the re-interpretations. Since we mentioned Mr. Cole, we should talk about his The Nat King Cole Story, which consisted of the re-recordings of his previous tunes. Nonetheless, it must be said that the reason for that was mostly technological, the development of the stereo sound caused many to redo their opuses to fit their compositions in this modern context. Unsurprisingly, Nat King Cole's professionalism shone as always, he gave his best and it's no wonder that the versions from this album are still played.
