Thinking about Bitch from Worm and The Bastard from Super Crooks, and the contrast is funny to me because with Bitch, the situation is that she picked that name as a form of considered rebellion in order to make it incredibly awkward and annoying for the Heroes and Media to talk about her criminal exploits. And this extends to that not being her “official” name, she’s in all the databases and headlines as “Hellhound”, a name that got picked for her. All of which serves to highlight the setting’s detailed and considered approach to how superheroism interfaces with personal identity, PR and marketing, and the power of framing and narrative shaping held by large institutions. (It also provides a character contrast with Skitter, who also got named by the powers that be, not because her chosen identity was unpalatable, but because she herself was too indecisive to pick a name and they needed to call her something internally.)
And then in Super Crooks you’ve got A-list supervillain The Bastard, and the reason that his supervillain name is “The Bastard” is that any time he walks into any kind of situation at all, he just does something so unspeakably awful that when he leaves, all the survivors can do is just shake their heads and go, “Jesus. What a Bastard.”
