I think horse girl movies are a lot like bodice rippers and the romance genre as a whole in that the general public is criticizing this thing that is more or less intended for a specific demographic, and also that criticism is based obtusely in reality without ever having an understanding about what these genres are actually for.
Problematic romances are power fantasies for women, and in so many cases, the problematic aspects ONLY act as a framing device to get the woman IN the empowered situation. (Like, the beginning of Fruit's Basket is wild, but all of the weird and kinda shady elements are just there to get Tohru in a situation where she is in a secure but whimsical and interesting living situation, she's surrounded by overprotective boys she could probably date, and she's fulfilling an unselfish purpose and changing another person's life for the better via being a stellar and selfless house keeper and eventually breaking the curse.)
Horse bond media (both horse girl and horse boy movies) are in very much the same situation because people who don't like horses don't get it, and trained equestrians get hung up picking apart technical details and decrying any horse movie as "bad" because "horses don't have eyebrows" or "the girl horse is feminized" or "this that and the other is unrealistic." Both parties neglect to realize that horse bond movies are for the disempowered (teenage girls and men in prison) and the movies are ABOUT connecting very deeply with a nonhuman entity that is both equally misunderstood and no one in the world WANTS to understand them.
If a horse is difficult, it's branded as dangerous. If a person is struggling in a way no one has patience or empathy for, they're treated like they're dangerous or a lost cause, therefore being isolated and disempowered. But that person sees a horse and they see someone who cannot advocate for themself who just needs a little gratitude or understanding or accommodation. The "special weshial white girl" gives the horse that, and they find self actualization within and empower each other.
In the words of Torr from the incitus movie Monocerus, "It's not about being good, Sara. It's not about horses at all. It's about you."

Obscutober 2024 Day 11: Derecho ⛈️
----------
Derecho (n.)
a widespread and severe windstorm that moves rapidly along a fairly straight path and is associated with bands of rapidly moving thunderstorms
----------
Today’s word is proof that I did not go over the prompt list with as finetooth of a comb as I should have—We really didn’t need “rolling wind storms” and “trees dead-from-storms” back-to-back. 😅
Oh well! Not much to be done about it now. 🤷‍♀️
Click the "Keep Reading" and we'll talk more about my thoughts/process for keeping this one as different as I could from yesterday's. ✨
⭐️ Like My Art and Want to see more of it? Here's All My Links! ⭐️
----------
Just to reiterate: I honestly cannot believe that when I was making final adjustments to the Obscutober prompt list that I both didn't notice this little string of nouns we seem to be stuck in (aside from Day 9 serving as a break) and also that "Rampike" and "Derecho," both storm-related words that made it on the list, ended up back-to-back. 🤦‍♀️
And it's not the fault of total randomization, either; I did randomize the words at first, but then deliberately moved some around for reasons much like this...I just somehow missed these two in the process. 😅
Then I still didn't notice until I looked at the list to get started on today's mandala. 🙄
So, naturally, I went into working on this mandala a little worried that I'd have trouble making it different enough from yesterday's. This was not helped by the fact that I came home absolutely wiped after being out most of the day yesterday, so I was in no position to even attempt getting started before going to bed, and then I also slept in late this morning, which set back my whole schedule for the day.
And now you know why today's is going up a little later than I'd really like, too. 😅 Sometimes I just can't catch a break from myself!
"The Ongoing Saga of Mystic's Poor Pacing" aside, I did what I could to separate today and yesterday without totally abandoning what I felt really was the best fit for the word. Primarily, I opted to use black lines instead of white. Though had I realized these two words were next to each other before I made yesterday's, I think letting Derecho have the white lines and making Rampike have black would've been the better way to go. Dead trees would've made a black silhouette work better, white lines make more sense for clouds, etc.
Still, I did what I could and tried to use the black lines to my advantage to focus on lighter, "this is the blue the sky uses to warn you that rain is very much on the way," blues and lighter grays, like maybe if yesterday's colors were a storm at night, this one is a storm during the day when there's more light.
But, of course, since the definition specifically mentions thunderstorms, I felt like I still had to get some little lightning bolts in there. I kept them intentionally small since "Derecho" is more about the wind that precedes the storms, but these did get more proper "lightning shape lines" versus yesterday's lightning mostly being a strong suggestion based on color placement.
However, swirls for "wind" were, in my opinion, completely non-negotiable. But I did try my best to structure them differently and give them a tad more complexity than yesterday's. If we were looking at just the line work, I'm not fully convinced I pushed them far enough, but I think the coloring helps sell the differences a lot more. Then, I had briefly considered adding some kind of rain representation to yesterday's art—whether in the mandala lines or in the background coloring. You can probably guess that I am now super glad I didn't, because that gave me one more tool up my sleeve to help make today's mandala noticeably different! I'm not entirely sold on the exact way I ended up doing the raindrops, but I didn't really have any better ideas so once I was able to get them shaped in a way I was happy with, I opted to just roll with this and try not to otherwise worry about it too much. I think the main thing that bothers me is the raindrops look "too calm" and not really like they're coming from a storm. Again though: I didn't really have any better ideas. I tried a couple of things before settling on what you see and none of it was jiving with me. 🤷‍♀️
For as worried as I went in though, and for what quibbles I still have, I like it a lot more than I thought I would! So I'll consider that a success and cut my losses for today. 👍
...I feel like this description should be longer, but I think you all want to read a play-by-play of drawing a lot of swirly shapes several times about as much as I feel like writing one. Which is to say: Not very much at all!
So I'll just leave it here, and hopefully I can get this baby cross-posted in record time because I haven't had dinner yet and won't want to get started on that until cross-posting is either done-done or very close to it. 🤪 See you Sparklers tomorrow! 🤗

Last nights storm brought winds, and this Doug lost his head.

Just blew his top.

The downed part of the fir goes from left to right across this photo. It covers our path to the barn, and a whole pond and is at least 150 feet long. There will be a bit of clean up, as the path needs to be clear but most of this fir will be left for wildlife habitat.

Hey! I saw what you wrote with Crowley and Aziraphale being in a cabin in the middle of a windstorm! I think this ask is gonna be inspired off of that, but if you could write something about Crowley having fun outside in a middle of a windstorm and Aziraphale just trying to get him to come inside the bookshop and Crowley being a little shit and ends up ultimately dragging Azi in the wind with him and fluff ensues? Thank you!
Lovelies, I did it. i wrote an entire ficlet? oneshot? fanfic idek, SOMETHING for this wonderful anon, I hope you like it, and please dont be scared to send in more, I love doing these --------------------- Soho Windstorm Length: 715 words Context warnings: Language
Tumblr media
--------------------------
It had been a normal day so far. As far as you could consider a normal day for an angel and a demon. That was until a windstorm somehow got knocked off its path and ended up in Soho, how? Aziraphale could only imagine. Though, he thought as he stared out the window, eyebrows furrowed, it had to do with the man dancing in the wind,
Crowley was having the best time she had had in over 6000 years.
Yes, admittedly he had diverted the windstorm, but eh fuck it, if anyone found out, he did it for demonic reasons. Crowley was dancing in the wind. Dancing, not on a pinhead, but in the middle of an empty Soho street while a windstorm caused chaos around him.
He wasn't really dancing, not really, but more like, doing what he wanted. Spinning in circles, shouting at the top of his lungs, that's what it mostly consisted of, The wind whipped his face, leaves swarming and battering his shoes as he did his own thing in the wind.
Crowley felt a sense of freedom, he was always provided with some sort of freedom by the wind, a breeze on the hottest day, a short fast blast through a fan, it always provided him happiness, he didn't know where it came from, but he wasn't against it.
Crowley paused mid-spin as he saw his angel staring at him through the bookshelf window, he raised a single eyebrow at her angel, smirking as he raised a singular arm outwards, as an invitation, seeing whether her angel would come out into the wind and be wild, let go of the worries, let the thought of Armageddon, of looming danger from their minds “No” the angel mouthed at the demon with a small internal smile, “Come inside, you silly demon” *come inside where it’s warm, come in, and we can drink, and I can play the record you like…the one about nightingales* The demon laughed, jogging over to the bookshop door and pulling it open, gusts of strong wind shooting in and disrupting the nearby papers, to which Aziraphale let out a strangled gasp/ cry of “Crowley, dear really?!” The demon laughed, grabbing her angel’s wrist, pulling them outside the comfort of their bookshelf and into the winds outside, laughing at the angel's cries as the bookshop doors were miracled shut. “C’mon angel!” the demon yelled, pulling Aziraphale by the hands into the wind, “loosen up, angel!” “Dear, let me back inside!” the angel pleaded, with a fleeting look back at his book shop, before he was startled by Crowley's body wrapping itself around his in a tight hug, “2 more minutes?” Crowley asked, “Then we can go drink?” Aziraphale let out a small murmur in response Crowley laughed, releasing her angel and spinning on the spot, whooping and laughing, the angel stood to the side, huddling himself under the awning of a building, watching his demon with soft eyes and a small smile to join them, he loved - uh…liked, seeing his friend…his demon like this, free of the burdens hell gave him, free of all the pain on his shoulders, just openly himself, just openly happy. “Shit!” Crowley laughed as the wind got harder, “Get inside, get inside it’s bloody freezing” “I told you!” Aziraphale scolded letting them both into the warmth of the bookshop and deadbolting the door behind them, He miracled the record played to start the familiar hum of a song Crowley was partial to, as the demon sat down on the sofa, perking up with a wide grin as the familiar notes of the song he had introduced to them in 1941 played though the record player, “You don't have the record” he laughed, leaning forward with a smirk and a glint in his yellow eyes, “Bought it yesterday” the angel said, *just for you* “What one is it today?” Crowley asked, referring to the wine, “I’ll go have a look,” Aziraphale said, walking away, further into the shop, leaving Crowley on the sofa with a grin on his face, as he listened to the familiar voice play…
The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley square
I hope you liked it anon!! - Angel

Just watched the most glorious video relating to an upcoming horse game called Legend of Khiimori and I guess people are losing their minds.
Because the developer responded to a tweet where someone said they'd buy the game if it didn't appeal to the "woke", but as the developer had her pronouns in her profile that wasn't likely. Said developer replied that "For every similar comment they would add a new set of pronouns" paraphrased.
And there are people taking that comment at face value and saying they gutted their potential buyers by adding more pronouns.
In the game itself you don't choose your pronouns. You play as a female character, the steam page even has the female protagonist tag.
This is too much XD
