Everyone knows the Hollingsworth family, and everyone has already made their minds up about them. Miles, by his own curation, has been labeled the problem child. He’s the black sheep, the fuck up, an adrenaline junkie determined to ruin his family’s image – He’s heard it all. He’s used to the disappointing feeling, the tightness in his chest when he realizes he’s been written off rather than actually seen. The reputation of their family has always been seen as more important than what goes on behind closed doors, given his father’s career in politics. Being the son of the Mayor comes with expectations, which includes keeping a stiff upper lip when your father gives you a black eye. Multiple times.

It breeds an anger in Miles, one that has him caught between screaming “How is no one seeing this” and “Fuck you, I’ll show you a problem child”. He hopes university would give him freedom from the feeling, and from his father’s influence; But it’s hard to escape from under someone’s thumb when your name is on the side of the building. And while it may not be confirmed (or needed), his father essentially bought Miles’ way into TU. There’s a determination in him to prove he’s nothing like his father — One that manifests in his writing, his friendships, and his relationships. However, it also comes in the form of chaotic rebellion, and the desire to push both people and things to a boiling point. If they already think you’re a screw up, you might as well give them a show.

WINSTON CHU – roommate, best friend.  Miles and Winston could not be more different from one another, and yet the two can’t think of a time where they weren’t best friends. At first glance, most assume the two would have nothing in common – When in reality, there’s no duo that understands each other better than Miles and Winston. Their differences have always complimented each other well, bringing a balance by providing what the other needs. Miles breaks Winston out of his shell, reminding him that he’s no sidekick. In return, Winston helps pull Miles out of his own head, often having to save him from himself. 

GRACE CARDINAL — life saver, verbal sparring partner. It’s not uncommon for Grace’s computer skills to result in some kid hiring her to fix something for them — Forge a letter, make up a report card, or in Miles’ case? Change a few grades last minute. Their relationship had been strictly business, but it had been clear from their first conversation that Miles is one of the few people who can keep up with Grace’s sharp tongue. Though the two wouldn’t necessarily consider themselves friends, they certainly argue like they’ve known each other for years. 

MAYA MATLIN — party friend. Having run into one another at multiple parties over the summer, Maya and Miles formed an unexpected friendship. The basis of it? Don’t get familiar. The agreement is simple: They’re strangers, who know everything about one another. Conversations after smoking a bowl or while drinking jungle juice often lead to far too honest admissions, ones neither want to be known while sober. Any time the two were together, they rarely stayed sober for long. Their friendship was intended to have an end date — They were supposed to leave for the school in the fall, never to see each other again. Until move in day. 

ESME SONG – ex-girlfriend. Miles’ relationship with Esme was doomed from the start. Their relationship had been built on high highs and low lows, able to give anyone watching severe whiplash. Though they may have cared for one another, they never brought out the best in each other. They seemed to thrive on the chaos, with Esme in particular being more than willing to cross lines to try and keep their relationship afloat. Eventually Miles called things off, knowing that disaster would follow close behind. Esme seemed to move on over the summer, but Miles isn’t naive enough to believe that means she won’t come tearing back into his life with the intent of pulling him back under.

If I remember correctly I believe it wash the bloodiesht day in Britain'sh hishtory. They shuffered 57,000 cashualtiesh and the battle lashted from July 1, 1916 to November 18, 1916. It lashted about 141 daysh and ended with the British only advancing about 7 milesh. Winter weather forced it to hault and it became a shtalemate of attrition! If you'd like I could tell you more! Si Brad Pitt anunciara hoy su homosexualidad no causaría tanta conmoción como la que generó el actor Rock Hudson en 1985: claro que el anunció de este galán de Hollywood venía con la consecuencia de otro anuncio más fuerte: padecía lo estragos del VIH. Un mazazo que anunciaba que la homosexualidad o la bisexualidad eran más que secretos a viva voz: cualquier artista, por muy machote que se presentara en pantalla o en público, podría tener un pasado gay bajo las sábanas.

El mundo del espectáculo, que suele mostrar aristas mucho más benévolas de las que esconde, ha visto (u ocultado) a artistas gays, lesbianas y bisexuales casi desde siempre. Y éstos se han visto obligados a mantener una realidad paralela para esconder sus verdaderas inclinaciones sexuales, con el fin de evitar cualquier consecuencia negativa sobre sus carreras.

¿Que todo tiempo pasado fue mejor? No en este caso. Actores como Richard Chamberlain (celebrado tras su protagónico en la miniserie ”El pájaro canta hasta morir”: pregúntale a tu madre o a tu abuela si este título no te suena) o George Takei (“Viaje a las estrellas”) tuvieron que “salir del armario” a una edad avanzada, cuando los mejores años de sus carreras ya habían pasado. No todos tienen la suerte de “estar afuera” y gozar de una vida laboral extraordinaria, como Sir Ian McKellen (de la saga ”El Señor de los Anillos”, por mencionar el más popular de sus distinguidos trabajos) o la conductora Ellen DeGeneres, lo que tampoco quiere decir que la hayan tenido fácil.

Las etiquetas y los temores están cayendo. Los artistas de la actualidad exponen sus realidades sexuales con tal desparpajo que probablemente les cause envidia y satisfacción a quienes no lograron sortear el estigma en años pasados. He aquí algunos de estos casos. 

1 - Nicholas Hamilton

Fue el hijo rebelde que se le plantó a papá Viggo Mortensen en la celebradísima “Capitán fantástico” (2016) y el deleznable Henry Bowers en “It” (2017) e “It: Capítulo Dos” (2019). La foto lo presenta en la premiére de ésta última producción en compañía de su novio Mihali Sergakis. No ha establecido definición alguna sobre si se reconoce como una persona gay, bisexual, pansexual o queer. Y, honestamente, no importa.

 2 - Slade Pearce

Uno de sus primeros trabajos fue en la película “Los tuyos, los míos y los nuestros” (2005), en donde encarnaba uno de los ocho hijos de Rene Russo, los cuales se juntaban con los diez del rectísimo almirante de la Guardia Costera, encarnado por Dennis Quaid, para provocar un caos hogareño sin precedentes. Desde entonces, Pearce (el caballero de la derecha) ha ido alternando participaciones televisivas en series como “Dr. House”, “Ghost Whisperer” o “Crossing Jordan” y en películas como “Air Buddies”, “Whitney Brown” o “Miss Marzo”. El 11 de octubre de 2018 publicó un mensaje revelando su temor inicial a revelar su homosexualidad. Un camino extenso y de mucha crisis personal, pero tras el cual, después de mucho tiempo, había logrado hacer las paces con sí mismo y aceptarse tal como era, instando a que quienes se hallen en su misma situación a que no teman hacerlo porque vale la pena.

3 - Amybeth McNulty

“Anne With An E“. Sólo el título de esta serie canadiense será un dato más que suficiente para reconocer a la protagonista de esta mención. Irlandesa de nacimiento, en la ficción está profundamente enamorada del bombón de Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann) mientras que en la vida real se ha definido como bisexual: fue el 18 de junio de este tristemente célebre 2020, y casi “sin querer queriendo”.

4 - Josie Totah 

Hubo un tiempo en que Josie Totah llevaba en los créditos de su trabajos en cine y televisión el nombre de JJ Totah. JJ inició su camino en la actuación en 2012 en una serie de comedia con sketches llamado “Kroll Show”. La televisión acogió al entonces pequeño, que desperdigó su talento en series de Disney como “Jessie”, “Nina Needs to Go!” o “Princesita Sofia“ hasta que comenzó a ganar notoriedad al aparecer en la aclamada serie “Glee“ como el avispado Myron Muskovitz. En 2016 llegó al cine en cintas como “Time Toys” y “Other People” hasta que da un gran paso al aparecer en “Spider-Man: De regreso a casa” (2017). Totah ha desarrollado gran parte de su carrera en la televisión: estrenada en 2020, “Magic Camp” sería la última vez filmó con apariencia masculina: en la serie de Netflix “No Good Nick” (2019) ya empezaremos a verla acreditada en un rol femenino. Aunque no sabemos si Lisa Haddad, nombre de su personaje, fue concebida originalmente como una adolescente transexual o como una mujer.

5 y 6 - Connor Jessup y Miles Heizer

Quién hubiera adivinado que el chico de las series “Falling Skies” y “Locke & Key” y el actor de “Por trece razones” habrían entablado un romance, pero aquí están. Jessup había hecha pública su orientación sexual en un posteo en Instagram del 24 de junio de 2019, en el que revelaba que ya la conocía desde sus trece años (https://www.instagram.com/p/BzE6A9llBf2/?utm_source=ig_embed). Heizer, por su parte, nunca utilizó sus redes sociales para ofrecer algún comentario (¿por qué debería hacerlo?) sobre su vida personal, pero aquí está.

7 - Jaden Smith

Hijo de los actores Will Smith y Jada Pinkett Smith (a esta altura, ¿quién no lo sabe?), Jaden arrancó su carrera en el videoclip de “Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)”, tema escrito e interpretado por papá Will para la película “Hombres de negro II”. Primer paso de una carrera en la que su progenitor fue criticado por nepotismo, ya que su vástago lo acompañó en “En busca de la felicidad” (2007), “Karate Kid” (la versión del 2010, producida por su padre) o “Después de la Tierra” (2013). Su carrera fluctúa entre la actuación y la música, cuyo géneros predilectos son el hip hop y el rap. 

En un concierto efectuado en noviembre de 2018, Jaden afirmó que el rapero Tyler The Creator era su pareja. Parecía broma, pero el muchacho lo confirmó en una entrevista para “Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio, The Sunset Tapes: A Cool Tape Story”.

8 - Bella Thorne

Actriz, modelo y cantante, Thorne goza de una carrera extensa que se inició en el modelaje a los seis meses y continuó con un rol no acreditado en la comedia “Inseparablemente juntos” (o “Pegado a ti”, 2003), adonde trabajó junto a su hermano Remy. A principios de la siguiente década, su fama despegó de la mano de su asociación con Disney a través de apariciones en un episodio de “Los hechiceros de Waverly Place”, otro de “Buena suerte, Charlie”, la película de Disney Channel “Amienemigos” (2012), la serie “A todo ritmo” (en la que compartió protagonismo con Zendaya) y un rol secundario en la película “ Alexander y un día terrible, horrible, malo... ¡muy malo!” (2014). 

A título personal, 2016 fue un año ajetreado para ella: finalizó una relación con el actor británico Gregg Sulkin, tuvo un romance efímero con Tyler Posey y se declaró bisexual; más tarde se rectificaría, reconociéndose, en julio de 2019, como pansexual.

Si quizás conoces su rostro es porque ha desempeñado casi toda su carrera en el ámbito televisivo, en especial en canales de entretenimiento infantil como Disney (”Hannah Montana”, “A todo ritmo”, “Doctora juguetes”, “Sydney como Max”) o Nickelodeon (”Wendell & Vinnie”, “Bella y los Bulldogs”, “Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn”). El 25 de junio de 2017, Handleson posteó esta imagen en su cuenta de Instagram. Su declaración: “Hace un par de años me he venido sintiendo más y más confortable con respecto a mi sexualidad y creo que estoy listo para compartirlo con el resto del mundo. Finalmente estoy en una etapa de mi vida en la que puedo decir: Estoy orgulloso de lo que soy. Estoy orgulloso de ser gay”. 10 - Joshua Rush

Y por último, el caballero que ha tenido el honor de personificar al primer personaje adolescente y gay en una serie de Disney: el inolvidable Cyrus Goodman en “Andi Mack”. Rush comenzó a modelar a los diez meses de edad y a actuar en el 2009 en un papelito en la serie “Private Practice”. Entonces, ni siquiera contaba ocho primaveras. 

Así sumó pequeños roles televisivos hasta que en el 2012 es llamado a convertirse en el nieto de Bette Midler y Billy Crystal en la comedia “S.O.S.: Familia en apuros”. Tras años alternando actuación en vivo con doblaje (en series como “Clarence”, “Star Versus las Fuerzas del Mal” o “La guardia del león”), en 2017 llega su gran oportunidad con “Andy Mack”.

Activista ambiental y político (se identifica con el Partido Demócrata), el 6 de agosto de 2019 declara, además de ser judío, que tiene algo en común con su personaje más consagrado: también él pertenece a la comunidad LGBTQ, identificándose como bisexual.
