SailGP’s United States team has been purchased by technology investor and founding Uber engineer Ryan McKillen, Margaret McKillen, and two-time world champion sailor Mike Buckley. They are joined by a diverse group of investors representing the sport, technology, entertainment, and media industries.
The Avenue Sports Fund, led by Avenue Capital Group CEO Marc Lasry, is the lead investor in what will be the largest team acquisition in SailGP history. Other members of the investment group include actress and producer Issa Rae; world champion heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder; global DJ and producer Gryffin; and NFL stars DeAndre Hopkins, Malik Jackson, Roquan Smith and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Additional members include University of Alabama football star Dallas Turner; former U.S. soccer player Jozy Altidore; University of Michigan basketball legend Katelynn Flaherty Yates; Muse Capital’s Assia Grazioli-Venier; and serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.
Under the new U.S. SailGP Team structure, Ryan McKillen will serve as Chairman, and Mike Buckley as Chief Executive Officer. The team has appointed seven-time world champion sailor Taylor Canfield as team driver.
“By bringing together this remarkable group to acquire the United States SailGP Team, we have reached an important milestone in the growth of our sport,” said Ryan McKillen, U.S. SailGP Team Co-owner and Chairman.
“As sailors, we love this sport and want to introduce it to millions; as entrepreneurs, we recognize the potential and growth trajectory of SailGP and how our U.S. SailGP Team can introduce the future of on-water racing at the highest level. Our incredible ownership group is a testament to the growth and expansion of SailGP into the mainstream.”
“We believe that diversity is a competitive advantage and it needs to start at the top,” said Mike Buckley, U.S. SailGP Team Co-owner and CEO. “We have assembled the most diverse ownership group in the history of our sport. Collectively, we have an enormous amount of work to do on and off the water, but I think that I have shown I am not going to back down from this important challenge.”
Well, this sounds pretty okay compared to all of the possibilities for horrible/random/inappropriate sponsorship I was worried about. Mostly pro athletes from other sports and people who were affiliated with the unsuccessful Stars + Stripes USA challenge for the 2021 America’s Cup (who should have been the US team instead of American Magic...) Firing Jimmy so suddenly doesn’t sit well with me, but overall it could be way worse.

Quote
Jack would say something, and you'd have to think about it for a few days before it'd come into clarity. He'd always try to illustrate a point by telling war stories... Back then you couldn't get through a conversation without hearing a war story. I remember asking Jack if he believed in God, and if there was a God. He said that everything comes through our sense of perception, and it my not be reality at all. And I remember him talking about being in a church with his group in WWII. And his captain said something about not lighting a match, not talking, not doing anything, because the enemy was nearby. It was pitch black, and he had to sit there quietly for hours. And after a while he could discern shapes, and see little figures within the church, and he said something about this proving there was no such thing as abolute darkness. Nothing is black or white. There was no absolute good, and no absolute evil, and therefore there was no supreme being.

Jack Kirby and Mike Thibodeaux Turtle Soup #4 page 20 splash (1992) Source
“This page came along when Kirby's frequent collaborator of the era, Michael Thibodeaux, asked the King to pencil a splash page for a seven page story he was producing for Turtle Soup, a collection of Turtles stories by artists other than their creators, Eastman and Laird. The resulting image is a stunner with Michelangelo squaring off against a huge fanged ape. Stylistically it works perfectly and makes you wonder what could have been if Kirby had ever tried his hand at a full TMNTs story. It is significant to note that this art is not light-boxed like many Kirby piece of this era, but inked directly on Kirby's pencil art.”

TV GUIDE: LOST & FOUND
December 16, 1989
On December 16, 1989, Lucille Ball was featured on the cover of TV Guide on a side bar story about the long-lost “I Love Lucy Christmas Special”. The main cover story profiled Neil Patrick Harris star of "Doogie Howser M.D.” a series about a young prodigy doctor.
The inside article was penned by Neane Rudolph. This was one of many posthumous TV Guide cover images for Lucille Ball, who passed away eight months earlier.
The article states that the show was first discovered and partly aired after Ball’s death and gradually was restored to completion for this December 18, 1989 broadcast.
The first telecast in 1989 was entirely in black and white, although in 1990 the wrap-around segments (new material) was colorized, but kept the flashbacks in black and white. Eventually, the episode was fully colorized and became a Christmas tradition for CBS, pairing it with a newly colorized episode from the 179 episode catalog of “I Love Lucy” programs. This tradition has been paused in 2020, likely due to the worldwide pandemic’s disruption of resources to colorize a companion episode. It is, however, available on DVD.
In addition to the article about the special, there is an ad from the CBS affiliate and a TV Guide Close-Up talking about the special and its 33 year absence from the airwaves.
Ratings Winner! The special easily won its time slot for CBS with a rating of 18.5, against the second half hour of ABC’s “McGyver” (11.6), Fox’s “21 Jump Street” (5.4), and the ABC TV remake of “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” (11.5). The special’s lead-in was a re-run of “Major Dad” (13.6). It was the ratings winner that evening, even beating “Monday Night Football” by a half a ratings point. Clearly, there was an appetite for Lucy, and this incentivized CBS to pursue future telecasts from their catalog of “Lucy” episodes.
On the same date (Saturday, December 16, 1989) The Cedar Rapids (IA) Gazette’s TV Vision supplement featured the special on their front page. The article was written by Jay Bobbin of Tribune Media Services.
Michael Hill of the Baltimore Evening Sun dedicated his syndicated column to the special, although it appeared in papers on various dates. On December 16th it was printed in The Owensboro (KY) Messenger-Inquirer, among others.
Lisa Meals of the Jackson (TN) Sun, chose to profile local Lucy-lover Darlene Allen’s reaction to the unearthed Christmas special.
Even Canada got excited about the special when Mike Boone of the Montreal Gazette included it in his Channels column.
Perhaps not coincidentally (since the he is a central part of the Christmas episode), December 16, 1989 also saw a spate of articles about Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky. Many concentrated on his drumming career, but some talked of him being the last surviving cast member. The Christmas Special, however, was not the central topic of the various articles, which were from AP and Gannett sources.

By Dr. Shane Rasmussen
Photos by Chris Reich, NSU Photo Services
NATCHITOCHES – The audience at the 40th annual Natchitoches-Northwestern State University Folk Festival held on July 26-27 was entertained and educated about the rich and diverse cultural offerings of the state. The Festival featured traditional Louisiana foods, Kidfest activities, music, traditional crafts, narrative sessions, musical informances, and cultural exhibits. This year’s Festival theme “Vive la Louisiane!” was a great success, with a very happy audience.
The Festival opened with a rousing dance, beginning with Cajun dance lessons, followed by Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue, and the night closed out with Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band. Side stage performances included Natchitoches gospel group Joyful Sounds, 50 Man Machine, which includes NSU faculty Paul Forsyth, Collier Hyams, and Oliver Molina, and an open jam with Max & Marcy, Ed Huey, and Cane Mutiny.
Saturday’s events included performances in Prather Coliseum by 50 Man Machine, Creole la la with Goldman Thibodeaux and the Lawtell Playboys, the Louisiane Vintage Dancers, Brandy Roberts, the Rayo Brothers, Tab Benoit, Jamie Berzas & the Cajun Tradition Band, the Stewart Family and Friends Bluegrass Band, line dance lessons by the Cajun French Music Association Dance Troupe, the Canneci N’de Band of Lipan Apache, zydeco dance lessons by Avila Kahey, Wayne & Same Ol’ 2 Step, Hardrick Rivers and the Rivers Revue Band, Celtic Music with the Kitchen Session of Baton Rouge and a jam session with Max and Marcy.
In addition to stage performances there were narrative sessions and music informances, including conversations about American songwriting, culture & costumes of 19th century Louisiana, Tab Benoit’s The Voice of the Wetlands Fondoution, and the musical journey of Vanessa Niemann (aka Gal Holiday). Also featured was a music informance by Tab Benoit. Outdoor activities included demonstrations by the Central Louisiana Dutch Oven Cookers, the Red River Smiths, the Southern Stock Dog Association, and Wash Day, presented by the West Baton Rouge Museum. This year the Festival continued a series of free workshops for Festival attendees. Festival goers attended a Cajun accordion workshop by Jamie Berzas and Bruce Daigrepont.
The annual Louisiana State Fiddle Championship was also held on Saturday in the Magale Recital Hall as part of the Festival. Fiddle Championship judges included Steve Birdwell, Steve Harper, Henry Hemple, and Clancey Stewart. The new Louisiana Grand Champion is Ron Yule of DeRidder. Second place winner was Joe Suchanek of Merryville, with Owen Meche of Arnauldville placing third. Meche also took first place in the 21 and under championship division.
Suchanek took first in the 60 and up championship division, with Yule coming in second, Birgit Murphy of Opelousas in third, Mark Young of Balise in fourth, Wilfred Luttrell of DeRidder in fifth, and Ron Pace of Alexandria in sixth. Luttrell and Yule also took first place in the twin fiddles competition.
As the new Louisiana State Fiddle champion, Yule also performed on the main stage in Prather Coliseum. Dr. Lisa Abney managed the fiddle championship. Dr. Susan Roach from Louisiana Tech University emceed the championship.
Four musicians and a renowned filé maker were inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center’s Hall of Master Folk Artists. Inductees included Louisiana Music Hall of Famer Tab Benoit, who also served as honorary Festival Chair, Cajun musicians Jamie Berzas and Bruce Daigrepont, filé maker John Oswald Colson, and country singer Vanessa Niemann.
Dr. Shane Rasmussen, director of the Louisiana Folklife Center, led the induction ceremony, assisted by State Representative Kenny Cox and Dustin Fuqua, Chief of Resource Management at Cane River Creole National Historical Park. In addition, the honorary award of Folklife Angel was given to long-time Festival crew chief James Christopher Callahan, an NSU alumnus.
In addition to 4 book signings and 8 exhibits by such groups as state parks and archives, over 70 craftspeople displayed their traditional work on Saturday. These craftspeople demonstrated and discussed their work with the Festival patrons. Craftspeople displayed accordion making, beadwork, baskets, Czech Pysanky eggs, filé making, flintknapping, folk art, knives, music instruments, quilting, pottery, spinning & weaving, tatting, walking sticks, whittling and needlework, wood carving, and more. 8 food vendors provided a cornucopia of traditional Louisiana foods to the Festival audience.

#JackedKirby - The Great Gatsby... Kirby Style!!! 💥💥💥 I was reading an old issue of the Jack Kirby Collector (#Issue27 from Feb of 2000) and the issue contained a round table discussion with Lisa Kirby (Jack’s daughter), Mike Thibodeaux, Richard French And Steve Robertson about unrealized Kirby characters that had gone underdeveloped and unreleased but were being perused posthumously... and low and behold Lisa shared this awesome piece of unreleased art!!! 💥💥💥 Apparently Jack created these two images (and possibly more) for a school project Lisa had on The Great Gatsby... wow! It must be nice to be a student with a master artist as a father to help you out with some illustrations to kick that book report up a notch!!!! We get two photos, one at the grave site of James Gatsby and another with some partying 20s style going on... lots of champagne and flapper style clothing out on the dance floor in that one. Pic 3 of this post is the complete page from The Jack Kirby Collector that the images appeared on... these guys are the best source for little known Kirby goodies!!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheGreatGatsby #Gatsby #LisaKirby #TJKC #TheJackKirbyCollector #Sketches #Dad #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGcomics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu62T8FBY7d/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cvsg4ik0vfiv
