"Popmuziek uit Vittula" van Mikael Niemi
Door omstandigheden is het al een hele tijd geleden dat ik mijn “willekeurige woordenzoeker” nog eens heb moeten gebruiken. Vandaag is het dan eindelijk zo ver en het is meteen prijs: “Popmuziek uit Vittula” van Mikael Niemi. Ik herinner me nog de opwinding toen ik me het boek aanschafte. “Het Zweedse antwoord op The Commitments” stond er als teaser op de kaft. “The Commitments”! Het boek…

Thanks @chaos-of-the-abyss for the tag 😊
Favorite color: uh, that's tough. I don't really have THE one favourite colour, but colours like blue and purple feel very comforting to me.
Last song I listened to: Ballad of the Absent Mare by Leonard Cohen (I once had a horse like that- she comes to his hand but she's not really tame... yeah, fits!)
Last film I watched: uuuummm... no idea. Possibly something I watched with my kids? I'm not at all into films anymore (because I'm totally lacking time)
Currently reading: Popular Music from Vittula by Mikael Niemi. It's a bit of a weird read, but a great one.
Currently watching: again, not watching much due to lack of time and also accessibility, but whenever I can get my hands (or eyes) on it, I'm watching and re-watching Call the Midwife. My favourite show of all time.
Currently craving: anything, really, as I'm currently super hungry but still waiting for my fasting-period to end (I normally have no issues with this at all and been doing it for five years now, but when I'm really tired and stressed out, it gets hard)
Coffee or tea: Both, but not strong at all. My husband keeps calling what I drink 'coloured water', as my body really doesn't cope well with caffeine.
Hobby to try: I really want to learn how to sew properly. I'm so utterly un-talented when it comes to any sort of crafting, but I have to learn this if I ever want to take my cosplay to a more serious level. Also drawing. But TIMEEEEE.
Current AU: My current WIP, where Morgoth wins the first battle of Beleriand and Eglador never gets to become Doriath. So when the Noldor arrive in Beleriand, they find what they so longed for- free lands to rule. Or so they think... A Deed Unforgiven is probably the darkest work I've done yet, and is rated E not without reason. Roughly everyone who lives in canon by the end of the First Age lives. Roughly everyone who is dead in canon by the end of the First Age is dead. Oh, and before anyone asks why I would do that to my most beloved character? Because almost everything is better than what canon does to him imho. Plus we have an agreement that we both like my killing him off xD Not going to tag anyone because that gives me fits of anxiety, but please feel free to consider yourself tagged by me if you come across that post and feel like you want to answer some questions ;-)

Sun and "ants in the legs" at the National Day celebration
Soltorget in Pajala lived up to its name when [the King and Queen] celebrated National Day - the sun shone on all visitors. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel had just as much fun in Nykvarn.
- Let us strive together to build an even stronger and more inclusive country. A Sweden where everyone feels at home, a Sweden for which we all take responsibility, Victoria said in her speech.

According to tradition, the Royal Family split up to celebrate the national day in different parts of Sweden. The [King and Queen] visited Pajala; Victoria and Daniel celebrated the day in Nykvarn, and Prince Carl Philip attended the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. There really was a summer atmosphere in all places.
- Sweet summer is now approaching. It is a flowering time with desire and great beauty. When it's in our bones, and we feel the expectations, it fills us with joy. When everything is possible, there is a promise of endless freedom, just like when we look up at the sky and see the blue-yellow flags flying, the Crown Princess said in her speech.

[The Crown Princess] and Prince Daniel also met a family member who participated in Nykvarn's citizenship ceremony. The King handed out banners to local organizations and associations on Soltorget. Author Mikael Niemi performed a kåseri, and the [King and Queen] were then treated to a lunch with classic Tornedal flavours.

When I was a kid in school, I largely learned Swedish history, Gustav Vasa, Olaus Petri and so on... but the part of Sweden I live in was Danish at that point. (Apart from a few city-local stories, we did not learn Danish history.) Finland, on the other hand, was a part of Sweden, but since it's not anymore, it was largely ignored in our education.
Author Mikael Niemi has spoken about how he lived so far north as a child that the map of Sweden they got in school ended before it got to their town. So even in then-current geography, their "home country" wasn't portrayed to cover their actual home.
When descendants of Swedes living in America take up Swedish traditions, those are frequently traditions that are younger than their ancestors' migration, often picked up from some little corner of the country and made to "represent the nation" in the late 19th or early 20th century.
Nation building is always mythical, and it assumes an "us" that, upon a closer look, isn't as clear-cut as you'd think.
its crazy that so many people say the US isnt a nation. the US is like, way more of a nation than most countries. way less internal diversity. way stronger sense of self-conception. etc. you may be confused, because we're not an *ethnicity*

To Cook a Bear Review
To Cook a Bear was the perfect follow-up to reading Pine. More spook, more isolation, a serial killer. What’s not to love? I loved the setting in Arctic Circle Sweden. In that respect, it had a similar vibe to Midsommar. I also enjoyed the historical setting. It’s been a while since I read a historical setting, especially a time that I study for “real life.” I was thoroughly disturbed by the imagery of mangled dead bodies, so it’s the perfect book to read for October.
Since it is about a serial killer that makes their killings look like bear attacks, I would not recommend reading this if you are sensitive to gore. Trigger warnings: sexual violence, violence, death, assault, and blood. Also in keeping with an odd theme of my reading this year, it also has many references to and descriptions of poop, both animal and human. Why, 2020? All I want is a poop-free book.
My one criticism is that I found the perspective changes a little hard to follow and I found myself getting confused pretty often through the story. This might be because the ARC copy I have from Netgalley had some issues with formatting, though, so I encourage you to read it for yourself and come to your own judgment. Spooky reading!

21st Book I Read in 2022
Title: Koka Björn
Author: Mikael Niemi

Quote
It might just be possible, if you were very careful, to look at the occasional book that could teach you something, such as encyclopedias or repair manuals. The most dangerous kind of book was fiction-- that's where all the brooding was sparked and encouraged. Damnit all! Addictive and risky products like that should only be available in state-regulated monopoly stores, rationed and sold only to those with a license, and mature in age.
