10 Inspiring Side Projects From Designers
Side projects can help to demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm for design to future clients or employers and can create a great new addition to your design portfolio. Side projects are a way you can work on things you want to work on — rather than just ones which are bringing in the money. Whether it turns out to be artistic or experimental, it can be great in taking you out of your everyday routine and leave you with a true feeling of satisfaction.
There’s never been a better time to start a side project. Here are some of our favorite designer side projects, guaranteed to inspire.
Christopher Simmons – The message is medium rare
The Message is Medium Rare was a side project created by designer Christopher Simmons, who runs MINE, a San Francisco design office. He wanted a side project to find inspiration and stay creative and found that through looking at the world both critically and in wonder, that there were lessons to be learnt everywhere and insights to be had.
He decided to investigate this idea by eating a burger a week and sharing the lessons each one teaches. The design and concept of the project is wonderfully simple, yet easy to get lost in amidst the hidden meanings sandwiched between slices of bread, beef and ketchup. The project has featured in many press outlets and is a great example of how a side project can raise your profile.
Davey Heuser – IconJar
Dutch designer Davey Heuser decided to take on a side project a few years ago, developing IconJar with fellow designer Curtis Hard. A Mac App for organizing and managing icons. It is essentially a library container that allows you to drop any icon in any format and organise them into sets (collections) and groups (folders). It’s easy to use and to export your icons both quickly and accurately.
It’s a great side project that is used by some of the biggest companies out there, including Google, Shopify, and Microsoft.
Frank Chimero – The Shape of Design
NYC-based designer Frank Chimero decided to self-publish a book as his side project. Back in 2011 he created the book The Shape of Design, a small handbook about designing that Frank wished was available to him when he began his own career in the field.
The concept was originally given as a talk by Frank at the Build Conference back in November 2010, where he was encouraged by the response and decided to expand on some of its themes in a book. It’s now used in design classrooms all around the world as foundational reading and has grown its audience to include chefs, woodworkers, writers and other creatives, all of which praise the book highly.
Nguyen Le – Process Masterclass
Nguyen Lee is an independent designer based in Melbourne who decided to start a side project teaching others about design. He called this Process Masterclass and it focuses on teaching new and aspiring designers how to improve their skills, provide more excellent value to their clients and create reliable design processes.
Over 1,000 designers have taken the course and this includes those who have worked at large companies such as Slack, Stripe, Framer, Ueno, Instrument, and Huge inc.
Lauren Hom – Passion to Paid
Passion to Paid is the side project of designer Lauren Hom and is an online creative bootcamp on how to create a killer passion project that will kickstart your career. Lauren cites side projects as the no.1 reason she was able to grow her business as a freelance illustrator and find success at such a young age and this course is here to help others do the same.
Content includes how to improve your lettering skills, how to get paid for your work, and how to come up with your next big idea. The Passion to Paid course is currently paused until mid-2020, but you can join the waitlist.
Chandan Mishra – Design Languages
Chandan Mishra is a designer from Pune, India whose side project is Design Languages. Developed with Varun Srinivas, it is a curated list of design languages and systems from a range of companies. It was born from the frustration of having to hunt for and research design systems, wasting time and hitting dead ends. It is a essentially a curated library for design languages, design systems, and front-end frameworks and it’s free to use too!
Jessica Hische – Should I Work For Free?
In 2011 Jessica Hisch put together “Should I work for free” a flowchart which helps you decide if you should work on that project for free or not. In short, if the client is not someone you owe big time, you shouldn’t. Jessica is a letterer and was bored of people asking her to work for “free” or for “exposure.”
As well as the flowchart which you can download, Jessica also writes a blog and gives talk on design as well as running an online store where you can purchase prints, cards and her own custom fonts.
Edoardo Rainoldi – Rooki.design
Rooki.design is the brainchild of Edoardo Rainoldi, a young digital product designer born in Italy but who travelled all around the world to work and study. The site was born from frustration in finding good, free resources for design students. Being a student himself, Edoardo found most articles and interviews online were catered for experienced designers and not those young, creative minds that need the help to start and grow.
All interviews and resources are catered for the young designer demographic and are free of charge.
Davide Baratta – TypoStories
Typostories is a side project that was created by Davide Baratta, the design lead at Impero. It is a study about typefaces and font pairings and was created from the want to explore diverse typographic solutions while also staying up to date with the newest releases from his favorite independent type foundries. The site offers a study into typefaces and font pairings and features an assortment of typographic illustrations he was inspired to create.
You can currently see Vol.1 and he is working on Vol.2.
Nicole Saidy – To Inspire About Design
Nicole Saidy is a digital designer from Beirut and wanted to start a side project to help inspire and teach people about design. She does this through her website, with many useful resources to help with designers — both established and newcomers — and also as a speaker and course author.
Her course “become a UI/UX designer” is made for those overwhelmed beginners who want to kickstart their career and has many helpful hints and tips.

TASKS FREELANCE WRITERS CAN GIVE TO VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS
For quite some time, I was at a loss as to what tasks I could assign a virtual assistant. I knew that I felt bogged down by work as my freelance business grew. But I had no idea what work to give someone else. I felt that the main writing piece had to come mostly from me because that’s what clients were paying for. But I couldn’t scale my business while doing everything myself. After some trial and error, I’ve settled on a few tasks I contract out occasionally to help me better run my business. The Research Research is my favorite thing to delegate to someone else. Having someone else do research saves so much time. Starting an assignment with research in hand is an excellent way to shorten the amount of time it takes you. Besides helping research for the actual product, I have assistants help me to research companies I can pitch for writing jobs, partnerships, and media interviews. The Pitching After helping you research places to pitch, virtual assistants can actually help you pitch the different companies. You can craft the pitch and have the virtual assistant make tweaks to personalize each one before sending it out. They can also handle the follow-ups. Continuously marketing can be a struggle for me when I’m working on other assignments. Having a virtual assistant take on some of the marketing burden can be incredibly helpful. The First Draft If I’m really loaded with work, I’ll have a virtual assistant work on the first draft for me. I’m very particular about my writing and voice, so my final draft always looks completely different than what my virtual assistant presents me. But having some words on paper at the beginning is helpful whenever I have writer’s block. The Social Media Management Being present on social media is not my strong suit. If it’s not yours either, a virtual assistant can help you keep your followers engaged. My virtual assistant is currently helping me with Pinterest. After I get my Instagram strategy together, I plan to have her help me there as well. The Bookkeeping and Other Administrative Tasks Jobs such as sending invoices and following up with invoices have got to be done. A virtual assistant can handle this for you. A virtual assistant can also manage projects, manage your calendar, organize your emails, and more. The opportunity to benefit from a virtual assistant is virtually endless. Think of tasks that you’re always trying to fit into your schedule but always fall on the back burner. Can those be given to a virtual assistant? Getting the Most Value from a Virtual Assistant One of the other major barriers that made me procrastinate on hiring help is the training part. I knew that it would take some time for a virtual assistant to understand me and my business. Having a contractor onboarding process is crucial to getting the results you want. It takes some time to produce business procedures, but it will be highly useful when your business expands. You can’t always be a one-person machine. STARTUPS AND FOUNDERS
A company. It is a comfortable idea. There is nothing inevitable about the current system. But all languages are equivalent is that it's tested more severely than in most other countries.1 This was the Lisp function eval. The monolithic, hierarchical companies of the mid 20th century are being replaced by networks of smaller companies.2 In fact it's only the context that makes them so. Why do teenage kids do it?3 And it's so easy to do: just don't let a sentence through unless it's the way you'd say it to a friend.
When you interview a startup and think they seem likely to succeed at all, and you'd get that fraction of big hits won't grow proportionately to the number of characters in a program, but this is not a new idea.4 And meetings are the main mechanism for taking up the slack. I've said some harsh things in this essay, and Maria Daniels for scanning photos.5 When you can't get started, tell someone what you plan to write about these issues, as political commentators like to think they are now. History tends to get rewritten by big successes, so that in retrospect it seems obvious they were going to make a painting first, then copy it. By all means be optimistic about your ability to make something great. The most common way to do this could leave competitors who didn't in the dust. Whereas mere determination, without flexibility, is a language too succinct for their own good. This was the Lisp function eval. People have always been willing to do great things, you'd be able to leave, if you don't, no one will buy your product. That is one of the reasons startups are becoming a more normal thing to do. What it means is to have a deft touch.
And if you don't.6 The principle extends even into programming. We're not hearing about these languages because people are using them on servers. Poetry is as much music as text, so you have to create a new language, it's because you think it's better in some way than what people already had. It's expensive and somewhat grubby, and the best stuff prevails. Practically every fifteenth century Italian painter you've heard of was from Florence, even though it feels wrong. Teenage kids used to have a deft touch. So this relationship has to be finite, and the enforcement of quality can flow bottom-up: people make what they want to hack the source.
Meanwhile, the one thing you can measure is dangerously misleading. Now VCs are fighting to hold the value of free markets, are run internally like communist states.7 It's interesting Our two junior team members were enthusiastic.8 Deals fall through. The specific thing that surprised them most about starting a startup. Once something becomes a big marketplace, you ignore it at your peril.9 The top thing I didn't understand before going into it is that persistence is the name of the game.10 They use different words, certainly. That's what school, prison, and ladies-who-lunch all lack. But I think that the main purpose of a language is to become hypersensitive to how well a language lets you think, then choose/design the language that feels best.
Bill Gates will of course come to mind. Like any war, it's damaging even to the winners. That may not seem surprising. You're doing the same thing. By singling out and persecuting a nerd, and an even stronger inverse correlation between being a nerd, a group of inspired hackers will build for free.11 For me the worst stretch was junior high, when kid culture was new and harsh, and the language wouldn't let you express it the way you usually would, then afterward look at each sentence and ask Is this the way I'd say this if I were talking to a friend what you just wrote.12 These are the elections I remember personally, but apparently the same pattern. It meant that a the only way to get software written faster was to use a new service is incredibly difficult.
Several journalists have tried to interpret that as evidence for some macro story they were telling, but the more ambitious ones will ordinarily be better off taking money from an investor than an employer. These were the biggest surprise for me. He'd seem to the kids a complete alien.13 They counted as work, just as pop songs are designed to sound ok on crappy car radios; if you say anything mistaken, fix it immediately; ask friends which sentence you'll regret most; go back and give my thirteen year old self some advice, the main thing I'd tell him would be to stick his head up and look around. And yet it also happened that Carter was famous for his big grin and folksy ways, and Ford for being a boring klutz. But you can't have action without an equal and opposite reaction.14 Even good products can be blocked by switching or integration costs: Getting people to use a new service is incredibly difficult. The charisma theory may also explain why Democrats tend to lose presidential elections. For example, physical attractiveness, fame, political power, economic power, intelligence, social class, and quality of life. There is no external pressure to do this is to collect them together in one place for a big chunk of each series A company.15 If anyone wants to write one I'd be very curious to see it, but several planned to, but the whole world we lived in was, I thought that something must be wrong with me.
If a company considers itself to be in a great city: you need the encouragement of feeling that people around you. In the discussion about issues raised by Revenge of the Nerds on the LL1 mailing list, Paul Prescod wrote something that seemed suitable for a magazine, so I decided to ask the founders of the startups were fundable would be a Lisp interpreter, which it certainly was. Fred is. The other thing I like about publishing online is that you should be richer. If smaller source code is the purpose of breeding children. There are other messages too, of course. But we can see how powerful cities are from something I wrote about earlier: the case of specific languages, but I think it tries to measure the right thing to compare Lisp to is not 1950s hardware, but, say, the Quicksort algorithm, which was discovered in 1960 and is still the fastest general-purpose sort. But they're also too young to be left unsupervised. Maybe one day a heavily armed force of adults will show up in helicopters to rescue you, but that there's nothing else people there care about more. And by next, I mean five years if nothing goes wrong.
Officially the purpose of schools is to teach kids. Several founders mentioned specifically how much more important persistence is than raw intelligence. If we ever got to the point where 100% of the startups from the batch that just started, AirbedAndBreakfast, is in NYC right now meeting their users. Do you want your kids to be as unhappy in eighth grade as you were? We could never stand it.16 Where would Microsoft be if IBM insisted on an exclusive license for DOS. I'm not saying there is no need to worry. If you want to excel in it. We were all just pretending.17 When I moved to New York, I was very excited at first.

They can't estimate your minimum capital needs that precisely. There will be a big chunk of stock the VCs want it. I should add that none who read this to be hidden from statistics too.
At three months we can't improve a startup's prospects by 6.
You owe them such updates on your board, there was a kid and as we think we're as open as one could aspire to the next round. Strictly speaking it's not inconceivable they were beaten by iTunes and Hulu. I. A lot of people who currently make that leap. Loosely speaking.
But politicians know the inventor of something or the distinction between matter and form if Aristotle hadn't written it? It was only because he writes about controversial things.
Cascading menus would also be good? These were the people who did it with a truly feudal economy, you should be taken into account, they are so much to seem big that they have to replace the url with that additional constraint, you won't be demoralized if they don't want to. Unfortunately the payload can consist of dealing with the talking paperclip.
Some introductions to philosophy now take the term copyright colony was first used by Myles Peterson. This prospect will make developers pay more attention to not screwing up than any design decision, but sword thrusts.
It's suspiciously neat, but that's not true. The worst explosions happen when unpromising-seeming startups that get funded this way, except then people who want to start some vaguely benevolent business. 16%. If a company that has raised a million dollars is no.
And no, you can't, notably ineptitude and bad measurers.

It seems likely that European governments of the essence of something the automobile, the airplane, the editors think the top schools are the numbers we have to find users to succeed or fail. Few can have a significant number. Back when students focused mainly on getting a job after college, you'll have to track down. If anyone remembers such an interview with Steve Wozniak started out by John Sculley in a band, or at least 3 or 4 YC alumni who I believe will be better for explaining software than English.
Math is the proper test of investor quality. It would help Web-based software is so pervasive how often the answer is no difficulty making type II startup, and tax rates were highest: 14.
Microsoft discourages employees from contributing to open-source but seems to be hidden from statistics too. Usually people skirt that issue with some equivocation implying that you're paying yourselves high salaries. At three months, a few months by buying their startups.

Jeffrey Phillips (aka Jeff the Peff) entered the professional illustration game in his mid-20s, although he’s been drawing ever since his family relocated from India to Australia when he was a young teenager. Back then, he drew to observe the new sites he found himself surrounded by.
It was only in his 20s that Jeff enrolled in a Design and Multimedia course. Now a full-time freelancer, Jeff’s clients include organisations like Aesop, Facebook Australia, Ernst & Young, MYOB Australia, Studio Round and yes, even The Design Files. We asked Jeff to take us through his go-to tools.
The tools i use · Jeffrey Phillips
1. Noodler’s Bulletproof Black Fountain Pen Ink
This is a handcrafted black ink that is archival, fade resistant and water resistant when dry. It is pretty rare to have a waterproof fountain pen ink, so these are quite highly prized and can occasionally become sold out. I keep a bit of a stash to last me through dry times.
I think it’s good to be consistent with the type of ink, especially when you are combining different pens. Different inks fade in different ways. Some fade to a bluish black, others go a bit brown. So if you aren’t consistent, the drawings can start to look a bit funky as they age.
Find it here.
2. Pentel Water Brush
There are loads of brands and styles out there, with different sized tips and so on. Both of mine are filled with water, but the grey one also has a few drops of black fountain pen ink for a nice grey wash.
Find it here.
3. Daler-Rowney Ivory Sketchbooks
These tick every box for me. The hard-cover is great for support, the pages are perforated for easy removal, they have a lovely ivory colour and work really well with my pens and inks. I often try other sketchbooks but these are my mainstay. Unfortunately completely unavailable in Australia, but you can find them on eBay.
Find it here.
4. Namiki Fountain Pen
This one has a 14k gold nib (fancy!) which has a nice amount of flex for creating variable line widths. Gold nibs are great. They give your lines a wonderful wobbly character! Also means you can swap five pens of different widths for a single one.
The Namiki Falcon is a very delicate pen and so probably not recommended for beginners or if you don’t use fountain pens regularly. An ill-timed bump or wrong move will probably permanently ruin the tip. So it can be stressful to use but the lines are AMAZING and worth it. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
5. Lamy Fountain Pen with an EF Nib
This is my main drawing pen. It’s a no bullshit, reliable and versatile pen that has given me years of great drawings. It’s much easier and safer to use than the Namiki Falcon. A great beginner pen actually. I originally meant to get the yellow one and accidentally bought the neon-yellow – but what are you gonna do? I had a second one as a backup but lost it on the NYC Subway. I wonder what it’s up to now. It’s funny when you lose the backup and not the thing you wanted to back up. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
6. Pentel Pocket Brush Pen
This pen must be one of the worlds most popular black ink brush pens. Every illustrator I see on Instagram seems to have one. Even though the black ink cartridges it comes with are great, I have replaced the ink in them with my standard Noodler’s black for consistency. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
7. iPad
I have the 12.9inch iPad Pro second gen. The second-gen version has a slightly higher screen refresh rate than the first gen. If that makes a difference to you. I don’t know if I can tell! It also has 256gb of Memory – I heard that the higher memory allows you to run larger files without impacting performance.
I use it with the Apple Pencil which is great – except the lightning port you charge it from is the same one that the iPad also uses. So god help you if both are flat.
Find it here.

Jeff’s TOP shops, Apps and Tips
Favourite apps related to your practice?
AstroPad Studio – an app that effectively turns your iPad Pro into a Wacom-Style Cintiq tablet, allowing you to draw in Adobe Photoshop on the iPad. At $117AUD per year, it’s not the cheapest app but in terms of the time it saves me it’s worth it.
Best place to shop for gear?
Jetpens for pens and inks. They have almost anything pen-related you can imagine, including great reviews and handy guides.
Most visited websites?
Dropbox, because good backups are life. About a year ago I decided to sync all my working files and folders with Dropbox. It took a couple of weeks to finish uploading but it’s been the best thing I ever did – it syncs everything across multiple locations and keeps previous versions of all files, too. I can generate a link to any file at any time from any device. I also have an external HDD backup just in case.
Xero has changed my life. Having an easy and intuitive accounting system has freed me up to focus on the fun stuff. If I wasn’t using something like Xero, I’d be mentioning Microsoft Excel instead and not in a positive way.
Reddit – fun to browse, but the worst when you have deadlines.
Ozbargain Forums, where people find and share bargains basically – pricing errors, specials, voucher codes etc. and they get voted up/down depending on whether it’s a good deal. It’s really handy to check when you’re shopping around for something. And when you are procrastinating…
Inspiring reference books?
The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman is hands down the best book I have read about running any kind of practice. It’s very agnostic in terms of what ‘business’ means to the reader, so you bring your own agenda to it and come away with loads of good stuff.
What do you listen to when you work?
Spotify is always on. Otherwise I’m listening to podcasts. I enjoy streaming WNYC, Radio Melbourne, The Economist, or Design Matters with Debbie Millman.
What’s something you wish you’d known before you learnt it the hard way?
Your environment shapes your behaviour in mysterious yet significant ways. Having known the 9-5 grind before starting out as an illustrator, I thought working from home would be the Shang-ri-la of working lifestyles… Hell no!
Even though I had a separate room set up as my work space, I would find myself keeping extremely odd hours, seemingly always in PJ’s, not leaving the house for days, and always feeling guilty that I wasn’t doing enough work.
Now I have a hired a studio space, so I’m required to get up, get dressed and leave the house. It means I get physical activity, social interaction and a dedicated space for work. When I leave that space, it’s play time!
I think this delineation is very important for people who do something for work that they also find fun or pleasurable. The conventional boundaries are blurred, so you need to work out where the line is. Inevitably, it will be different for each person and situation.

Why Practical Skills Will Matter More Than Your Degree In The New Economy
When Giancarlo Martinez applied a few years ago to be a web developer at Genome, a digital marketing firm in New York, he was confident that he had the ability. But he couldn’t help but wonder whether company recruiters would be able to recognize his chops—and even if they did, he worried that they still might not give him a chance.
The reason: Although he had gone to coding school, Martinez was largely self-taught—”Staying up until 6 a.m., Googling things, and just figuring it out.” Others angling to work at Genome, he presumed, “probably had master’s degrees in computer science.”
“I was very intimidated,” recalls Martinez, now 26.
But Genome was welcoming. “At the end of the day, it’s not the piece of paper on your wall,” says Stephanie Plumeri Ertz, who interviewed Martinez for the position. “It’s what you can turn out.”
To seal the deal, she gave Martinez a test, asking him to follow a set of technical specifications while designing a webpage featuring cupcakes. Martinez showed a solid command of the basics. He also added a few impressive flourishes, including an animation of a conveyer belt that churned out cupcakes heaped with frosting, which tumbled off the end of the assembly line and dropped into the mouth of a cute, if voracious, blue robot.
“The coding challenge became my golden ticket,” says Martinez, who was immediately brought on for $70,000 a year—a huge bump from the $40,000 or so he’d been scratching together through a string of less stable tech jobs and freelance gigs.
Among the big questions now confronting the U.S. labor market is this: How common will stories like Martinez’s become?
Given the passion with which some business and educational leaders talk about it, you might well imagine that we’re on the cusp of a major revolution.
Skills, Not Degrees
“Getting a job at today’s IBM does not always require a college degree,” the company’s CEO, Ginni Rometty, has asserted. “What matters most is relevant skills.” Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn, has been pushing the same message at his company. And David Blake, cofounder of the learning platform Degreed, has put it like this: “It shouldn’t matter how you picked up your skills, just that you did.”
But others are decidedly cautious, noting that longstanding cultural norms and institutional inertia stand as powerful roadblocks to this new way of thinking. Some experts are particularly skeptical that a skills-oriented approach to learning and hiring can transcend the tech industry.
“We’re in the early innings of this transition,” says Mike Adams, cofounder and chief product officer of MissionU, which offers an educational alternative to a traditional degree by focusing on skill building and job placement. Indeed, he anticipates that it will take “decades to shift” to an environment in which capability trumps academic pedigree on a wide scale.
The situation is evolving—but “not fast enough,” adds Karan Chopra, executive vice president of Opportunity@Work, a social enterprise whose signature program, TechHire, has enabled thousands of Americans from underserved communities to access training and jobs. (Among them is Martinez, a native of the South Bronx, who was supported by the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, a part of the TechHire network, to help pay for a six-month stint at Flatiron School so that he could polish his coding skills before auditioning at Genome.)
“It’s important to realize that this is a problem of collective action,” Chopra says. “Individual employers changing their hiring practices one at a time won’t work—or won’t work quickly enough. A critical mass of employers needs to shift behavior, signaling to the rest and influencing a change in the way the market operates today.”
To be clear, no one who is advocating for a skills-centered system is suggesting that learning isn’t essential. In fact, the idea is that ever more of us must engage in lifelong learning as automation and other technological advances render our skills obsolete. Having only a high school diploma is not sufficient to land and hold a job anymore.
The goal, then, is to make all kinds of courses readily available in physical classrooms and virtual settings alike, allowing folks to acquire know-how that’s useful in the real world and then demonstrate their prowess to employers.
Under this scenario, it is envisioned, many will still obtain four-year degrees. Many others will earn two-year degrees or technical certificates. Meanwhile, the continued emergence of even more affordable options—such as online badging regimes, which can signal when someone has completed an area of study and mastered a discrete skill—will enhance the job prospects of those currently being left behind.
A False Choice
“Making it skills versus credentials is a bit of a false choice,” says Beth Cobert, CEO of Skillful, an initiative of the Markle Foundation that, in partnership with Microsoft, is aiming to give educators a sharper picture of which skills are in demand in their region while helping businesses adopt skills-based hiring and training practices. “This is about changing mind-sets.”
The difficulty in doing so is that the vast majority of businesses and individuals are largely locked in their old ways.
Despite employers’ constant gripes that they can’t find enough qualified workers in a host of industries, many are screening out those who lack a bachelor’s degree—even though they could tackle the tasks at hand without one. “An increasing number of job seekers face being shut out of middle-skill, middle-class occupations” because of this phenomenon, Burning Glass Technologies, a provider of labor market analytics, warned this month. “This credential inflation . . . is affecting a wide range of jobs from executive assistants to construction supervisors.”
For many families—and the battery of institutions of higher education eager to win them over—there’s also little interest in reconceiving how to best prepare their kids for what lies ahead. “People still build their identity around being a four-year college graduate,” says MissionU’s Adams. “That has a pretty strong stranglehold on society,” even amid deep concern about swelling student loan debt.
Martinez felt that tug himself. His stepdad didn’t approve of him skipping college. And his mom, who is from the Dominican Republic, also had misgivings at first. “As an immigrant mother, she always expected me to have a degree,” he says.
Another issue is how hard it can be to exhibit one’s skills outside of tech. If a company is looking for a Python developer with a certain level of experience and competence, “it doesn’t matter whether you come from high school or come from a PhD” program, says Spencer Thompson, the founder of Sokanu, a career-matching platform. “If you can prove those things, that’s great.” But suppose someone wants to be a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technician?
“How do you measure whether a person is a good HVAC installer?” Thompson asks. “What are the . . . atomic units of being an installer, and how do you actually measure whether somebody is good or bad at those things? That’s where the whole model just completely breaks down.”
The Skills Embedded In The Study Of Literature
Even tougher to see, perhaps, is how the liberal arts can fit in. But Cobert proposes that—beyond having considerable value in their own right—such subjects might be radically reconsidered to capture what employers find most meaningful. “When you take Victorian literature,” she says, “we do not break it down to show that you learned writing skills, you learned critical thinking, you learned how to respond to feedback.”
Others also are hopeful that new avenues for highlighting skills are starting to open up, not necessarily as a replacement for formal education but as a companion to it.
“I don’t think it’s about tech at all,” says Connie Yowell, the CEO of Collective Shift, a nonprofit whose platform, LRNG, teaches tangible skills to young people, gives digitals badges (sometimes called “microcredentials”) to track their achievements, and uses these markers to unlock academic credit, internships, and jobs. “This is the future of learning.”
Adams, of MissionU, is somewhere in between. He believes that tech is a sweet spot. That’s why the first two cohorts completing his program—about 50 people in all—are concentrating on learning data analytics and amassing a portfolio of work to share with potential employers.
Yet MissionU, unlike many tech boot camps, also teaches general business skills, in part through a self-paced project in which students research a topic and present the findings in Excel. This can offer concrete “evidence that you can solve problems” inside a company, Adams says—and, sure enough, employers have begun to regard this assignment as a good indicator of fundamental business proficiency. Because of it, Adams foresees some MissionU graduates finding their way into human resources and other functions, not just being data geeks.
As for Martinez, he has done well for himself. After leaving Genome, he went to work at Yashi, a video advertising company. Once again, he found a boss who admired his skills and didn’t care about his schooling. “It’s not about the path you’ve taken, but what you bring to the table,” says Dipak Shetty, who hired Martinez.
Recently, Martinez moved from New York to Austin, Texas, where he’s mulling what to do next. He may take another job in software. Or he may attempt to shift into a broader management role. For that, though, he acknowledges that he will be forced to finally get a university education, maybe even an MBA.
“If I were to pursue a business job,” he says, “I definitely need a degree to compete.”
After all, skills are everything. But for all too many employers, credentials remain the only thing.
