Top Members of Far-Right Swedish Party With Neo-Nazi Roots Meet Israeli Minister in Knesset
David Stavrou, Jonathan Lis and Noa Shpigel Jan 29, 2024
A delegation of senior members from the far-right party in Sweden, the Swedish Democrats, arrived in Israel on an unofficial visit and met on Monday with Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chickli in the Knesset.
The party, currently the second-largest in the Swedish parliament, has roots in neo-Nazi and antisemitic ideologies. It is one of several European parties with which Israel has refrained from establishing official ties.
The delegation has visited Yad Vashem, one of the crossings connecting Israel to the West Bank, and the Old City in Jerusalem.
Officials in Sweden following the party suggest that the visit is part of its attempt to whitewash its antisemitic and racist positions by presenting itself as a friend of Israel.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the party leader, Jimmie Akesson, wrote: “It is clear that our parties and our nations share common values,” accompanied by a photo of himself with Minister Chikli.
Party members told Haaretz that they met with several ministers during their visit but refused to disclose their names.
Tumblr media
Israel has so far refrained from engaging with the Swedish Democrats not only due to their neo-Nazi roots but also because members of the party have disseminated conspiracy theories and expressed racist, antisemitic, and Islamophobic sentiments in recent years.
Israel’s Ambassador to Stockholm, Ziv Nevo Kulman, even declared that Israel does not maintain and will not establish future relations with the party. The Israeli foreign ministry, which was not involved in coordinating the visit, clarified on Monday that “there is no change in policy towards the party.”
Among the delegation members who visited the Knesset were party leader Akesson, the chairman of the Swedish parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Aron Emilsson, the head of the party’s parliamentary group, Linda Lindberg, and the head of the party’s group in the European Parliament, Charlie Weimers.
Weimers is one of the party’s top members who already visited Israel in May of last year. During the previous visit, it was reported that party leaders met with Knesset member Amit Halevi from Likud and former Knesset member Michael Kleiner, who now serves as the president of the Likud’s court.
Though part of the Swedish political establishment today, the Sweden Democrats do indeed have roots in Nazism. Some of the party’s founders were known Nazis, such as its first auditor, Gustaf Ekström, who was a Waffen-SS veteran.
The party’s first spokesperson Leif Ericsson and its first chairman Anders Klarström were both active in various neo-Nazi and extremist right-wing parties, and the chairman of the party’s youth organization, Robert Vesterlund, was also a known neo-Nazi. During the 80’s and 90’s, the party was a marginal force in Swedish politics, and it began distancing itself from extremism and aligning itself closer to mainstream politics in the mid 90’s.
The party entered the Swedish parliament for the first time in 2010, and in the elections held a year and a half ago, it received over 20% of the votes. Until a few years ago, the party was ostracized by parties across the political spectrum in Sweden and was not considered for inclusion in any coalition.
However, due to a change in approach by two traditional right-wing parties, the Swedish Democrats became an integral part of the right-wing bloc after the elections, with the government in Stockholm entirely dependent on their support. Party members wield significant influence over the government’s policies and hold key positions in parliamentary committees, including foreign affairs, justice, and industry and trade.
In recent months, the party has been attempting to position itself as “the most pro-Israel party in Sweden” and distance itself from its antiemetic and neo-Nazi past. However, in 2021, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet revealed that the party leader in the second-largest city council in Sweden, Gothenburg, Jörgen Fogelklou, had posted antisemitic and racist statements on social media, such as “It is clear that the Jews are the root of all evil in the world.”
Two years ago, it was exposed that some party members had connections with neo-Nazi movements even in recent years. For instance, one party member in southern Sweden, Jonas Lingren, publicly supported rock bands advocating for “white supremacy” and used the slogan “Skinhead 88” (88 is a known code for Heil Hitler, i.e., HH).

For the tenth year in a row, Comicpalooza returned to Houston, Texas this May 25th through May 27th 2018. The guest list was filled to the brim with A-listers from every genre. There was plenty of programming at Comicpalooza 2018 that kept guests wanting more the entire weekend. Temple of Geek was there on Saturday and we have a lot to cover. So let’s get started!
The Venue
Comicpalooza was held at the Geroge R. Brown Convention Center. If you never been to that center, all we can tellyou is that it is HUGE! Three stories tall with 1.2 million usable square feet, George R. Brown ranks among the 10 largest convention centers in the nation. Comicpalooza used a huge majority of the space. There was a heavy emphasis on security, which we appreciated. Bag checks were located at every possible entry point to the show. Once you got past bag check, you entered the center and approched registration. There is on thing that needs to be emphasized, their were thousands of people at the convention and the lines looked long. But because the convention was so well organized, the lines moved very quickly and people were on their way to enjoy what they came there for.

Outside view from balcony

The main show was located on the first floor. The main showroom had hundreds of vendors, artists, and activities spread across the entire area. At one far end there was Maker’s Space which had activities such as sword fighting, a Lego world, Battlebots, NASA, and more. The other end is where they had the celebrity guests and the photo ops.
With this center being so huge and only one Temple of Geek member being in attendance, it was impossible to cover every bit of the available convention space. With this convention being spread out so far and all the available space was being used, never once did the convention feel overcrowded. This is something that is really appreciated.
The Guest List
What is a convention without guests? Comicpalooza did not have a shortage of celebrity guests, including headliners Charlie Cox (Netflix’s Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Netflix’s Jessica Jones), and some up and coming actor, what’s his name? Oh, Tom Holland (Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War).
Other guests included John Cusack (Say Anything, Hot Tub Time Machine), Michael Chicklis (The Shield, Fantastic Four) Dante Brasco (Hook), Walton Goggins (The Shield), Tricia Hefler (Battle Star Galactica), Levar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Orlando Jones (American Gods).
You think that was all the guests? Hahaha! Nope, there is more! Also appearing was James Marsters (Smallville) Nestor Carbonell (The Tick), Michael Emerson (Arrow), Henry Ian Cusick (Lost), Fracois Chau (The Tick), M.C. Gainey (Lost), Ray Parks (Star Wars: Episode I), Peter Mayhew (Star Wars: A New Hope), Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead), and Jimmie Walker (Good Times). Ponch and John themselves, Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox (CHIPS), were present. Finally, David Faustino (Married with Children) and Ming Chen (Comic Book Men) rounds out this impressive guest list.
The Panels
What better way to get to know the celebrity guests then to attend one of their panels. Temple of Geek only attended two of the many celebrity panels that were happening on Saturday. We made sure to attend Krysten Ritter’s and Tom Holland’s Q&A panels. Some of the fun tidbits we heard while in attendance was Krysten Ritter is going to be working on season three of Jessica Jones and Tom Holland didn’t know he was cast as Spider-man until he learned about it on the internet! One thing to note, this new kid, Tom Holland, draws a crowd. 😉
The panels were more then just celebrities, there were also several panels hosted by engineers from NASA, writers, Cosplayers, and more. One example was a panel hosted by the amazing Mariana Lowrey discussing how to apply cosplay make-up.
The Cosplay
A large variety of cosplayers showed up to Comicpalooza donning their best! Many Spider-men, Jessica Jones, and various other comic characters were present. Star Wars was in full force thanks in part to the 501st Legion that was in attendance. To see the full range of cosplayers and fandoms represented at the con, you can check out our cosplay gallery.

The Con Floor
If you have children and you feel that the convention scene is not for you, you may want to reconsider and attend Comicpalooza. There were all sorts of activities for families ranging from NASA exhibits to battlebots! There was even a section that was dedicated to the world of building blocks. Props and displays can be seen all over. There were props that were brought in by the 501st Legion an more.
If you are a collector of art, there was plenty of it on the con floor. Artists ranging from comic creators to independents could be found all over. One artist in particular, Ms. Kealy Racca from Austin, TX, was there and interviewed with Temple of Geek. Look for that interview in this week’s episode of the Temple of Geek Podcast.
The Overall
Comicpalooza is definatley one of the best cons in Texas, period. There was nothing that I could find wrong with the way this convention was ran. Everyone from the Con management to the volunteers were completely professional and knew what was going on. The guests were entertaining and, more importantly, genuinely excited to be there. Next year, we are making plans to attend this convention for the entire weekend to partake in all Comicpalooza has to offer.
The dates for 2019 have not been announced, but you can found out all you need to know about the con, the guests, and more by heading to their site. If you decide to only attend one convention next year, please consider Comicpalooza. You will not be disappointed.
Did you attend this convention? What did you think of it? Let us know in the comments below!
CON COVERAGE: #Comicpalooza 2018 #CompicpaloozaX #comicpalooza2018 For the tenth year in a row, Comicpalooza returned to Houston, Texas this May 25th through May 27th 2018.

Man's security camera prank on unsuspecting friend escalates spectacularly
Tumblr media
Turns out if you combine a security camera, some remote control lights, an Amazon Echo and an unsuspecting friend it can make for a pretty fun Twitter thread.
SEE ALSO: This British man's email exchange with a scammer escalated hilariously
On Wednesday, writer Nick Kocher took to Twitter to share the epic tale of a sequence of pranks he played on his buddy Jon Bass, who was crashing at his apartment while he was out of town for the weekend.
Here's the full thread, in all its glory:
Here’s a story. So about a month ago, my coat was stolen. This was not fun....
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
It became even less fun when I remembered what I’d left in the, now stolen, coat.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
In one pocket was an envelope addressed to my apartment. In the other pocket, were THE KEYS TO THAT APARTMENT.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
So this thief now knows where I live, and can EASILY let himself in and murder my face off.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
In a fit of paranoia, I install a @Nest security camera. (Shoutout to @nest. Pay me something)
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Weeks go by, no break-ins, no murdering of me, nothing.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
The only thing that happens is now EVERY time I walk through my kitchen, the @nest camera texts me an awkward, unflattering video of myself and asks “Do you recognize this person?” Honestly, @nest security cam? I wish I didn’t. pic.twitter.com/IUftaJeWM7
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Then....one weekend I leave town and let my friend @thejonbass crash at my place.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Jon does not know about the security camera.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Fun ensues.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Day 1: Jon goes about his normal business. What is Jon’s normal business? Apparently, chugging juice and listening to showtunes. pic.twitter.com/U0C3vvVog0
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Now listen. Am I a bad person for watching this without telling him? Legally speaking....yes.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
So day 2, I decide to let Jon know I can see him.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
One fun feature of this camera, is you can watch your friend silently text on his phone for 20 minutes and then suddenly project your voice into the room. pic.twitter.com/SMwK50b1lf
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Jon and I have a nice little chat for a bit. pic.twitter.com/bFOsT7bdbN
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Then at one point, he says this... pic.twitter.com/3lUQxfvWLr
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
So Jon thinks I can only see him when the blue light is on. He is wrong. The camera only lights up when you speak through it. So now he thinks I’m not watching. I absolutely am. pic.twitter.com/boYnQWvIq4
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Hours later, I remember another fun fact about my apartment. I can remotely control my @WeMo lights from my phone. (Shoutout to @WeMo. Pay me something) pic.twitter.com/wToCxTvVJV
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Sidenote: Wondering why Jon was calling me “Mike”? When we first met, he called me “Nick”. But as time passed, “Nick” became “Nicholas” which became “Nicklis” which became “Chicklis” which became “Michael Chiklis” which became “Michael” which became “Mike”. Confused? So am I.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Anyhow, for the rest of the day, whenever I think to do so, I make the lights in the apartment go crazy. I do this A LOT. Here’s a video from Jon’s perspective. pic.twitter.com/hija1o9L9Y
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Jon eventually gets fed up with me. So he does this. pic.twitter.com/PNzI1ghtSI
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
(Careful listeners may have heard Jon fart again at the 9 second mark)
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
To retaliate for blocking my view, that night at 4:27am.... I remotely turn all the lights on and speak through the security camera with a very specific request. (You’re gonna definitely want SOUND ON) pic.twitter.com/tRP3xbmzjm
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
(Shoutout to @amazonecho. Pay me something)
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
The next day, Jon decided to crash with someone else. The end. Epilogue: I love @thejonbass more than oxygen and I do not deserve him as a friend.
— Nick Kocher (@NickKocher) December 13, 2017
Glorious.
And the good news is Jon clearly had a sense of humour about the whole thing too.
looking for a good read today, here’s a story about me and my friend. edit: ex-friend. https://t.co/KpY6DkLGaN

Created by Shawn Ryan. With Michael Chiklis, Catherine Dent, Walton Goggins, Michael Jace. The story of an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct where some of the cops aren't above breaking the rules or working against their associates to both keep the streets safe and their self-interests intact.
The Shield was a brilliant show on FX that ran for 7 seasons. The show takes a look at an LAPD department with questionable policing methods, headed by the hot-headed and morally ambiguous Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis. Mackey is a character to be forever embedded in TV history. You watch his decision-making process and tactics with both awe and digust. Much like Walter White, Don Draper, and Tony Soprano, Vic Mackey is a man who you want to hate but can’t help loving. I highly recommend this show. I breezed through it because the plots are so engrossing. The characters develop in intriguing ways. The show also has a nice balance of comedy and tragedy. We see both “corrupt” and “non-corrupt” detectives make difficult decisions, and watch how it effects their personal and professional lives. And most important to me, the show concludes in the perfect fashion. If you’re looking for a smart, entertaining, thought-provoking show about corrupt detectives, this is THE ONE. And to add icing to the cake, it’s based off a real-life corrupt department of the LAPD in the 90s. Good stuff. A+ show. A+ storytelling.
