I love The Shield because it's basically reverse Copaganda

It just straight up makes every single police officer look absolutely fucked, even in comparison to the transcendently corrupt and monstrous Strike Team.

Even the Internal Affairs officer that spends an entire season trying to take Vic Mackey down resorts to straight up witness intimidation because - as a cop - he has no actual morals, only a very specific sense of grievance with violated procedure.

It spends seven whole seasons saying "no, it's not just Vic and the Strike Team that are shitty, it's every single cop knowing they're shitty, letting it happen and being shitty in their own ways"

At times, Michael Chiklis' as Vic Mackey is stiff, tacky, over-the-top. But other times, it's...haunting. When he confesses to his crimes, there's a solid one-minute long period of silence where his face clearly communicates the full spectrum of emotions that he is going through: suspicion, disbelief, self-righteousness, to name a few.

But never, ever guilt. It's ultimately smug and deathly serious and one of the best performances of all time.

And by the end of his confession, she's disgusted. We're all disgusted. No matter how many times you may have rooted for Mackey during the show, it's impossible to reconcile those moments of righteousness with the weight of his sins. The ends cannot ever justify these means.

The ending of this show is so fucking heavy. The characters...you can't help but pity them. Each and every person that Vic Mackey comes into contact with is poisoned, corroded by his aura of toxicity and filth.

Goddamn.

So going through Hulu and saw The Shield and I decided to rewatch the pilot which I hadn’t seen since it first aired.

I forgot how amazing this show was and how good Michael Chiklis was in this. Vic Mackey really is one of the most complex and compelling characters ever!!!

Shout out to the amazing cast CCH Pounder, Benito Martinez, Catherine Dent, Walter Goggins, and Kenny Johnson.

Special shout out to Jay Karnes…Dutch was also compelling (and a jerk that you’re not supposed to like) and the episode he strangled the cat to see what it felt like to take a life is still one of the most disturbing scene.
