What’s On Michael Portillo’s iPod: Reformat
Here at Birthday Cake For Breakfast, we like to get to the heart of what an artist is all about. We feel that what influences them is just as important as the music they make. With that in mind, off the back of releasing their new album ‘Precursed‘, Luke Pajak of Reformat talks us through a number of influences. Healing through Storytelling

Storytelling has been a fundamental part of human experience for thousands of years. From ancient myths passed down through generations to modern novels and films, stories have shaped our understanding of the world and ourselves. However, storytelling is more than just a way to entertain or pass on knowledge--it can also be a profound tool for healing. By sharing our stories, we can confront and process our emotions, connect with others, and ultimately find a path to recovery and growth. In this blog post, we'll explore the ways in which storytelling can be a powerful force for healing.
The Therapeutic Power of Storytelling
Storytelling has a unique ability to tap into our emotions and bring about psychological healing. When we tell our stories, we give voice to our experiences, which can help us make sense of them. Many of us walk around in a fog of past events that we never fully understood or processed. When we tell our stories, we create an ordered pattern out of past events, and thereby construct meaning. We form a clearer understanding of who we are and how we got to where we are. This process is particularly powerful in dealing with trauma. Trauma can often leave individuals feeling isolated, misunderstood, and overwhelmed by emotions that seem too complex to articulate. By telling their stories, individuals can begin to organize their thoughts, express their emotions, and gain a sense of control over their experiences.
One form of storytelling that has gained recognition for its therapeutic benefits is narrative therapy. Developed in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, narrative therapy encourages individuals to tell their stories in a way that separates their identity from their problems. This allows them to reframe their experiences, recognize their strengths, and see themselves as empowered agents in their own lives rather than victims of circumstances.
In addition to narrative therapy, journaling is another powerful form of storytelling that can facilitate healing. Writing about our experiences, especially traumatic ones, can help us process emotions and gain insight into our thoughts and feelings. Studies have shown that expressive writing can lead to reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression, and can even have physical health benefits, such as improved immune function.
Building Connections Through Shared Stories
Storytelling not only helps us heal individually, but it can also foster connection and support among people. When we share our stories with others, we open ourselves up to empathy and understanding. Our stories allow us to be known and seen, understood and appreciated. This can be particularly important for those who feel isolated by their experiences. For example, support groups often rely on storytelling as a means of building community among individuals facing similar challenges. By hearing others' stories, individuals may realize that they are not alone in their struggles, which can provide comfort and reduce feelings of isolation.
Moreover, storytelling in groups can create a sense of solidarity and shared purpose. This is evident in many cultural traditions where communal storytelling is used to pass down wisdom, strengthen bonds, and maintain a sense of identity. For example, Indigenous communities often use storytelling as a way to preserve their history, values, and traditions, which helps maintain a strong sense of community and continuity.
In the digital age, online platforms and social media have expanded the reach of storytelling, allowing people to connect with others across the globe. Blogs, podcasts, and online forums provide spaces where individuals can share their stories and find support from a wider audience. This global exchange of stories has the potential to break down barriers, increase understanding, and build empathy among people from diverse backgrounds.
Storytelling as a Tool for Advocacy and Social Change
Beyond personal healing, storytelling can also be a powerful tool for advocacy and social change. By sharing their stories, individuals can raise awareness about important issues, challenge stereotypes, and inspire others to take action. This is particularly important for marginalized communities whose voices have historically been silenced or ignored.
One powerful example of storytelling as advocacy is the #MeToo movement, where survivors of sexual harassment and assault shared their stories, sparking a global conversation about gender-based violence. The collective power of these stories not only brought attention to a pervasive issue but also led to concrete changes, such as policy reforms and increased accountability for perpetrators.
Similarly, storytelling has been a key element in the civil rights movement, LGBTQ+ rights activism, and other social justice movements. By bringing personal experiences to the forefront, these stories humanize the issues at hand and create a sense of urgency for change.
Storytelling in the Healing Professions
Recognizing the healing power of storytelling, many professionals in the fields of healthcare, psychology, and social work are incorporating storytelling into their practices. For instance, narrative medicine is an approach that encourages healthcare providers to listen to their patients' stories as a way to better understand their experiences and provide more empathetic care. This approach acknowledges that patients are not just a collection of symptoms but individuals with unique stories that shape their health and well-being.
Similarly, in social work and counseling, practitioners often use storytelling to help clients explore their identities, build resilience, and find meaning in their experiences. By encouraging clients to tell their stories, practitioners can help them process their emotions, identify patterns in their behavior, and develop strategies for coping and growth.
Conclusion: Embracing the Healing Journey Through Storytelling
Storytelling is a deeply human practice that has the power to heal, connect, and transform. Whether through narrative therapy, journaling, group sharing, or advocacy, storytelling allows us to make sense of our experiences, connect with others, and find a path forward. In a world where many feel isolated and disconnected, storytelling reminds us of our shared humanity and the potential for growth and healing that lies within each of us. By embracing the power of storytelling, we can not only heal ourselves but also contribute to the healing of our communities and the broader society. What's your story?

Star Trek: The Next Generation, 115 (Feb. 6, 1988) - “Too Short a Season”
Teleplay by: Michael Michaelian & D.C. Fontanta Story by: Michael Michaelian Directed by: Rob Bowman
The Breakdown
A Federation ambassador and their team have been taken hostage on Persephone V by alleged terrorists who refuse to talk to their planetary leader, Karnas. So who WILL they talk to? None other than the legendary Admiral Mark Jameson, who successfully negotiated a hostage situation on Persephone V, some 45 years ago. Though his aging body has been ravaged by an incurable degenerative illness (confining him to a wheel chair), his mind is still sharp, and therefore has been given command of the mission with the aid of Picard and the Enterprise. However, as the Enterprise makes its way to Persephone, our boy Mark begins to regain his strength and virility! This on its own should be impossible, but when the Admiral starts to rapidly grow younger it raises more than a few eyebrows. We discover that Jameson has been taking an alien de-aging treatment, which is extremely risky for most species. With his new mission, Jameson apparently felt that he would take two full doses of the treatment all at once (instead of one dose slowly over years), so that he could be in his physical prime and ready for action.
So why the urgent need for his restored youth? Well, it turns out that Jameson may not have used the most ethical of tactics in that hostage situation all those years ago. You see, back in the day Karnas’ house was just one of several families fighting for planetary dominance, and he was also the dude holding the hostages that Jameson originally “negotiated to freedom.” Karnas had demanded an exchange of weapons for the lives of his hostages, so that he could gain the upper hand in his fight for political dominance. Giving weapons to aid a non-federation civil war is strictly prohibited by the prime-directive, but seeing no other way out, Jameson opted for super neat loophole; He gave Karnas his weapons, and then once the hostages were safe, also provided all of Karnas’ enemies the same weapons, resulting in a 40 year war that killed millions (which TECHNICALLY doesn’t violate the prime directive, I guess). Jameson then lied about all this in his report, and the federation evidently never bothered to corroborate any of it (which doesn’t speak to larger cover-up at all).
Not being the forgiving sort, Karnas has now taken the present-day federation delegates hostage in exchange for Jameson’s life (the alleged terrorists never existed). In the mean time, that treatment that's restored Jameson’s youth has gone too far, as his health rapidly declines from his organs imploding. Realizing this is the end of the line, Jameson gives himself over to Karnas who ultimately satisfies himself with watching Jameson die painfully in front of him. Since he did technically get what he wanted, Karnas agrees to honour his terms, and allows the hostages to go free.
The moral of the story: If an a guest Admiral boards your ship to command an away mission, prepare yourself for some morally dubious goings-on.
The Verdict
My biggest criticism is how little starfleet seems to hold their commanding officers accountable. Even accepting that Karnas kept Jameson’s secret, I find it hard to believe that between all the other warring factions, that word wouldn’t have gotten back to Starfleet command/the Federation about their inadvertent sponsorship of a planetary war. I also think that realistically Picard should have just contacted Starfleet as soon as their assigned Admiral started de-aging 50 years immediately before heading up a vital mission. The same could be said for Jameson’s sudden decision to switch from negotiations to a surprise offensive (which fails miserably), but then I guess that would make for a short episode. Needless to say, Picard is going to have one hell of a report to submit.
All that aside, I otherwise quite enjoyed this episode. The story nicely sets up the reveal of Jameson’s past misdeeds, showing us that our heroes are often not what we imagine them to be. Jameson’s actions initially feel irrational and contrived, until we understand he’s just a desperate man running from his past out of guilt and shame. It makes for a mostly-relevant observation of the way our own political and military leadership alter history to the benefit their legacy, while avoiding accountability for their actions. Very Shakespearean stuff.
3 stars (out of 5)
Additional Observations
Power Corrupts Starfleet Admirals: This is the first corrupt 24th century Admiral that we’ll run into, but it’s a trope that I believe goes all the way back to the TOS era. It makes sense given that Starfleet apparently has no follow-up process with commanding officers after major missions.
Jameson armed multiple hostile factions in a global dispute, ostensibly without Starfleet’s knowledge or approval; which leads me to wonder where he procured the weapons that he gave away? Am I to believe that he used his ship’s replicators to provide enough artillery to fuel a world war? Wouldn’t that raise a few eyebrows amongst his crew, some of whom must have had their reservations over such a questionable bargain? As much as I enjoy Star Trek, there are some mental gymnastics one must perform in order to ignore the otherwise-fairly-obvious signs of widespread corruption within Starfleet’s upper echelons.
Although Picard and Crusher are probably the most featured main-cast members of the episode, the story is predominantly driven by Mark Jameson. Unlike future evil-admirals who will function as proper villains, this episode comes closer to framing Jameson as the protagonist, making him more of an anti-hero.

The Great Alone - Kristin Hannah
Historical fiction - Domestic abuse - Romance
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
Historical fiction will always have a special place in my heart even though i've been shattered to pieces on multiple occasions after reading books in said genre. This is a book about love. Love that hurts, love that builds, love that blinds, and love that kills. It is a very heavy book and i would recommend anyone who is sensitive to topics of domestic abuse to go through trigger warnings before starting it. I can still feel the heaviness of it all in my heart, and that's how i know it will hold its place inside my mind forever.

Cover design: Michael Storrings
The book is about a family of three, Leni a 13 year old girl, and her parents Cora and Ernt who upend their lives in Seattle (1974) to move to the state of Alaska for a fresh start. It's about people that find themselves in a place where "wild" takes on a deeper meaning finding its way to every crevice in their lives. A family that breaks and rebuilds with the whims of a man left broken from the war. It's a story about so many kinds of love that can hurt and grow at the same time.
Hannah was able to paint the events of the books in a way that felt very intimate to the reader. I felt like i was standing there next to the characters fighting the urge to reach out and help in situations that tore me apart. The characters were so well developed and felt very real to me which made everything that happens much more painful to witness.
It's a book about life, and how beautiful and ugly it can be, and how unfair it is to be born in a situation so out of your control that affects each and every step you take.
One of my favorite things about this book is the setting, middle of nowhere Alaska surrounded by the wild beauty of the northern (semi)wild. And i think it was the perfect place to reflect everything the book stands for.
My only issue was that the book was sometimes very slow paced, though i understood the need for those sections later on. But other than that, I would definitely recommend it to the world. Just make sure that you do not need your mood to be stable for the period of reading the book because it took over me completely that i found it hard to function well enough to get back to my work😅.

LE056 Michael Vincent Waller A Song
Michael Vincent Waller (b. 1985) is an American composer of contemporary music based in New York City. His music has been described as lyrical and introspective, drawing inspiration from impressionism, post-minimalism and world music. His work situates these familiar elements within decidedly unconventional and individual frameworks. He has been recently described as “a rising star composer…” and his recent album Moments on Unseen Worlds was named “one of the last year’s best contemporary classical releases” by Brooklyn Rail.
Inside out An essay by Nick Storring
Hearing the improvisations of someone who primarily identifies as a composer is imbued with a very particular kind of intimacy, akin to reading the letters or diaries of poet, or discovering that one’s favourite painter was also an equally accomplished photographer, yet hadn’t shared this side of their work publicly. There’s a familiarity in the contours, syntax and cadence of their phrases. The hues are equally saturated or muted. The glue that holds it all together even has the same viscosity, but it’s as if everything has been turned inside out.
And on a certain level it has.
For composers, such as Michael Vincent Waller, who don't regularly give improvised concerts, it’s a private, quotidian, yet utterly vital counterpart to their public-facing creative endeavour. It’s an activity that feeds into gestation of compositions, without being subservient to it. It’s not as though its sole purpose is to generate content that could later find a more refined form on the page. Rather, it exists as a reciprocal realm to composing in which one's aesthetic concerns are addressed in a more casual, instinctual, fluid and vulnerable discourse.
Fortunately for listeners, Waller has recognised the beauty of turning this process outward. –––– Prior to the 20th century there wasn’t always such a sharp distinction between these two paradigms of creative music-making. It’s no secret that countless canonised composers from Bach to Liszt were revered improvising virtuosi on their instruments. Historically, spontaneously-generated cadenzas were commonplace—offering the performer compositional agency, and the permeability to various forms of impromptu embellishment during the Baroque is widely noted.
Yet as artists’ creative processes started to interrogate the presumed fundamentals of music itself, idealistic and ideological stances on the matter of composition vs. improvisation took hold. John Cage was notable for his qualms with the latter on account it asserting the subjectivity of its creators. At the opposite end of the spectrum, some would go as far as touting improvisation as the ultimate musical manifestation of a liberated, egalitarian utopia (in contrast to the rigid hegemonic structure apparently posed by written-out music).
While this division lingers in certain corners of the vast and varied exploratory music community, the perspectives and practices of present-day artists tend to be more supple. There tends to be an increased awareness of the conditions that destabilise the purported solidity of composition, and also a corresponding understanding that improvisation is unconsciously composed by one’s training, musical habits, body, listening diet, performance context and relationship to the instrument. –––– The body of work that Waller has generated thus far does not make a deliberate attempt to engage with these notions—at least not directly. The music is lyrical, personal and often quite delicate, embracing traditional shapes as much as it does contemporary restraint and coloration. His approach is staunchly intuitive, grounded in the very sensation of making music itself, rather attempting to narrate or illustrate some sort of commentary through sound. It’s very decidedly music that comes from listening, and gently insists that those interpreting it or witnessing it engage in listening of the same intensity.
The music heard here—an extended piano improvisation—remains true to his ethos, but the contrast in method it offers from Waller's other work speaks to his position within the above question, and does so with candour and eloquence.
At first blush, A Song might not even read as an improvisation at all. Driven neither by fiery virtuosic urgency nor exploratory meandering, it unfolds in a careful, stately manner, thoroughly reflecting upon—savouring—each moment, before moving forward. The sustained, transparent-sounding arpeggiations, presented in a strong, steady, but never forceful dynamic, evoke the tolling of bells. Elsewhere he will hovers quietly within a simple chordal texture, or, such as in the closing two minutes, unfurl a robust melodic statement over a sturdy bass progression.
Waller’s real-time sense of proportion is remarkably acute. The piece’s shifts of texture, such as the brief movement into surging repeated chords at roughly eleven minutes in, though surprising, come off with a lucidity one associates with composition more than freeform extemporisation.
Though commendably clean in its construction, this piece still speaks to the fluidity and magic of improvisation—the fact that it as a medium can serve as a mysterious agent of cohesion. The intricate but informal way in which the entire structure is articulated, keeps the listener engaged with the piece in way that feels constantly fresh and somewhat unpredictable.
As such, it also draws the ear toward attributes that are idiomatic improvisation. We’re privy to the unique fluctuations of Waller's own internal clock which impart an idiosyncratic sense of breath one could never coax from an interpreter. Additionally, on a number of occasions throughout the 21 minutes, Waller touches upon material whose character is enhanced by the sincerity of the spontaneous flow, but might not end up translating in a written-out-for-someone-else context. There’s an irrefutable momentum behind the authenticity of the gesture.
To that, this recording gives listeners deep glimpse into Waller's impulses as a musician. Certainly A Song is full of ideas that one could imagine nestled in a more settled framework, but here they’re charged—directly and palpably so—with Waller's own internal curiosity. The energy that accompanies the arrival of each musical statement is the foundation and what make it so evocative.
Waller's scores already emerge from an intuitive and inward-oriented position, and in addition to playing freely, he's long used improvisation as a tool to generate, develop, manipulate his material. Admitting listeners into that once-private domain seems like natural and logical extension of his existing approach and the resultant music confirms this impression, too.
It channels his imagination with the same focus and fidelity, while allowing it to speak with newfound vitality.
Artist notes: Deep listening can be understood as a state of mind, that facilitates a deeper awareness of sound, as with one's experiential involvement with musical listening.
I think this awareness of listening (inside) the sound, can build deeply complex relationships. There is an objectivism in how we perceive musical structures, in the harmonies; but, yet in subtle fermatas, we can perceive a new sense of space—wherein choices have a subtle gravity and inward gaze.

Onsdag 7 februari 2024
Dagbokens namn: Working Days. ”My will is low. I must build my will again. And I can do it.”
In writing, habit seems to be a much stronger force than either willpower or inspiration.
Skippat allt vad Design Week heter.

crunch reading just to be back on track
Good afternoon!
Yes, I know. This is a lot later than my usual blogging time. You could say things had gotten busier around here since I woke up this morning. It's 3:46 PM here as I'm writing here. But I did read for today. I think that's a good thing. I tried to read as much as I can while doing things around here.
As for my reading update from yesterday, I got to finish reading several books! What do you know? Then again, three of them were just the shortest books from my old currently reading list that were added since the early 2024, to be honest. You could say I'm in a hurry to be on track with my Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year. And what better for me to do that?
Read short books. But three out of the four books I've finished reading yesterday were self-help books. And one of them has something to do with writing. And obviously, since I did crunch reading (as I'd like to call it) yesterday, it was obvious that I surpassed my page count quota yesterday. With this, now I'm thinking of raising the maximum number of pages for me to read to either 80 or 90. Definitely not 100 as it was still too much for my brain.
Let me rate the books I've read yesterday. I mean, I know I did it in Goodreads already. But I also want to do it here.
"The 12 Week Year" by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington - ⭐⭐⭐, but only because it only made my brain like a mush and maybe I just felt pressured in a way as I was reading the whole thing. I mean, the idea was great that you can actually do a lot of things in about 3 months. But maybe I wasn't in the right mindset just yet to implement the process to myself at the moment. For now, I would consider doing the process in the future, especially since I do view myself a failure at my age of 33.
"5,000 Words Per Hour: Write Faster, Write Smarter" by Chris Fox - ⭐⭐⭐, but the idea was definitely something I can do when I'm writing. I actually first heard about this book because of Kate Cavanaugh's video when she tried to write 5,000 words an hour like Chris Fox. But it actually took me a while to finish reading the whole thing. I don't know what made me stop reading this, to be honest. And I know it's other than my reading slump. Should I blame my writing slump/writer's block on that, as well? But yes, I know I can only write around 3,000 words maximum in one day. Why? I tend to write my stories by hand first. It has been a habit since high school and I don't think I've ever outgrown that. But I could still do the practices here in this book in my writing just so I can use that as a reason to discipline my writer self. So the books still helped me in some way.
"Romancing The Beats: Story Structure for Romance Novels" by Gwen Hayes - This one was a definite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me, only because it does provided me more insight than I ever thought I needed when it comes to writing romance stories. I mean, you could say that romance is sort of my forte in writing stories. It was the genre that I started writing back in high school. Yes, I'm thanking Kate Cavanaugh once again for me discovering this book for writers. And I think she outlined her first romance novel with this as a guide. I still haven't started outlining any romance stories with the beats in this book. But I will get to that ㅡ once I managed to get my writing groove back.
The second volume of "By The Grace Of The Gods" is also done, and I've rated it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ in Goodreads. Hmm... Maybe because I wasn't some of the characters to appear here early that I've only seen on the second season of the anime version. Another thing that could've affected the original 5 stars rating was the initial assumption I had that anime version encompassed the first two volumes of the light novel. I was wrong. This volume seemed to be encompassing only 3 episodes since it has something to do with the continuation of the monster subjugation and starting the laundry store. The real problem for me? Information overload on the store building part.
That's a lot for me to even write here, you know. But I thought I should add my comments (even if it's short) on each of the book I would finish reading. Yes, even my own ratings on the books done reading.
It's currently raining hard as I write here, but let's get on with the next part. As for th book I continued reading, I actually read 18 pages of the fifth volume of "The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen" at past midnight, as I've mentioned in my blog entry yesterday. I didn't add more pages done reading on that book after that since I concentrated reading more on the other books. So no comments and ratings just yet.

I really should try raising the maximum number for a bit, but I would definitely not let it reach 100 for my brain's sake. But with all that I've read today, I think I already reached this page count quota today. I'll let you know about the books I read tomorrow.
Just to give you a heads up ㅡ they were mainly novellas. Blame my frustration for constantly seeing the number of books behind schedule in my Goodreads Reading Challenge. So this was my solution to finally beat that.
Yes, I know this entry is already way too late than my usual posting time. But it's only past 5 in the afternoon here in 🇵🇭, so it's still within the day.
Let's see if I can post here during my usual early posting time. See you tomorrow! Happy reading. 😊✌️💕📚📖
