Picture Perfect 87
Picture Perfect 87 Morrison’s farm was a mile or so north of St. Peter’s in a wooded area. The dirt road to the house wound around a pond so that the house was unexpectedly revealed. Dan didn’t think the reveal was accidental. The building was a perfect pyramid with a deck along all four sides. Each face of the pyramid had its own entrance way set inside a triangle that was also perfect. Each…

Geroglifici Micmac: come l'Egitto sbarcò in America
Geroglifici Micmac: come l’Egitto sbarcò in America
Noi ne esamineremo una in particolar modo. In Nord…

“The teenage girl who recorded a cover of Blackbird by The Beatles entirely in Mi'kmaq says she hopes to one day release a full album in her people's language.
"Those lyrics kind of make me feel more hopeful, more inspired to, like, learn my language more than I already know, and to show non-Mi'kmaq people the beauty of the song in our language," Emma Stevens, 16, of Eskasoni, N.S., told As It Happens host Carol Off.
The cover was produced by the school's music teacher Carter Chiasson using translated lyrics from Mi'kmaq language teacher Katani Julian and her father.
There was plenty there to sink her teeth into, she said, noting that lyrics like "Take these broken wings and learn to fly" really resonate with Indigenous experiences in Canada.
"The song is just like the type of gentle advice that we get from our elders when we feel defeated and when we feel down," she said.
While researching the song, she learned that it has frequently been associated with the U.S. civil rights movement.
"We have something in common with the civil rights movement because, to some extent, our people have been oppressed in this country, you know, by the Indian Act and, you know, by the federal government and, you know, the whole residential school thing and attempts at assimilation," Julian said.”

Canadians have an annoying superiority complex over Americans. Things are as bad here (other than the coup), but people avoid talking about it. Search up the wesuweten tribe, the mi' kmaq, joyce echquan, and you'll see.

Researchers at Nova Scotia's Cape Breton University have received a $850,000 grant to develop a traditional Mi'kmaq medicine for potential future commercial production as a skin ointment.
Maskwiomin is made from the oil of birch bark and is used to treat skin conditions such as rashes, eczema and psoriasis.
Matthias Bierenstiel, a chemistry professor at Cape Breton University, said the traditional medicine could be a "powerful" remedy for people who suffer from such conditions.
He said modern medicine and ointments used to treat skin conditions are typically hit or miss, but so far, maskwiomin is proving to be much more effective.

When high school students at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni, N.S., released their stunning cover of the Beatles' classic Blackbird last month, it quickly took off around the world — but little did they know the pop music titan who originally penned the song would soon be singing their praises.
Led by music teacher Carter Chiasson, students recorded the Paul McCartney track in their native Mi'kmaq language, with translation by Chiasson's colleagues Katani Julian and her father Albert "Golydada" Julian.
The song quickly went viral, but in a q interview, 16-year-old singer Emma Stevens said there was one person she most wanted it to reach: "I want Paul McCartney to hear it."
Thousands of people tagged McCartney on social media, but he didn't comment publicly — until now.
"There's an incredible version done by a Canadian girl. You see it on YouTube. It's in her native language," McCartney said in a video from a tour stop in Lexington, Ky. "It's really cool, check it out."

They may be a small minority, but first-language Mi'kmaq speakers are trying to make a big difference at the Alaqsite'w Gitpu School on the Listuguj First Nation.
The school has been offering a Mi'kmaq immersion program for students from kindergarten to Grade 4 since 2002 and is now taking the next step and developing its own curriculum.
Since September, Mary Ann Metallic, 66, has been working with a group of Mi'kmaq speakers in an effort to improve their fluency, along with their reading and writing.
They are using those improved skills to create the new curriculum for students in their native language. (...)
"We're not just translating curriculum from English to Mi'kmaq. We're developing it from our point of view. From the Mi'kmaq world view and it comes from our language."
Vicky and her team have already written 10 children's books that are entirely in Mi'kmaq. They are now being printed and will be shared with students in the fall. The book Vicky created was about jumping frogs.
"What I like is that is that we use a lot of local environments … so when the children read they not only read the language but they also get to see the setting from their own backyards. So it gives them a sense of place and belonging."
