Gore - A Bud That Never Blooms EP
A few months back, I reviewed an EP from the band Gore, and talked about how they sounded a lot like Spiritbox. Their major difference is that they add a shoegaze element that Spiritbox doesn’t have, but I also felt like they weren’t too unique yet. They needed something to really give them the edge to make them stick out, and I said that we’ll see when they drop a debut album, but it looks like they dropped another EP. This time, however, it looks to be its own thing, versus just a single with other songs attached to it. Entitled A Bud That Never Blooms, we got the same four songs we heard on their last EP, but with one new song. I wouldn’t normally talk about another EP from the same band so soon, but this new song is exactly what I wanted from them to help them stick out.
“Heaven Is Above Me” is the name of this new tune, and it’s a beautifully haunting alt-metal song that heavily leans into gospel and soul, complete with a choir towards the end. Vocalist Haley Roughton is absolutely incredible, and she really shows off her range here, but this is the song that made me think there’s something to these guys. Not that their first few tracks didn’t, though, because they have a cool sound, but it didn’t quite go anywhere that a few other bands in this vein haven’t.
If you haven’t listened to this band, I’d check out their first proper release. I guess their last EP wasn’t a proper EP release, and just an extended single, but for their debut release, this is a solid EP, and this new song really adds a lot. I’m really excited for a debut record now, so hopefully we get it in 2025, because if this new song is any indication of what we’ll get, I’m intrigued. I really like the band already, but that new song is really awesome. It’s refreshing to have something more than just generic Octanecore, even though their brand of it is really good. They have a wonderful vocalist, and their sound is a good mix of catchy and heavy, but that new song really adds some dimension to their sound that I would love to hear more of.

Album Review: Winterfylleth – The Imperious Horizon (Candlelight / Spinefarm)
Reflecting a world that is dark and dangerously fractured, The Imperious Horizon finds Winterfylleth in a much bleaker mood. Even if a new release from this iconic black metal band makes everything feel that little brighter.
Four years since the release of their critically acclaimed 7th album, ‘The Reckoning Dawn’, British black metal forerunners Winterfylleth return to the fray with their new album, ‘The Imperious Horizon’ on 13th September via Candlelight/Spinefarm. BARATHRUM "Legions of Perkele" CD 1998 ("In most of processes in the grimoires, Demons are subordinate to the magician, Or can be subordinated. But there is another group of rituals in which the force of evil is master and worshipped. Those connected with the pact with the devil, The witches' sabbat and black mass.")
"Castle stands on the islands of stone It is surrounded by dark waters Centuries on its place For centuries more it shall do the same
It's history so cruel The fort was cursed by eerie doom There's a witch enclosed into the wall No one knows exact place where There's a tree on the wall More than thirty feel tall It is said it's roots Grew from the heart of sorceress Every night she haunts On the corridors of fort Her restless soul Wanders in those huge halls
Autumn long time ago The colossal stone fort Inside that dark walled castle Beautiful young female dwelt
Dark sorceress, daughter of the castle lord Dark sorceress, worshipper of the Ramlord
Dark witch used black magic Gestic magic in the war In was against warriors Wielders of the curved sabres
Dark sorceress, daughter of the castle lord Dark sorceress, worshipper of the Ramlord
Another stormy night during that autumn of fights The enemy broke the gates and came with their sharp blades Sorceress casted the spell to protect the castle She performed her rite against intruders with sabres
Sky turned to dark The sorceress draw the mark Mark of the Ramlord in the air Strongest thunderstorm was created Lightnings everywhere Electricity in the air Lightning casted the shadows Of the Ramlord onto the wall Enemy saw that shape And because of that they escaped The shadow of the Ramlord On the wall of black powered fort (Behold) dark sorceress, daughter of the castle lord (Hark) dark sorceress, worshipper of the Ramlord...!"

Tuesday, June 25: He is Legend, "Air Raid"
He is Legend had been low-key plying their trade over four records on tiny labels before Spinefarm gave them a slightly larger platform for few, and while the band’s approach hadn’t altered significantly, “Air Raid” presented greater clarity of focus thanks to the bigger budget supporting Adam “Nolly” Getgood’s mix.  Schuylar Croom had likewise arguably matured as a vocalist, more seamlessly transitioning between haunting clean humming groans to ornery shrieking, as the music ebbed and flowed.  In many ways the band had been working towards this moment, homing their chops over a series of pleasurable albeit choppy records to show how much more they could accomplish if they were given just a little more to work with.

Gore. - Angels Like You - EP
Hey, do you like Spiritbox? If you answered yes to that, do you want another band that sounds like them? If you answered yes to that, do you want them to do something a little different, such as adding some shoegaze-inspired moments, but also utilizing really strong hooks and breakdowns? if you answered yes to that, let me introduce you to the band Gore, and their debut EP, Angels Like You. Sort like the new Graphic Nature album, Who Are You When You’re Alone, where I don’t have a lot to say about it, although I don’t want to ignore it, either.
These guys are really fascinating, but if anything at all, they have a bit of work to do to really hone their sound. They had a couple singles before signing to Spinefarm earlier this year, but they dropped an EP with those three songs, plus the title track. I really enjoy this EP, even if it doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. Their vocalist is really good, despite sort of doing a Courtney LaPlante impression, but she holds her own. The instrumentation is a cool mix between metalcore, alt-metal, and shoegaze, but it all sounds like stuff you’ve heard before.
The thing is, this EP is good, and it’s exactly that — an EP. It’s so short, only 14 minutes, so it goes by real quick. I do enjoy this quite a bit, even if I don’t go back to it as much as I’d like to, or if it’s nothing unique or special. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, because everything is fine. I have a good time with this, and I’m curious and excited to hear a debut album from them, because they’ve got a lot of potential to do something really cool, so hopefully they deliver with some killer tunes.

Album Review: A Chapter Called Children of Bodom by Children of Bodom (Spinefarm Records)
The curtain closes on the story of Children of Bodom with the final chapter, A Chapter Called Children of Bodom. The Finnish melodic death metal band will release the closing album of their career, a live recording from their final show at Helsinki Ice Hall in 2019, on 15th December via Spinefarm Records. Children of Bodom need no introduction really, but, just in case, they were a Finnish…
