How do you do fellow asoiaf nerds
Please (please) enjoy this map I made for a King's Landing metro network this summer
Here are some Facts (a lot of them are based on the Paris metro because I have to suffer through it daily)
- There are tunnels that connect the Jaehaerys, Alchemists and Alysanne stations and the signs are so unhelpful you will lose 10 minutes going around in circles every time
- Septon Barth was supposed to be called "Maegor" when lines 5 to 7 were announced but due to the public's opinion they changed it (this is because I originally named the station Maegor wtf was I thinking)
- Lines 3 and 2 have different fares if you want to go to the airports or the harbor
- Some portions of line 6 around High Hill and Aegon I are above ground, the stations and rails have become prime street art real estate, and the neighbourhood around it is gentrified as f
- Line 4 is always late or crowded and the seats have bedbugs
- The station at the Dragonpit is designed to look like a cave and has really cool decorations with fake dragon bones and reproductions of historical artefacts and lore.
- Line 7 was supposed to be a full loop but the rich neighbourhoods on Aegon's Hill and around on Red Keep didn't want the metro running through their backyards. So if you want to go from the River Gate to the Iron Gate you either have to go all the way around the city walls or ride 4 successive lines.
Please critique and suggest improvements and or/fun facts of your own

Good evening fandom! Welcome to my inaugural mini review post. Holy hell I can’t believe we’re finally here. These probably won’t be as detailed as normal like I mentioned. Mini review is the goal. It’ll be initial thoughts and feelings. Which will be fun cause all the other seasons other than S5 I had ton of time to reflect on moments. These thoughts for S6 could change when I rewatch the season for review purposes this summer. The exciting thing is having those first reactions. That's what these will be.
So you're getting hot off the presses thoughts haha I just watched it couple hours ago. These are thoughts I had while it was happening. With some editing to make it readable ha Want my reactions be as authentic as possible with these. Why I avoid spoilers tbh. Be interested in seeing what everyone else’s are as well. The gif library was an absolute turd so I didn't get to use all the gifs that were made yet. So I made some. Anyways this so friggin exciting to delve into so let’s get started.
6x01 Strike Back
Tim got scruffier from the finale to now-and I’m here for it. Mm. Plus he's in Metro gear. Phew Lord. Something about scruffy Tim gets me going. Adore them riding together automatically after their battle. I truly love it. The little things I continually love with them. Also LOVING the Metro call sign. Yum If this going to be his call sign all season I am about it.
Oh my lord why is her sitting at his desk so squee worthy to me? It’s getting me all in my feels. I love that Lucy can just use his office as her own. So cute using it to steal it for some study time. I love this so very much. Then her asking if they can ride together so he can quiz her? Tim doesn’t hesitate for a moment before saying yes.
Still amazes me we’re in the place with them. The Tim of old would’ve groaned and moaned about such a task. He jumps right on it for her. Ready to help her out. Even though he’s not sure how much it’s gonna do. Clearly very aware Primm is out to get her. That is common knowledge now.
Lucy is right when she says it sucks. That she has to battle this and face possible wild cards.. It isn’t fair when she's earned her spot more than most. Fought and clawed for everything she's done in this department. Definitely more than Nolan... Hey wouldn't be a review if I didn't pot shot Nolan would it? lol I love Tim finding a solution for them. Saying they can take out do the box calls all day. Widen her knowledge a bit on it. Sharpen her skills with odd calls.
I love her grateful smile when she says 'Thank you.' Loves this man. Damnit they’re so cute their banter coming out of his office is on point. Tim saying she learns best when she’s pissed off. I mean if that isn’t her rookie experience with him in a sentence. Lucy saying this feels like she is giving him permission to be an ass. Heh it kinda is no matter what Tim says.
You know he kinda loves being able to make her his boot again in some form. He is going to enjoy himself with this. There is no doubt about it. That's why he's doing that smile of his. Lucy calling him out knowing this man so well. Pointing her finger and all. God I love these idiots so much. Tim trying to tell her just his smile. Uh huh sure it is Tim.... Lucy following after him with a smile of her own. These dopes I've missed them so damn much.
I’m very much loving Tim has not really shaved in 6 weeks ha. The scruffy remains and I’m excited about it. Lucy is starting to question asking Tim to help her. We all know she learns best from that man sitting next to her though. I also always enjoy when she gets to drive. Another micro shift that has changed that I love so much. Her heart eyes when he says Angela’s cop brain is just booting up LOL Loves this goober of man.
Lucy absolutely losing it and going on a rant of epic proportions had me rolling. LOL Massive emotional downward spiral happening here. I’m dying as I watch Tim take it in. God Eric the master of expressions crushing it again. This was a huge one for her holy crap. Nuclear really. Well done Melissa getting all that in with one breath basically. By the time she’s done I’m cackling at Tim’s expression. LMAO Oh my god these two. God I’ve missed them so much it pained me.
Lucy knowing Tim's reply without even looking at him. Just epic married status at this point. Doesn’t even have to look at him or for Tim to say anything. It’s already there because of that crazy good connection they have. How deeply they know one another. It’s so good. Tim being the smart man he is says nothing. Lucy knowing he’s thinking it haha
Lucy coming to conclusion she will do crazy wild card during the day and the manual at night. She will sleep when it's over LOL Tim shaking his head. Knowing there is nothing he can say right now that'll make this better. Or to derail her crazy train of thought. This is like S1/S2 them with the added benefit of them being together now. It’s glorious.
Getting serious Plain Clothes Day vibes from this episode as well. Except this time Lucy light years away from who she was then. Confidently reciting what she’s going to do Tim nodding along. Tim wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t rock her boat a little though. Lucy getting in her head about the crime scene now. Tim isn’t wrong she did tick all the obvious boxes. That the point of today is looking for wild cards. That’s what he wants her to engage that brilliant brain of her's in. It's why he's here.
To zero in on the 'Out of the box thinking'. Poor Lucy spirals out not being able to decide if she wants his help or not. I ADORE Tim telling her it’s ok to not know the answer. Not shaming her in the least just needing her to make a call. God how far we’ve come. Tim pushes her because he knows that is when she learns best. Trying to add a little urgency to her decision making. Unfortunately it backfires. I kinda loved them calling each other by their ranks in this heated exchange.
Lucy is so flustered it’s giving me PCD vibe once again in the best way. The sprinklers turn on and Lucy panics. There’s the wild card….We watch as a bullet leaves this man’s body and enters the storm drain never to be seen again. Lucy being so very disappointed in herself. It’s reminiscent of the disappointment she showed in s1 but only now she's far more experienced. So it hurts much more now….Oh Lucy my heart. You poor thing. Couldn’t have gone more wrong if she tried.
I can’t believe they played clown music upon her entrance.... Beyond cruel but that's cops. Always taking shots when people mess up spectacularly. Tim trying not laugh.... Babe she is spiraling right now maybe don’t lol Poor thing I would be mortified too. I love how both Tim and Lucy smile when they see Wes and the wee one. My heart. She wants Wes's opinion and he just crushes her with logic. Ugh She needs a hug. Bad day for our girl.
Lucy continues to break my heart as they sit in front of the crime scene. She is on the verge of tears. Verge of a breakdown it feels like as well. Killing me softly. Saying she should skip the detectives exam. My girl. Tim doesn't want her to give up. I will say this fight I feel like I would be Tim. Trying to be so supportive it’s come off as agreeing with her she can’t do it. When really he was just trying to be supportive of whatever she wants.
Can't win for losing right now Timothy. She is in a bad way right now. Lucy has some weight to her argument though. if I was her in this moment I would feel the same way. If I’m in a bad headspace I need reassurances. So I can relate to both of them in this fight. It’s not a fun time for either of them. Tim is still learning that emotional depth he needs to have with her in these moments.
Being supportive has worked before so he's not sure why it's backfiring right now. They’re solid but always room to grow beauty of them. Lucy spots someone pull up to crime scene crying. She has them peel out with Tim not really understanding why. Lucy catching her digging through her trash. She ends up getting a confession. Phew Well done Luce.
Oooh this final scene. Oh my damn lord. This is some PRIMO productive angst holy hell. Eric and Melissa came out swinging with it. I knew they were going to have one more scene about it. I just didn't think it would be this explosive. I adore Tim picking up on how short she is with him. Grabbing her by the arm and confronting her. Growth continuous growth for them both continues to show. Love it. Look at Tim being the one to come at this. I’m so proud of him.
Throwing her words from 5x21 somewhat back at her. Saying this isn’t going to work if she isn’t honest with him. Then Lucy really lays into him. Now do I think he purposely undermined her? No I don’t. Not ever. That’s not in his DNA to do that to someone he loves. I was deeply hurt for him when she suggested this. You can see how hurt he is when she says as such. He’s getting emotional and it makes me as well. I just wanna hug him.
Tim as we know is a DEEPLY loyal person. Also one of my main relations to him as a character. To purposely hurt someone they love isn’t fathomable to a loyal person. It's unthinkable. You have to hurt them first. To undermine Lucy would be to hurt her so he would never. To be accused of such by your favorite person? That cut's so insanely deep for him. I haven’t seen him this hurt since the 'Tim Test' line from her in 4x08. I’m legit wounded for him. He is so upset she could think that of him.
Now Lucy might be onto something with the subconscious part. He could’ve done it not realizing what he was doing. Because love isn’t rational. Man is hardwired to protect her and want to keep her safe. So I could see this especially with her psych background. I think this is solid guess at what happened. Now was this the right time to lash out at him for Isabel stuff? I don’t know…
Felt like a low blow when he was already down for the count. She is throwing him daggers with her eyes most of this conversation. Feels like its more than just the UC right now but that's just my guess at this point. Let's not forget she was having UC doubts towards the end of last season.
Now do they need to have these fights and conversations? HELL YES. My god this subject needs to be discussed. Especially with how 5x20-5x21 were. Want to reiterate this is my first impression. I was literally writing this as I experienced their fight for first time. When I rewatch it this summer this could change. My POV could shift. But right now I see a man who only thought he had her back and was raked across the coals in this moment.
So for me right now in this moment I feel like Lucy had pent up frustrations and took it out on Tim. The protective side of me for him isn’t pleased with that tbh. Doesn't mean I love Lucy any less. I adore her so much. You all know that. But my gut leaned towards Tim in this fight. That may be bias idk but it’s how I felt when it was said and done. Tim was very very defensive when she brought up Isabel. Which hasn't happened in awhile. But his emotions were heightened and he was on the defensive before they'd reach the topic of her.
Lucy basically kicked him while he was down and he felt it. I'm not discounting her feelings at all. She is allowed to feel overwhelmed. Has every right to be. She is STRESSED and it is coming out in all kinds of ways. Ways that aren't like her. I think she stewed on this thought the ENTIRE shift and it came out in the worst way. Which also isn't like her. What she did had him defaulting back to old school Tim. Cutting off the conversation before more emotions were to be had or he said something he would regret.
Basically cut the fight off at the knees and walked away. Lucy’s face says it all when he walks away. She wasn’t expecting that. Shocked he just left her like that. Oh Lucy, you wounded him more than once and he retreated HARD. Leaving her standing there wondering what the hell just happened? God this is so good though everyone. This is the type of angst I'm all for. What a way to start the season off hot damn. Hurts so good angst to get us going. I could not be more excited for where we go this season. Feel free to comment on this. Love to chat with you all about this. All uncharted territory for us all. We're in for quite the ride.
~~~
Side notes-non Chenford
Who are these friggin people? They’re insanely ruthless. Like Rosalind level ruthless in how they just dispose of people. Sending two their team out as a distraction to be blown up. Jesus. Then sniping their own guy. They’re smart but cold af. Then killing who I thought was the boss at the end. Shit. Consider me intrigued.
I liked the 6 weeks later. Makes sense need to do a time jump.
Celina being more afraid of Tim than Harper. LOL little does she know they’re basically the same person haha
Poor Aaron wants to be back in the game and can’t be. I agree with Grey he’s not ready even if he thinks he is.
God I love Nyla Harper. Took that mofo out like the complete bad ass she is. Came with repercussions which made me sad for her.
Angela being more excited to see burritos than her husband lmao I love this woman.
Feeling little potential flirty action for Aaron and his therapist.
Would you be comfortable sharing any personal info (age, profession, relationship status, etc...)? Completely understand if you're not but it's always really interesting learning about the lives of ppl I admire. Again, if that's not something you wanna do it's totally understandable! I love your art!!
Ah thank you so much 🫶 and sure I dont mind sharing some stuff but to be very honest Im not an interesting person, so I'm sorry in advance for disappointing you.
So I'm a woman (or something like that) even though I use a male pen name for art, Im 22 years old, 151cm (4'11"), the eldest daughter who has two teenage siblings who are both taller than me and make fun of me for being short. I do not have a profession and I do not go to school due to a disability I will not disclose. Im a lesbian engaged to a butch, we've been together for almost 4 years (our anniversary is in August)
My favorite season is winter because all the bugs are dead and I despise summer because the bugs are alive. Im also really scared of butterflies for some reason. Im scared of winged bugs in general. Ive never seen a cockroach in my life but I'd probably kill myself if I saw one. I really hate bugs. The winters are harsh here but I like walking outside when theres light snow falling at night. Im also a bit obsessed with Christmas lights but I dont celebrate Christmas, I dont follow any religion in general but my family is Muslim so Ive been raised with that. If I could just put Christmas lights in my room all year then I would do that. They look really pretty.
About my ethnicity I think everyone knows Im Algerian already, well Ive only been to Algeria once when I was like 8 years old so I dont really remember anything. All I know is that my uncle would keep telling my dad that I convinced him to stop smoking and that he's eternally grateful for that but I literally cannot remember what I did or said back then so I just pretended I knew what he was talking about. Anyway. Id like to go there again one day. I most likely will go soon in the future so it makes me happy to think about it.
My first language is French and Im somewhat fluent in English but it needs more work. Whenever I speak English I have to think harder about the words that come out of my mouth and I start saying things that dont make sense. But my pronunciation is good so other people just assume Im fluent. Also I understand Derja (Algerian Arabic) when people talk to me out loud but I cant form sentences and respond back so I just answer people in French. I know how to read Arabic script and I understand basic words but again I cant form sentences. As for Japanese I can only read Hiragana and Katakana and a bit of Kanji, and my understanding of the language is worse than Arabic, so I practice by translating Japanese song lyrics, reading news articles and talking with Japanese users online
Honestly I dunno what else to say, I dont really have any special skills or anything like that. Unless you count memorizing all the metro stations in Montreal but thats only because I had to use public transport all the time when I was a kid because my parents never felt like driving me to my appointments. At that point I probably visited every single station because I had to go to many random places. I dont have a drivers license but I prefer walking to places in general even though there are no stores near my neighborhood, but I think it's better for me because I get to walk more. I think I really like the idea of travelling in general but I dont have friends for that, my parents also wouldnt allow me to hang out with friends so it's a bit unfortunate
Oh and lately Ive been enjoying making eggs for some reason, I think Im good at doing that. But I only cook whenever Im hungry and I rarely feel hungry so I dont cook many eggs. I also dont like cleaning dishes so I avoid making huge meals in general. I dont really eat much in the first place but I still like food. I really like going to restaurants too. I just like going outside in general. I like listening to music and talking with people, normal stuff like that. Im running out of things to say so I'll probably just stop there.
Hi! I saw your matchup requests were open so I'd like to request a romantic male matchup for Supernatural, Marvel, and DC? (if you aren't doing them feel free to ignore this! And if I requested too many fandoms, do whichever you'd like, I don't want to overload you!!)
My name is Bianca, she/her pronouns, and I'm 18. I am 5’9”, have brown wavy hair (wolfcut?), tan skin, and hazel eyes. I have an athletic sort of hourglass build? My hobbies include reading (classic literature, horror, dystopian novels), writing, painting, and running; a LOT. I absolutely love running and flex my leg muscles ironically every chance I get, which annoys everyone lol. I'm pretty active, and do boxing some archery, and XC/track. I'm always cooking or baking something, my fridge always has some type of dessert. My knowledge in random things/facts is very vast, I have too many interests and retain so much information, and I have an excellent memory. I am a big cat person and love mine to death, she is my child. I am Romanian and English is my second language, but I live in the US (that being said, I'm sorry for any mistakes I can't spell to save my life).
My style/aesthetic really varies but it's mostly like a 90s type of look, a bit dark and grungy. But in the summer, I've been told I dress like a hippy lol. Flared/baggy pants, small shirts and crop tops, leather jackets and big sweaters; otherwise I dress like Adam Sandler. I wear so much jewelry, specifically necklaces and bracelets, and am usually in some type of platform or tall shoes. I may be slightly addicted to music. I love rock/metal and rap, and occasionally some art pop. My favorite bands/artists are Guns N' Roses, Megadeth, Metallica, Future, Metro Boomin, and secretly Doja Cat and Lady Gaga.
As for my personality, that's difficult to explain. I'm an ENTP and ambivert, and am very energetic (and oftentimes dramatic) I'm short tempered (lowkey have anger issues), sarcastic, and a little mean without meaning to be. It takes a while for me to get comfortable with people, and don't really like physical touch unless I'm really close with them. However, I am very loyal to those I love, whether it be romantic or platonic, and care deeply for them. I'm both a logical and creative thinker, and put on this tough and confident persona but I can be really sensitive at times. I'm pretty funny (at least I hope so) and make remarks solely to amuse myself and sometimes others around me. Also, I have ADHD. I find it funny to confuse people and it's hilarious when they get weirded out. I'm also super talkative (which you may have realized by this essay, so sorry for rambling) but also a good listener and am always willing to listen and give advice. Overall, I'm not a very good person but I have some good qualities.
Thank you for taking the time to read this <3
(sorry if it doesn't make sense I skimmed it to proofread😭)
Hey! I'm sorry this got out and posted so late! (Btw, your request makes sense, don't worry :))!
I hope you enjoy your matchups!
(Funnily enough, I was watching Adam Sandler (Happy Gilmore) as I was making this)
Romantic Matchups; Supernatural, Marvel, and DC
~~~
Romantic;
~~~
Supernatural;
Dean Winchester -
You met Dean Winchester when you were both kids, attending the same school during a very rare two years when he and the other Winchester's weren't moving around as much.
If that makes sense..?
Work with me here.
It started when Dean saw you getting teased by some slightly older kid for being "too weird" and for spouting random fun facts. Dean, ever the protective type, jumped in to stop them.
This was during middle school, by the way, kids are cruel.
As an eleven-year-old or something, Dean was kind of impressed by your encyclopedic knowledge of almost everything.
But, when he found out that you knew a lot about rock bands, that won him over instantly.
You two became fast friends, spending recess sharing snacks and swapping stories - Dean always loved your dramatic retellings of random history facts.
Dean was beginning to wish he could stay at the school, no moving, just stay in the same state, the same city, so he could continue being your friend.
He dreaded when he'd have to move again.
Surprisingly, he got to stay longer than he thought he would; to high school, he went with you.
Dean introduced you to other classical rock music, insisting Led Zeppelin IV would change your life.
In turn, you showed him your favorite Guns N' Roses tape, which he eventually admitted wasn’t half bad.
Eventually, he told you about when he and his dad did. Even though it was kind of frowned upon to let regular people know about what they were up to, he told you.
He trusted you, loved you, and knew you would blad or anything.
Just don't tell his dad he told you.
You had countless late-night talks, lying on the hood of the Impala under the stars. Dean would open up in ways he never did with anyone else, and you’d always listen, offering a quiet strength he didn’t know he needed.
And then...
When you turned 18 and got accepted into your dream college, Dean was thrilled for you - but the goodbye was bittersweet.
He didn’t say it, but it felt like he was losing a piece of himself when you left.
He had your number... But he never got the courage to call you... And then he got too busy... With hunts, you know?
And you were off doing your own thing...
Dean kind of came to the realization that you were probably doing better off without him.
You didn't need him anymore.
Years later - decades even - after you had graduated from your dream college, and found yourself working in a different city, Dean found you again while working on a case.
“I’ll be damned,” He muttered with a grin, leaning against the Impala as you stared in disbelief. “Still spouting random facts, or do I finally get some peace and quiet?”
Who knew you were going to walk out of the same grocery store that he was getting ready to walk right into?
The reunion was slightly awkward...
But you and Dean quickly slipped back into old habits effortlessly.
By this time, there was something new brewing, something deeper.
There's something there that wasn't there before... ;)
Before you knew it, you were inseparable again.
Dean’s feelings started to grow the more he spent with you.
And you found yourself drawn to Dean, in the way he protected people he cared about still, like you and Sammy, even at great personal cost.
His loyalty was something you deeply admired.
The romantic tension built slowly, with stolen glances, lingering touches, and Dean cracking jokes to hide how much he wanted to kiss you.
The first kiss happened after a particularly rough hunt. Dean came back to the motel bruised and exhausted, and you scolded him for being reckless.
"You're cute when you're mad," He then said, making you look up at him.
You held his stare, your anger wavering the longer you did as a shiver ran down your spine at the intensity.
He kissed you, slightly impulsive, but perfect.
Dating Dean means lots of road trips in the Impala, with him blasting classic rock and you sneaking in some Megadeth when he’s not looking.
You love to cook not only for yourself but Sam and Dean too; Dean loves whenever you cook or bake - will ask for pie all the time, be warned.
Dean would surprise you with little gifts after a particularly long hunt; bracelets or necklaces that match your style; either grunge or boho.
Arm wrestling matches where Dean pretends to let you win, only to be genuinely surprised by your strength.
Teaching Dean random boxing moves, even though he’s already skilled just so you can "critique his form."
Dean would make sure you are okay during intense or stressful situations; making sure you are not too overwhelmed.
If you are, he'd get you out of the situation, obviously.
Will meet your cat, though Dean doesn't know how to interact with your cat. And your cat is kind of 'meh' about him.
They warm up to each other eventually.
Dean likes to pretend he doesn't notice that you have stolen some of his clothes. He loves it when you wear his clothes, by the way.
~~~
Marvel;
Peter Parker - (Honestly, it could be any Peter, but I thought Tom's Peter worked best) -
As Tony Stark's daughter - yes, lucky you! - you've been in Peter's orbit long before he officially met you.
Yony often mentioned you casually, since you were his very smart, talented daughter after all.
He described you as “a little too much like me - God help the world.”
(By the way, your dad loves spoiling you because you are so cool, you don't act spoiled at all.)
You officially met Peter at the Avengers Compound when Tony introduced you during one of the days you hung out with Bruce Banner.
You came to the compound every Sunday to learn more from Banner and have him help you with your homework if you needed help at all.
You noticed Peter’s awkwardness immediately, making you think about how you were probably acting awkward as well.
Awkward.
You didn't know how you got there, but you ended up accidentally rambling about some random historical fact to him.
Peter was immediately smitten but tried to play it cool, which was hard when you were both witty, smart, and gorgeous.
Peter quickly became your favorite person to banter with, as he could keep up with your fast-paced humor.
Yeah, Peter thought you were pretty funny.
And you even laughed at his jokes too!
You bonded over a shared love of learning and your habit of talking too much about random topics.
Peter loves to text you often with pictures to check in with you when he's on a mission or when you aren't together for some reason.
You’d bake cookies together in the Stark kitchen, with Peter marveling at your skills while simultaneously breaking every egg wrong.
Somehow everything is covered in flour or with eggshells everywhere and in everything.
Peter started to realize that he was falling for you when he found you rushing up to him at the Tower. There was a bright smile on your face and a book in your hands as you ran up to him, telling him all about the new book that you had just finished and needed to tell him all about.
You fell for Peter when you saw how kind he was. He was always putting others before himself, even at his own expense.
The romantic tension built up when you were both staying up late on a school night working on a shared project together.
But, you only had your first kiss when Peter saved you from a dangerous situation.
Peter was rambling, freaking out, and checking you for any injuries when you just pulled him close and kissed him, shutting him up.
Dating Peter involves lots of movie nights where he insists on marathoning old sci-fi movies you secretly enjoy too.
He’d love how you sneak little treats into his backpack when he’s not looking, and you’d adore how he always checks in to make sure you’re safe. Even though he knows that you can take care of yourself.
Peter would always bring you coffee during late-night study sessions, even if it meant webbing across the city at 3 a.m.
He doesn't mind.
He'll do anything for you.
Helping him fix his Spidey suit, adding tiny upgrades just to mess with him. "What about a hidden button that can dispense cookies?"
Dancing together in the lab to Metro Boomin'.
Secretly listening to Lady Gaga together.
Loves gifting your new clothing, especially sweaters.
~~~
DC;
Wally West -
You met Wally West during your first week working with the Justice League.
As a new hero with impressive powers, you caught Wally’s attention immediately.
And as a self-proclaimed "Lady's Man", he approached you with his trademark charm, wanting to break the ice.
You impressed him when you beat him during a sparring lesson, showing off your boxing skills, and leaving him speechless on the mat.
Wally loved how energetic and witty you were, making it easy to strike up a quick friendship.
You bonded over your shared love of fitness, often going on runs together and trying to outpace each other.
He slows down for you so you can actually have fun together.
You like to prank each other sometimes. Nothing too bad, but fun and silly.
He likes to hide your jewelry or platform shoes from you, and you like to swap his snacks out with broccoli and put saran wrap on the doorway.
Wally fell for you one eventful night of fighting Lex Luthor.
Afterward, he watched as you made sure he was alright, making sure he wasn't badly injured.
He loved how deeply you cared for people, especially when you cared for him.
You realized you had feelings for Wally when he stayed up all night with you after a tough mission, he wanted to make sure you were okay.
The tension grew as Wally became more protective of you during missions, always cracking jokes to mask his worry.
Do friends go to the fair together?
I would guess so.
Totally normal thing.
Totally normal for Wally to win that plushie you saw hanging from a game booth.
Totally normal for you both to share elephant ears, beats having to buy two.
Totally normal for you both to go on the Ferris wheel together.
And totally normal for you two to kiss-
Wait.
It happened on the Ferris wheel. You were sitting side by side, watching the twinkling lights of the fair, you clutched the plush to your chest... And then, you both went to say something at the same time.
Awkward but cute.
Your heart was racing.
His was always racing, but it was racing more than usual :)
Your eyes met, and then...
Dating Wally means constant adventures, from impromptu road trips to late-night runs through the city.
Yeah, he still slows down for you.
Wally adores how much you challenge him and how much you make him laugh.
Will obviously go to you when he needs advice.
He totally would propose to you with a Dollar Store Ring Pop. Strawberry flavored.
Loves your cat, will bring treats and toys for your kitty. They are best friends.
Bro, you got ADHD, Wally's got ADHD, he understands and totally gets all the struggles.
If you need time alone for any reason, will make sure you have everything you need - and if you don't, he will run and get you what you need - and then he'd run off and do something while he waits for you.
Kind of clingy, but will understand if you need physical space from him.
He will steal your clothes. He likes wearing your sweaters, jackets, and even your jewelry.
Good News - July 1-7
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $Kaybarr1735! And if you tip me and give me a way to contact you, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week!
1. Footage reveals 'miracle eagle chick' in flight
“In an unprecedented display of extended eagle parenting, the two white-tailed parents skipped this year's breeding season to continue to tend to their year-old offspring. The youngster's wing was broken when the nest fell to the ground during unseasonably wild weather last year. […] The fully-grown chick was being fed fish by its parents, caring behaviour that the eagle expert described as “unprecedented” for the birds. […] “If an immature bird was to reappear near its nesting parents or any other pair the following year [after dispersing], it would likely be aggressively chased away. That’s why this is so exceptional.””
2. Rare wild horses back on Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe after being saved from extinction
“For the first time in at least 200 years, wild Przewalski's horses have returned to Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe. [...] Przewalski's horses are considered the last truly wild horse left on the planet as other species like the American Mustang are descended from domesticated animals. The species were once common across the vast steppes of Central Asia. [...] The zoo will also be sending some Przewalski’s to Mongolia in 2026 where a reintroduction programme has seen their population boom to well over 850 animals.”
3. For one Austin summer camp, public transit is part of the adventure
“[... “O]ver 90% of the kids will tell you that their favorite part of ATX Kids Club is riding the bus.” That’s the program’s goal: getting kids to have fun on public transit so they’ll grow up using it. The nonprofit’s summer camp, which takes kids ages 4 to 12 on field trip “adventures” around the city, uses Capital Metro buses as its main form of transportation. [...] Before camp, [the field trip leader] said, he believed in stereotypes about transit being dirty and “scary” — but his experience with Austin’s bus system has been the opposite so far.”
4. Brazil Prevents Meta from Using People to Power Its AI
“[…P]ersonal photos of Brazilian children are used to build powerful AI tools without their knowledge or consent. In turn, others use these tools to create malicious deepfakes, putting even more children at risk of harm. […] The Brazilian government’s decision is a powerful, proactive move to protect people’s data privacy in the face of swiftly evolving uses and misuses of AI. Yesterday’s action especially helps to protect children from worrying that their personal data, shared with friends and family on Meta’s platforms, might be used to harm them in ways that are impossible to anticipate or guard against.”
5. Ambitious Living Shoreline Project Combats Coastal Land Loss in South Carolina
“Living shorelines stabilize coastlines by reducing the impacts of waves and rising sea levels. They are made of materials that promote the growth of marsh grasses and commercially important species like oysters and crabs. […C]oastal sites could offset almost 80 percent of tidal habitat loss with careful conservation and management. […] Young people in this AmeriCorps program receive training, a living stipend, an education award, and connections to potential employers.”
6. Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge announces proposal to modernize water infrastructure
“Under the refuge’s proposal, the Service would improve 4,400 feet of an earthen water delivery ditch, rehabilitate 1,200 feet of Upper Lake Dam, develop 100 feet of new diversion channel into critical nesting habit for federally endangered southwestern willow flycatcher, modernize current water monitoring stations and improve 640 feet of the Pahranagat Ditch Drain. […] The improvements will result in significant habitat improvements for multiple bird species, [… and] also enhance flood control holding capabilities of the Upper Lake for the Pahranagat Valley.”
7. New chemical process separates textile fibers for easier recycling
“A combined team of chemical and biomolecular engineers [... have] developed a way to chemically separate fibers in textiles, allowing them to be recycled more quickly and cheaply than conventional methods. [... T]hey found they could break apart the textiles in as little as 15 minutes. They also noted that the process [breaks down polyester and spandex into] organic compound[s] that could conceivably be used to create more polyester. [... T]he material integrity of both the nylon and the cotton were retained, suggesting they could be used to make new batches of clothes.”
8. Pongamia trees grow where citrus once flourished, offering renewable energy and plant-based protein
“[Some Floridian] farmers are turning to the pongamia tree, a climate-resilient tree with the potential to produce plant-based proteins and a sustainable biofuel. […] Pongamia trees also don't need fertilizer or pesticides. They flourish in drought or rainy conditions. And they don't require teams of workers to pick the beans. […] The legume is now being used to produce several products, including Panova table oil, Kona protein bars and protein flour. The legumes also produce oil that can be used as a biofuel, largely for aviation, which leaves a very low carbon footprint[….]”
9. Trans candidate celebrates receiving more votes than anti-trans campaigner Posie Parker
“An independent trans candidate says that she hopes receiving more total votes than anti-trans campaigner Posie Parker at the general election will show trans children that they are loved. […] Bristol Central was won by Green Party’s out bisexual co-leader Carla Denyer, while Parker received just 196 votes, equal to 0.5 per cent[….] Elsewhere, trans candidate Sophie Molly secured 225 votes standing as an independent at the other end of the country, in Aberdeen South[….]”
10. Ohio zoo celebrates birth of critically endangered western lowland gorilla
“The Columbus Zoo said the gorilla was born June 29 and first-time mother Sue is "very attentive and providing excellent care to her little one, who she nuzzles and cradles closely." […] “With tiny hands and beautiful big brown eyes that melt our hearts, this baby is absolutely precious—in regard to both the cuteness factor and what the baby represents for this species’ future. We are proud of the dedication of our care teams who diligently work to provide the gorillas with top quality care and wellbeing while continuing the legacy of the Columbus Zoo’s renowned gorilla program,” said Audra Meinelt, curator of the Columbus Zoo’s Congo Expedition region.”
fic: sliding doors
whumptober day 15: childhood trauma masterlist: tumblr, ao3 It could have gone like this.
It’s comically easy to run away from the Olsens. Climb out the window, dig her sneakers into the seams between the bricks to shimmy down the wall, only almost fall twelve times, freedom. Eleven-year-old Mary Sue Poots has done this before. Not from the Olsens, they’re fairly new, but others. This family is fine. Not the worst she’s had. They’re predictable in their anger, they telegraph it to Mary Sue’s well-trained eyes.
Usually, anyway. Her wrists twinge with the results of Mrs. Olsen’s iron grip that Mary Sue had been slow to anticipate.
It’s less than a mile to the nearest subway station, and a pleasant day outside to boot, only mildly humid in comparison to the soup that the rest of summer has been. She swipes her metro card and slips onto the next train, destination: Queens.
While she’s been to the Hall of Science before, it was only for a few minutes. The Rykersons’ three-year-old had gotten fussy, making enough of a scene that his parents shuffled them all off to the park instead. That was six months ago, and Mary Sue has been wanting to finish the visit ever since. She stares up at the curved building, finesses her way through the entrance (“Oh, my mom and dad are just outside, ma’am, see? Those two there. They’ve got my little sister to get situated and told me to just go on ahead. I’m really excited, I’ve enrolled in the science fair at school and everything!”), and begins to absorb everything it has to offer.
Four exhibits in, Mary Sue’s attention is caught by a boy around her age animatedly talking to what she assumes are his parents. He takes after his father in appearance, she observes, all lanky and curly-haired, but he shares the laugh of his heavily pregnant mother, who has folded up one of the museum maps to use as a fan.
They look happy. They look like the sort of family Mary Sue’s always wished she had.
It’s not fair.
Even more unfair is how she’s too distracted to notice the Watch Your Step sign near her feet and promptly face-plants, hard.
Mary Sue considers lying where she is, forever. If she doesn’t look up from the carpet, she won’t be able to see what she knows is everyone making fun of her.
“Hey, you okay?”
Mary Sue sighs. Lying here will not, apparently, work out. Not that her plans ever do. If they did, she’d have found a home by now.
With a grunt, she moves into a sitting position and regards the speaker. It’s the boy that had captured her attention in the first place, his big brown eyes earnest. “I’m fine, thanks.”
The boy lets out a little gasp. “You’re bleeding.”
“What?” Mary Sue glances down at her hands, which, indeed, are scraped raw and welling with drops of blood.
“Mom!” the boy calls over his shoulder.
“No, don’t,” she pleads. The last thing she needs is more attention.
Too late.
“What’s your name, mija?” the boy’s mother asks as his father gently helps her to her feet.
“Mary Sue.”
“Are your parents nearby, Mary Sue?”
“Yeah, they’re … around. Back at the bubble part, I think.” The woman’s eyes are as big and brown as her son’s, and very kind. They make Mary Sue almost not want to lie.
“Berto,” the woman says to her husband, “see if you can find them. Take Robbie with you.”
He complies with an encouraging smile in Mary Sue’s direction and ushers along his son into the previous exhibit. Robbie gives her a little wave as he leaves. Mary Sue responds with half of one.
“I’m Juliana,” says the boy’s mother. “Why don’t we get you cleaned up a little?”
Mary Sue lets herself be all but manhandled to the nearest restroom. For being as far along as she is, Juliana is surprisingly agile. “I can take care of it myself,” Mary Sue says, trying not to sound rude.
Juliana assesses her as she wets a paper towel. “I’m sure you can. Hands, please.”
Grumpily, Mary Sue holds out her hands and lets Juliana daub away the blood and grit. She sucks in a sharp breath as Juliana inadvertently presses on a particularly tender part. “Ow.”
“I’m sorry. Almost done.”
From her purse, Juliana pulls out two band-aids and secures them over the scrapes. A quiet groan escapes her lips as she straightens, her hand pressing into her lower back. Mary Sue comments, “You look like you’re gonna pop.”
“Wish he’d hurry up,” Juliana laughs. “Still a couple more weeks yet.”
“What’s his name?”
“Gabriel.”
“Like the archangel? He was a messenger.” I am Gabriel, recites Sister Maggie’s voice in her head, that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee.
“Yes, that, but it was my father’s name. He passed not long ago.”
“Oh.”
“Many your age wouldn’t know who Gabriel is,” Juliana says. “Sunday school?”
“More like every day school.” Juliana tilts her head in question, and Mary Sue reluctantly elaborates, “I’m from St. Agnes’s. It’s an orphanage.”
Juliana’s face morphs into one Mary Sue is all too familiar with: pity. “So when you say your parents …?”
“Met ’em a couple weeks ago.”
Mary Sue reaches up to fix her mussed hair, which proves to be a mistake. As her sleeves fall down past her forearms, Juliana sucks in a breath. The bruises. Crap.
“Fight at school,” Mary Sue says by rote. She’s got this routine down to a science.
Voice carefully measured, Juliana asks, “Get into a lot of fights, do you? Some of those look old.”
“I can be a brat. People don’t usually like that.”
“A brat?”
“Thanks for the band-aids,” Mary Sue sidesteps quickly. “I’ve gotta go.”
“To your parents?”
“Yeah.”
“All right, let’s go see if Alberto’s tracked them down yet. Maybe we can all get some lunch together.”
Mary Sue knows that tone. The fakeness of it. Juliana has no interest in making nice, and Mary Sue would get the blowback. No thanks.
“I think we have plans already. Mom mentioned something. I’ll find them, you guys don’t have to wait around.”
“Oh. Okay, well …” Juliana reaches again into her purse and scrounges up a pen and a crumpled receipt. She jots down her name and a pager number. “Here. In case you want to meet us later. We saw a Korean barbecue place not too far from here that looked good.”
Mary Sue obediently, impatiently, pockets the receipt.
Unfazed, Juliana’s eyes search Mary Sue’s. She implores, “We’ll be in the city for another week.”
———
Mary Sue doesn’t plan on using the number or Juliana’s hospitality. The woman probably hadn’t meant it. But later that night as she lies in bed listening to the Olsens discuss what to do with her ungrateful self, she fiddles with the edges of the band-aids. Juliana and her family would have finished their barbecue long ago. Mary Sue’s stomach growls at the thought. The Olsens had skipped her dinner.
“— send her back.”
“Garth, no, of course not. We need her.”
“If this is a habit, though … Cheryl, neither of us have the patience for all that.”
“Let’s sleep on it. No reason to rush to a decision.”
Mary Sue grits her teeth at the conversation. Maybe Garth and Cheryl wouldn’t call up St. Agnes’s immediately, maybe they would even wait a week or two. But it always ends up the same: Mary Sue on the steps of the orphanage, her worldly possessions tucked tight into a backpack.
Glad that at least the Olsens had thought their volatile reaction would dissuade her from doing anything rash, she once more pries up the window, shimmies down the wall, and leaves the cul-de-sac. She comes to a stop outside the corner bodega; or, more accurately, the bodega’s payphone. Carefully, for she doesn’t have a whole lot of extra change, she punches in the numbers Juliana had written down. At the prompt, she inputs the number of the payphone, and waits.
It takes only seconds for the phone to ring, as though Juliana had been waiting for it. And she had, as Mary Sue is greeted not with a confused hello but, “Mary Sue?”
“I lied to you, Mrs. Reyes,” Mary Sue says.
“What did you lie about?”
Mary Sue shuts her eyes. The idea of confessing to someone, to someone she barely knows no less, makes her heart race. But what is the alternative? She will never get such an opportunity again, of that she is sure.
“What you saw earlier … I mean, my parents, they … um …”
“Tell me where you are.”
She does, and fifteen minutes later a solemn-faced Alberto ushers her into a cab. From Juliana’s endless purse she gets a travel pack of tissues to dry her tears.
The rest happens in a blur. Mary Sue doesn’t quite understand how it’s accomplished, only that before she knows it, she and the Reyeses are sitting in Sister Maggie’s office and Juliana asks, “Would you like to come with us, mija?”
Mary Sue agrees before the question is even finished, much to Sister Maggie’s bewilderment. One long plane ride later, she walks up the steps of a modest but well-kept home in east Los Angeles.
Which is exactly what it is, she realizes: a home. At last, she has a home.
———
It doesn’t happen like that, of course. Mr. Olsen yells, Mrs. Olsen’s backhand cuts a gash in Mary Sue’s cheek, and first thing the next morning, they send her straight back to the orphanage. Sister Maggie asks about the gash. Mary Sue says she fell off her bike. What use would there be in telling the truth, after all? The nuns wouldn’t care, not when they themselves regularly wield rulers that leave fat, bleeding welts on Mary Sue’s knuckles.
She dreams about it, though. Juliana with her mija and her bandages, Alberto with his kind smile, Robbie who’d called over his parents with worry for a mere stranger. Baby Gabriel, soon, wailing and wanted. The family she could have.
Could have, but won’t. Mary Sue can wail, but she will never be wanted.
Going to try to do some Japan trip blogging about relevant things. First up: I went to Comiket!
['Tokyo Big Sigh' indeed, to quote the discord friend ^^]
There was this tweet going around before the event, which to paraphrase the translation went something like "If you are hoping to have fun this weekend, get off the metro at Odaiba Beach instead. Comiket is a struggle for survival; be prepared to fight or get ready to die". And I laughed at that tweet, but my dudes it was absolutely true. Comiket's combination of scale, intensity, and sprinkle of heat stroke on the wait to get in is unlike anything I have ever seen. Over 250,000 people attended this summer's Comiket; vendor booths numbered in the thousands. Many of them are marked as 'hot commodities' - like the animation director for Bocchi the Rock, Kerorira, tabled there selling a booklet containing production docs from the show, and the line for that booth alone rounded a city block:
These people had priority lists and backup targets; I abandoned this entire idea from the get-go, arriving later and accepting that some things would be sold out. Absolutely the right call, but even then it was still just dizzying to try to take it all in; you can't possibly cover everything, I saw maybe half of the booths at most, and everyone's frenetic energy drags you along too into feeling like you are missing out. Its fun as well as intense though; everything being sold is unique to the event, a deeply precious work from the group that made it, and you find some extremely niche products. It was a bit surreal running into over a dozen artists & writers who I follow on Twitter from across a language barrier, in person, selling their work. It is not a convergence that happens anywhere else.
What I found interesting was that Comiket has this sort of reputation in the west as Japan's "Anime Con", despite them not being similar at all, actually! Comiket is a marketplace, not a con, as the "Comic Market" name implies - the similar starting letters are just a coincidence. While American cons do have large merch halls, and one can argue that they are merch-first affairs for many, that merch is very much not the 'point' of an anime con; the community-focused events that bring attendees together, and connect attendees to panelists, is the core focus. Meanwhile at Comiket the vendor is the focus; as an attendee you are customer, and interface with the event that way almost exclusively.
This is trivial in a certain sense ofc, but I think has knock-on effects; the idea of me, as a customer, "making friends" at Comiket seems like a non-starter. It happens the way it always can of course, but the design of the event generally mitigates against it, including making even the logistics of 'hanging out' difficult with absolutely no seating around. People can't even cosplay in the main hall! Cosplay is in its own hall, where you stand alone and have strangers take photos of you - then you change to go to vendors if you want. Western anime cons meanwhile were (initially) built to promote this directly, with events built around that. However, vendors at Comiket have an intensely different story; sharing tables, helping cover each other's booths for breaks, organizing stock together, etc. You can see how this event builds a sense of community for doujin authors; given their limited financial returns that community is imo a vital source of the longevity of Comiket as a successful event and cultural lodestone for the otaku community.
I think I sort of have a question of "why Comiket" in the back of my mind for this - why is Comiket the symbol of otakudom? Japan does have other events, more con-like ones, of course - but also Japan's fandom is just so much more focused on fanworks, and has been for way longer, with fanwork consumption as a primary mode of expression. It is a bit of a chicken vs the egg issue here; is that focus the reason Comiket is the center, or did having well-organized events like Comiket promote fanworks in a way other communities didn't have? Of course its gonna be a some of each and many more reasons besides, but attending it definitely highlighted that distinction. Comiket is a symbol of cultural difference.
Anyway will post about some of the things I got soon, gotta wax sociological for the brand first ^_^
How is the bean doing? Any new adventures?
She is... okay. She's having a lot of resurging issues that we have previously worked through in the past, and I'm inclined to think it's her EOE acting up again combined with the reality of moving finally settling in. Moving during the summer is ideal in some ways, because it doesn't disrupt a strict schedule; but in others its super hard, because there's no schedule to jump back into, and summertime can be an agonizingly long, timeless void of boredom. We're getting more settled, but still in the void for now. I think it's getting to her.
She's getting a lot more clingy, and some of her bedtime anxiety is coming back. She's also having issues with food again, and I can't tell how much is psychological and how much is her condition. We're going super strict again on the things we've identified in her diet that tend to trigger flare ups in the hope that it'll calm down somewhat and get her back to eating more (and more diversely).
She has had some fun times, though. She LOVES how Grandma is close enough to come play some days. We also rode the Metro, and she was beside herself with glee. Our Metro ride took us to a museum that was super overwhelming, but we also got to go to the zoo and see birds, including flamingos, which are her favorite.
Speaking of birds, we got to take her to a shop that specializes in birds, and she got to touch a parrot in real life. That had been on her list of Need To Dos for a while: "Touch a bird for real." She was a little nervous when the time actually came to pet the bird, probably because she saw it nibbling on my fingers, but the beak was occupied with Mama's hand, so she was able to gently stroke the back of the head, and that satisfied her. She expresses pure delight in either fits of hyena-like laughter, or very quiet contentment, and this was a time for the latter. She spent maybe 3 seconds total touching the bird, but she is still talking about it a month later because she met a bird and touched it, and it talked at her, and for a kid who is currently VERY obsessed with birds, that was all a Very Big Deal.
I'm hoping the coming weeks will have more positive experiences for her so that she's in her best headspace for going into Kindergarten (i'm still not ready 😭). But we went and let her pick out her backpack and lunch box, and we got big sparkly letter stickers to put her name on them, and she seems mostly hype and only a little concern, so that's good.
What is life like in Melbourne? I’m looking into moving there from the UK and would love some insights and whatever else from people who live and work there 💕
I've only visited the UK briefly as a tourist so I'm not sure how to compare them in a way that's going to give you useful info. But I'll give you info at least. Please sit comfortably and we'll begin.
Melbourne has 5 million people in it, but is also quite a large sprawling urban area, so it doesn't feel really packed and busy. It sits on a bay, so it doesn't get freezing but does have the '4 seasons in one day' jokes which are true. I never really got in the habit of checking the weather in the morn before I left for work until I moved away from melb where the forecast was such that I could dress appropriately without surprise.
When I talk about what I love about Melbourne I mean inner suburbs and CBD (which is a beautiful grid and shining example of urban planning for the now that is weighed down by no plans for the future). Public transport connectivity is decent (comparable to London imo) but wait times, delays, and travel times on trams and buses might be relatively crap depending on your experience. It's no Moscow metro (my beloved), but you can probably get to where you're going somehow. Also e scooters have popped off. Further out there's no trams and there's more big gaps between train stations (the train lines are arranged like spokes of a wheel around a central city circle. There will be another city loop slightly overlapping the current one in service next year). This is what I despairingly call The Suburbs. Where you probably need a car to get around and it's like at least 20 mins drive to Anywhere for dinner, groceries or fun activities. Mostly Melbourne is not overly hilly so bikes are an option but infrastructure such as bike lanes is really hit or miss depending on area. Especially good in the inner north. Melb inner suburbs are very walkable and I love love love that. I lived in the inner north and could walk into the CBD to do whatever.
In terms of culture things I think Melbourne is the most international of Aus's capitals in that it has a lot of different people but also that there's a lot open late. Sydney probably can and will make the same claim. But that's it. The rest of Aus is a country town. Major shops will probably close 5.30 or six mon to wed but there's plenty of stuff that's open later. You can always find a bar* or 8. There's plenty of different cuisines in gourmet or fast food dining. There's a cafe in the CBD that's open 24 hours where I can sit outside and have a pot of green tea WHENEVER I WANT. Bookstores open til 10pm. There are lots of events throughout the year and lots of cultural institutions to visit on a whim for free! Some are paid also obvi but I find it difficult to be bored when I can go to the museum to see taxidermy or the NGV for art for free whenever. I am a zoo member which means I get to hang out in a beautiful park/garden which creatures for free whenever I want. Again as you go out further this becomes less true. Fringe cities at the ends of train lines are likely to have what you need to live but less fun activities less often. Not nothing though!
Melbournians really do love wearing black. Especially in winter. They also love strategic Grey. I thought people were exaggerating until I left. A head to toe black outfit is uncommon enough to be remarkable where I live now. Even in a regular boring office where people wear very muted colours I'm the only one who does it. There is no functional difference between the a mourning outfit and one of a Melbournian. it's common wear sneakers with a lot of seemingly formal or corporate outfits, but not thongs with jeans. That's some weird Sydney nonsense.
Being around the bay there's plenty of places to swim in summer! Most of the bay is bordered by beach, most famous and reachable from the city is St Kilda beach. Which is excellent and beyond reproach if you're not Australian and 'fine' if you are. Traveling down towards Mornington Peninsula they get better. 5km makes a difference to the grain of the sand. Some are more fine, can get more coarse and shelly as well. Never stony. Only a little bit of seaweed here and there.
There are parks in the heart of the city (nothing huge like Hyde though) and little wildlife corridors or reserves in most suburbs but it's not an especially Nature city. It's only one hour by train and bus or by car to the Dandenongs (a low mountain range, not to be confused with hugely underated immigrant suburb of Dandenong in melb) though which have cool temperate rainforest national park, lots of gardens (huuuuuge rhododendron garden up there), little b&bs, english style cafes (miss Marples in Olinda is the most famous) and lots of walking and biking. I say one hour but Melbourne as an area reaches right to the base of the range, which is why you can get a bus from the shops. There are national parks that are native woodland or grasslands closer to the heart of the city but these are less special to me because that's the standard nature I see every day of my life. There's a pink lake in south melb which is fun. But I love tree ferns and fresh damp dirt and the tallest flowering trees in the world!!
If you have more specific Q's feel free to ask. I am a city gal at heart but did live rurally originally and frequently do short stays (2 weeks to a month) in rural or remote areas so I am used to comparing amenities and connectivity.
*Melbourne has regular bars but also is very big on rooftop bars. Sydney has some, but other cities hear rooftop bar and think 'bar inside but with views or on top floor of building. Probably formal'. Melbourne roof top bars are on the roof. In the open air (maybe some shade sail) and it's very much a casual thing. Jugs of beer or sangria, chips, feels like a good barbeque rather than a refined cocktail bar. Those are often in basements.
top 5 cinematic depictions of New Orleans?
and/or top 5 things for me to do when I have to be there for work so I might as well get work to pay for a little treat (it will be summer so I will be indoors)
Unfortunately most of my impressions of New Orleans in film and TV are tolerable at best. There are some that absolutely infuriate me (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is on a unique level of awful), but not really any that stand out as worthy of top 5.
So I'll do the other one. Also good to know when you'll be going, as that's very important. Summer is our slowest season in terms of tourism, because it's so nightmarishly hot and there's only so much you can do outside before having a heat stroke.
#5. Have a snoball
They're cheap, sold in many locations throughout the metro, come in dozens of flavors and styles, and are an excellent treat for cooling off in the summer. They're noticeably different from US snowcones, and in my obviously biased opinion better.
#4. Sit in the lobbies of the Montleone and/or Roosevelt hotels
Both centrally located downtown, they're lavishly appointed and good places to stop if you're walking around and need a break in the air conditioning. Both have noteworthy bars: the Carousel in the Montleone is a visual novelty, while the Sazerac in the Roosevelt is noted for inventing the cocktail of the same name. They're also close to a variety of other attractions, like the shops up and down the Rue Royale for the former and the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception or the Orpheum Theater for the latter.
#3. Ride a streetcar
The most popular lines for tourists are on Canal Street and on St. Charles Avenue, the latter pictured above which uses the historical dark green design as opposed to the modern red cars. They're loud and constantly rattling and frequently crowded, but a fun way to experience some of the city's most notable thoroughfares at a glance.
#2. Shop around for food
...So good.
Ahem. Sorry, fried shrimp are basically my comfort food.
New Orleans is well known for its unique, diverse culinary tradition, and there's far more restaurants here than one person could ever eat at in a lifetime. That said however, there's also a bunch of tourist traps, most of which take the form of massive upcharges on dishes (ex. poboys) that are essentially street fare to locals and that we're used to eating at much lower prices. I can't give much in the way of specific recommendations without knowing your preferences or any dietary restrictions (although if you don't like or can't eat seafood, particularly shellfish, your options will be noticeably restricted), but I can say in general that you should do some research beforehand. Look into restaurants that you've heard about and check out their menus before you come. If you're looking for really good deals on food you'd be better off going out to one of the outlying parishes in the metro, but you probably won't have the time for that on a business trip.
#1. Tour the Vieux Carré
This seems like a contradiction in terms of avoiding the heat, but there's better way to experience the essence of the Crescent City than to stroll through the Vieux Carré. Go at night, preferably with other people as it's both more fun and safer that way, and come in the Esplanade Avenue side which is both more picturesque and has easier parking opportunities in addition to being adjacent to the equally interesting Faubourg Marigny. Bourbon near Canal is clogged with drunk tourists at all hours, but other streets like Royale and Chartres have a lot to offer even if you're stepping casually into shops and restaurants. Tour the cathedral, have coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, stop to watch street musicians and performers (they expect to be tipped), go up onto the river levee for the iconic panoramic view of the Place d'Armes/Jackson Square, make bad decisions in any one of the numerous bars (don't get a hand grenade...it's a tourist trap and it tastes awful) that cater to a variety of tastes in debauchery, and ignore any ghost or cemetery tours because that's all overpriced nonsense and you'd be better off befriending some locals and listening to their drunken ramblings.
I speak from personal experience, naturally.
Hi! I hope you're well and enjoying these days of British summer! My question is about Grandmaster because I can't find peace over this. Can you confirm (or not!) if other Naruto characters did appear in the background without being mentioned? Like, at some point Neji fought a blonde guy in the metro, and one of the journalists after a tournament had a blonde ponytail. Are they Naruto and Ino? Are there other Easter eggs? Thank you and can't wait for the next chapter!!! You're brilliant.
Hello there, anon!
I’m terribly sorry for how long it’s taken me to reply to this — I could’ve sworn I already had — but I’m here now and will tell all 🥰
Other Naruto characters absolutely do appear in the background without mention. I like adding silly little stuff like that for my own amusement, and it’s definitely fun when people notice, so thank you. Here goes:
The blonde journalist was not Ino, that was just a coincidence, but you’re right that the guy Neji fought on the subway was meant to be Naruto. There have also been a few more sneaky mentions. At the World Cup, when Tenten is talking to Temari about Neji being on some “body is a temple” thing their friend has got him on, that friend is intended to be Lee (no surprise.) The Swedish player (H. I. Danielsson) who beats Temari at the World Cup and whom Shikamaru dislikes is Hidan, in case people didn’t get that yet, too — not important, just a stupid little play on initials and surname that pleased me. In the most recent chapter, Yakushi’s “weird” second is Orochimaru. Also, the American student who works at the bar whom Kankuro is close to, ‘O’, is intended to be Omoi.
Thank you so much for your time, kindness and thoughts on this story. I’m honoured you’d take any time to think about these things haha.
Hope you have a wonderful day, and that you enjoy what’s to come in the fic ♥️
