Roman Coin Hoard Found in England Sells at Auction
A hoard of Roman coins discovered by a metal detectorist scouring farmland has fetched more than £15,000 after going under the hammer.
More than 430 coins were found buried in the village of Colkirk, near Fakenham, Norfolk.
A collection of 73 pieces, including an extremely rare coin featuring a phoenix on a globe, was auctioned in London.
The anonymous finder had shown "perseverance", said coin specialist Nigel Mills, from Noonans auctioneers.
"Some of the people I've spoken to recently, who have found some amazing finds, are spending a lot of time detecting - hours and hours - and they don't give up," he said.
Tumblr media
"They keep going and that's the secret in so many things - don't give up, keep looking."
The Colkirk hoard, believed to date back to the early 5th Century, was spread out across a third of an acre on arable farmland, although the majority of finds were discovered in a 1.5m (59in) radius.
It was a lucky find for the detectorist, who had no idea the soil held such treasures.
They were out searching a field in January 2020 when they spotted a silver coin, which they recognised as a siliqua - a small, thin Roman coin.
It sparked a haul of 40 coins that day, with a further 40 found on the following one.
Covid lockdowns meant searches became more sporadic, but each discovery was logged with a portable GPS unit to accurately pinpoint the hoard's distribution.
In all, 315 coins were found in 2020, 114 in 2021 and three in 2022.

Some of the coins had been damaged, while others were fragmented due to farming processes.
A commemorative Third Miliarensis coin issued by Emperor Theodosius, decorated with a phoenix on one side, was only the fifth one of its type known to exist, with all the others in museums.
It reached £3,400 at the sale in Mayfair.
Mr Mills said: "The hoard had [been] spread out over a third of an acre through disturbance by ploughing and has been recorded under the Treasure Act.
"The hoard is likely to have been deposited at the beginning of the 5th Century AD, with the latest coin of Honorius dating no later than 402 AD.
"Other Roman treasure finds of gold and silver also from East Anglia, such as the Hoxne and Thetford hoards, reflect the wealth and importance of the area."

I feel like this is a good time to remind my followers of the full-circleness of it all; the 2001 Queen of the Damned film with rockstar Lestat featured songs composed by Jonathan Davis of Korn, my absolute favorite singer throughout my teenage years (and to this day, lbr). Before getting into IWTV I enjoyed those songs on their own, having no real idea of what they were supposed to be about. Now, we're getting actual rockstar Lestat, and looking back relistening to those nu metal rockstar Lestat songs, knowing that the singer that's been absolutely formative for me is singing from the pov of Lestat (and Akasha), a character that's become such a big part of my life as well.
it's just yet another way everything is connected and the world's smaller than you think.
Anyway if you haven't heard his original compositions for QOTD that he himself sings on the soundtrack, they're really, really good- System, Forsaken, Careless, Redeemer, Slept So Long, Not Meant For Me... give 'em a listen! He's done all of them live many years later too, and there's great recordings of those.

(the live version of Careless is truly extraordinary imo...)

Today's Date is May 2nd, 2024 and today's card is Arcee, Sharpshooter//Arcee, Acrobatic Coupe!
[ID; (Arcee, Sharpshooter) This card depicts a pink and white feminine robot [autobot] named Arcee. She has long white legs with pink kneecaps and pink feet with grey ankles. Where her groin would be there's a pink arrow angular piece of metal (codpiece? idk if that's right?) She has a white boxy waist with a piece jutting out that include some grey ridged cylinder in the front, and a boxy pink chest attached with no breasts. She has spherical pink shoulders with white upper arms and pink forearms with white hands attached. On her back is an almost triangular set of wings? possibly? (they don't look very winged but that's the closest comparison that sit vertically aligned to her back. Her head is white with a dorky lookin white helmet/maybe hair?
She is mid leap into the air shooting lasers from her blaster [right hand] at a deep blue and black robot with red eyes and a bigger, chunkier blaster. In her left hand she's holding what appears to be a smoking energy sword. In the background there's a modern brown building with some tinted looking windows and lots of pink laser fire around. Next to the brown building There's a murky green building with tinted blue windows with a white border on each. In some parts of the background you can see smoke likely caused by the laser fire.
She is a White and Red Legendary Artifact Creature that cost 1 uncolored mana, 1 White mana, and 1 Red mana. Her subtype is Robot and she is a mythic rare.
Her rules text reads "More Than Meets The Eye 1 Red 1 White (You may cast this card converted for 1 Red 1 White)

The doors of the car are dark grey and the wheels are black. This car is, once again, leaping high into the air above the road. Below it you can see a yellow pickup truck parked on the side of the road. Opposite to the truck there is a light grey sidewalk, and two buildings. One is the same light brown with tinted windows as before, the other is light grey with blue windows, interestingly different to the building in its place on the previous image.

I love how in mass effect 1, there’s an artifact you can find by CHANCE during planet exploration that when interacting with it, it sends Shepard and her crewmates on a mind bending, world altering mind trip that feels like thousands of years to them, and it’s just… left there.

-->And then – fishing! With nothing better for my boy and my enby to do, I sent them over to the local fishing spot at the lovely Lake Lunvik via their various teleports and had them start fishing. Smiler got a nice salmon, while Victor caught a Discus AND the “Wise Wolfman” tablet! Not that he can read it properly, as the runes are secret werewolf language script, but still – cool to have! He also got up to Fishing level 7, which was nice, and developed a Like for the activity – hey, he may not enjoy EATING fish, but catching them is something else. :p
-->Meanwhile, Alice, feeling the rage after enhancing her smell and scavenging for goodies again (again with no luck – how was it Victor was luckier with his fishing than she was with her scavenging when it came to werewolf artifacts?), super-sped her way to the top of the Howling Point to have a private spot for a potential rampage! I had her do some howling, yet more scavenging (she picked up some Plathinum, at least), stomping around angrily, napping, and grooming herself, and eventually she went over the edge into a proper RAMPAGE! Which, as per usual, consisted of her doing some more scavenging just to see if she’d dig anything cool up, before regaining control and going back to normal. XD Look, if you’re not the kind of werewolf who enjoys spooking people, rampages are kind of a whole lot of nothing. :P
-->With Alice having gotten in a lot of werewolf practice (enough to get an ability point, in fact! I picked up “Natural Healing” just so I could unlock the “Immortal” ability for later – once I can get her and Victor to be immortal like Smiler is, I’ll go ahead and turn aging back on for the save), and the hour getting VERY late, I decided it was time the gang headed home. Alice and Victor had a nice "home again" makeout by the front door, then Alice sped off to bed while Victor and Smiler cuddled in the front entrance. :) I was feeling very content indeed with the day –
-->And then I looked over, saw the entire wind farm was broken, and grumbled to myself as I got Victor to Repairio the lot as Smiler paid the bills. XD Smiler then got put on mechanism-making duty while I had Victor make some eco upgrade parts – or, at least, try to make some eco upgrade parts. The first attempt ended with him in a fight with the fabricator, and the second attempt ended with him getting spooked by the house making weird noises. *shakehead* Not a good night for Victor there. I gave up and had him go to bed just as a refreshed Alice was getting up – SHE got sent to pick up volume three of the vampiric encyclopedia to read in the séance room, only to discover that it was a bit too advanced for her understanding yet. Ah well, she tried.
And that is that for this particular episode! Next time, we check out Spring Tuesday, which also involves the trio getting their occult on -- only this time we're focusing on VICTOR'S brand instead of Alice's...

Metal Detectorist Finds Rare 2,000-Year-Old Celtic Coin
A metal detectorist says he did a “jig of joy” after turning up an “exceptionally rare” 2,000-year-old Celtic coin worth thousands of pounds.
Grandfather Mike Taylor couldn’t contain his excitement after finding the rose gold stater while searching farmland in Bishton, near Gwent, South Wales.
fter getting an “iffy” signal from his detector, he dug down four inches before uncovering the coin, struck during the reign of Antedios, an Iceni ruler, from 20-47AD.
The incredibly detailed coin, thought to be worth £4,000, depicts a triple-tailed horse alongside a cross, crescent, six-spoked wheel and pellets.
It bears the tree emblem of the Dobunni, an Iron Age tribe living in Britain prior to the Roman conquest.
The name of Antedios is inscribed in full with a Greek letter, which is unusual as abbreviations were more common.
A Timeline Auctions spokesman said: “This variant is rare because it features the complete name of the ruler, unlike most coins where part of the name is missing.
“Additionally, the ruler’s name is inscribed with the Greek letter Θ, whereas it is usually written with the letter ‘D’. It is a well-centred example with sharp details.
“Only one other example with this lettering is recorded, and our example also includes three extra pellets behind the tail. This makes it an exceptionally rare and beautiful coin in lustrous rose gold.”
Antedios remained neutral during the Roman invasion of 43AD and was made a client of Rome.

Suzu
Japanese 17th century
The term suzu refers to two Japanese instruments associated with Shinto ritual: (1) a single large crotal bell similar in shape to a sleigh bell and having a slit on one side; and (2) a handheld bell-tree with small crotal bells strung in three levels on a spiraling wire. The larger form may be hung from a rafter in front of a Shinto shrine and sounded by a robe or ribbons that hang within reach of the worshipper. The smaller suzu seen here is supported atop a handle and is held by female shrine attendants (miko) costumed in traditional robes, white-powdered faces, and wearing Heian-period coiffure during performances of kagura dance. Kagura (music for the gods) is a term encompassing Shinto instrumental music, songs, and dances performed at shrines and at court. It was formalized as early as 773, when it appeared in the palace repertoire. These small bells, ritual implements of great antiquity, may also be grouped together in bundles for folk and ceremonial performances.
