Weird things you gain from doing archaeology

Immunity to nettles

Handling a shovel both left and right handed

Bird identification

Noticing the tiniest bit of slope in a landscape.

Farmer style weather predictions. I’m out when I see low flying sparrows.

After checking a compass once, you automatically sense where north is for the rest of the week

High tolerance for rain/getting wet

You can fix anything with duct tape, zip ties and a little bit of rope. Additional pocket knife is allowed

I have always loved in One Piece Robin's weird dark sense of humor. The thing is I have now realized as a professional archaeologist, working with other archaeologist all day, that is 100% all of our sense of humor. My supervisor and I are constantly saying dark and creepy shit to each other with completely deadpan faces. I swear if I said any given creepy Robin line to him, he would probably deadpan something creepier right back.

Dear archaeologists

Always wear your helmet.

I am lying home in the dark with a mild concussion cuz I got hit in the head by an excavator.

This could have been a lot worse or even fatal had I not been wearing an helmet.

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET!

Also, I am throwing my trusty helmet out since it is compromised by the blow. Thank you for your service!

Teaching students how to describe soil colors, but you’ve got no clue what greyish-brown or brownish-grey is yourself

I’ve probably eaten dead Roman

Trowel throwing competitions

Giving names to skeletons you’re excavating

You’re on a constant field walk. Architecture, place names, street signs... You spot it all

Comparing weather app predictions with your colleagues

Collecting pretty stones, preferably quartz or silex

Being very possessive over a shovel

Trying to find north without a compass so the lot of us are standing there hoping the sun breaks through

Bonus addition: I’ve seen plenty of archaeologists who collect broken bits of ceramic smoking pipes and they hold competitions to who has more, measured by weight
