Season 5 is so painful to watch if Merlin is your favorite character.

Can we just let Merlin exist and be happy.  Can we just let him live his life.  Can we just let him know that his life is not only about Arthur and Camelot. Please.

arthur snaps his fingers as he recalls the memory: i apologized for sacking you and you said that if i bought you a drink we’d be even.

merlin now remembering how he had stumbled into camelot, picked a fight with a pigheaded bully which quickly turned homoerotic and flirtatious, and continued their teasing-flirting for days before merlin shot his shot and asked the prince out only to be rejected: oh yeah, i forgot i did that…..wait, you mean you didnt realize what i was asking?

arthur: no?? we argued everyday, how was i supposed to realize you were asking me out??

merlin now abandoning the dinner and staring across the camp at arthur while the rest of the knights watch their back and forth like a game of tennis: to you we were arguing, to me that was very much flirting. i thought you were flirting back so i decided to ask you. then you rejected me

arthur, mentally beating his past self up for fucking up their chance: i didn’t reject you!!! i just didn’t realize what you were asking me. how was i meant to? we fought every chance we got

leon, nudging elyan, glee and excitement riling through him: its happening!!! its finally happening!!! seven long, grueling years is finally paying off!!!

merlin, realizing the misunderstanding and acknowledging the fact that he wasn’t rejected, his flirtations just weren’t noticed - realizing he still has a chance: oh…oh i see. arthur, my dear, our fights were extremely flirtatious. need i remind you of what you said? “do you know how to walk on your knees? would you like me to teach you?” or “i could take you apart with one blow”

arthur, mental capabilities at an all time low: m…my dear….?????????

merlin grinning devilishly as he realizes that his flirtatious persona he had hidden away after falling head over heels for arthur can make a come back: that is what i called you. should i call you something else? say…mine?

do people really look at arthur and just go “yeah hes allistic” like that is the most autistic man ive ever seen (half joking). arthur is so driven and steadfast in his ideals so when something shakes him it shakes him Hard. its hard for him to regulate emotions well (trauma + autism). he trusts easily, which is funny because he says he doesnt when he so clearly does. hes “dense” at times and doesnt pick up on a lot of subtleties, and when he does he finds it hard to express what he wants to say (again this is both a trauma thing and an autism thing). he fidgets, especially with his mothers ring. theres alot more i could name but thats all i could think of right now

some hcs: he likes routine and this is mostly the reason why he gets annoyed at merlin whenever he unknowingly derails it, i got this one from a fic actually but i think one of his special interests is just like cataloguing and organizing things and when he was younger he liked doing that with bugs and as he grew older he had to focus his attention to more “practical” things (because of uthers insistence) so he does this with weapons as well as like utilizes this skill in directions as well, this guy hates so many textures i feel and all day everyday hes seconds away from a meltdown (which manifests into snappy anger) but he grits through it because he cares more about duty than his “weird brain problem”

i think itd be funny (and sad) to imagine arthur thinking he was probably cursed as a child, then a magic a reveal happens, then after all of that arthur asks merlin if he Is cursed and merlin is like “i think youre just. Like That. but thats okay im also kind of Like That” and arthur realizes that his manservant truly was just a little weirdo and that wasnt just his magic talking and maybe HES also a little weirdo. solidarity

Merlin but Merlin loses it when Arthur dies and instinctively starts a time loop and every time Arthur dies it automatically resets...for angst purposes it could stay tragic..no matter what he does to change the past kilgharra was right. no one can change their destiny nor can they escape it. or by starting this time loop at all he's doing is preventing the rise of the once and future king so by staving off Arthur's death he's actually preventing anyone from ever really living again. a never ending story with one character aware of the narrative but powerless to change it. a puppet with a brain but no autonomy to put it to use. A tragedy of his own making instead the one prophesized

"Arturia...? Who the fuck is that...? 'T sounds like the name of a girl that never even lived... I don't remember meeting someone like that. I did though, meet a young man named Arthur... Or did I? Maybe someone did, certainly not me."

He snorts, a leg crossing over his thigh and his elbow resting on it, his chin is placed on his hand. As an all, he seems quite amused by the question.

"And what would I even think about that kid? What would I even care? Everyone knows the story. The rightful King of Britain put down the usurper, the evil dragon, the vile Vortigern, whom went out kicking and screaming like the wretched thing he was... Pffffff!! That's great! Not like it's got anything to do with me, though! I am Faerie King Oberon, after all!"

He actually breaks into a fit of laughter at that, insectoid hand clapping his knee, other going to wipe imaginary tears off his face.

"And Mordred you say? Oh, he's great! That other Morgan was certainly a witch, wasn't she? I think I like her better than mine! Seriously, how wicked could she get? What a play! And to think that's what managed to put down Arthur... alone, betrayed, sullied in every possible way... What a loser, couldn't ever be me! Wish I was there for the shitshow...!"

I’m reading a law text book for fun and I starting thinking about how reading this would stop Arthur pendragon’s heart

Wait wait wait also!! AU where, when the Disir tell Arthur that Mordred will only be healed if magic is freed, they don’t mean that they’ll heal him. They are challenging Merlin not to allow Arthur any more ‘exceptions’ to his own laws — Mordred can be healed by magic only after it is made legal to use magic for healing. Of course, the paradox is the same: If Arthur refused to change the law and Merlin healed Mordred anyway, it would symbolize him ‘giving Arthur up’ to fate by ‘choosing’ Mordred, knowing that it would lead to Arthur’s death

I had this random thought today (and I'm probably not the first) about Arthur reincarnating into present day with no memory of his past life and becoming one of those better-than-you incluencer celebrities and Merlin having to go through the whole "I'd never have a friend who could be such an ass" spiel again like "Are you fucking kidding me, not again 🙄".
