thinking about one of my fav merlin quotes (3x11's "it's lonely to be more powerful than any man you know and have to live like a shadow.") and this snippet of my writing ("everything casts a shadow. even grief. especially grief.") in relation to like merlin & arthur's dynamic bc it's so delicious.

i'm gna ramble for a bit bc like arthur's shadow will forever be merlin even after he dies. we compare arthur to the sun a lot and i do agree w it but, going a step further, i think it'd be better to say that he's a supernova. supernovas are defined by 1. the sheer power of their luminosity and 2. the fact that they are only so bright because they're dying. and the brighter the light, the darker the shadow! and merlin is the shadow!!!!

it just gets to me how merlin lived for a thousand years shadowed in his own grief, forever just catching a glimpse of that shining golden age that could've been where arthur's alive and he's repealed the ban on magic and merlin is finally not lonely anymore. but it never happened. god..... merlin's been lonely for all his life and he will continue to be lonely and marred by grief, i think, even after returns. to be entrenched in something so long i fear he would not know himself outside of those feelings you know?? do you think he would obsess over the inevitable end? arthur arises again and when he is no longer needed, will the goddesses spare him? will they finally grant him the death he has longed for?

anyway. i don't know... i DON'T KNOW. i have a lot of emotions abt them

Let’s just talk about this episode for a moment

It’s so important to Merlin’s story and character and I feel like we ignore it. It’s the only episode where we see Merlin guiding rather than being guided. We see him so clearly by watching him learn Gilli’s view of the world and helping him change that view. He’d met so many magic-users that hated Uther and Camelot but this was the first time he’d been able to make a difference and he ran at it full pelt (which is one of the most Merlin things he’s ever done, honestly)

And it’s really good to see Merlin gain a friend (who’s a sorcerer) that doesn’t die by the end of the episode. He and Gilli understand each other on such a deep level. They have been treated so similarly by the people in their lives and the comfort they find in the fact that they’re not alone in that experience is wonderful.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I will always hope that Merlin and Gilli found each other after this. Their bond is too important for them to have never met again.

I always felt the show should have had someone unequivocally good call emrys a traitor to magic. Like if Morgana did (don't remember if she did or if I just read it too much in fanfics), it could be said she is just evil/manipulative. But if someone good did, maybe merlin could self reflect. Cause I don't think merlin realized he was self sabotaging a lot

tbh i don’t think that would have changed the outcome. there have already been characters that point out his behavior (see Gili from 3x11) and we’ll see him self reflect but that ends up going nowhere and shoved into “Files Merlin Will Pick up Later When Ppl Stop Trying to Kill the Pendragons!” also, how is he to know they are unequivocally good? by s5 he doesn’t trust many strangers or those that aren’t in his circle. he’ll be open to people with magic that seek to help him (5x10) but they aren’t really the people who would warn him about his self-sabotaging issues

honestly, Mordred is the greatest candidate by s5. he is good. he wants to help. he uses magic, but Merlin doesn’t trust him. he cannot trust him because the prophecies and visions say that Mordred is the one who will kill Arthur for good

and what’s interesting is that there are moments where you could argue Mordred knows Merlin is self-sabotaging and tries to help, but his effort just pushes Merlin to continue.

but also if bbc merlin would just stop killing Merlin’s friends we wouldn’t be having this issue 😠 December would be saved (maybe…idk)

re-listening to children of the sun right after my rewatch of 3x10 and 3x11 is soul destroying, really. for some reason when I first watched s3 I did not appreciate any of it (maybe cuz the hyperfixation was fading, maybe cuz I wasn't too keen on the idea of sequel shows that didn't involve the trollhunters characters ala marvel-ing/the franchisation of trollhunters which imo was already a perfect series that might be ruined by the presence of other shows, maybe it's bc anton wasn't voicing jim anymore, maybe it's cuz I thought troll jim was done too late and too sloppily, maybe it's cuz I just hated merlin, maybe it's cuz I'd always been keen on my half changeling jim theory and was sad to see it not come true, maybe it was a mix of all these things. 17 y/o me was going through a lot in regards to this show lmao) hence why I don't remember much of s3.

but it's shaping up to be possibly my fave season of this show. s2 has better separate episodes but s3 has a better running arc (so far). if they pull off the 2 part finale well and keep the excellency of the past few eps, they'll outdo themselves in creating a narratively perfect series (regardless of the subsequent series and movie :))

needless to say i have pretty high hopes mainly bc 3x10 and 3x11 was basically some of the best this show has been
