Look, this is ridiculous. But it’s bugging me. It bugs me on and off (though less since it’s been a while since I wrote poetry and had to worry about meter).

Written it feels like two. Spoken it feels like one. Until I’m paying attention to it and then it feels like two again. But then I say it again and it feels like one again.

Kai: (What kind of doll should I make today…)

(Master Mere? Or maybe Tis? Making a different outfit than the one yesterday sounds nice too.)

Tis: Kai!

… Woah, the floor looks like it's getting swallowed by papers. What doll are you making today?

Kai: That's what I'm thinking right now.

Anyway, what about your lecture with Master Mere? Don't tell me you're skipping again…

Tis: No, not at all! I attended it till the end properly today.

Kai: I see. That's fine then…

Tis: So let's go outside and play! The weather's nice, so how about we go river rafting in the human world?

The sword of the day is the mere pounamu.

The mere pounamu is a short, paddle-shaped club from the indigenous Māori of Aotearoa (New Zealand). It is an extremely potent symbol of status, a chief’s weapon, and a family heirloom. Individual mere were given names (the one pictured is named Kataore, after a chief), and thought to be imbued with magic or supernatural powers. As the name suggests, it is composed of nephrite jade (aka pounamu or greenstone). The durable material they are made of means that a mere could take more than a year to carve by hand. In combat, the mere would be used primarily as a jabbing weapon, in contrast to most other clubs, with strikes directed at the temples, neck, or ribs.
