Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

I would really appreciate some prayers. I've been having so much money problems recently and I'm just not sure what to do. Every month I end up either in the negative or close to the negative. And it doesn't help that each month I have ended up having to make some big spendings because something essential has broken which needed replaced or whatever else. I can't currently get any help to cover my rent, because I'm still couchsurfing. The landlord of the place that I'm couchsurfing at isn't happy with my finances, and may refuse to add me to the tenancy, which would mean I would have to leave here. I don't even know why the landlord has an issue, because the rent has been getting paid on time without any difficulties. If I were to get added to the tenancy, I could finally ask for extra benefits to help me with the rent which would give me more money for living. But right now rent takes away from most of my benefits. I've been trying to cut spending where I can, but it's so stressful and miserable and overwhelming. I hate that I'm still in the same position I was in, where I'm just couchsurfing and trying to catch a break. I'm not currently in a position where I can save any money at all. And there's still the possibility that I'll be in a worse place housing wise if I'm not allowed to stay here. The fact that this has dragged out for so many months, and I'm still in the position of losing so much has me constantly depressed and suicidal. I just don't know what to do. Everywhere I have reached out to has been unable to assist me

i wanted to write another reassuring psa for you lovely people today, primarily because i've seen some posts on my own dash and it might seem very unsettling for people who haven't been on the dash for so long.
when someone announces that they'll be doing a spring-clean and limiting their followers, that is not an insult nor is it ever intended to be.
here's the thing. on tumblr, we forget ourselves. you see your list of followers as a number and maybe you think "oh wow, that's a good number, i must be doing something right!" and it's a lovely feeling! now let's say you have 150 followers. let's say 30 of them have more than one blog on which they're following you, so that's. let's say it's 100 people.
now imagine this scenario: there are no computers. there are, instead, 100 people standing in a line in front of your desk. they have two or three roleplay memes to deliver, a thread or two to continue. that's 500 things, maybe, for someone to do. someone who already has other obligations behind the screen, like a job, or school, a family, ANYTHING. either way, even if they really have nothing else going on, 500 things is a LOT. and maybe you're actually experiencing stress doing something that's supposed to be lowering your stress levels as a result.
now this isn't me telling you that 100 people is too many people to be following. it's just an example. some people manage just fine with more, or less. but if you're at home, stressing and panicking over just how many things you have to focus on here, and then maybe you wanna explore a new verse, a new idea, a new SOMETHING, then it's very overwhelming. and i want you to know something.
it is okay for you to decide to lower your follower count. you are not a bad person for doing that. the people you remove from the list of mutuals are similarly not bad people. it's sometimes just a necessary thing to do, and i know for a fact that it's not a decision that's instinctual; it's often a choice made after weeks of taking a break and deleting drafts and emptying inboxes. you can refollow again when things are easier! nobody said you can't! but we have to stop normalizing the idea that it's okay to be stressed on here. it isn't. we're here to have fun. i love you all, go hydrate, stretch yourselves out, play some music and wash your face.
