Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie, GBE (baptismal name: Fikirte Mariam; 12 January 1912 – 6 April 2003) was the eldest child of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw.
Born in the city of Harar, Princess Tenagnework received her title upon her father's succession to the imperial throne in November 1930. Princess Tenagnework was first married to Ras Desta Damtew, a member of the prominent aristocratic Addisge clan. Ras Desta and Princess Tenagnework were the parents of two sons, Amha and Iskinder Desta (later Rear Admiral), and four daughters, Princesses Aida Desta, Seble Desta, Sophia Desta and Hirut Desta. Ras Desta Damtew was appointed Governor-General, first of Kaffa and Limu, and then of Sidamo.
In 1935, following the invasion of Ethiopia by Italy, the imperial family was forced to flee into exile at Fairfield House, Bath in England. However, Ras Desta remained behind to command the imperial forces fighting in the south of the country. Ras Desta was captured and summarily executed by the fascist forces. While in exile, Princess Tenagnework gave birth to Emebet Tsige Mariam (Mary) during a brief union with Ato Abebe Retta, who later served in ambassadorial and other roles in the post-war imperial government, and would eventually become president of the Imperial Senate after their separation.

Empress Menen Asfaw (1881–1962) was the wife of Emperor Haile Selassie I and a significant figure in Ethiopian history, known for her contributions to education, philanthropy, and women’s empowerment. Born in Wollo, Ethiopia, she came from a noble lineage and was known for her strong moral character and deep devotion to her Orthodox Christian faith. She married Haile Selassie in 1911, becoming his lifelong partner and the first officially crowned Empress of Ethiopia during his reign.
Empress Menen was a passionate advocate for education, particularly for women and girls, establishing several schools, including one of Ethiopia’s first all-girls schools. She was also actively involved in social and religious causes, supporting the construction of churches, promoting the welfare of the poor, and fostering unity in her country. Her efforts earned her immense respect and admiration among Ethiopians and others worldwide.
Empress Menen passed away on February 15, 1962, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the age of 80. Her death was deeply mourned across the nation. She was buried at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, where her contributions to the Ethiopian people and her legacy of compassion and leadership are remembered. Today, she remains an iconic figure in Ethiopian history and is revered in Rastafari culture as a symbol of motherhood, dignity, and spiritual strength. 🇪🇹

Ethiopian Royal Tiaras
Lately I’ve been researching the tiaras of the former Ethiopian Imperial Family and there are quite a few tiaras that I’ve never seen before. If you’ve been following me a while you may have heard me say that I’ve really been trying to expand my coverage of non-European tiaras because there are so many great tiaras out there but it is much more difficult to find pictures and especially information about them. As I expected, I can’t find enough information to make posts for more than a couple them and those will be heavy on pictures and light on info but I still wanted to share these tiaras with you.
This is Empress Menen Asfaw’s most worn tiara and it is stunning.

Here are some of her other tiaras

Princess Tenagnework - She’s Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw’s oldest daughter and she acted as first lady after her mother passed away.

Princess Yeshashwork, Princess Sara Gizaw, and Princess Tsehai

Princess Aida Desta and Princess Seble Desta

Some princesses I haven’t been able to identify

And here’s a video of Emperor Haile Selassie’s Silver Jubilee in 1955 so you can see some of the tiaras in action.
