On This Day The 24th October In 1960 Elvis Presley Is Recognised By Arkansas State College And Is Presented And Awarded By Them The Man Of The Year Award At Is Home Graceland In Memphis Tennessee.By Two Representatives Who Come in Person From The Tau Epilson Fraternity At The Arkansas State College.
The Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Arkansas State College was riding high on a wave of publicity in the fall of 1960. The fraternity had grabbed some positive headlines when chapter president Rick Husky, a journalism student from Wynne, succeeded in getting Ronald Reagan to drop by the fraternity house during his visit to Jonesboro.
Emboldened by the publicity Reagan's visit got, Husky dreamed up an idea to initiate someone famous as an honorary member. Elvis Presley was the unanimous choice, but no one believed Husky could pull it off. 'In fact, I remember several members pretty much laughing in my face', Husky said.
Rising to the challenge, Husky came up with the idea of presenting Elvis Presley with a Man of the Year Award for his considerable contributions to charity.
Elvis Presley had recently been discharged from the Army and had just arrived back at Graceland from Germany. Husky got the name of Elvis' Presley’s ‘secretary from a fan magazine and sent a letter to Elvis Presley at Graceland in care of the secretary notifying him that TKE wished to present him with his award.
But even he wasn't prepared for what followed when the world's biggest entertainer actually accepted their invitation to become an honorary TKE brother. 'Several days after mailing the letter to Graceland, I was shocked to receive a telegram at my dorm room', Husky said. 'It was from Elvis Presley ‘s secretary stating he was happy to learn of his Man of the Year Award. I was invited to Graceland to present the award and to initiate Elvis Presley at a night and time the following week'.
There was just one problem though. While the idea of recognizing Elvis Presley for his charity work was sincere, Husky had nothing to actually present to the entertainer because he had completely concocted the award as a publicity stunt. In a panic, Husky hurriedly dashed off some words to be engraved on a plaque for Elvis Presley’s Name and through some arm twisting, was able to get a Jonesboro sporting goods store to prepare an impressive polished brass plaque. Husky and TKE members Don DeArmen of Corning and Jeff Sheraer of Patterson, Mo., along with faculty member and fraternity advisor Robert Howe and photographer Charles Crowe, set out for Graceland on Oct. 24, 1960 in Husky's 1956 pink and white Ford for their meeting with Elvis Presley.Very Rare B/W Candid Photos Of Elvis Presley With The Two Representatives From Arkansas State College Tau Kappa Epilson Fraternity Taken By Elvis Presley’s Father Vernon Presley Here At Graceland And Also Of Is Famous Son Being Presented Here With The Man Of The Year Award And The Badge Pin As Well Here On The 24th October In 1960. As At the last mintue Charles Crowe Had A Family Emergency So Thank God Elvis Presley’s Father Vernon Presley Stepped In To Take These Rare B/W Candid Photos As Vernon Presley was An Excellent Photographer So Vernon Elvis Presley’s Father Saved The Day. And Of Course He Was Extremely Happy To See His Famous Son Elvis Presley Had Been Given The Recognition That He Truly Deserved.
True Fact; Elvis Presley Friends Here On Tumblr. Did You Know That Rick Husky Who Organised This Man Of The Year Award For Elvis Presley’s Achievements For Contributing To Charitable Cause’s Became A Friend Of Elvis Presley And Went On To Become A Director And Producer Of Many Great 1970’s Action Tv Series including Police Woman Charlie’s Angels etc... And Elvis Presley’s Contacted Him I’n 1974 When He Wanted To Produce Is Shelved The New Gladiators Karate Action Movie That Sadly Elvis Presley But He Didn’t Go Ahead And Finish It As Threre is Some Rare Footage Of It On A DVD and The Internet. And Another Fact Its Rumoured That Bruce Lee In 1972 When He Made Enter The Dragon In Hollywood With Warner Brother Studios Wanted To Meet Elvis Presley And Say Hello As Bruce Lee Was An Elvis Presley Fan And He Had The Greatest Respect For Elvis Presley Through Elvis Presley’s Martial Arts Friend Chuck Norris And Ed Parker But It Was Never Confirmed. As They Sadly Never Met Not Like The FAKE Photoshop Photo That People Who Shall We Say Will Remain Nameless Saying It’s Elvis Presley Meeting Bruce Lee In 1970 Sorry My Dear Elvis Presley Friends Here On Tumblr It’s Not It’s FAKE.

I hardly talk about my personal life here but this is just something to get off of my chest. So I was walking my dog Koda around the neighborhood and it's freezing cold in Memphis but my dog doesn't mind the cold weather because he is a husky mix. As I let Koda smell around the open field and headed on home; this woman out of the blue curses me from across her house saying to get my dog out of her F-ing property if not she will call the cops on me??? I was confused and my fight or flight response kicked in telling her we're not on your yard or something like that and walked out. I told my parents what happened and they knew who I was talking about - they knew that woman is psychotic for years and her grown children hardly talked to her not to mention barely took all her dogs outside as they are confined in the woman's house and the open field is not a part of her property because it's part of a park that everybody walks by as well as deers live there too along with a ranch filled with cows!! My body was in total shock as to what happened but my mom does not hold back and will protect her children no matter what - the neighbor is absolutely afraid of my mom because they had a fight and my mom coming from the south side of Chicago always wins the battle whenever someone threatens her family. That's all I got to say so yeah that's my WTF story.....

Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis
The fact that a white girl from London managed to make an album that sounds exactly like something from the Motown or Stax catalogue is nothing short of amazing. The meticulous choice of songs, producers, and backing musicians is definitely a part of it, but none if it comes together without Dusty's beautiful husky voice. Son Of A Preacher Man was written so thoroughly in the style of Aretha Franklin that she cut her own version of it just a couple years later.
Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On
Oh how things change in only a few short years. The bright and bubbly psychedelic sounds of Sly Stone's Stand is long gone and in it's place is a dark brooding groove machine. The peace and love hippie movement was dead and Sly Stone was spending more and more time with the Black Panthers. Tensions in the band were high. The resulting album is tense and pessimistic with deep tight grooves that drive the songs. The bass lines are twangy and crunchy, the melodies phased out in favor of chaotic harmony and counterpoint. There's A Riot Goin' On is one of the greatest masterpieces of funk.
Beyoncé - s/t
Beyoncé Knowles was already a great musician, but her fifth album marked a change in the scope of her music. Every song has an accompanying video, which is neat and all but I'm here to review the music. Thankfully the music is very good. Beyoncé is fairy thematically tight keeping to an idea of beauty theough imperfection. This is explored through the lens of relationships mostly, the negative and positive emotions that can arise and how to deal with them. Its refreshingly human. A lot of the songs slowly expand over time into broody epics, and some fall into the very 2013 trend of triumphantly epic melodrama. Beyoncé is a great album and the start of an era in her career that, imo, would keep getting better.
The Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols
Vulgar, crude, idiotic, with no sense for good taste or a coherent political statement. Nevermind The Bollocks is a horrible album made by horrible people. It's also a fantastic album and a complete game changer for punk music. Johnny Rotten is a tasteless idiot who doesn't know what anarchy is, but he also plays loud obnoxious music that captured the imagination of other loud obnoxious teens. I think an appreciation for base and stupid things is very important, especially when when they have the sincere energy of Nevermind The Bollocks. And I realize that it isnt clear from the test of this review, but I do like this album.
Frank Ocean - Blonde
It's actually unbelievable that Frank Ocean followed up Channel Orange with an album that even remotely approaches its greatness. I could see it being a tossup for someone as to which one is better, but I'm personally on team Channel Orange so I think that ranking Blonde above it is a misstep. That said Blonde is an amazing neo soul masterpiece. It manages to keep the languid pace of its predecessors while bringing in some more psychedelic influence and a lot of songs use the slow pace to play around with a few ambling avant garde soundscapes. Also, and this is a weird thing to note but, Frank Ocean actually gets a really good verse outta Andre 3000. I love me some Outkast but Andre tends to phone it in on guest verses and he brings his whole ass to Solo (Reprise) and I think its partly because Ocean actually hands him a beat he can work with. Basically this is a man who commands respect even among his elders. People want to work with Frank Ocean and the results speak for themselves.
#500 album gauntlet#dusty springfield#sly and the family stone#beyoncé#sex pistols#frank ocean#sorry for the break ive been building gundams#and watching gundam#and then building more gundams

(wolf blues) we tease e with buying him some dog toys or balls and e huffs but in reality he uses the balls. getting him tired takes time, usually we and jerry are the ones to make him tired so he ironically plays with the ball we got him. but e still tackles both of us.
we know his tired bc his tongue is out and he's panting and laying on the ground, we make him a small water fountain and he always makes a mess with the water fountain so we put it outside. then he just snoozes away or is laying with us, we're always crushed by e after some encouraging.
also if we be like "hey lets order something " e decides to be in his wolf form for the rest of the day so when the take out gets the delivery guy is like "holy shit there's q big ass wolf" and if e starts growling they get so scared. if we order pizza we just throw a slice at him and he catches it, sometimes he doesn't catch them tho and we laugh. he sleeps on top of us and we have LOTS of air conditioners in graceland and they're always at the lowest temperature. it's sometimes freezing in there and the memphis guys are like "oh gosh is too cold" but we do it bc e in his wolf form is like "it's too hot help"
He does grumble at you the first time he sees you bought him toys but that same night you catch him playing with them and of course you don't say anything but keep buying toys and over time he will play with them in front of you and even play with you lol He's so happy to play but it takes up to two hours sometimes getting him to go to bed and of course there's zoomies around the house every night.
He flops on the ground wherever he is when he's tired so if we're not paying attention he'll sometimes almost trip us when he's napping and we don't see him.
He's a very protective puppy even though he knows we were going to order food and he doesn't need to protect us from the dang pizza guy lol. I can see him getting pizza sauce on his nose from sniffing our pizza and since he put his whole nose in it we just let him have it. He has the worst begging eyes too. We can't say no to him!
I picture him looking similar to a husky so because he has so much fur he's always hot! So yeah graceland is freezing but we don't mind because we love wearing layers and using multiple blankets

Great choice, @ash-omalley ♥
I love playing this game [what would you choose if all its granted to you it's one only option], so here goes mine, tho I won't be able to decide properly, you'll see.
Well, for me, I would consider "Power of My Love" by Elvis, from his 1969 album 'From Elvis In Memphis' because that's my favorite album of all of Elvis' and that song never fails to gives me shivers down the spine — not because of the lyrics, so to speak, but I can feel the power of Elvis' love for music in his deep husky voice and in the mesmerizing, intense melody, right in my bones. I would love to hear it on repeat until comes the time to my very last sigh (considering I could hear the song on repeat because once is never enough with that one for me).
But in the end, considering the situation, I would much probably go with "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley", not because I would look for redemption or anything, hearing gospel songs, but because the lyrics soothes my nerves... it makes me feel everything will be alright. It's one of my favorites, if not 'the' favorite, of what I call my 'comfort blanket songs'.
There's no easy answer when I talk about opting for one only Elvis song. Never. But those two were on top of my head. Considering I would die in six minutes I wouldn't have the time to scroll through my playlist to check the options [much less considering who the singer is and the massive options I'd have].
if you had 6 minutes left to live, what’s the last song you’d listen to

Cat Power Channels Bob Dylan at Carnegie Hall on Valentine’s Day
Cat Power – Carnegie Hall – February 14, 2024
The art of a cover is arguably a stamp of one’s personal perspective on a song, transcending it from its original version. Chan Marshall, best known by her stage name, Cat Power, has made an art of reenvisioning classics and contemporary songs into her own husky timbre. She’s released not one but three covers albums, 2000’s The Covers Record, 2008’s Jukebox, and 2022’s Covers. Late last fall she added to her canon of covers when she tackled Bob Dylan’s 1966 concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which was actually recorded at the Manchester Free Trade Hall but the bootleg recording was mislabeled. Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert is Marshall’s first ever live-album release and fittingly she supported the record bringing it to a sold-out Carnegie Hall on Valentine’s night.
As a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist crossed the hallowed stage of Carnegie Hall, Marshall joined the pair in an all-black pantsuit and Louboutin stilettos. Following faithfully to Dylan’s 1966 concert, the first half of the set was performed acoustic and switched halfway to electric, which famously had folk purists up in arms. There was a sweet hint of nervousness as Marshall sang the first lyrics of “She Belongs to Me,” but it was a far cry from her past demons with stage fright. Fans basked in the smoky delivery as the stage was dimly lit and floor lights illuminated on “Visions of Johanna,” casting long shadows over the singer. Marshall looked at ease, remarking that it felt like a dinner party with recognizable friends in the audience. The acoustic set highlighted her talent of making a song her own, imbuing vulnerability and notes that had the audience enraptured to a point where you could hear a pin drop.
When a full band joined for the electric half of the set, the rollicking turn brought back memories of the tour in support of 2006’s The Greatest when the Memphis Rhythm Band accompanied her. The singer-songwriter broke loose belting out “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” to cheers all the way from the rafters. Admitting to not enjoying being spotlit, she turned her thanks to all those in the hall who have supported her throughout the years. With the closing song, “Like a Rolling Stone,” everyone in the enamored crowd was up on their feet before being catapulted out into the New York City night. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

Sad Elvis songs let's go. I definitely didn't cry while thinking about this and listening to the songs again.
She Thinks I Still Care - I love this song soooo much. His deep voice just does something to me. He sounds so genuine while singing, really making me feel the longing and heartache. And um sorry but literally just the way he sings "Lord, I saw her and went to pieces" makes me cry on a regular basis. Deffo one of my all time fav Elvis songs as well!
You'll Think Of Me - Shanny, what an excellent choice, I'm actually *very* obsessed with this song rn. Like listening to it on repeat for a few days now. I also really love the huskiness in his voice. Plus "Well, in your warm and loving bed, you won't think of me no more" has me fighting tears as well!!!
Any Day Now - I love From Elvis In Memphis so much, everything about it, his voice is just *chefs kiss*. And this song is just so beautifully sad. Trying to hold onto someone who you know will leave you soon just tugs at my heart strings. And he really sells it!
Honorable mention: The Sound Of Your Cry
Thanks for the tag, Shanny!!❤️
Elvis Top Three - Sad Songs
I had a suggestion from a lovely anon for the Elvis Top Three questions, so this time we’re doing Top Three Sad Songs. What really gets you in your feelings? Gives you a good cathartic cry? I think a lot of the ones I was considering overlapped with my soothing songs. I’m not sure what that says about me lol, but here goes.
You’ll Think Of Me – This is just such a beautifully heartbreaking song. Knowing you can’t give someone what they deserve even though you love them and then reassuring them that they’ll find someone better than you…I do wonder if Elvis related to this on some level when singing it. I think he tried his best but also understood how difficult it could be to live in his world. His vocal performance is just gorgeous; I love the sort of huskiness from these recording sessions.
youtube
Make the World Go Away – Elvis’ voice in 68-71 just does something to me; it is so soulful. His performance on this, and the sentiment of the song, hits me so hard. When he sings “get it off, get it off, get it off my shoulder,” I can feel the emotion pouring out.
youtube
My Boy – This one feels very personal to me. I know this is about a failing relationship and when he says “If I stay, I stay because of you, my boy,” he means stay in the marriage, but when I listen to it, I think of it in the context of my own life. I have felt many times like my son is my whole reason for living. The “staying” for me is to keep living, to keep doing my best to make it through.
youtube
Anyone please join in! ❤️

2019 Top Games of the Week: Week 14
Happy Thanksgiving and a Happy Rivalry Week to everybody out there. The regular season is nearly over, I hope you had a good one. This week has a bunch of storylines ranging from Playoff struggles to last minute bowl pushes, in the middle of all of this are some of the best rivalry games this season.
Let’s break down the best games in the last full slate of the year.
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. #23 Iowa State 7-4 (5-3) at Kansas State 7-4 (4-4)
Farmageddon or whatever they’re calling it is an important final stepping stone for both Iowa State and Kansas State. The Cyclones have recently broken back into regular bowl eligibility and this year has continued the streak, but ISU haven’t exceeded expectations in any way. The Wildcats are having a nice first year under Chris Klieman and an 8-4 first season would wrap a nice bowl on the year. Last season Iowa State snapped the KSU’s 10 game winning streak in the 103 game series.
9. Louisville 7-4 (5-3) at Kentucky 6-5 (3-5)
The Governor’s Cup is on the line as Louisville and Kentucky attempt to close out the year on a high note. The Cardinals had a very nice rebound season and I think UL has successfully washed out the bitter aftertaste of Bobby Petrino. Now Louisville will try to wrest the Cup out of their rival’s hands. The Wildcats meanwhile have weathered 2019 despite losing a lot of talent from their previous breakout season. Bragging rights are on the line in the 32nd playing of this in-state tussle. Also, hilariously, this is the only ACC-SEC game to feature two teams with winning records this year.
8. Washington State 6-5 (3-5) at Washington 6-5 (3-5)
The Apple Cup is the PAC-12′s best end of season rivalry game this season. The Conference of Champions has also had a tough time getting an end of season matchup featuring two teams over .500. Washington and Washington State both have taken a step back from last year, but a win here will always end the season on a high note. The Huskies have won six in a row over their arch-rivals. It’s the 112th game in this long-time series.
7. Texas A&M 7-4 (4-3) at #2 LSU 11-0 (7-0)
The only thing standing between LSU and an undefeated regular season is rival Texas A&M. The Tigers are heavy favorites but the last year featured an incredible 7OT barn burner that featured the Aggies’ first win over Louisiana State since joining the SEC. It’s the 58th all-time meeting between both programs.
6. #7 Oklahoma 10-1 (7-1) at #21 Oklahoma State 8-3 (5-3)
Oklahoma State won’t be able to impact the Big 12 Championship Game, Oklahoma and Baylor are already locked in, but the Cowboys can knock their rivals out of the Playoff race with a satisfying win at home. OK State haven’t won in four years and won’t be favored here, but they came desperately close last season. It’s the 114th playing of Bedlam, the best of the Big 12 end of year rivalries.
5. #19 Cincinnati 10-1 (7-0) at #18 Memphis 10-1 (6-1)
This could very well be a preview for the AAC Championship Game. Cincinnati has already punched their ticket but the Bearcats have to travel to the West favorites. Memphis have looked much better than Cincinnati in the past month or two and should be favored, but the Tigers have a slim margin for error. A loss here would put Navy into the American CG over Memphis.
4. #12 Wisconsin 9-2 (6-2) at #8 Minnesota 10-1 (7-1)
The Big Ten West all comes down the this, the most played of all college football rivalries in the highest tier of the sport. Minnesota is playing for their first ever berth in the Big Ten Championship Game. Wisconsin is the usual suspect to win the West, but the Badgers enter as the underdogs. The Gophers have surprised everybody this season and are trying to attempt the impossible and crash the Playoff. Last year, Minnesota wrested Paul Bunyan’s Axe away from their rival for the first time since 2003. The winner here not only gets the Axe, but overall control of the all-time series. In the 128 games played, Minnesota and Wisconsin are all tied up 60-60-8.
3. #24 Virginia Tech 8-3 (5-2) at Virginia 8-3 (5-2)
The Commonwealth Cup will likely decide the ACC’s Orange Bowl bid. The victor here will win the Coastal Division outright and face Clemson in Charlotte. Virginia will have to exorcise a lot of demons to overcome their in-state rivals. Virginia Tech have won the past 15 contests, with the last coming in heartbreaking fashion. This will be the 101st game in the long running series.
2. #1 Ohio State 11-0 (8-0) at #13 Michigan 9-2 (6-2)
The 116th playing of The Game will have all sorts of intrigue going into it. The Ohio State war machine is firing on all cylinders and only needs to beat their archrivals to secure an undefeated regular season and virtually guarantee a spot in the Playoff. For all the good Jim Harbaugh has done for the Michigan program, his inability to beat the Buckeyes has driven fans up the wall. With Urban Meyer gone, there was a hope that the Wolverines could finally end the 7 year OSU streak. However, Ryan Day’s first squad looks as good (or even better) than any of the Meyer teams. This will be a daunting task for UM to overcome.
1. #5 Alabama 10-1 (6-1) at #15 Auburn 8-3 (4-3)
The Iron Bowl remains first among equals as the best game in college football rivalry weekend. Alabama’s Playoff hopes lay on the line, as the Crimson Tide find themselves uncharacteristically outside the top 4. Bama is on the bubble and has a lot to lose if they fall to archrival Auburn, the Tide are the only team to have made every college football Playoff so far. For the Tigers, a win here would be huge for a program seeing the gap between themselves and rivals Alabama, LSU, and Georgia widening. It would be a huge feather in the cap for Gus Malzahn, who is under increasing pressure to deliver wins against three of the best teams in football. It’s the 84th game in the most hating-est rivalry in college football.
-
Top 5 G5 Games of the Week
5. FIU 6-5 (3-4) at Marshall 7-4 (5-2)
Conference USA decided to hold their best games for the last couple of weeks. FIU looks to knock Marshall fully out of the East race.
4. Georgia State 7-4 (5-3) at Georgia Southern 6-5 (5-3)
Appalachian State has already wrapped up the Sun Belt’s East Division, but that doesn’t take much away from this rivalry game. It’s only the 6th all-time meeting between these GSU rivals, but they already seriously don’t like each other.
3. BYU 7-4 at San Diego State 8-3 (5-3)
This is a bragging rights game. BYU and San Diego State have old beef going back to the Mountain West days (albeit more of a basketball rivalry). The Cougars and Aztecs attempt to salvage a disappointing season with a big win over a severely disliked opponent.
2. Toledo 6-5 (3-4) at Central Michigan 7-4 (5-2)
If Central Michigan can put away a regressing Toledo, the Chippewas will secure the MAC West in their first year with Jim McElwain at the helm.
1. Southern Miss 7-4 (5-2) at Florida Atlantic 8-3 (6-1)
FAU enters rivalry week leading the East Division while Southern Miss is in a three-way tie for the West. There’s a lot at stake for both teams, the loser will very likely not make the conference championship game.

FCS Games of the Week
I’m gonna do a separate post for the FCS Playoff, so let’s talk Turkey.
2. Alabama State 5-5 (4-2) vs Prairie View A&M 5-5 (3-3)
The oldest of the HBCU classics, the 2019 Turkey Day Classic pits Alabama State and Prairie View A&M against each other. Neither team will make the SWAC Championship Game, this one is for the pageantry. The Turkey Day Classic has been played uninterrupted since 1924. Alabama State has won the last 6 Classics, but this is only the second time in that span that the Hornets are playing Prairie View A&M.
1. Grambling State 6-4 (4-2) vs Southern 7-4 (5-1)
The Greatest of the HBCU Classics, the Bayou Classic takes its rightful spot, deciding the SWAC West Division. The winner will play Alcorn State next week in the SWAC Championship Game. It’s the 72nd all-time meeting between these bitter rivals.

NCAA Men's Tournament: West Region Preview
NCAA Men’s Tournament: West Region Preview
The UConn Men’s basketball team is going dancing for the 2nd straight year after a 5-year gap. UConn has earned it’s highest seed since 2011 and was considered by the committee to be the 17th overall ranked team and #1 ranked 5-seed. While all of that is positive and to be in the NCAA Tournament is a goal every year, the committee certainly didn’t do UConn any favors putting them in the West…
