Okay, so, The Matsuri interlude was adorable and amazing but it also made me remember the stipulations that Suvi had for her during her stay at Grandma Wren’s. And it just dawned on me that they were to ensure The Man in Black couldn’t find her.

No going outside at night?!?! Don't step on a road?!?! Two things that are now so obviously connected to The Man in Black!! He's the Great Spirit her amulet was meant to hide her from!! He came to the cottage the day she'd stepped on the road to Toma!! He'd probably come to kill not just Ame but Suvi as well.

All of this is to say: what the fuck were Soft and Stone doing that drew so much of the Man in Black's ire that they thought he'd kidnap or kill Suvi if he got the chance?!?!?

One of the things that’s interesting to me about The Man in Black from The Wizard The Witch and The Wild One is how - compared to the rest of the spirits depicted - all of his imagery has to do with human civilization.

Obviously roads in Brennan’s description are made intentionally - different than a path, different than a trail, connecting lives in a more intentional way. The man in black is always shown to be humanoid. His ancient sword is described by him as “sharper than a spinster’s tongue and harder than a misers heart” a spinster and a miser are only concepts that make sense within the context of capital - a human creation.

In a show that is so specific with the dichotomy of the human realm and the spirit realm - it’s interesting to me that this supposedly ancient being kinda doesn’t fit into this wild one/human split.

This made me think of the Man in Black from The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One. I don't think it even matches his description, but I like the vibe. You should check out the podcast Worlds Beyond Number if you haven't, it has my four favorite professional role-players.

I have a crack theory with very little research about the Man in Black taking on a wizard namecloak: the Stranger. Which, although it is an appellation or title, it is technically an S-name.

When Suvi asked Yulia for books on the MiB in ep 21, she noted that "there were a lot of slips about the Stranger and the names you gave me, that look like they were already taken out."
