I, Benjamin Gaunt, am happy to bring you another (long awaited) Tale From the Swamplands! This week’s topic is... Paranoia Living down in a bunker, hiding from the Fold, foments a special brand of paranoia. But there's lots of flavors to be had! Be they walks alone at night, trauma rearing its ugly head, or authoritarian theocracies, it’s easy to get wigged out now and again! Our tale for the week is another weird and wild installment of Into the Mire!
Some two decades past, during the Emberglow Era, authoritarian control and civil unrest threatened to tear the city apart. All the while, the stock market fluctuated wildly - a morally mottled fruit ripe for the picking. One lonely clerk had bigger plans than stocks, fancy suits, and titles. On a night like any other, fate's hand would give Curtwell Steiner his golden opportunity. Was its form something beyond his wildest dreams? Or, even, nightmares? One thing was certain: after that night, he would never be the same again.
Learn more in this week's Tale From the Swamplands: Disconnection - B. Gaunt
It's been a bit! But I'm pumped to bring y'all my best offering yet.
Episodes from here on out will certainly not be weekly endeavors - but I'm planning on posting new episodes to finish out the season, as well as re-mastering older episodes to match this level of quality (I've learned a lot to say the least). Let me know what you think, or if there’s any other corner of the Swamplands you’d like to hear more about in the future! You can listen to the show here, on YouTube, Spotify, any podcast player, or the show’s website!

"One of the most popular features on WDIA is 'Tan Town Jamboree,' the first program introduced by Nat Williams…The South's first Negro disk jockey, Nat is considered by both white and Negro listeners as one of the best early-morning personalities on the air when he broadcasts his 'Tan Town Coffee Club' at 6:30." – The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN), June 20, 1954
Nathaniel "Nat" D. Williams became the first black radio announcer in Memphis when he began broadcasting for WDIA in 1948. (This was in addition to his work as a high school teacher at Booker T. Washington High School, a columnist for the Pittsburgh Courier, a journalist for the Memphis World, and Master of Ceremonies for Amateur Night at the Old Palace Theater.) Williams was so successful at WDIA that the station switched to all-black programming and became the city's top station. After a boost to 50,000 watts, Williams and other WDIA personalities were heard across the Mississippi Delta.

In Loving Memory - Lisa Marie Presley (1968-2023) Forever In Our Hearts
Tumblr media
How beautiful is a life so loved that the loss of it results in resounding sorrow felt across the nation? The mourning of an artist, a mother, a legacy that most have never met but whose presence helped us to understand our own.
Lisa Marie Presley, February 1, 1968 - January 12, 2023.
The daughter of Priscilla and Elvis Presley - a man she shared with an adoring world and who lived on through her work, her music, and her person - followed in her father’s footsteps, releasing three albums throughout her career. To Whom It May Concern released in 2003, So What in 2005, and Storm & Grace in 2012. She had the opportunity to sing with her father posthumously in 2018 with the reimagined duet Where No One Stands Alone.
A mother of four, Lisa Marie didn’t shy away from expressing the devastating grief of losing her son, penning an essay in August about life after loss in the hopes that it might help others grieving. Her openness and vulnerability a beautiful way to turn complex heartbreak into a meaningful discourse that will resonate and support others for years to come.
Her final days were spent celebrating her dad: a visit to Graceland for what would have been his 88th birthday and attendance at the Golden Globes to see Austin Butler, who portrayed Elvis in the film, win Best Actor (Drama Motion Picture).
Though gone far too soon, if it may be of any comfort, I like to think Elvis and her son were waiting for her with open arms, and she’s with them once again.
Sending love and thoughts to the family and to everyone who needs them right now.

Salute the Love Power Soldier, Wallace Redd
Wallace was the epitome of a black man, from street vending to The Love Power Show. The path created by Wallace Redd (Sanyika Babatunji) is a worthy path that many of his people must review. A man who never gave up, he was a leader, team player, a wise
“When I first met Wallace, I didn’t know him by that name. The person I met was Sanyika Babatunji. A conscious brother- entrepreneur who taught me how to hustle. He was vocal about the plight of black people, (1990) when I met, until his end. We always talked a long time on the phone, because we had so much to talk about….” – Brother Adimu Ali. Wallace Redd’s impact on his society was…

On My Sunday Walk
I was listening to the 1st Church of Rock on WEVL on my walk today. It was a special episode that featured heavy songs of the 1960s prior to the release of Black Sabbath’s first album which is arguably the first heavy metal album. Amongst the tunes played was “The Dark Lord” by Sam Gopal fronted by the legendary Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead fame. The tune is definitely Tolkien inspired & if you have never heard it, you should track it down on your favorite audio streaming service.

"Calls on the helpline were up almost 60 percent in 2023 from the year before. Demand has increased so much that until the small non-profit expanded their team of interventionists recently, they had a wait-list for follow-up services.
In a signal of their growing reach, Churchill says, they’ve been getting more inquiries from people like district attorneys and school professionals seeking input."
One of Parents for Peace’s most powerful resources, Churchill says, are former extremists themselves who work as what are called peer-exit specialists to advise others on life afterwards.
“Remember that former extremists have a credible voice, more than anyone,” Churchill says." - WKNO FM 91.1 Memphis

I Watched "My Son Brandon Passed Away" on YouTube
Rickey Smiley has always been and still is a funny man. I try and listen to his show in the morning when I am driving to some of my appointments. However, seeing him in a state like this, stopped me for a second, as I reflected on a time when our family received news about my brother. While it is not funny at all but around 2 minutes into the video he says “I got my keys and took a bath” I felt…
