I'm still curious about where those dungeon walls came from -- one of the few commercial products at this time, or made by a prop master, or brought from a crew member's own home game? I assume they were placed in the scene to give the audience a visual cue about the game, which most of us played in our imaginations with only the aid of graph paper maps.

Robert MacNaughton who played older brother Michael has given several interviews mentioning some of the background on D&D in ET, including one for Orange Coast Magazine, April 1986 ("Wunderkinds" by Sheldon Craig), and one for Yahoo Entertainment, August 11, 2017 ("'E.T.' at 35" by Gwynne Watkins).

He told Spielberg during their first meeting/audition that he spent his free time riding a bike and playing D&D, which the director then told him were both in the script, possibly helping to land him the role.

"One of the auditions was at Harrison Ford’s house because he and Melissa Mathison, who wrote the script, were together, and his kids Ben and Willard played Dungeons & Dragons. So one of the auditions was at Harrison Ford’s house with all of us playing Dungeons & Dragons." (Yahoo, 2017)

In an earlier version of the script: "The last scene was going to be all of us playing Dungeons & Dragons again, except this time, Elliott’s the dungeon master. Because he was the one that found E.T., he sort of got in with the group."

M&Ms wasn't the only product that missed a chance at some huge publicity: "But it was funny because the script was top secret so [the producers] sent just a few pages of the script to the creator of Dungeons & Dragons. And he said, I absolutely will not allow the name D&D to be used because they’re gambling on the game. I guess he misunderstood; there was a script note that we had money for pizza on the table, and he thought we were gambling on Dungeons & Dragons."

That seems to explain the generic terms like "melee points" in the final script and the lack of visible rule books on the table.

The D&D scene from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982.  I never used any 3D terrain back then or even any flat tiles or grid mats, so I always wondered whether this was just a clumsy attempt at depicting the game or if it accurately reflected how everyone played differently in different groups.

Now I wonder what those spray cans are doing on the table.  If they’ve been huffing Raid then Mom was more negligent than I remember.

(Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died” plays in the background.  Why do they request pizza toppings from Elliott if the car is on the way?  Is Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow supposed to be part of their game?)
