Shot In The Dark: Jack Hodgson x Reader

The Backseat - You and Jack have an unusual meet cute.

Gaelic (NSFW) - Sometimes Jack slips into Gaelic when he’s fucking you.

Look After You - Jack takes care of you during a long case.

When the gun shots ring out, Jack’s heart stops. He can’t think, he can’t breathe. The only thing he can do is stay right where he is because he can’t tell where the shots are coming from, he doesn’t know if you’re in the line of fire.

“Liz?” He calls out and silence greets him.

His mouth goes dry and he imagines you lying there on the opposite side of the car, trembling, bleeding.

“Liz?” He tries again, louder this time and still there’s nothing.

The blood rushes in his ears, his heart pounds. He can’t stand the thought of you out there injured, helpless, dying. The muscles in his body coil, the adrenaline rushing through his synapses as he gets ready to move, to bolt, to rescue.

And that’s when he hears it, the sound of a boot on gravel, the light crunch underfoot and he realises it’s him that’s in danger. There isn’t enough time to react, he sees the gun and he kicks himself because whilst he was worrying about you, he should have been listening for the other clues.

His life flashes before his eyes. The day you met, heavily pregnant on a beach, carrying your sister’s baby. First kiss, underneath the mistletoe at the Lyle. First time, tangled up in your sheets, fingers running through your hair as he loved you like he has never loved anybody else.

That’s his regret when he stares down the barrel of that gun. That there won’t be anymore time together because six months with you, it’s not enough, not really.

He hears the click of the baton and then the swish, the crack of bone erupts through the air and the gunman screams as the weapon tumbles out of his hand. You follow up with a blow to the leg, shattering the assailant’s knee cap as Jack kicks the weapon out of reach.

“You’re nicked.” You snarl, yanking the gunman’s arms behind his back and securing his wrists with zipties. He spits at you and you slap him across the back of the head with your palm of your hand. “Fucking behave.”

It’s in that moment that Jack realises he couldn’t love you anymore than he does. You look like an avenging angel, beautiful, ferocious, restrained. Anyone else would be beating the shit out the guy about now for what he’s just pulled but you, you’re entirely in control.

You stay that way until the cavalry arrives, until they take the gunman into custody and there’s just you and him leaning against his Jeep, watching as fresh team of forensics officers flood the area.

“You’re a rock star you know that?” He says, his shoulder bumping lightly against yours. “An absolute hero, he had me dead to rights…”

“Don’t…” You say cutting him off and it takes him a minute to realise that you’re shaking. “I thought I was going to lose you,  I thought…”

He knows exactly what you thought because he’d thought it too.

“Oh Lizzie, my love.” He murmurs as he wraps his arms around you, gathering you up close.

You don’t do this, PDA during work. The closest you get is usually a quick shoulder squeeze but in this moment professionalism escapes out the window and you hold onto him like you never want to let him go.

“I’m here.” He reassures you, his lips brushing over your hair line. “You’ve got me right here.”

I have a real soft spot for bbc crime dramas. every year i spend a few weeks being insane about silent witness then the week it ends i forget about it until the next series and repeat. and I have never felt so normal about an interest. same with whatever other dramas.
