Gender Expectations in Kirigakure

The role of women in Kirigakure

Generally speaking, it used to be rather uncommon for women to become kunoichi. One of the women who did was Ameyuri Ringo, who quickly became an idol to many young girls in her time. The idea of a woman swordsman was ridiculous - yet she fought her way up to the top. The shinobi affilitation was a very men-oriented field and those women who did became fully fledged shinobi were battle hardened and didn't take shit from anyone.

However, it was very common for women to be part of the workforce, since many citizens are on the poorer side, women from higher ranked families being the exception. The most common jobs taken on by women used to be rice and fruit farmers, seamstresses or business (co-)owners.

This has changed, however, once the fifth mizukage, Mei Terumi, rose to power. She encouraged young women and girls to fight for their dreams and become shinobi as well.

Women of the middle and higher classes are expected to take care of themselves, look pretty and be gracious, elegant and soft-spoken. Arranged marriages were nothing uncommon, often leaving the women with no choice in the matter.

Men's role in Kirigakure

Men are expected to be hard workers, providers for the family, but the image of the ideal man does differ from other cultures. Men in Kirigakure are rather comfortable in their femininity and it is not uncommon for men to wear makeup, do skincare and sleep with silken bonnets to take care of their hair. This often leads to Kiri men being seen as effeminate or flamboyant.

The exception to this are Kiri fishermen and sailors, who have adopted a more 'westernized' view of masculinity. Often foul mouthed and abrasive, they have formed their own subculture of 'new masculinity'.

Gender outside of woman and man

It is not uncommon for youngsters and teens in Kirigakure to reject the idea of being either a woman or a man, however it does lead to scrutiny and condemnation of Kirigakure's older population. People assigned female at birth are more often scruitinized than people assigned male at birth.

The beauty ideals in Kirigakure

Fair, pale skin Fair skin is seen as a sign of wealth and beauty in Kirigakure and a very desirable trait to many people. Skin bleaching creams are widely available and there are many problems with colorism in Kirigakure.

Long, luscious hair Another sign of wealth, long, open hair is seen as the beauty ideal because it means not having to work a tedious job where long hair would be seen as tedious.

Brown eyes In a country where people with kekkei genkai were frequently hunted down and killed, it is to be expected that anyone with a rare or unnatural eye color would automatically be seen as a freak, leading to brown eyes being the beauty ideal in Kirigakure.

A plump, well fed looking body This is pretty much self explanatory, as more plump bodies are seen as a sign of being well fed and able to afford leisure time.

Let me present a (big) age gap pairing that’s appropriate imo since y’all talking bout it.

Tomoe x mei Terumi- hear me out:

Kpz mentioned that tomoe would be interested in her technically speaking + it’s canon that mei is desperately looking for a husband

I tried to do some math on their age gap and since I’m assuming that tomoe is around danzos age, who was still alive during meis late 20s, tomoes and meis age gap would be around 30 years 🙂

They’re both consenting adults who didn’t know each other when mei was younger so even though the thought of this might be something some have to get used to, it shouldn’t be problematic

I hc that tomoe keeps his young spirit and cool personality regardless of him growing older and I can def see them getting along and being quite flirtatious

Tomoe would also still be very attractive since he’d keep up his silver, middle aged, muscular physique with the help of this jutsu and I’m convinced that middle aged men are also meis type she was kinda seductive around ao js

So idk maybe they’d get to know each other during the shinobi alliance and once they come to the realization that tomoe messed around enough and is ready to settle down and that mei wants nothing more than to get married to a qualified classy strong shinobi they start going out???

The only thing that bothers me about age gaps is the proximity to the younger one in their youth, which in this case, wouldn’t be an issue.

But Tomoe also likes guys and he’s poly. So throw in Ao and you have a deal. Two mist sugar babies/lovers in one shop 🤣

Message from Mun: Since I don't know how many of these I will get, I'll introduce y'all to my very first OC ever!

Okay, I dunno how many of you are familiar with the anime/manga Naruto, but that thing was my childhood and it holds a great place in my heart, for it is a show that got me through my darkest times, so it's only natural that lil ol' me decided to make her own original character for writing stories with her favorite Naruto characters, this OC being my longest active RP character for over 10 years (I created her back when I was only 12 years old, so this year will mark the 11th anniversary since I own this OC).

So, without further ado, I introduce you all to my Naruto OC... 猫好き 寂 (romaji: Nekosuki Sabi), also known as うちは寂 (romaji: Uchiha Sabi) (after marriage)! A few information on her: She's a former Konohagakure Chunnin ninja of the defunct Nekosuki clan (she's actually the last survivor of the clan, as the clan got wiped out in the Uchiha genocide, since they were directly affiliated to the Uchihas as a former enslaved clan, and thus lived within their community, alongside them).

Sabi left the Leaf Village after her family's and the Uchihas massacre at the hand of her former boyfriend, Uchiha Itachi, and spent most of her teen years in solitude and on the run, in search for the afro mentioned wanted criminal. She knew that Itachi wasn't a bad person, she felt it in her bones that there wasn't something right about the whole reasoning behind the massacre and she wanted to know the truth directly from Itachi himself. So, over the years Sabi trained harder in order to become stronger and be capable to face and fight the man she still loved even now, in the eventuality that he was indeed 'corrupted by evil' and she had to kill him. Luckily, things went in her favor and her gut instinct turned to be right. She got reunited with Itachi, learnt the truth and decided to remain by his side no matter what, even if the path he was walking now wasn't the most honorable of them all.

They married and went on to have two beautiful daughters, but sadly, Itachi died 2 years into their marriage (who has seen the anime/read the manga will know what's up his death), so she was left to be all alone yet again by fate (it's like a predestined omen since the kanji of her name means "silence" and it's commonly used in the word for 'loneliness'), but at least now she had her two daughters to take care of. So, she is currently an independent single-mother, living a peaceful civil life in a random small village near the borders of the Land of Fire, raising her two daughters and trying to live a peaceful life away from the sorrowful and unfair existence of the Shinobis.

A few infos on her appearance: Sabi is a tall (172 cm), slim and beautiful woman, with long chestnut-brown hair reaching her lower back, dark brown eyes that have a feline shape and air to them, a generally pretty and attractive face structure (similar to Tsunade's and Mei Terumi's, for reference) and natural generous curves (similarly to Hinata's), all of these being general characteristics of her clan's women (one of the reasons that determined the Uchiha to want to enslave and own this specific clan).

okay I'm being silly just a few hermits and what naruto clan I think they'd be part of if they were in that universe (plus some explanations bc. non nart moots)

Etho would obv be a Hatake. the only two known members are Kakashi, and his father, Sakumo. they're known for their silver hair and white chakra blade (that Kakashi breaks). Etho's got silver hair and looks like Kakashi I mean what do you expect.

Pearl would be a Yuhi. again, very few known members, being Kurenai, her father, Shinku, and her daughter, Mirai. this one's based on the Pearl plush because her eyes resemble the Yuhi red eyes (also just as a small thing, Kurenai and Shinku's names both mean 'deep red'. their eyes are two shades of red, plus Kurenai has red lipstick. 5am Pearl skin, do you hear me.)

Stress would be an Uzumaki. there are a few named Uzumakis, being Naruto, his mother, Kushina, Mito, Karin, and Nagato. (all the females have more pinkish red hair, while Nagato, the only male, excluding Naruto, has more base red hair.) they're known for their insane healing abilities. so not only do I think Stress would fit in as a healer, the whole pink/red hair just suits her <3

now here me out. either, Uchiha Tango (which doesn't quite fit. Uchiha are known for their fire jutsu, but their hair is mostly black with a blue tint) or Terumi Tango (we only know Mei Terumi, but she has both, lava release and boil release, and I just think that heat/acidity is very Tango coded) my first thought was Terumi before I remembered Uchiha also have flames <3 also the colour of Mei's hair is more Tango than the Uchiha blue.

and honestly. Impulse and False are perfect for that imo.

firstly, both their hair colours are found within the Senju clan (in Hashirama and Tsunade respectively). I already thought about Impulse being similar to a character with no mentioned clan, being Yamato. (the reason that's even remotely relevant is because Yamato has the same wood release as Hashirama (but not nearly as strong) and people speculate he may have Senju blood in him that made him compatible (because every other test subject died but him.))

Hashirama's wife was Mito, and he had at least one kid with her. so beyond that line, kids after that would have INSANE healing abilities, bc. Uzumaki. and hundred healings. so I propose False being somewhere in that family, after Hashirama and Mito, so she'd be part Uzumaki and have those healing abilities.

Impulse would be somewhere along the line of 'the Senju split up and he was born into "another clan" to hide the strength of the Senju'. (to explain a little bit, an example: people had come to form theories that the Hatake developed from specifically Tobirama Senju, since those three characters all have silver hair. but they changed the last name to split this line from the Senju. there's almost no mention, no history, and no special characteristics of those from the Hatake clan. so it makes sense for them to have descended from some other clan. again, this is only a theory.)

A test of the will of the heart. Mei already hopes the tides go one way, but as Akawarai had wisely mentioned, Naruto would make any young girl very happy. Blessed be the one that becomes the keeper of his heart. And what felt more like a punishment proved itself to be a true test of fate, the one in regard to the heart proving more challenging than any stamina challenge or speed challenge to feat through. This thought alone is what soothed what could have been a heartache, knowing that in the years of Naruto’s ongoing life he will always be the bringer of happiness to someone. ♡

Mei matches her gaze with the elder swordsman, warmed by his recent quip of making light of some statements himself; it seems a bit of her had rubbed off on him throughout his years of serving by her side as well! In the wider sense of truth, there was no one’s devotion as matched as Naruto’s and Mei Terumi’s. Akawarai already knew this very much. Matchmaking was surely not far from his reach ...

“I believe in Naruto. I know he will do only what is best for his heart.” In her gentle contemplation, she quells the fear of Ao, for she knows Naruto hasn’t wronged her and Kirigakure yet. “Trust.” She had picked up on some quips of Naruto herself, lately, her smile making a personal home on her face for she knows everything will be okay. It always turns out that way. ‘Believe it!’ Her layered hand on top of Ao’s only hopes to pass on some of that optimism he was always so contagious for.

And with meditation absorbed in the depths of her inner being awakens her vision back to Akawarai, she’s met in time with the most beautiful scroll to have existed. The one that bears the existence of life of her precious Naruto. Officiating that he was here, in Kiragakure, he always was. She has never picked up her brush faster than now.

“You’ve done this nation a great service,” Words once bestowed to her great elder swordsman once when young Naruto was found at door’s death once upon a time ago, but she was far from finished with his council, “And you will continue to do so.” Her hand grip on his is latching. A woman her age should already know what is inevitable one day, but she is just not ready for that day yet, allowing her hand squeeze to selfishly insist on his eternal stay otherwise. Even if her smile tries to portray otherwise.

‘Naruto is Kirigakure’s future.’ This much was already predicted in the stars the moment they’ve first layed their eyes on the young Uzumaki. And they’ve yet to be proven wrong.

Akawarai's eyes narrowed momentarily. The man was nothing if not observant. He had a keen eye for noticing and reading beyond the words and actions. It was why he had been put in charge of finding the best of Kiri's newest generations. He could cut through the walls that often stopped so many others. So he could see there was more to Mei's reaction than most. The elder swordsman then drummed his fingers along the top of the cane again. "Matchmaking is a little hobby of mine." He said without one hint of sarcasm or jest. However, he quickly moved on. "You're right that there is little that can change what the heart yearns for. But I gave Jiraiya that task for a reason." A test. If Jiraiya could not break Naruto's driven affection for Mei in three years? Either the toad sage had lost his touch or the devotion was just that strong. "Lord Akawarai. Surely this whole...thing is a bit too much. Trying to manipulate or deter Naruto..." Ao starts. Akawarai snorts before tilting his head. "I am merely doing what is best for Kiri and its future. Trust in that if anything, Ao." He looked back to Mei and reached to adjust his haori. "I managed to track down people from his life before all of this. Namely the people he encountered while fighting Zabuza. Found out a few things. Did you know they named a bridge after him? Anyway, I've hired the master carpenter. Tazuna. He is going to construct a grand gift to Naruto with help from others." Akawarai smiled a coy smile as he produced a scroll. "This scroll, for you to seal and sign, is an official declaration instating the Uzumaki Clan as an official Noble Clan of Kirigakure. Support from other clans is inside. The last of my gifts to him and in a way...to you." Akawarai wasn't getting any younger and his health had been in decline for the past year - he knew his time was coming sooner or later. It was becoming apparent that he was preparing things for after his death. He was giving his final gifts to the boy he turned into a man - a trained and dangerous man. The Uzumaki Clan being instated as a Noble Clan of Kirigakure meant there were certain protections and provisions given to them. It made Naruto a very protected individual politically within Kirigakure - something that would no doubt not go over well with some. But it was all for a future that must come to pass. Akawarai relaxes his stance once the scroll was taken.

Chapter 10, Bonds of Steel, could be read as a short one shot if you want the meat of the story. Gaara and Chojuro are rescued by a gilled swordsman. Kisame recalls how he encountered Hiramekarei and gave it to Chojuro in a moment of need. ⚠️WARNING ⚠️ for non-graphic mentions of rape.

Chapter 9 - Clouded Judgment

Ao startled awake. He activated his uncovered Byakugan, scanning the mansion. He caught glimpse of the unique signatures of Hiramekarei and Gaara leaving the building. He felt the Mizukage stir beside him.

“Is everything okay?” Mei mumbled sleepily.

“I think so. Chojuro and Lord Gaara are off somewhere at this time of night. What could they possibly be up to?”

“Don’t even think of telling me what time it is,” Mei warned, “Or else. Let them be.”

Ao didn’t wish to be threatened any further. He settled back down in bed, wrapping an arm around Mei’s soft and warm waist. His strong chest pressed to her back and she shifted back against him. He growled in arousal, pressing soft kisses against her neck.

“Let me sleep,” she groaned.

Ao kissed her neck once more in apology and inhaled deeply, enjoying her warm scent.

Chapter 10 - Bonds of Steel

"I think that's how I found you this time," Kisame continued. "Samehada was drawn to Hiramekarei's distress. It's not the first time it's happened with these two swords."

Chojuro's eyebrows raised in earnest. He longed to hear more. "I hope you'll tell me more, but we have to do something about Gaara."

He looked down at the Kazekage pressed against his side. Gaara shuddered violently, his arms wrapped tightly around his chest trying to keep warm.

Kisame could feel Samahada rustle against his back. No doubt, she was hungry for the immense chakra reserves the Jinchuriki possessed. He was so weak. It would be so easy to take him now.

there's not really a gentle way to preface this, so i'll just say it bluntly: i'm a childhood sexual abuse survivor, and i get uncomfy, to say the least, seeing a thirty-something year old adult fetishize and sexually harass a teenager, whether it's fictional or not. i put "mei stans" in my DNF in order to avoid having to deal with people who might downplay or ignore that aspect of her character. just a way of protecting my mental well-being
