Great BreakDown of a February Olivia Plath Interview

Notes:

Olivia grew up believing that California was an evil place.

The interviewer pointed out that the show started with the older Plath children wanting to move away from the strict religious upbringing but now it seems that only Olivia is still wanting that distance. Olivia specifically notes that Moriah mostly dresses and eats different rather digging deep into family dysfunction and other more meaningful beliefs.

Olivia watched the first 3 seasons and stopped at season 4 because she felt that was a dark time and did not stand by some of her actions. It would have been a hard rewatch for her.

Olivia realized she was dissatisfied with life at age 14 or 15 but did not know why. She then realized she had no deep emotional connections. Around that time, she cut her hair to her shoulders and began wearing eyeliner (which was a no-no in her home). At 16 or 17, she apologized to her father and the church via a spoken letter.

Olivia met Ethan at a family conference. Years later, Ethan wrote a letter to Olivia's father. Olivia's father then called Kim (note: not Barry!) to discuss. The two families agreed that Ethan and Olivia could talk on Skype for one hour every three months.

Olivia has been dating! It is hard for her to get past the first date. She has been struggling with shame due to growing up in purity culture.

In regards to the statement Ethan made about how Olivia should be making 3 meals a day, more was said but cut out due to TLC avoiding politics. Olivia now asks men right off the bat if they cook.

The interviewer was confused when first watch the show. He did not understand why such a "pure" family would want reality tv fame. He then asked how Ethan and Olivia were approached with the idea.

Kim invited TLC to film Olivia and Ethan's wedding without asking because she knew Olivia would say no. It was not shown on the show, because to release, it required Ethan and Olivia's consent too. Ethan and Olivia then made a list of requirements to join the TV show. At this time, Olivia and Ethan could not see the siblings. In order to do the show, seeing the kids was added to the list.

Olivia will be in Season 6. She wants viewers to see what happens when someone actually walks away from the fundie lifestyle.

Olivia loves the TLC crew.

Olivia talks about the initial separation she had with Ethan. Ethan agreed they could live in 3 different places in 3 years.

Ethan agreed to marriage counseling during the first separation. He went to three sessions and then quit.

Olivia said Ethan said if his hypothetical son came out as gay, he would disown him. Olivia is strongly opposed to that.

Ethan tried to get her back during the divorce process but Olivia was not interested. They did not have any relationship at this point.

The Plaths allegedly had a party when they found out about the divorce.

Ethan is still very close with Nathan Meggs, Olivia's brother. Ethan heavily leaned on Nathan during the divorce, which affect Olivia's relationship with her brother.

Olivia still has a relationship with Ethan's extended family in Minnesota.

Olivia is willing to have a conversation with some Plaths to connect the storylines. Olivia said, "if this turns into a circus, I'm walking away" (quoting Moriah's song about her lol).

Olivia said WTP was not producer driven, rather "cast-members" drove the narratives of each season.

Olivia said 2023 was a tough year. In March, she split from Ethan. In May, her younger brother died unexpectedly and she had to see the Meggs family with whom she's estranged. In this February 2024 interview, she says she now has peace.

Olivia had not seen her family of origin in years, specifically her parents. Her parents have blocked her and all other siblings who have left the fold. She has not been able to talk to her youngest siblings, even her brother who died.

Lydia Meggs helped Olivia through their brother's death and funeral.

She is looking for a man who is okay for it to not be a forever thing.

Comic books that you should read!!! Yes you!!! Right now!!!

These are comics I really enjoy! I'm trying to stick to slightly more obscure comics, preferably stuff that's a little newer, but that's by no means a rule! This is my list baby, I make the rules!

#1: Local Man (Image Comics, 2023)

Local Man follows Jack Xaver, who was once the superhero Crossjack before being unceremoniously kicked out of his team and legally barred from any vigilante activity. Moving back in with his parents in his destitute former hometown, Jack starts to unravel a conspiracy that has ties to both his old team and his old town.

It rules! It's funny and heartfelt and thrilling and if it were a TV show you'd never stop hearing about it. It's also one of the few modern original Image series that actually takes place in the "Image Universe", so it's packed with references to characters like Shadowhawk. You don't need to know all these guys to enjoy the comic by any means, but it's fun for long-time fans.

Most of all, I'm a fan of the basic conceit of this comic: it looks at The Dark Age of Comic Books with the same reverent-yet-critical eye that so many other comics used on the golden and silver ages. I think that rules! A lot of this stuff deserves reappraisal!

#2: The Wrong Earth (Ahoy Comics, 2018)

The concept for this is pretty simple: what if Adam West's Batman got sent to the world of the Nolan trilogy, and Christian Bale's Batman got sent to the world of the 1966 TV show?

They hit all the dramatic and comedic beats you could imagine coming from this premise, and a few you probably couldn't think of. It's not just a one-dimensional parody, though: really sharp writing and an engaging mystery elevate what could easily be, like, a Dorkly video into something special. Which is to say: if you think this premise sounds good you'll love this comic, and if you think it sounds stupid you'll probably still like this comic.

There are some cool character designs here, but my favorite is the villain in both universes:

His name is Number One, and he's a crime boss with an egomania/numbers gimmick. (Sorry for the compressed jpegs)

I imagine "design an original 1960s villain, and then design his edgy 2000s reboot version" would be a difficult prompt for an artist, but Jamal Igle knocks that shit outta the park. Number One really feels like he could fit into Batman's rogues gallery, but he's not a riff on anyone in particular- he's kind of like all of them. The "1"-shaped scar is an especially great touch.

#3: Ice Cream Man (Image Comics, 2018)

Hey, another from Image Comics! And it's my favorite genre, too: horror anthology. If the pic I chose didn't tip you off, this one gets SPOOKAY! The basic premise is that every issue is a one-shot that features a character going through some kind of horrible misfortune. Tying all these tales of woe together is the enigmatic Ice Cream Man, who seems to be somehow torturing all these humans for his own amusement. We eventually learn that he's an evil god-type thing named Riccardus, and he has a good counterpart who's trying to stop him- all the lore stuff is a little vague, but that doesn't mean it's not interesting! The art style used by artist Martin Morazzo is almost uncanny-valley, it reminds me of The Shivering Truth.

Some of the "horror" in this comic is really personal and upsetting, by the way- the one about dementia made me cry. Actually, a lot of these made me cry. Full on snotty gasp-sobbing. 10/10. Riccardus has real sexyman potential if the freaks on this site would ever read something besides fuckin Wayne Family Adventures.

#4: Wayne Family Adventures (DC/Webtoon, 2021)

What? It's cute, fuck you. "eeuuuhhh it's out of character" you sound like a dweeb man

#5: Eight Billion Genies (Image Comics, 2021)

Just like The Wrong Earth, this has a killer elevator pitch: what if every single person on Earth got exactly one wish, all at the same time? Also like The Wrong Earth, it takes it's premise in every angle you can think of- there's wish trading, wish stealing, cities that are kept safe from the chaos of the outside world but you have to give the city government your wish to get in, you name it. No wonder Amazon bought the rights. Keep an eye out for that movie/series, I guess.

Ok, I need some non-image comics.

#6: Giant Days (Boom! Studios, 2015)

Anime fans, this one's for you: you know all those series you love about groups of cute girls just going through their daily lives? Well imagine if those cute girls were over eightee- hey wait where are you going come back

Giant Days is a slice-of-life story about three young women facing the challenges of college life. Apparently it's a spin-off of a webcomic with like 15 years of strips, but I don't care about all that and neither should you! It's a little like gilmore girls in terms of tone. The dialogue is snappy, all the characters play off each other in ways that's fun to see, and there's this 7 foot tall Australian rower chick who's completely obsessed with her reedy loser boyfriend. It's just comforting. It's like a big plate of mashed potatoes, this comic.

Hey, speaking of slice-of-life:

#7: Megg, Mogg and Owl (Indie/Fantagraphics, 2013ish)

This has the honor of being the only comic on this list that's been adapted to another type of media, in the form of a segment on Justin Roiland's weird kinda-shitty Hulu halloween special. Not much of an honor, I guess.

Anyways! MM&O is about a group of "friends" who live together in drug-addled squalor. Megg is a chronically depressed witch just waiting to die. Mogg, Megg's boyfriend, is a talking cat who just wants to keep the degenerate lifestyle they've built for themselves stable, and Owl is a neurotic sex addict who wants to make something of himself but doesn't want to lose his only companions, and Werewolf Jones is a drug-dealing sociopath. It's like Peep Show! I absolutely love this comic, I reread it constantly, but I'm having a hard time pitching it.

If Giant Days is a plate of mashed potatoes this is like... a gas station hot dog eaten over a storm drain or something. Still kind of comforting, just in a different way. Let's cleanse our palette with some capeshit.

#8: Planetary (Wildstorm/DC, 1998)

Planetary rocks. We follow an amnesiac immortal named Elias Snow as he travels the globe with his top-secret Planetary Investigations team to uncover the secrets of the Wildstorm universe. Think of it like... The X-Files crossed with The Venture Brothers. X-Files in that they investigate weirdo mysteries, Venture Brothers in that every genre of speculative fiction- from Doc Savage-style pulp heroes to Kaiju to James Bond superspies- all exist, or existed, in some form.

Also on the team besides Snow are The Drummer (who has some kind of information-based power I never really understood) and Jakita Wagner, the super-strong ADHD daughter of a Tarzan expy. It's hard to do it justice in a post like this, buy a copy! Or pirate it, if you don't want to give Warren Ellis any money!

#9: Bad Enders (Indie, 2020)

Bad Enders is a shonen pastiche with all the humor and charm you could expect from a @beanytuesday joint. It's great! It follows a burnt-out twentysomething who once had ambitions of becoming a demon hunter, but has since resigned himself to a life of filling out excel spreadsheets. Beanytuesday has stated there probably won't be any more Bad Enders content, but he has another comic called GUE (https://beanytuesday.tumblr.com/tagged/gue/chrono) that takes place in the same universe.

#10: G-Man (Image Comics, 2009)

Anyways, this was my jam back in like 3rd grade and you know what? It holds up. When they say "all-ages" they fuckin mean all ages, I'm a grown man and I can enjoy this.

The story of this entry is that I wanted to end on 10 instead of 9.

The story of this comic is that a kid named Mikey G gets his hands on a magic blanket that allows him to fly, but his brother ALSO uses the magic blanket to fly with and they become, like, rivals, but this other kid can also fly and he starts fucking with them... better than it sounds. There's also this crazy arc later in the series where they have a baby brother but- hold on, I'll show you

Megan heads inside too, and she runs into Tess in the hallway. "Hey you," she says, smiling cautiously. "Hey." Tess says, a weak smile on her face. Megan hesitates for a second before Tess pulls her into an embrace, stroking her hair as Megan sighs. "Are we okay, Tessie?" She asks quietly. "I think so. You and Iseul talked last night?" Tess asks hesitantly. "Yeah, we talked about a lot of stuff and decided to put our romantic past fully behind us, for good this time. Plus I told her I couldn't choose her over you and our kids just because of some past feelings and she understands." Megan admits and Tess nods. "I'm so glad Meggs, because I love you so much and I want to be with you despite everything. I'm not going to lie, last week I considered us separating for a while but didn't because of Emmy." She says and Megan nods, her heart racing. "I don't blame you for that Tessie. I just hope I can get your trust back even if it might take some time." She says and Tess nods, her face a bit less tense and her shoulders lighter. "You can, I think I still need a bit of time and in the mean time we can go to our family therapist* and talk it all out." Tess adds, and Megan nods. "Of course, we can do that." She says.

Later that night, Megan pulls Tess close and kisses her cheek, and they snuggle together in bed. "So, what do you think of going to Mt. Komorebi? Just me, you, Saf, Amir, and Emily." Megan suggests. "I'd love that, Meggs and toast." Tess says, her eyes lighting up. "Skiing with our nooboos during the day and woohooing you by the fireplace in our room at night." She adds and Megan grins. "Sure Tessie," she says, before Tess snuggles closer to her and they both start to get sleepier as they talk until they drift off.

Also, I included a cute photo of Tess doing a heart fingers thing as she looks at Megan, it's really cute. 😊

Olivia has posted a video of her talking about the person she is “seeing” commenting about how her and Ethan never really had this opportunity blah blah blah. WHY IS SHE STILL A PLATH ON SM? Girl why are you not going back to Meggs of Ethan and his family are nothing to you? I get she has a lot of trauma but why is she still profiting on the Plath name?

She's addressed that before and said it has a lot to do with how disconnected she feels from the Meggs side of her family, a lot of whom have cut her off entirely, including her parents. I can understand how that combined with a lot of abuse and trauma in her childhood could make her want to separate herself from that identity. She said on a personal level she just feels more connected to her Plath surname right now, not because of Ethan necessarily, but because it's the one she had during the period where she first felt like an independent person and did a lot of growing.

Even without that though, just from a marketing perspective, it wouldn't be a great idea to change her name on her socials as a public figure. Even when public figures do legally change their name, they often leave the old name they were known by in their handle because people are still going to use it when searching for them. It's beneficial to keep all your handles and usernames as consistent as possible, and as similar to each other as possible, if you want to build an online presence.

And all of that aside, I do think that after all the bullshit that family put her through, she can milk that name for as much as it's worth if she wants lol. Which if we're being honest isn't much, Plathville isn't a very popular show, Olivia is by and large the person most people come to watch, and she has a successful business to fall back on when the show inevitably gets canceled. Not saying milking the name is what she's doing, it felt like she was being genuine when she talked about her reasons for keeping it for the time being, but I think she's justified in keeping a name that is legally hers for as long as she wants.

Meanwhile in Evergreen Harbor:

Megan Liao wanted to do something special for her wife Tess, and for herself honestly, so she bought some fancy lingerie online a few days ago and puts in on her and Tess’s room now. It’s the perfect time because their daughter Emily is sleeping at her friend Kiran’s house, and Tess’s cousin Luna and her family, who Megan and Tess live with, are in Henford on Bagley for a few days to visit Luna's moms.

Megan goes over to her vanity, puts on some lipstick, and sprays herself with perfume. She gets up and calls Tess, asking how her paranormal research event is going and Tess asks how she and Emily are doing. Then things get a little flirty and Megan coyly admits she has a surprise for Tess. "Oh? What kind of surprise." Tess asks and Megan grins. "You'll see, Tessie." She says. "Okay, I have to go now but I'll be there as soon as I can, Meggs and toast." Tess says before she and Megan hang up. Megan sends her a selfie and Tess sends back a heart eyes and a laughing cat emoji. Megan reads a book in the meantime, and quickly checks to make sure she’s graded some of her language and literature student’s papers. 40 minutes later, she hears a knock at the door and inhales sharply. She stands by it and grins. “Come in,” she says, her heart racing, and she hears the door open.

The whole Poppy set by @surely-sims and @ice-creamforbreakfast is amazing and I put a bunch of pieces from the set on Megan and the rest of Hecking-Feldman-Chen-Liao* family but I got this specific lingerie and the matching sheer top for Megan to wear in this post. It looks really pretty on her and the cat swatch is purrfect** for her. 😸💖

ok I've kind of changed my mind a little with the Plaths after learning Moriah was also close friends with Olivia's sister and then cut off all contact with her for Olivia.

Moriah ditched Olivia's sister Lydia Grace bc at the time Olivia and her family and the rest of the Plaths thought Lydia Grace was a bad influence (bc she lived like a normal secular person). And now it's like Moriah's doing the same to Olivia for her parents. It also sounds like their divorce shook her up enough that she's going back to Christianity too, which is a whole nother can of worms.

Olivia says something at one point about how when she was young and saw her sister rebelling she'd tell on her because even though she was unhappy with their restrictions, she felt security in getting along with them and them thinking she was obedient. Because at least it was some form of positive attention from them, whereas her sister was more of a rebel and often treated like the scape goat for all the family's problems, and I think there's probably a little bit of that going on with Moriah too as far as getting affirmation from her parents.

The only other thought I can think of is how weird it is that both the Plaths and the Meggs have a Lydia and a Micah.

Edit: do y'all really think Olivia "deleted" Moriah's original song off the entire internet AND stole the money she made from it??? Like one, how could there only be one way for Moriah to access this song and it's through Olivia and two, she said she was going to sue Olivia until that happened but like....... that's even more reason to sue someone?? Idk it just doesn't add up for me

Ethan said she wasn't paying rent and he called her, told her she had to pay rent and to apologize to Olivia for lying about her and Moriah then said "ok" and blocked him on everything. I think she's lying 👀

So they're a complicated couple living in a K-drama moment. Gosh, I can see their dynamic in the form of a K-drama esp in Hajun's profiling background and family, bet his mom would offer ₩10M to Letitia just to keep Hajun away XD. Hell, Hajun is a tsundere but he loves her deeply, MAKE THIS OPPA CONFESS DIRECTLY!!!

Miharu is the team manager of PXG, I think their romance would be so intimate and lovely together since Rin doesn't know how to feel about love, he is opening up to her more and more 🥺

CAN I SAY OUT OF ALL SHIP DYNAMICS THIS IS WHAT I LOVE?!?! ACADEMIC RIVALS TO LOVERS OR FRENEMIES TO LOVERS TROUPE?! Tsukki always picks on Miharu every time yet they always have time to be sweet and serious with one another 😭😭😭. What I love about this ship is that Tsukishima is trying his best to be real for Miharu without having extra impressions. Their banters are enough for the both of them to fell in love. Mind you they're couple goals too, because both of them are smart!
