Life, Vol. 13, Pages 2359: First Molecular Evidence of Seewis Virus in Croatia
Orthohantaviruses are mainly carried and transmitted by wild rodents, although during the last decade, they have also been identified in multiple species of shrews and moles. Orthohantavirus, Orthohantavirus seewisense (Seewis virus, SWSV), first detected in Switzerland in a single Sorex araneus (Eurasian common shrew) specimen, has been further described in several European countries, including Croatia’s neighboring Slovenia and Hungary. Croatia is a well-known endemic region for several zoonotic agents including three different orthohantaviruses: Orthohantavirus puumalaense (PUUV), Orthohantavirus dobravaense (DOBV), and Orthohantavirus tulaense (TULV). In this study, nine shrews were tested and SWSV #RNA was detected in liver, lung, and kidney belonging to two shrews (22.22%), one collected on Medvednica mountain in Zagreb County, and the other in the Stara Gradiška area in lowland Croatia. The phylogenetic analysis of the complete S segment’s open reading frame (ORF) and partial L-segment revealed that the Croatian sequences, when compared to sequences from the adjacent geographic regions, form a specific genetic lineage. Two SWSV-positive shrew species—Sorex araneus and Neomys milleri (Mediterranean water shrew)—were identified using barcode-based sequence analysis. Therefore, the SWSV detection in N. milleri throughout the course of this study is seen as a rare find in this shrew species. To our knowledge, this is the first molecular and phylogenetic analysis of SWSV in Croatia. https://www.mdpi.com/2075-1729/13/12/2359?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Ogier Leads 3-way Battle into Croatia Rally Finale
Sébastien Ogier led a finely-balanced Croatia Rally after Saturday’s enthralling penultimate leg ended with the leading three drivers blanketed by just over 10sec.
In a day of many twists and turns – literally and metaphorically – the world champion completed the longest day of this third round of the FIA World Rally Championship with a 6.9sec advantage over Toyota Yaris team-mate Elfyn Evans.
Opening day leader Thierry Neuville was relegated to third after a troubled morning, but the determined Belgian closed to within 10.4sec of Ogier in his Hyundai i20 after a better afternoon.
Leading positions after day 2
1. S Ogier / J Ingrassia FRA Toyota Yaris 2hr 06min 35.8sec
2. E Evans / S Martin GBR Toyota Yaris +6.9sec
3. T Neuville / M Wydaeghe BEL Hyundai i20 + 10.4sec
4. O Tänak / M Järveoja EST Hyundai i20 +37.8sec
5. A Fourmaux / R Jamoul FRA Ford Fiesta +1min 29.5sec
6. G Greensmith / C Patterson GBR Ford Fiesta +2min 23.8sec
The day’s dramas began early this morning in the Zagreb service park when Ogier and Evans opted for Pirelli’s hard compound P Zero tires. Neuville chose a mix of hard and soft rubber in the belief they would be better-suited to the cool temperatures.
Dry roads and a climbing thermometer meant the hard tires provided better grip. Neuville lost the lead in the opening speed test as the rear of his i20 repeatedly slid off the optimum line. He stalled his engine in the following test and brake problems added to his woes.
In contrast, Ogier won two of the four morning stages, Evans won one and Takamoto Katsuta completed a Toyota clean sweep with his second career fastest time.
Neuville was almost 20sec off the lead but was thrown a lifeline when a rear right puncture cost Ogier 10sec in the afternoon’s opener. Both won a stage and shared fastest time in another, while Evans’ consistency kept him in the hunt and set up a compelling final day.
Ott Tänak was fourth, almost 30sec further back in another i20. Having made the same tire choice as Neuville, the Estonian was unable to match the leading trio but had almost a minute in hand over Adrien Fourmaux’s Ford Fiesta in fifth.
The Frenchman was again impressive on his top-flight debut, twice setting second fastest times to stretch his advantage over team-mate Gus Greensmith in sixth. The Briton was despondent after a difficult morning, but his pace improved this afternoon.
Four more stages lie in wait in Sunday’s finale. Two tests are repeated, the opener driven on Medvednica mountain north of Zagreb and the longest of the rally. They add up to 78.58km with the final Wolf Power Stage offering bonus points for drivers and manufacturers.

1 And there was a man of mount Ephraim, whose name was Micah.
2 And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my son.
3 And when he had restored the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the Lord from my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.
4 Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and they were in the house of Micah.
5 And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.
6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
7 And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there.
8 And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.
9 And Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to sojourn where I may find a place.
10 And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.
11 And the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.
12 And Micah consecrated the Levite; and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.
13 Then said Micah, Now know I that the Lord will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest. — Judges 17 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain.
