May 8th - To Medicine Bow we Go
The morning in Jackson was fruitful upon our waking. I had told Lewis I wanted boots, blades, and breakfast before 10am and I intended to get them. We walked around the small town square and I was drawn to things that were not on my target, but I gleefully retail therapy'd anyway. We ate burritos from a kiosk that called itself D.O.G. and we decided it was better if we didn't know what it stood for.
Jackson was sleepy but more receptive to the morning tourist, the snow had leveled off and the sun had even threatened to make an appearance.
Despite its oddities though, we had no problem snaking our way through Mountain Man toys and grabbing coffee before sliding back into Stacey and pointing westward towards Medicine Bow in Southeast Wyoming. Jackson surprised us on the way out with moose, bounding deer, herds of bison, and a never ending bike path.
The snow did not stay its hand, and as we putted on through the last of the Tetons and Shoshone National Forest, we found ourselves and thousands of trees coated in the fluffy sugar, bowing under the weight. We braced ourselves for another white out and found the whimsical path give way to even more rolling hills. When was Wyoming supposed to get boring and flat, again?
However, the highlight of the day was yet to come. As we plowed on across the innards of the WY state, we found ourselves far away from the burrito in our bellies and in need of a beer and a thought. Picking a middle point that sounded interesting, we stopped at the only bar between us and our next major way-point: The Split Rock Bar and Cafe (and Gas).
Jeffrey City's sign claimed a population of 50 but the barkeep's husband and the owner of Jeffrey City Gas (the gas station...er... two pumps attached to the cafe), a man named Dusty, claimed that the town used to be home to thousands who worked in the uranium mines on the edge of the incorporation. Dusty was a font of knowledge. He explained the long lines of wooden slat pallets propped up along the sides of the Wyoming highways (snow deflectors), the namesake of the place (a mountain down the road with a "gun notch" at the top and a crack that runs itself right down to the ground), and the reason Google Maps wouldn't direct us through the heart of Medicine Bow (the pass was usually snowed in till June). He wore a jacket I'm sure had never seen a detergent in its decades in existence and his wife Isebela paced back and forth behind the bar with her white, fluffy mutt in tow, keeping busy and tending to some French travelers at the end of the counter sipping Lipton tea in quaint ceramic cups and looking bewildered. She didn't even blink when Lewis and I nearly shouted "That one!" when she had said "New Belgium" after listing six other disappointing domestic brews and one Mexican one.
With Dusty's good advice we struck out for our home for the night: The Mountain View Historic Hotel in Centennial just on the other side of the pass, and found ourselves petting Stacey's tender dash while we traversed gravel roads. The land was so flat and the light so stark on these back tracks we could not help but stop and put our feet on the dusty soil, investigating some trees that had taken root oddly in the distance.
It seems they were growing right out of the creek! The wind blew solemnly over the plains, rattling their not-yet-budding branches. Spring was still to come to this valley.
We wound our way finally into Centennial, a town of 200 at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain and ate a frozen pizza fresh from Friendly's bar--the only establishment open after 8pm on Wednesday in the township.
After more cryptics and beer and talk with listless locals and visitors alike, we laid our heads down in a small suite above a local cafe, and dreamed of tomorrow's Nebraska.

thinking about neteyam, and how he kept getting things stolen from him all his life.
about how the inherited mischief that came with being the son of jake sully was ripped away from him when his grandmother smiled and declared you will be a great chief one day;
im thinking about how he was robbed of the future he grew up trying so hard to be worthy of—about the fifteen years of his past he had to leave behind as they walked away from their clan;
im thinking about his trinkets, necklaces and visors and arm guards, some lovingly given, some secretly collected, some clumsily made, gathering time in a box he will never open again;
i’m thinking about eldest children, and how they learn early on to scavenge for pieces of themselves that aren’t tainted by the curse of having to grow up faster;
and im thinking about how young neteyam must have been to know when to perform as a good son, a strong warrior, a worthy chief-to-be, and how he must have felt so lost when nobody answered his question of when he could stop;
how he must have always secretly wished he could get away from the chains that bound him to his duties, from all of it;
(i’m thinking about how neteyam’s last words were dad i want to go home i want to go home—)

hi im ranting (positively! this game kills me but in a good way) about breath of the wild again
i know it's controversial but i love the way the story of the game is told. because you start the game in the middle, perhaps near the end, of the story. the game is entirely through link's perspective and he wakes up knowing and remembering nothing. in turn, the player starts off knowing nothing. the past is revealed as the story goes along, and the player learns about the past and about the land as link does. there are little tidbits about hyrule and about the calamity scattered across the land. an old woman in hateno village tells you of an age of desolation that she grew up in. the travellers you see on the road are younger people because they're described by older characters as more bold, whereas the older characters grew up being told to never leave the village, it's too dangerous outside (compare this even to tears of the kingdom, where travellers are more common because the land has been safer. even older characters have left their home to travel elsewhere (not including the lurelin villagers)). battlefields are still strewn with old rusty weapons and deactivated guardians that no one but monsters will go near. myths and legends about the princess and hero have been passed down, to the point where their legitmacy is questioned and everyone has a different opinion on them.
it's environmental storytelling. it's things like seeing drawings and a bow in zelda's study and seeing a child reading a storybook with a hero that wears a blue tunic similar to link's. it's the stories that the villagers share about old myths that turn out to be true. it's the ruins scattered across the land, long since overtaken by monster camps but still unmistakably being houses that people once lived in. it's the utter lack of civilization anywhere remotely near the castle and the feeling of dread in the ruins of the town that surrounds it. it's a kingdom entrenched in its past, with no ability to move away from it until the calamity is finally defeated.
#head into the wall. i love this game so much#legend of zelda#breath of the wild#and no i dont hate totk for getting rid of the sheikah tech and replacing it with zonai tech#the zonai tech is foreign and new to the people of hyrule and theyre EXCITED about it#how many zonai researchers are there in totk vs how many sheikah researchers in botw?#people are wary of the technology that destroyed their home a century ago#and they're terrified of the guardians that still roam the land#i still hold that link likely was behind the reason why the shrine of resurrection was completely dismantled#it's kinda like majora's mask in which half of the story is in the side quests and the characters#mm had a plot yeah but it kind of accompanied the rest of the setting#link had a goal but he also had so many people to talk to#botw is similar. link has a goal in mind but he's also one to help others#and if someone literally just lost their chickens or if their husband is sick and needs medicine. he's willing to help them out#the world is just as important as the plot itself and i think i like that more#than just a linear plot which is accompanied by the world#botw totk and mm reward you for exploring#(along with some of the others like twilight princess and a link between worlds)#but it's very different i think when half of the game is about exploring#or more than half even. you have your goal but you have to get there first#and there are so many ways you can get there and so much you can encounter along the way#biting screaming crying#the bow is in zelda's room but close enough

Battle of Alberta Timeline pt. 1: 17th-19th Centuries
[ Alberta Story ] [ part 1 ] [ part 2 soon ]
Phew.
This was an ambitious little project for such a short time period.
I don't have much to say about it other than that, it is just supposed to be a crash course in the broad strokes of what Alberta considers to be its history. It glosses over a lot and is mostly about the foundations and incorporations of the characters (i.e. the municipalities that I have personified thus far) and a few contextual clues to the worlds they grew up in. It's basically a big cheat sheet for me since I'm both a stickler for consistency and also very inconsistent... Of course, each character could easily have their own personalized timeline on top of this, so I tried to leave room for that possibility.
(missing is St. Albert, who would be featured at 1861 if I ever intended to draw him)
And, of course, it's supposed to provoke your curiosity a little since it is of course an ask blog, I can't just explain everything down here much as I would like to :)
Enjoy!

And that’s also why you should be less harsh on how Caspian reacts during that first meeting in the film.
His uncle has told stories of old. Righteous, valiant, magnificent and just kings and queens, who led mythical creatures thought to be extinct into battle. Battle-hardened veterans that defeated eternal winter and ushered in a Golden Reign that lasted for decades. That benefitted Narnians for CENTURIES after they mysteriously vanished. Wise and old rulers. A personal relationship with Aslan himself, crowned by him in Cair Paravel.
And then he finally meets them when he blows the magic horn and they’re.
They’re fucking.
They’re fucking teenagers. Sassy teenagers, at that. Like he is.
No special abilities, it seems, no extreme charisma, no lion. Foolish strategy during that siege, war plans based on Aslan showing up (who’s not been around in CENTURIES) and vibes.
Our friend Caspian even manages to hit Peter in the face. In the face!
And yet he responds with “ I thought you’d be older. “
Dude got the whiplash of his life, four sassy teenagers instead of legends, and all but shrugged it off.
And then Peter fucking roasts him like a schoolboy. No wise and unmovable old king, no aura of certainty.
Peter specifically as an insecure and petulant teenager.
Man, it must’ve been rough.
the pevensies discovering the treasure room in the ruins of cair paravel must have been like stepping into their own tomb. here is the ruin of what you were. here is the remnant. here is where they took what you left them with and laid it to rest. here is your funeral shroud, daughter of eve. the skirt is too long for you now. here is the cordial, half-full. they dared not use it to save anyone without your hand to do the saving. here is your bow, still strung, and your arrows, unshot. here is the sword your hand still remembers, and here is the face you have forgotten. you did not die here, and yet still you were buried. what is a legend but another kind of ghost?
#redemption when peter and edmund come for that false king’s head in the duel though#and peter fucking dominates#caspian must’ve thought all sorts of things to himself#but peter is casually dominating a master swordsman and then delivers a finishing blow without his weapon and with his back to his opponent#suddenly caspian sees an old king again#and edmund is all business#understanding troop morale#battle medicine#strategy through tunneling#lucy leads fucking aslan into battle#sees an army coming and just pulls a knife#susan wrecking everybody’s shit with bow and arrow#that’s the kings and queens of old alright

Hi friend! I hope today went better than yesterday and hopefully tomorrow you're off? Here's a little random sweet thought: Suho and Chanyeol are definitely the pair to slow dance in their living room just because they love it. The height is perfect for Suho to lay his head on Chanyeol's chest and just feel safe and loved. -🎀
