A Turkey As The WWE Mascot ? : All About The Gobbledy Gooker
Hey Everyone! I just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to anyone who celebrates! I am very grateful for all of the support you’ve shown me whether it’s commenting , liking , and reblogging. I love you all and I appreciate you all so much!
We’ve all seen our favorite sports teams have mascots. I’m pretty sure that you’ve seen them on the sidelines dancing with the cheerleaders at college football and basketball games or hyping up the crowds at NFL games. Examples of NFL mascots include KC Wolf for the Kansas City Chiefs, Sir Purr for the Carolina Panthers, Pat Patriot for the New England Patriots , and Rowdy for the Dallas Cowboys. However , did you know that WWE had a mascot for Survivor Series in 1990? In this article , I’ll be explaining the story of The Gobbedly Gooker .
The Gobbledy Gooker is a turkey mascot that was originally portrayed by Hèctor Guerrero , the brother of Eddie Guerrero. The character was created by Vince McMahon. McMahon’s idea for the character was for it to wrestle and needed a veteran wrestler for the role. Héctor Guerrero would be considered for the character after being recommended to McMahon by Dusty Rhodes. The Gooker was used to promote Survivor Series by having an egg at live WWE shows , leaving the fans to guess what it was. Fan theories about the egg included speculation about Ric Flair coming from World Championship Wrestling and making his WWF debut by hatching from the egg. Another speculation about the egg involved The Undertaker , who made his debut at Survivor Series as Ted DiBiase’s mystery partner in a different segment that was unrelated to the Gobbledy Gooker.
The Gobbedly Gooker would make its debut at Survivor Series in 1990 after weeks of speculation. WWF announcer, Mean Gene Okerlund , would stand by the large egg and make speculations of his own. He would predict that Lorraine Olivia , the 1990 Playboy Playmate of The Month for November , balloons , and a dinosaur would hatch out of the egg. Thus, he and the fans were wrong. The egg hatched and Héctor Guerrero would climb out of the egg in a turkey suit. He would make turkey noises as he approached Okerlund for an interview. Okerlund would nickname him The Gobbledy Gooker.
The fans in attendance would show their displeasure for the character by booing while Guerrero and Okerlund were dancing in the middle of the ring . Commentators Gorilla Monsoon and Rowdy Roddy Piper enjoyed the segment with Piper saying the character won the heart of Hartford, Connecticut and Monsoon calling it a big smash. After Hector Guerrero sustained an injury during a show at Madison Square Garden , the Gobbledy Gooker would be never seen again until WrestleMania 17 in 2001 during the Gimmick Battle Royal.
The Gobbledy Gooker was also portrayed by other wrestlers. The Boogeyman would become the character in 2008 during a segment with the Colón family and the Bella Twins. In 2009, Maryse would use the character to attack her rival , Melina. For the 25th anniversary of its debut in 2015 , New Day member , Xavier Woods, would wear the costume. Jey Uso would also wear as a disguise to turn against The New Day. The last time the Gobbledy Gooker would be seen in WWE is 2020.
My Final Thoughts:
The Gobbledy Gooker is an iconic character. When I first watched the 1990 Survivor Series , I thought it was pretty cool to see. And since it is Thanksgiving, I thought that it would be fitting to write about . If the Gobbledy Gooker was to be brought back for today, who would you want to see wearing the turkey suit ? I would want to see R-Truth wear it because he would make it cool and bring his own sense of humor to it .
Love You All,
- Kay
