THE SHEIK MASSACRE
youtube
"A group of professional wrestlers disrespect wrestling legend The Iron Sheik. Then when lighting strikes, an Iron Sheik action figure becomes alive. The Iron Sheik doll then hunts down the disrespectful new school wrestlers down and makes those jabronis humble!"

RIP to Khosrow Vaziri -- the Iron Sheik -- the legendary pro (and amateur) wrestler and former WWE Champion, who was one of the most fascinating people I've ever met in my life. What an incredible, turbulent, interesting life that Sheik lived.
I wrote a piece back in 2011 about a couple of days that I had spent with and around him a few years earlier, and it's still one of my favorite things that I've ever written.
Khuda hafiz, Khosrow.

Not about presidents but that article you posted about the iron Sheik was excellent and seemed like it should be in sports illustrated or something. TY for sharing!
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback!
As I mentioned yesterday, I wrote that article ("Camel Clutch") a long time ago -- probably 2010 or 2011, I think -- but it's one of my favorite things that I've ever written. And the Iron Sheik was such a fascinating human being that I'm fortunate to have had the experience of being around him for a couple of days.
I just wish I still remembered how to write like that. Or at all.

The Iron Sheik Merges With the Infinite
Wrestler Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, known to generations of fans as the colorful character The Iron Sheik, has passed.
The Iron Sheik was representative of WWF/ WWE's early smash success via playing out America's psychoses via avatars of various concepts in the zeitgeist appearing in the ring, often to battle the heroes of the WWF. The Iron Sheik was, of course, the threat Americans saw of the Middle East and Saudi Arabia in the post-gas-crisis world.
Vaziri was not, however, actually Saudi. He was from Iran, and I have a very hard time figuring out when and how he came to the States, but it was in the early 70's and tied originally to Olympic wrestling. I think. That he would choose not to villainize Iran in his heel-turn of the 1980s is not a shock.
Like many kids of my generation, I liked the villains as much as the heroes of the WWE, and The Iron Sheik was a favorite. With social media, he resurfaced, pounding out tweets in the broken dialect he employed as his character to cutting and hilarious effect. I think I saw him tweeting just last week, so his passing is a bit of a surprise.
I'm aware of the brow-furrowing concern that media cops have put on wrestling then and now. I get it. But if I may... not once did I think The Iron Sheik was representative of anything but silliness and sweet wrestling moves, and while not fitting a rubric of acceptable, he's still a beloved figure of a certain era of my life.
Godspeed, you maniac.

✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪✨💪
To all guys, who've spent some of their best free teenage times, the good old (very young) days, glued to Monday Night Raw, Smackdown, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, etc etc. If there is one thing America is an absolute authority on, it is action cinema! (Ok ok also basketball) And what better more authentic yet safe action, than make-believe sport! - Ie SHOW-WRESTLING! And so, a small tribute to the entt millions like me have grown up watching, from an era that seems may sadly never come back, "WWE's (WWF then) ATTITUDE ERA" .... Here's a small Indie tribute to that magical 1.5-2 decades of American Show-Wrestling, incl entire 90's, YOU'LL LOVE! INDIE'S TOP 36 SHOW-WRESTLERS OF ALL TIME !
