Girl Haven by Lilah Sturges, Meaghan Carter & Joamette Gil
When seventh-grader Ash, his crush Eleanor, and their friends are transported to a girls-only imaginary world, Ash must come to terms with the fact that he may actually be a transgender girl. Full of wonder, humor, and heart, Girl Haven is the newest original story from the author of Lumberjanes.
Three years ago, Ash's mom, Kristin, left home and never came back. Now, Ash lives in the house where Kristin grew up. All of her things are there. Her old room, her old clothes, and the shed, where she spent her childhood creating a fantasy world called Koretris.
Ash knows all about Koretris: how it's a haven for girls, with no men or boys allowed, and filled with fanciful landscapes and creatures. When Ash's friends decide to try going to Koretris, using one of Kristin's spellbooks, Ash doesn't think anything will happen. But the spell works, and Ash discovers that the world Kristin created is actually a real place, with real inhabitants and very real danger.
But if Koretris is real, why is Ash there? Everyone has always called Ash a boy. Ash uses he/him pronouns. Shouldn't the spell have kept Ash out? And what does it mean if it let Ash in?

Girl Haven - Lilah Sturges and Meaghan Carter's Fantasy Story Explores Gender and Self-Discovery for a Younger Audience
Girl Haven – Lilah Sturges and Meaghan Carter’s Fantasy Story Explores Gender and Self-Discovery for a Younger Audience
Girl Haven, by Lilah Sturges, Meaghan Carter and Joamette Gil, is a fantasy comic mostly focused on the topic of gender. It explores how complicated the idea of gender can be when coming of age. The story begins in a more everyday setting, Marsha P. Johnson Middle School (the name is a shout out to LGBT+ history). The reader is introduced to the protagonists and members of the Pride society at…

The Secret Loves of Geek Girls Edited by Hope Nicholson
Well. The only logical way to start this review:
A++
This is one of the best anthologies I’ve read in awhile, fiction or nonfiction. It’s not just a collection of stories about the different ways a girl can love, want to love, and lose love, but how it’s all experienced by geek girls--it’s about love for a person found through the things we love, be it fanfiction, video games. books, movie, etc.
It’s extremely diverse, and with contributors like Marjorie Liu, Mariko Tamaki, and Margaret Atwood, what DOESN’T pique your interest already? It also introduced me to a whole host of awesome writers and creators, some of whom I knew just by name and others I had (sadly) never heard of.
I almost put off buying this during employee appreciation week at Barnes and Noble, and I’m so glad I didn’t. It was fantastic. It’s also gorgeous--some stories are told in comic form, and others are simply supplemented with beautiful illustrations (several of which I want prints for my bedroom). And it’s only $14.99 at its list price!
This isn’t a book full of your average girl-meets-boy or girl-meets-girl stories, though those are present, and they are great. But there’s so much more. You’re gonna want to buy this one, because once you read it you will want it on your shelf.

You should all read Meaghan Carter’s webcomic Take Off! as well as her new Egyptian Mythology based comic Godslave. Meaghan is a Toronto based artist and her work features interesting female protagonists, mythical beasts and well researched mythology. Her work is seriously great.

Recent haul:
True Patriot - an anthology exploring Canadian supers. Includes stuff by Adam Gorham, Faith Erin Hicks and J. Bone. And probably other folks whose name I know, but I've forgotten to mention.
Take Off - by Meaghan Carter. Volume 1 is a collected edition of her web comic
Shoplifter - by Michael Cho. Omigod, I love his two-colour style
Shamrock - by Chloe LaPointe. I knew the least about this book and artist, but I love trying out indie books so I grabbed it from FanExpo.

Some silly fanart I doodled of gamma-girl's comic Take Off. I wondered what the comic would be like if Cass and Grey had to combine for the race, instead of just working together. It's sort of a Wonder Twins thing.
Now go read Take Off. It's almost finished! ;_;
(And go thank Meaghan for dealing with my shenanigans.)

Let me tell you guy's about a webcomic.
This webcomic I've only just started reading but, holy HELL where do I start?
It is so COOL!
The rough plot is, Cassidy, the rider and Grey, her dragon like steed races against other people with mythical creatures as their mounts, but these creatures are intelligent and can speak.
I won't try to explain it any further than this since I'm still reading but what I can tell you about is how fucking DIVERSE this comic is.
Just to show a few, and the story is REALLY neat and the character's are so fucking lovely right now!
I just, do yourself a favour and give this webcomic a chance!
