What happens when the kids from Hawkins visit the bustling, neon-tinged streets of New York City? Their world will be turned upside down all over again as they come across four totally radical reptiles in the ultimate 1980s nostalgia crossover, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things from IDW! Hey all! I haven't posted here in so long that one of my most recent entries is announcing Process Party, the podcast I did with Mike Dawson for a few years (aaaand which has been more or less done/hibernating for a year or two now😂) so I thought I'd actually post about my current podcast, as I migrate hosts (and archive Process Party for the ages) in this holiday season.
The new one is called In This Issue… It's a podcast about what I'm calling "formative comics reading experiences," with a focus on the single issue format. Every episode I'm talking to a special guest from the world of comics, doing a close reading of a comic book (IE not a graphic novel! 22-64 pages is the range we're working with here) and have a lively chat about it. TBH I haven't actually posted a new ITI in a couple months either, but I just have to get the will to edit the ones I have banked. Look, the holidays are hard! Anyway, there's been 9 episodes so far and they're all great in their own special way! I'm excited to talk to more dorks about the comics that made them go "WHUH!?" in the coming year. Check the place where you normally find your podcasts for these and the next ones, whenever I get around to posting them!

I guess one good thing did come out of @silversprocket (also: https://www.silversprocket.net/) getting flooded by the recent Weather in California, which is that it motivated me to buy more of @funeralbeat‘s stuff from them sooner than I planned, and it’s all great.
Silver Sprocket is a publisher/store for a bunch of independent artists and creators, generally with queer/leftist/punk/etc. vibes, and Jenn Woodall has been one of my favorites since I first found her stuff. Her general aesthetic is kind of like what if Sailor Moon was sick of everyone’s shit and just murdered anyone who disrespected women, and she has multiple comics and other art like that that I’m totally here for. But also special mention to Marie and Worrywart for capturing the feeling of anxiety really well.
Now I have to go read my brand new copy of Space Trash while hoping Magical Beatdown 2 gets a reprint and I notice while it’s still in stock...

May Reading Wrap-up
I read 28 books in May. I think. Goodreads is being wonky with my re-reads so it may be more like 29 or 30.
Of those 28 - 30 books, 7 were comic books or graphic novels. Benji Nate's Lorna and the Magical Beatdown zines by Jenn Woodall really stood out. I love Benji Nate's weird, weird, weird sense of humor.
May was really the month of re-reading. I re-read 8 Theodora Taylor books! I just can't quit her. From a recommendation in her newsletter, I also picked up a couple of Tiffany Patterson books that were pretty ok, a little repetitive in terms of plot and characters.
Another re-read was the Dream Team series by Kristen Ashley. I liked it better the second time around. Maybe because my expectations were lower?
Also re-read most of the Travises series by Lisa Kleypas. I wish she would write more contemporaries.
And I finally finished the Liz Danger series by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer! While it reaches neither the comedic or romantic heights of Agnes and the Hitman, the three books in the series were still enjoyable, funny, and featured a pretty decent romance. Plus, some plot twists I did not see coming. I'm pretty excited that Crusie and Mayer are writing again. Their next series is out later in June!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Stranger Things Crossover Comic Incoming
Tumblr media
IDW Publishing and Dark Horse Comics have partnered on a four-issue comic miniseries where the kids from Hawkins will meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things hails from writer Cameron Chittock and artist Fero Pe.
“Eleven, Max, Dustin, Mike, Will, and Lucas are looking forward to a nonthreatening, fun-filled trip to New York City. With the gang hundreds of miles from the otherworldly weirdness of their hometown, they’re sure to catch a break this time…or at least that’s what they think until they encounter a threat both bizarre and familiar. To face that threat, they must unite with a fearsome fighting team every bit as bizarre…but green!” (IDW Publishing)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things #1 (of 4) goes on sale in July 2023. The first issue features Cover A by Fero Pe, Cover B by Jorge Corona, Cover C by Jenn Woodall, Cover D by Adam Gorham, and retailer incentive variants by Rafael Albuquerque and Daniel Warren Johnson.

Space Trash is probably my favorite new comic I read this year. Jenn Woodall just knocks me flat with her pages and the design on this volume is fantastic.

The concept of this post reminds me a lot of Magical Beatdown by Jenn Woodall.
indomitable queer spirit vs. the abject cruelty of society
trans shonen anime
