The eldest hybrid sits in the Cullen house, eyeing the obsessively detailed decor and the photos atop the mantlepiece nearby. Renesmee, the first known hybrid to not be related to them, smiling cheerfully at different ages. In some, she was shrouded in loving hugs from her supposed parents. Sure, she looked like them, but that could easily be faked.

Her brothers words rang in her ears. It was possible for our mothers to live. You can stop blaming yourself.

But her father’s constant ranting that their births had been evolution taking place, that there had been NO WAY for the fragile human body to survive the birth and a transformation, rang stronger. This had been a fairly elaborate ruse to discredit her father’s lifes work, but a ruse nonethless.

“My father says there’s no way you would have survived the birth...” Serena states matter of factly, hiding the flashes of Maysun’s birth piercing her memories. Maysun’s mother screaming in agony, Serena trying to stop the bleeding to no avail. Arms fold in front of her as she leans toward the younger vampire.  “So whose is she, really? Your sisters? A cousin, perhaps? It’s clever, I’ll give you that.”
