Snippet Sunday
Everyone on Tumblr has been super excitedly sharing the 9-1-1 trailer and meanwhile I'm like 'welp, better get a hustle on that 6b fic if I want to have any chance of getting it out before the premiere' 😬
So. Have a snippet from the one where May realised a long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother and after the lightning strike she decides to do something about it.
---
Somewhat ironically, she did overhear him talking about protein shakes later on during that same gathering. However, it only served to solidify the shift in her perception of him because he was talking about names and apparently he somehow knew that the inventor of protein shakes had changed his name because a psychic had told him he’d have more luck if his name had more ‘r’s.
Both her and her mom had been surprised by the random example – May had even googled it and it was actually true – and Hen had laughed and told them that apparently Buck loved ‘a good research spiral’ and would often bring up obscure little facts, sometimes to liven up a conversation and sometimes just because he was so enthusiastic about his new knowledge that he wanted to share it.
“Golden retriever that he is,” Hen had added affectionately, grinning at Buck who had somehow pivoted to arguing about the impact of the full moon on their job, a topic which made Bobby groan and playfully grumble something like “Not again, kid.”
Hen was not the type of person who would tolerate some hypermasculine white dude’s antics so the fact that she was clearly very fond of Buck only corroborated her changing idea of what he was like.
Which was good, because her second realisation was that she was going to be seeing Buck a lot more often than initially anticipated.

KAR ASTER’S RP PLOTTING CHEAT-SHEET
Want new-and-exciting plots for your character? Long to reach out to more of your followers, but don’t know where to start? Fear not! Fill out this form and give your RP partners both present and future all the of juicy jumping off points they need to help you get your characters acquainted. Be sure to tag the players whose characters YOU want more cues to interact with, and repost, don’t reblog! Feel free to add or remove sections as you see fit. Template here.
Mun name: Kar, Karmun, or if prefer to separate mun from muse, use my middle name, Asher.
OOC Contact: Here, or on @stellevatum or @karthonic or discord on request.
Who the heck is my muse anyway:
Main Verse: She's a Primordial god of destruction that got reborn as the abomination child of Hecate; raised by Jewish lesbians in 90s NYC after the BPRD found her in a sarcophagus. She is constantly fighting against her inherent Ogdru Hem nature of destroying all reality, and just bein being a regular person. Inherited her mom's position as Queen of the Crossroads a few years back and juggles that and BPRD duties.
Points of interest:
Resting bitch face ahoy, and if she's not wearing her glasses (which assume for the most part she is), her eyes. She also has fangs which are more obvious when talking or smiling. Supernatural muses may feel free to 'sense' an odd or unsettling aura around her.
What they’ve been up to recently:
Main timeline: rebuilding the BPRD, lobbying for more supernatural rights, outreach and opening dialogue between the worlds for at least tolerable co-habitation. Guest Lecturing at colleges. Possibly writing a book on early bronze age cultures, and in talks on hosting a doc for BBC.
Where to find them:
New York, Fairfield (BPRD Headquarters) mainly, but her job(s) take her everywhere. Her family house in Limbo/Erebus and sometimes bothering the Hadean court. (Their Wifi sucks though.)
Current plans:
Not really? Just remade her blog to in-character shitpost, but if wills want more plotted stuff I'm down but I'm keeping it very chill here.
Desired interactions:
Cracky, fun, casual with little high stakes stuff at the moment is ideal. But more planned out stuff is possible. Bureau Shenanigans (Like The Office/WWDITS) style shit that's a little weird, crazy, but slice of life because that's life at the BPRD, especially HB/Kar sibling shenanigans. (But it doesn't have to be!) Fellow Chthonics/Gods just being regular jagoffs in the mortal realm is a vibe I like. (Example: Like her and other Psychopomps having a group chat to settle who's covering what that night, etc. Dropping memes or whatnot.). May open her up to ship again but not sure yet. Just started and haven't vibed enough yet and I'm not assuming any of my old partners are interested in picking things back up.
Offered interactions:
Archaeologist by training, can do expeditions or research. BPRD Agent/Director, can be involved in investigating the paranormal & supernatural and arbitrating on it. She's a goddess of the underworld, envoy of the Fates, etc etc, so dealing with the dead, dying, and politics of the other underworlds. So you can play into that. Or just hit me up I can tool something!
Current open post/s:
Open Posts | Memes | Calls | Optional Interest Checker
Anything else?:
Guidelines | Bio | Promo
Tagging: @ourcwnside @voxiiferous @rebelgodking @mystxoak @realmyths and anyone who sees this and wants to fill it out!

♛ EXTRA! by princess adelaide windsor
following in the footsteps of her father, prince james windsor, who recently released his tell-all book ‘SPARE’, three years after the family stepped down from their royal titles, the youngest princess is now telling her side of the story. although now a new york times best seller, the book is being criticized for it’s elaborate fabrications, out of place stories and general nature of entitlement. under the cut are some quotes from the book.
“gran-gran, who you may know as the queen (r.i.p girlie pop) had a corgi fetish, like, it was actually absurd. and anytime i slept at her house, those little wiener looking freakazoids would climb into my bed chambers and hump mr. giggleman mcgee, the stuffed sloth that i’ve had since i was a baby, gifted to me by my lovely godparents david and victoria...beckham, you’ve heard of them, right? anyway, one night, corgi #5 literally wouldn’t stop so i picked it up, carried it outside buckingham palace and let it go into the streets of london to fend for it’s weird, horny self. i helped make the missing puppy posters that the guards hung all over london, but i knew the truth. and i knew that no one fucked with mr. giggleman mcgee.” - chapter 4 ‘the corgis from hell vs. me and mr. giggleman mcgee - i always win.’
“i was devastated. i felt like my whole world was crashing down around me. it was like, totally worse than if they were to ever discontinue the shade jungle red at nars - they gave me an audi instead of a bugatti, when my dear cousin, little miss perfect charlotte, had gotten a bugatti for her sweet sixteen the year before. i knew right then and there that they hated me. so that’s why i drove it into the river thames - not because i was drunk, but because the car was super duper ugly." - adelaide windsor, chapter 6 ‘the not so sweet sixteen’
“it was a friday night at cirque le soir and i totally won’t blow up his spot and say names...so let’s just tall him gugh hrant, was quite literally looking at me like a panther looks at it’s prey. and i was just like obsessed much? so after i did some bumps off of the fingernail of a famous british model with fabulous eyebrows that was like bffs with karl lagerfeld, i won’t name names agian, so let’s call her dara celevigne, i followed him outside when he stepped out to smoke and let’s just say, this man had totally seen better days. it was a really pathetic time, he prob forgot to take his viagra, so i like closed my eyes and just pretended he was his character in notting hill. not everyone can say that they lost their v-card to gugh hrant outside of a pub in london, right?’ . - adelaide windsor, chapter 9 ‘v-card, swiped!’
“they were the most selfish little twits i’ve ever met in my life. who the hell has a twenty second anniversary vow renewal? apparently they do. as if their wedding wasn’t gaudy enough - not that i was there, but aunty cate certainly didn’t look as pretty as my mom did on her wedding day, her frown lines were already out in full force. i was like way too old to be a flower girl, but they insisted on making me one and they put me in this bridgerton looking bullshit that i literally couldn’t breathe in. like you know when you and your friends get held hostage on the coast of morocco on a pirate ship and they like, put a bag over your head and scream at you to give them all your money? that’s totally what this dress felt like. and the worst part? i had just gotten back from my tour of the arctic, so my nips were still completely frostbitten, but aunty cate and uncle willy didn’t care, they wouldn’t even reschedule and forced me to wear that dress that my nips were poking out of the entire time!” - adelaide windsor, chapter 11 ‘as cold as ice’
“after gran died i was like, extra sad-ish i guess. but i got to inherit so much of her fabulous jewelry because i was obviously her favorite. charlotte always thought she was the favorite but charlotte has also always been a dumb twit. after the funeral i was wearing one of the necklaces she gave me and charlotte was just like, totally jealous, so she attacked me and tried to rip the necklace off my neck! of course, she spun it and made it seem like i was fighting with her because she had been spotted on a date with the prince of greece who i literally dated when i was fifteen...like, sloppy seconds much? but that little bitch has always been jealous of me and always made me look like the crazy one. and that was the last day i ever spoke to her. she stuffs her bra, btw. pathetic, right? like, just get a boob job, you loser.” - adelaide windsor, chapter 14 'cousins by blood, enemies by choice’
'when my parents told me and my brothers that we were leaving and relinquishing our royal titles, i was fuming. i mean, nobody in the family pulls off a crown the way i do, so i got a little desperate. if i couldn’t be the princess of the uk, i was totally going to be the princess of something. so i started like, banging a bunch of royal dudes - saudi arabia, denmark, spain, japan, belgium, denmark again because he had a hotter older brother that just got divorced, i mean, you name it. i totally became the united nations of royal men. but then i realized, i don’t need a title to be royal, i’m literally the most perfect human ever. so i made the move, titles left behind, and i’ve made a name for myself here. sure, i’ve only been in a few t.v shows, but world domination is totally on the way. wait, you guys saw euphoria right? how good did my tits look in it? see! there was no lasting damage left behind from the frostbite incident!’ - adelaide windsor, chapter 18 'america and the beautiful....it’s me, i’m the beautiful.’

HEART'S FATE - CHAPTER 24
*Warning: Adult Content*
"That necklace. What is it? You never take it off."
Martin Hunter touches a finger to the amulet and the gem pulses with heat in time with the beat of Skylar West’s heart.
They lie in Skylar’s bed, unclothed and the young art teacher leans to kiss the smooth brown skin of Martin’s shoulder.
Martin’s scent fills Skylar’s lungs and he lets his eyes roam his form, committing every detail to memory.
There are some things about life on land for which the sea offers no equivalent and lazy mornings in a warm bed are among them.
"My mother gave it to me," Skylar says.
"Tell me about her. Tell me everything."
The open trust in Martin’s expression is more precious than gold to Skylar and rarer, he must take care with it.
"Have you heard of Circe?"
Martin frowns.
"From The Odyssey?"
"The same. She was a real person, if you believe the stories, anyway."
Martin laughs.
"If you believe the stories, so was everyone else in the old myths."
Smiling, Skylar trails his fingers over Martin’s chest.
They lie face to face on their sides, the sheets pooled at their waists and Martin's amusement fades as his eyes travel Skylar’s skin.
"Those aren't tattoos," Martin says, fingertips brushing the faintly iridescent scale patterns just visible on Skylar’s forearms. "Are they?"
"No, they aren't."
Martin blinks and his eyes flick up to Skylar’s, the warm amber of his irises alight with curiosity.
"So, Circe, huh?"
Skylar nods.
"It's said she was the daughter of Helios, the sun god and a sea nymph named Perse. A powerful sorceress, she's best known for turning men into swine."
Martin snorts.
"Not much of a stretch, sometimes."
"Indeed. But that is merely one example of her talent for shifting shapes. She had many children and those with human fathers became the first merfolk, born of two natures, the sea and the land and with the gift of choice. When we find the one to whom we wish to wed our soul, we may choose to embrace the land and leave the sea or to bestow the gift of the sea upon our human lover."
"You have to choose?"
"No. But our population has always remained small, several thousands at most. Originally, the children of Circe took human mates to prevent inbreeding. Now it's merely tradition for the eldest of each house to do so."
"You said the eldest child inherits the throne. If your mom's the queen, that means your dad was human?"
"Originally, yes. He was born in Norway in the early half of the 18th century."
"In the early...?"
"Around 1725, we think. He wasn't sure of the exact year but..."
With a shallow gasp, Martin sits up.
"Seventeen..."
Martin chokes and doubles over, coughing.
Skylar rubs his back between his shoulder blades.
When he recovers, he draws a ragged breath and blinks watering eyes at Skylar.
"How the fuck old are you?"
"I was born in 1897," Skylar says.
"You're immortal?"
Skylar smiles.
"Not immortal, no. The oldest mer-folk I'm aware is a few years shy of seven hundred and probably won't live to see that number. After such a long life, we tend not to draw out our decline. Once the aches and pains of old age begin to outweigh the joys, we bid the world farewell on good terms."
Martin thinks about this for a moment and Skylar takes his hand.
"You see why, more often than not, it is our human lovers who join us in the waves, they, too, are blessed with long life once they've taken the gift of the sea. We, on the other hand, will share a human life-span if we choose to walk on land."
Slowly, Martin withdraws his fingers from Skylar’s grasp, his expression gradually going cold, like the sun dimmed by clouds.
"This is impossible, then," Martin says.
"What is?"
Martin moves to sit on the edge of the bed, facing away from Skylar.
"Us."
"I don't follow."
Martin’s shoulders hunch.
"You're the heir to the throne, so of course you'll return to the sea. That's what you're looking for, isn't it? A bride to take back home, one who can give you heirs of your own. You're just killing time with me."
Skylar frowns at Martin’s back.
"You're wrong and you're right."
Brow furrowed, Martin twists to look at Skylar.
"What do you mean?"
"You asked about my necklace. The truth is, it's a curse."
"A curse?"
"Not all love stories are fairy tales, even among the Mer-people. My father may have been born human but he hated his own kind. He believed all humans were inherently corrupt and would always turn to violence and destruction when the chance arose. For him, it was an easy choice to join my mother in the sea. His hatred for humanity did not wane with time, however. Instead, with industrialization, it intensified to the point he believed a war with the land was inevitable, ironically proving himself right about his own kind."
"What happened? If there was a war with the mer-folk, I missed that day of history class."
"No, there was no war. As my mother's consort, my father was her general. What 'forces' we have, he commanded. He plotted to overthrow the throne and take the crown for himself. Fortunately, he was... stopped."
"Stopped?"
Martin lifts his brows at Skylar, who smiles at his natural astuteness.
"You think you have wronged your father? To save my mother, I betrayed mine to his death."
"It sounds like you didn't have much choice."
Martin has turned back to face Skylar and this time it's he who reaches and gives the young man’s hand a sympathetic squeeze.
"Is the curse a punishment?"
Skylar fiddles with the amulet.
He had been wearing it so long, he is hardly conscious of its weight any longer.
"No, it's not a punishment. More a lesson or a precaution, maybe. I think my mother was troubled by the apparent ease with which I delivered my father to his fate. I think it gave her cause to wonder what sort of king I'd make. She placed this gem about my neck and banished me to the land, where I must walk until, as you rightly guessed, I find a 'pure heart' and return therewith to break my mother's spell."
"Spell?"
Skylar nods.
"She was heartbroken by my father's betrayal. Like you Wolves, we Mer-folk share a deep bond with our chosen mates. Unable to bear the pain otherwise, she turned herself to stone and even now sits as a statue upon the throne, guarding it and hence the line of succession."
Martin shakes his head.
"Thank you for telling me this but the problem remains. Why are you wasting time with me when you should be out searching for this 'pure heart?'
""Ah, I haven't explained that bit, have I? The amulet's purpose is trifold, you see. It prevents me from returning home, allows me to live upon the land and also, according to my mother, at least, will guide me to the one I seek."
"So, you're waiting for it to give you a sign or something?"
Skylar smiles and sighs.
It seems Martin is determined to be dense.
"No, Martin. I'm no longer seeking a 'pure heart.' According to the amulet... I've found him."
His eyes widen and he shakes his head again.
"No. I'm too old for games of love, Sky. And even if it were true, I'd never leave my kids."
"I know," Skylar says gently. "And I would never ask you to."
"But you said..."
Smiling, Skylar move a little closer and smooths his hands over the sides of Martin’s face.
"I've been searching without knowing what I really sought for a long time. Now, I've finally found something I want and I'm not about to give it up. I'll find another way to break the curse, I'll abdicate my position as heir and the crown will pass to my eldest sister. My mother is not cruel, she would not deny me happiness. And I shall be more than happy to enjoy what remains of my life with you."
"Sky..."
Martin blinks back tears.
"It's too soon to talk like that. You can't give up everything for someone you've only known a few months."
"Maybe you're right or maybe the heart knows better than the head. Fortunately, there's no rush. Now you know everything but nothing needs to change. For the moment, let's focus on you and on taking care of this paternity business, shall we? Let me see the list of doctors again."
Wiping his eyes with the back of his hand, Martin unlocks and passes Skylar his cell-phone.
Martin has been upset the night before after receiving the list and seeing that none of the labs were within a hundred miles and several were in neighboring states.
"This one," Skylar says, tapping the screen. "Dr. Braden Howard of Bodega Bay. We'll make a vacation of it, a little trip to the sea. I've been away from salt water for far too long and it will give you the chance to see me in my natural element."
Martin lets Skylar pull him back down into bed with him.
"I can't just take the kids out of school," Martin mutters, still unwilling to submit entirely.
"Sure you can. People bring their children on vacations all the time."
Martin frowns.
"Are you using your voice on me?"
"It's a reasonable argument, my dear, not magic." Skylar says, kissing Martin’s shoulder and sliding his hand down to his lover’s waist. "What do you say?"
With a few more sniffles, Martin nods and allows himself to rest in Skylar’s embrace.
It makes the young art teacher quite happy and he would lie like that the whole day, if time and duty permitted it.
Unfortunately, neither does.
Nothing Skylar had told Martin was a lie but there is another reason he wanted to visit the sea.
He had glimpsed storm petrels twice more in the past week.
It seems someone, probably one of his sisters, wants to talk to him and this will give him the perfect opportunity to give them the good news.
Perhaps they can help him find another way to break the curse and then, with a bit of luck, one of them will be queen.

Jericho Reginald Morrison – Moonknight Prince
Jericho Andrei Morrison née Reginald, Duke of Eosia, is a minor fictional character that is introduced in Worldcraft: Original. Consider him as the father of Isabella, because he is an Eurasian person. He was the main protagonist, along with Queen Arianna and his friends in Two Lights, the prequel of Worldcraft. Jericho is the future version of King Frederic of Corona Kingfom, in terms of appearance and behavior.
Etymology
Some theories contend that the Canaanite word for "moon" (Yareaẖ) or the name of the lunar deity Yarikh, Chang'e's brother, are the origins of Jericho's Hebrew name, Yeriẖo, means "city of moon". Which is generally believed to come from the Canaanite word reaẖ ("fragrant"). Jericho has a wealth of historic roots or name, in Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin alike, the bible or famous boy names based on the light.
Physiology
Despite his Eurasian ancestry, Jericho's skin tone was pale brown, and the manner of his father was German, British, Ilocano, Tagalog, and Indonesian. Jericho's hair color was jet black, like his mother was of Basque, French, American, Chinese, and Spaniard lineages. The most common eye color is brown chocolate. His eye color was changed from brown to blue, making him of Eurasian descent as well. He also added birthmarks on his forehead and neck. His skin color was changed from yellowish to light brown. His birthday was March 18, 2975, which is Awkward Moments Day, Forgive Mom and Dad Day, Global Recycling Day, Goddess Of Fertility Day, National Supreme Sacrifice Day, National Biodiesel Day, and Act Happy Day.
Abilities
According to Poliahu, a goddess knows that Jericho and Arianna have disorders of the same brokenheartedness between Tangled the series and Worldcraft, which were started until she arrived with her daughter Rapunzel, her son-in-law Eugune, and her adopted son Varian in Reinachos after three years of experience with Berbanian and Terran characters in Reinachos. He restored his moonlight powers when Arianna reunited after separation, and Rapunzel's comeback against Roxana Maldado and her allies He was enhanced by Khonsu, Mahina, Chang'e, Loki, and Sigyn after he was considered the Moon Warrior of Eurasia.
Besides his inherit, reincarnated as George IV, Jericho is one of only a few Earth Responsibly characters who have rejection-sensitive dysphoria (RSD), which is when a person feels intense emotional pain related to rejection. A big part of his fear of rejection may be our fear of experiencing hurt and pain. Loss of his strength, durability, stamina, mana, mental, emotional, and physical health affects him. He may also have anthropophobia if he loses his wife or has a loss bond with a wife with a strong connection to his soulmate through force and dharma, as well as bioenergy. Therefore, by leaving a person feeling more vulnerable, he loses his intelligence without Arianna.
Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) or (SepAnx) is an anxiety disorder in which an individual experiences excessive anxiety regarding separation from home or from people to whom the individual has a strong emotional attachment. Jericho went to depart for Queen Arianna as her promise to her comeback somewhere; it was she who suffered from separation anxiety, not her two children, Gwendoline and Joanne, and Emily and Sarah, respectively. Jericho didn't trigger his moon powers without her, due to his own force and bioenergy, which made him a more gentlemanly and still ageless man.
Despicable of this human being, he lacks magical powers; he learned the craft despite being very intelligent, but he was possessed by fairies because he had night vision and superhuman strength towards all. His magic was built from materials to assist combat through Karakuri magic, a magic made of everything in nature. Due to his life, he helps Sarah Blair, his best friend, and shares her abilities against larger fauna and aliens.
Jericho was linked by Queen Arianna; both are considered "Two Lights." He can be combined to form larger machines by building himself or with his claymore, a larger sword, or later his clutch wire. Jericho reveals that his first legendary weapon, based on Wild Hearts and Attack on Titan attack-style moves, is endemic to the Hawaiian Republic or State of Hawaii and called Karakuri-pou (Hawaiian: pō, Japanese: からくり/絡繰り/karakuri). This legendary weapon was Enn, or Ancient Astronauts, in origin and crafted by Hephaestus and Juno to be sealed in the Hawaiian Islands to prevent it from being used by Pele, the goddess of volcanoes in Hawaii. A fictitious item combining elements from Attack on Titan and Wild Hearts, this weapon was a hook dagger. The blade was aiming for stabbing or slicing, while the right or left hand struggled with a long hook consisting of claws or talons.
Unfortunately, this weapon sought after to convert the Native Hawaiians and Ilocano people by the Japanese government into Shintoism led to the downfall of the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches in the Hawaiian Republic. And used by kaguras, a dancer, to perform a ritual ceremonial dance for any gods in the Japanese Empire and Hawaiian Islands. Back in the past, this weapon was Chang'e's secondary weapon, used for her threats from Nergal, Satan, and Surtur; there are antagonistic deities in Muspelheim.
Chang'e passed the weapon to Tsukiyomi, a Japanese moon god, and the mortal named Catherine of Alexandria, a saint and the princess who is the first user, and some Eurasian users possess the Karakuri-pou, or Harpoon Dagger. Jericho Morrison is the descendant of Elizabeth II and the Marcos family, the first Asians to use this weapon, and they only hope to destroy the threats in Hawaii and the Galapagos Islands from Hawaiian invasive species and villains. This weapon was converted to Moon Gungnir, a long-range melee weapon and variant replica of Gungnir as Odin's first weapon and Chang'e's only weapon, due to Terran origin. Jericho Morrison only possessed the moonstone opal, lunar water, and solar eclipse and turned into Lunarian Idol as a result of killing his former old friends by Anningan Bautista, a demon from Aotearoa during the Muromachi period.
Karakuri-pou is a mysterious dual weapon consisting of a harpoon gauntlet, and the dagger, as a representative of Chang'e's secondary weapon, is a legendary light melee weapon that excels at landing multiple hits up close and smoothly dodging attacks due to its high aerial that is attached to the enemy who sticks the harpoon dart. The enemy drains this gauge over time to let Jericho grapple onto the creature and perform numerous aerial attacks; he then performs the final attack called "Para sa Bulan". Jericho stops after he jumps and lunges with his dagger with the power of moonlight, performing himself a crescent moon-shaped blade dance, and piercing to above before him and thumps stronger, causing massive amounts of damage and torpor, even an instant dismemberment effect like Star Wars' lightsaber as a final blow for his wife.
Queen Arianna represents the sun as her pistol sword, while Jericho Morrison represents the moon as he wields a dagger and cable, according to Hephaestus. He was reborn as King of the British Empire, and he was the foster child of a Hawaiian moon goddess called Mahina.
Jericho was possessed by Moonstone Opal and Karakuri-pou.
Personality
He was desperate to connection with the royal family and the wildlife. Like the unorthodox Buenaventura family, considered the magic connects the humans and all species in Planet Earth. Jericho was alone and he was happy when in the celebration. He was responsible for his family and role for Isabella. Jericho is the father and lovely dad of Isabella and Nicolette, as well as his adopted sons, Joringel and Leviticus, for his adventures. He was a master architect and used his forbidden magic of the art of architecture by Japanese people due to a friendship connection with Ichika Cooper, a Japanese-British student and descendant of some masters of karakuri technology, a jutsu or Japanese mystic skill and Maori mystic skill.
He was identity of himself as Eurasian and brown mixed white child, with natural blue colored eyes by his parents and his allies. Unlike Yosef, he wa introvert and anxious person towards who have been like his color eyes. Jericho Morrison is the best student and supportive classmate in San Diego University in California, along with Princess Arianna Solvacorvauld, as Queen Arianna.
Jericho is very bitter and hostile man towards fierce evil guardians like Elder Dragon named Dreadknife Nigrostra, to other undiscovered guardians behind his own life and journey fo that he was. He was friendly from animals being as nature lover, like Arianna due to the force was initiated. When it comes to ferocious evil guardians like Elder Dragon Dreadknife Nigrostra and other unidentified guardians that were responsible for his own life and adventure, Jericho is a highly resentful and hateful man. He was kind to animals and a lover of nature like Arianna because the force had been launched.

Okay, don't be mad... But the eye is the main thing. But not just the eye color. It's the eye color, plus the tattoo-glyph-thing over her eye resembling the claw marks on the beast eye, plus her eye only unsealing in the one ending where she outlives Maliketh, plus the eye only featuring in the scene where she's talking about unleashing destined death upon the foolish player.
In my experience, it's usually the eye thing that gets people thinking along those lines. But there are a few smaller items that... Well, I can't quite call it evidence, I can only say that it fits. More below.
Melina claims that the Lands are in need of "death, indiscriminate." This mirror's the GEQ's title of "Godslayer." Death applied fairly, without exception, necessarily implies the death of gods (or at least the loss of their immortality).
According to the code, Melina is Marika's daughter. I've seen most theorists label her the youngest, possibly another child of Radagon and possibly an offshoot like Millicent. However, her use of Ancient Erdtree Incantations (from Godfrey's era) seems to dispute that. There's also the fact that no one (not even Gideon, who knows of some of the more obscure shardbearers) ever alludes to her existence. Rather than her being the youngest (and therefore known to the likes of Ranni and Gideon), I think it's more likely that she was Marika's firstborn who got the Nameless King treatment following her failed rebellion.
Melina has been burned before. Whether her spectral form is the result of being disembodied or straight-up killed, the burn scars prove that she burned at some point before the events of the game. Again, this would not fit with her being Marika's youngest. But it would make perfect sense for the GEQ -- either she attempted to burn the Erdtree, or she was consumed by the flames of Destined Death following her duel with Maliketh. It is worth noting that the Erdtree may also have been burned at some point before the main game -- there's a massive scar of some sort on the trunk, and Leyndell is already dusted with ashes when we arrive.
The second Melina gets her memories back, she's down to commit the Cardinal Sin and burn the Erdtree. During our earlier travels, she seemed to be going off of the vague feeling that she had a mother and a job to do, and that she might remember as she approached the Erdtree. Once she remembers who she really is (whoever that may be), she switches to "to hell with what Mom wants, I'm going to commit the highest blasphemy against the Golden Order and return indiscriminate death to the lands." Seems in character for the GEQ.
Melina's clear reverence for life -- especially birth -- would actually fit perfectly with her being the GEQ. While the GEQ is presented as a bringer of death, we see the results that unending life -- or living in death -- have had upon the lands. In this case, death represents a return to the natural order, an end to the suffering of the undead, and an end to the unchecked power of gods.
One more thing. While many people have pointed out the similarities between Melina's fighting style and the Black Knife Assassins' fighting style... Am I the only one who thinks that they both fight like Maliketh? While this is far from hard evidence, I think it makes a compelling narrative, and it fits with the game's themes of family tragedy.
Melina, Marika's firstborn, is raised to inherit her mother's Order. Because Marika expects her children to be conquerors and champions, Melina is trained by Maliketh, her uncle and quite possibly the most dangerous man on the continent.
As Melina is groomed to inherit the Order (remember, the GEQ was an empyrean chosen by the Fingers), she begins to see the flaws inherent in the system. She sees the damage that the removal of the Rune of Death is already doing, and she perceives just how much worse it could get.
As the Gloam Eyed Queen, she attempts to overthrow her mother, burn the Erdtree, and return fair and indiscriminate death to the cycle of death and rebirth. But she fails, slain by her teacher and surrogate father Maliketh. As much as he loved his apprentice, his loyalty to Marika and her Order was stronger.
Towards the end of his life, after centuries of attempting to contain the blight of those who live in death, Maliketh sees the flaws in the Order, now gaping cracks, that Melina saw all those years ago.
"Forgive me, Marika... The Golden Order... cannot be restored."
Now confronted with the endpoint of the chain of events began by the removal of the Rune of Death, Maliketh realizes that Melina was right -- she was right, and he murdered her for it.
Again, just a headcanon. But it seems in character for this family.
I think that's an important part of Fromsoft lore -- taking the little snippets of hard evidence that we're given and spinning them into a narrative that we personally find compelling. While a lot of people (myself included) find the narrative of Melina as the GEQ to be a compelling one, I don't think anyone (I hope not) is saying that it's the only proper interpretation or that the lore is "solved."
I know I've been an ass about it in the past, and I am sorry to the people that had actually put thought into the theory and weren't echoing YT videos. But if anyone still wants to share, I'd like to hear why folks think Melina is the Gloam Eyed Queen.
If the argument is simply that her closed eye colour is gloam-y, I'm sorry, I'll need some more reasons accompanying it to take it into account.

Rowaelin Month, Day 20
Playing with Magic @rowaelinscourt
Rowaelin Month Masterlist//Main Masterlist//Fluff//1462 words
“Where in the world could she be?” Aelin asked frantically, running her hands through her hair anxiously.
Rowan shook his head. “Aelin… I’m so sorry… but I don’t think we’ll ever find her. She’s gone for good.”
Aelin gasped. “She can’t be. Don’t give up, Rowan; she’s our little girl!”
A mournful sigh left Rowan’s mouth. “Fireheart, I know you love her, and I do too, but we have to be realistic.”
Aelin covered her face with her hands. “I miss her already.”
Rowan’s lips twitched, and Aelin knew he was holding back a laugh. She pressed her own lips together to keep her face as melancholy as possible.
“Me too,” was all he could manage, hand going to his mouth to cover a snort.
Aelin grinned. “This is all your fault. If you had never suggested hide and seek, we never would have lost Nora in the first place.”
“My fault? How could you?” Rowan clutched his chest dramatically.
Aelin turned away, crossing her arms. “I don’t think I can stand to look at you anymore, you bastard. Leave me be.”
She watched in the mirror she was facing as Rowan sent a wink her way. “As you wish, my queen. I’ll pack my things immediately.”
Rowan turned and started for the door. Instead of passing the pair of shoes sticking out from under the bed, he paused. “Are these…” He paused dramatically. “Nora’s shoes?”
“All we have left of her,” Aelin replied, sniffling.
A muffled wheezing sound came from under the bed, and Aelin and Rowan exchanged a smile.
“I better get them, dear. If we leave them here, someone could trip over them.”
Aelin finally turned around. “As you wish.”
Upon hearing that the shoes were going to be picked up, they retracted farther under the bed, frantically trying to disappear. But Rowan was too fast for the shoes. He grabbed them, pulling a squealing child out from under the bed.
“Nora!” Aelin cried. “My gods, I thought we’d lost you forever!”
Nora, still on her back with her shiny red shoes in Rowan’s hands, stuck her tongue out at her mother. “No you didn’t, Mom, you’re the worst actor ever.”
Aelin gasped in indignation. “You slanderous little worm. Why, I’ll teach you to speak to the queen in that manner.”
She marched over, suppressing a grin once more as Nora squealed again and wiggled her feet free from Rowan’s grasp. She tried to stand, but Aelin swooped down on her and picked her up effortlessly.
“What will the punishment be?” Aelin asked in mock reprimand. “A visit to the dungeons? One thousand push-ups? Chocolate for dinner?”
“Mm, that last one sounds pretty good to me,” Nora said thoughtfully, dangling in Aelin’s arms.
“Mala spare me,” Rowan muttered.
Mother and daughter sent matching smirks to Rowan, only smiling harder as he said something along the lines of, “I hate it when you two do that.”
“Well, now that hide and seek has brought us the tragedy of thinking our daughter was gone forever”—Nora stuck out her tongue again—“why don’t we find something else to do?”
There was no pause between Aelin’s question and the squirming little girl saying, “Oh, we can practice magic. Please? Please, please, please?” Nora stared right into Aelin’s eyes. “Please, Mama,” she whispered.
Aelin laughed. “Of course we can. But we better get out of the castle, away from collateral.”
Nora nodded seriously, probably unsure of what “collateral” meant but too stubborn to admit it.
Aelin set her daughter on the ground. “Race you down to the courtyard,” she said.
And Nora was off, sprinting out the door and down the stairs.
Rowan chuckled. “She’s a handful, alright.”
“But she’s our handful,” Aelin said primly.
Rowan snorted. “You’re so cheesy.”
Aelin flashed a smile. “Race you down to the courtyard,” she repeated in a soft murmur, a flirty undertone in her voice.
Both of them knew the fastest way was not the stairs, as Nora had gone, but out the window and straight down. Rowan could fly, of course, so Aelin made sure to swing a foot out and knock him off his feet before jogging to the window. She smirked to herself as Rowan cursed her name.
Aelin may not be able to fly, but agility was second nature to her. She kept herself in shape, always training with Rowan, working for every muscle on her body, pushing herself to get better. Aelin hadn't quite been prepared for the pregnancy with Nora, and she’d had many days where helplessness had wracked her brain until the only thought in her head was that she was weak.
After all, some scars never heal.
But she’d finally given birth to the joy that was their daughter, and Aelin had started training all over again. She and Rowan had discussed more children, and firmly decided to wait a while longer until Aelin was ready again, which is why they only had the one child, nearly eight years old.
And the past eight years had made Aelin more physically able than she’d ever been, a feat of nature. She may not have wings as her mate did, but the way she climbed down the many stories, hanging from terraces and dropping from ledges, could almost be considered flying.
Aelin was nearing the bottom when a white-tailed hawk sailed out of the bedroom window. She went as far as to raise her middle finger before dropping the last story and a half, rolling, and rising with ethereal grace.
Aelin was too busy smirking at her husband as he dived to the ground to notice the little munchkin charging her way. One minute she was mouthing loser to the skies, as immature as ever, and the next a small form was clinging to her side.
“I almost won!” Nora yelled, desperate for some form of credit.
Aelin grinned and ruffled the short silver locks she’d inherited from her father. “Yes you did, dear.”
“I want to set something on fire,” Nora declared blatantly.
“Just like her mother,” an amused, but slightly concerned, voice said from beside them. Rowan had shifted back into his Fae form.
Aelin sent him an innocent smile. “What do you want to set on fire, Nora?”
“Don’t answer that,” Rowan cut in immediately. “Let’s start with something… unlikely to be needed in the future.”
Aelin snorted. “Boring old man,” she said, and Nora giggled, earning a faux wounded expression from Rowan.
Aelin pulled something out of her pocket.
“Tell me that’s not Darrow’s latest decree,” Rowan said in exasperation, already knowing the answer.
Aelin shot him a smile. “Something unlikely to be needed in the future, exactly as you wished, my darling.”
Rowan shook his head, lips twitching slightly.
Aelin unrolled the scroll and held it out, stepping away from Nora. She sent a nod her daughter’s way.
Nora got into defensive position—her parents’ child for sure—and furrowed her brow. She’d played with her magic plenty of times before, but she was still learning how to control it, particularly the small amount of fire she’d inherited from her mother. She had a far greater amount of ice powers from Rowan, and better control over them as well—which made burning things all the more fun, in Aelin’s opinion.
Nora stared holes into the parchment, but nothing happened. Rowan came up behind her and bent down to whisper something in her ear, and the tenderness of the gesture melted Aelin’s heart. Nora nodded in determination once Rowan was done and squinted.
Her focus seemed to have improved with Rowan’s instruction, for smoke started rising from the paper. Nora smiled in delight and the whole thing burst into flames without warning. Aelin grinned and held the scroll as it turned into ash in her hand.
“Lovely, Nora.”
Darrow would not be pleased. What a productive day this was turning into.
Nora clapped her hands excitedly. She spun around, the ground starting to turn frosty at her feet. The wind whipped, and Aelin shared a proud look with Rowan as ice scread across the courtyard.
Nora’s power was limited, and the ice couldn’t quite reach the edges of the courtyard. Aelin felt Rowan’s ice freeze the whole thing over thicker in addition to expanding it, and all of a sudden, they were standing on their own little ice rink.
Nora squealed, quite possibly unaware her father had helped out. She laughed—then yelped as she slid onto her bottom. Nora quickly got back to her feet, just as capable as her father and persistent as her mother.
Aelin slid lazily over to Rowan, still watching their daughter spin and skate around. “I love you.”
He smiled, lifting a thumb to Aelin’s cheek. “I love you too.”

Royal Family Attends Prince David First Polo Training of the Year - Countess of Larch Joins Her Family After Month of Being Apart
The polo season is has just started, and HRH Prince David has made it into his school team! The soon-to-become Crown Prince of Willow Creek has inherited the passion for polo from his father, HRH Prince Cristobal Duke of Hemlock who watched proudly the first day of training of their son’s team! Her Majesty Queen Margaret joined her husband, as well as some members of the royal family. We are used to spot the royal family spending quality time together, but it’s been a while since we saw them enjoying a sunny day at the Polo Club. However, the biggest surprice of the day was spotting the Queen’s sister next to the family. HRH Princess Isabella, Countess of Larch has been reportedly distant from her family, but it seems things are getting better between the Countess and the Queen. Two days ago, the Palace announced that Princess Isabella has been appointed chairman of the coronation committee by the Queen herself. According to our source close to the royal family “Princess Isabella used to take care of almost every royal event at the Palace. She was the one behind the Queen’s Wedding and even behind her father’s funeral, but ever since the passing of her father, HRH has been very distant, not only from the Queen but also from the rest of the family, so it’s good to see her back with siblings enjoying a family day.” The new mom has been seen trying to make her daughter HH Princess Eugenie take a nap, and then even breastfeeding her right there at the Polo Club!
We don’t usually find a royal breastfeeding in public, and it seems Princess Isabella may be the first royal mom doing it. The picture of the Queen’s sister feeding her family has made it to social media, where women from all over the realm are showing their support to the young mother. “A lot of people were shocked to see her breastfeeding her baby in public, but most women find it so natural and beautiful. Pepople around the realm weren’t picturing Princess Isabella as a mother quite yet, but now the Princess has changed everyone’s mind” said our source. Another big surprice of the day was the presence of Prince David’s girlfriend at the Polo Club! Miss Olivia De la Paz joined the royal family this morning, and the couple was spotted sharing some real PDA in public for the first time.
But how is it the Miss De la Paz can be so confortable around the royal family? It seems this isn’t the first time Prince David’s girlfriend joines the royal family on a private moment such as this one. “Olivia has already been to the Palace in several occasions. The last time she’s been to the Palace, she was invited to attend Prince Arthur’s 11th birthday by the Prince’s parents” claims our source. Rumor has it, both the Queen and the Prince Consort really like Miss De la Paz, and have been very welcoming since day one. Even HM Queen Sofia, the Queen Mother already adores the young girl, so it seems things are looking good for the teenage couple. Now we are getting very close to the big day for both the Queen and her son who will officially become monarch and heir. We cannot wait to see all the magnificence of the crown being displayed!

Things I learned while re-watching Star Plus Mahabharata (Part 19/many):
Kansa’s death scene is A+, 10/10.
Boy Krishna literally looks like Devaki!
I know where else I have seen Boy Krishna! He plays Pradyumna in Radhakrishna!
Arjun, Bhim and Drupad have no chill and I am here for this rage. Let’s keep this going until the war starts.
It is very sad that in Kalyug a woman has to fend for her own honour when ideally it should be a joint effort by men and women.
The only appropriate reaction to a man attempting to dishonour your wife was shown by Krishna and by Ram before him = decapitation. I will not be hearing arguments against this at this time.
We should not be resorting to war. WELL YOU AND YOUR NEPHEWS SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE THAT GAME OF DICE KAKASHRI VIDUR.
I am here for this Panchali. What did you decide? What did Madhav have to say?
Panchali is against the peace proposal and honestly I am on her side.
Panchali is 100% right. The decision to fight or not is Panchali’s. Not the Pandavas. Because for every action and reaction of men, it is the women and their children who suffer. She is 100/100 right.
At least she has Krishna on her side who has absolutely no qualms in pretending anything other than the fact that he really badly wants this war. This is literally what he was put on earth to do.
In the actual story, Duryodhan offers to put Krishna up in Dushasan’s palace which was allegedly bigger and better than the main palace. And Krishna declines because he wishes to stay in Vidur’s palace but StarBharat fails to show why. It’s because Krishna’s aunt, Kunti, lives with Vidur and I think it is the most natural thing in the world that he would want to stay with his aunt rather than with these random cousins by marriage.
I am sorry sweetie (Krishna) there is no dharm ka phool in Angaraj Karna’s heart. He's a social climber.
Aye hai laddoo Gopal really be here turning all this karela into laddoos.
Nice that they gave some screen time to Vidur’s wife. Now they need to do this 200x with all the female characters.
Krishna is…right? Yudhishthir should have been crowned Yuvraj the moment Pandu died and the Pandavas came to Hastinapur. Dhritarashtra was a placeholder king and his son cannot inherit this throne. It is a different matter altogether that Dhritarashtra was the rightful king and that they should have never crowned Pandu as king.
Krishna coming at the Kauravas with one banger after another. Their behaviour towards Draupadi cannot be forgiven. And not just Duryodhan, every man in that Sabha was culpable.
Is Duryodhan really going to bind Krishna with those big ass fake looking gold chains? This seems like a bad idea.
Krishna is asking for five villages for the five Pandavas. But Duryodhan has nothing if not his principles.
Karna is sooo annoying. Oh my god, we get it. You would give your life for your rich pals.
At least Bhishma, Vidur and Dronacharya are showing some good sense now. Long overdue.
Oho! Even Dhritarashtra has the good sense to agree to this five village business.
Lol, I can’t wait for Duryodhan to try and imprison Krishna.
I’m also waiting for the needle’s head worth of land line. Will StarBharat oblige?
StarBharat has obliged! Duryodhan will not concede a needle’s worth of land.
Krishna looks...mildly discomfited.
Arrest this cowherd LMAAOOO
The big ass fake looking gold chains are here.
The soldiers can’t even get up, let alone pick up the chains. How underwhelming.
Is StarBharat also going to show me the wondrous scene where Dhritarashtra temporarily gets his vision? Coz that would be cool.
Oh finally someone (Karna) has the sense to say that this is not how one behaves with a peace messenger.
Chal, gwale! I am ded 🤣
What happened to the Vishwaroop scene in the middle of the Hastinapur court??
Very attracted right now to moustached Krishna dressed like a guard.
Calm down, think of Jesus.
Is Krishna also dressed like Vikarna and Karna?
Accha, Drona also.
And Pitamaha.
This is fun!
Mamashri Shakuni 😂
Kakashri Vidur. I could do this forever.
SRJ looks amazing as all these characters. Even Dhritarashtra.
Where did Krishna transport them? On the banks of the Ganga? Dwarka?
Did Krishna strike Duryodhan’s thigh?
YAAAAS
Dhritarashtra can see the Vishwaroop!
Apparently, after this, Krishna gave him the option of retaining his sight. And Dhritarashtra said that after having seen the Vishwaroop to see other sights on earth was simply not worth it.
Should’ve kept his sight for the war but he has his satellite dish Sanjay.
Okay Krishna has left. This was anticlimactic.
Oh cool, Krishna is going to play the Kunti card.
I simply love Kunti’s character and every scene with Krishna and Kunti in the same frame is simply golden.
Kunti’s entire personality is so on brand with the no chill Yadav mood.
Please do not for one second pretend that you altruistically care about the child you abandoned at birth. You’re doing this to save the skins of the five sons you actually give a damn about.
At least Radha is slightly more realistic about Karna than Kunti is.
Radha and Vrushali are like, how do you know this, Vaasudev? Vaasudev (probably): I drink and I know things.
Nothing will astonish me as much as my progression in life going from a Karna Stan to an absolute Karna Skeptic.
Karna is a social climber. That is all I have to say on this topic.
The only thing admirable about Karna’s character is his loyalty towards Duryodhan.
Also, where is this conversation between Krishna and Karna taking place? On the banks of the Ganga? Yamuna? The sea beach at Dwarka?
Where is the big speech Krishna gives to Karna? Where he promised that Draupadi will marry him (HA, AS IF) and that Yudishthira will crown him King of Hastinapur (that fool might just) if he fights on behalf of the Pandavas.
Are all Radhas this terrible? Are they all hell bent on stealing for themselves things that do not belong to them? Why won’t this awful woman own up to the fact that she’s not Karna’s biological mom?
Okay Karna is back on the banks of this mysterious water body.
I will have you all know that Karna may be suddenly having feels for Kunti, but was totally okay to sacrifice her during the Varnavat episode.
Oh goddamn it, Starbharat!
Hitting me right in the feels when I least expect it.
Karna thinking back to all the times he was with Arjun, not knowing that they were brothers.
I’m not going to lie. Karna is in an impossible spot. Damned if he did, damned if he didn’t.
Now I am remembering why child me Stanned Karna so much.
I may not like Karna but at least I respect him for supporting Duryodhan.
I can’t wait for Queen of Resting Bitch Face, Kunti, to come and beg for her sons’ lives from Karna, when she literally does not give a damn if Karna lives or dies. Kunti knows which side her bread is buttered. Such a Yadav.
Oh this Karna-Vrushali scene is A+, 10/10. I really wish StarBharat gave more screen time to its women.
Okay I feel bad for Kunti also, mostly because I love Kunti.
But let us not pretend that given a choice between her Parth and this veritable stranger, she will always always choose Arjun.
She had to do this for Kuntibhoj, her poor father, who loved her so much, who couldn’t have children and all he ever wanted was a child of his own, so much so that he begged Shoorsena to give him one of his daughters.
I think what’s worse is that Kunti knew. Right from the beginning. And she stayed quiet. That was not right.
StarBharat really be here trying to make me feel for Karna again. Smh.
How tf will Karna be a Pandava? When Kunti wasn’t even mf married to Pandu when she gave birth to Karna?
Karna talking about Duryodhana while the Dharmecha shlok plays in the background. Chills.
I have a story called The tree stump on Karna, in case you are interested.
Yeah Kunti f*cked up here. I support Karna. He is nothing but a prisoner of birth.
Pretty big of Karna to ask Kunti not to tell his brothers. Uncharacteristic of a social climber. He’s not a bad soul, I guess.
I don’t know if it’s Kunti’s dialogue or her acting or the background score but I am tearing up. No assholes here.
Kunti might as well cry because if Karna refuses to call her Mata until Arjun dies, she’s never going to hear it from him. Coz he will be dead.
It’s okay, Kunti, you can relax. You got what you came here for (ish).

I did this as a three part series, because I just can’t get enough Beifong in my life and thinking about them brings me immense joy.
Here’s the first two:
And last but not least:
The Beifong family is the best thing that ever happened to Avatar and quite possibly my life. The thing I love most about them, though, is how human they are. They are the epitome of what happens when life is messy and emotions are raw and people do stupid things and life doesn’t go as expected. Each and every one of them is batshit crazy, and I love them for it. Here’s my take on the illustrious Beifongs. Last is Su.
Suyin: An Analysis
Oh, Su. What can I say? Su is just as complicated as the rest of the Beifongs. Su is no saint but neither is she a devil. Su is human, and that’s about all there is to it.
Su obviously took her mother’s absence in a very different direction. I would imagine that both Toph and Lin were very excited to welcome Su. However, very shortly Lin is old enough and probably mature enough to watch her, which leaves Toph free to be Chief, which means Su is shortchanged in her time with her mom. I don’t think Toph sat them down one day and was like ok girls I’m going to be spending more time at work so Lin you’re in charge. I think she just slowly wasn’t really needed at home (at least not in a way that computed in her mind) and she just kind of drifted away.
Well if I’m Su and my big sister starts bossing me around I’m like ok no that’s not happening, and she obviously started to resist it. However, saying “I was more of a rebel” is like saying “that ghost pepper is a little spicy”. Like Su, honey, there’s a rebel and there’s criminal enterprise. It’s not the same thing, and even later in life she obviously hasn’t made that connection.
Whether because of her absence, or because she perhaps saw herself in Su, Toph turned a blind eye (pardon the pun). It’s also obvious that Toph isn’t even aware of half the stuff that goes on. And because she’s clueless, Toph probably doesn’t believe Lin when she tells her. Whatever the case, Su is that kid who could do anything or say anything and get away with it, while Big Sister probably sneezes wrong and everyone glares at them, because they’re older and supposed to be more mature. Lin at this point is beyond frustrated with Su.
So here we go, Su steps out of the car and I’m sure Lin is feeling a lot of things. Probably like she failed her little sister, angry because WTF Su, and maybe even a little vindicated. Now Toph will HAVE to pay attention. Su is the dumbest bitch this side of Whale Tail Island, however, and actually thinks that Lin is going to let her walk away. Well of course she’s not, duh. But Su is so full of anger and frustration, that she lashes out.
When I say Su is full of anger and frustration, I mean that as much as Lin kept a lid on it, Su did, too. Su had less time with Toph at home than Lin did, which wasn’t fair. Su had to put up with Lin mothering her, when she wasn’t actually her mother and only a few years older than her. Su had very little direction in her life, from anyone. Su was obviously very impressionable. Those two idiots she was with probably could have convinced her to commit Grand Theft Auto, and it wouldn’t have taken much. If things hadn’t gone down the way they did, Su probably would have ended up dead or as a true villain.
Hm, excuse me while I jot down a story idea.
Anyways, my point is, Su had just as many feelings as Lin, her bottle just looked very different. So in a moment of pure anger she lashes out when Lin tries to arrest her. I believe she regretted it, and here’s why: she’s in Toph’s office with Lin. Had Su been completely devoid of any feeling, she would have run away and never looked back, or at least tried to rationalize it. Toph is obviously fully aware of what went down; she asks both of them what they were thinking, so even though Su’s not saying sorry she’s not sitting there trying to deny it. She knows she got caught. She may not be sorry, but she’s still sitting there in the office. Frankly I give her points for that. Not many, but a few.
If I’m Su, I know I did wrong but I don’t care. So I love to hear Toph ask Lin what she was thinking, too. I’m like ha! Yeah, you tear up that report, Mom! But wait, I have to leave the city? Holy shit, did not see that coming! So now the mom who I didn’t have much time with in the first place and has been largely absent is sending me away to my grandparents (and who knows how well she knew them) where only the Spirits know what’s going to happen then. Well this sucks. Not an excuse for her shitty behavior but it still sucked for her.
So then she goes traipsing around the world to prove to herself she is outside the realm of rules. She finally settles down with Bataar Sr and builds Zaofu. Her ideals still seem to be based on the idea of life without limits, which fits her history. She seems more like someone who creates opportunities than someone who makes a lot of rules. Aiwei calls her the matriarch so she’s not exactly in a position of true political power, at least not in name.
I truly believe Bataar loves Su and that he is a good husband and father. I also believe that for the most part, Su is a good mom. Here’s why: her kids are quite well-adjusted. Except for Bataar Jr who seems to have inherited her impressionable nature. But Wing and Wei are cool and obviously very accomplished, Opal is rather prissy but she does have some good qualities, and Huan is very passionate about his banana art. They’re kind of a fun family. Su tells Korra that she always wished Lin were a part of her life, and I believe her. I really think Su misses her big sister. She and Lin are alike in that what they want most is their family to be intact.
After the fall of the Earth Queen, Su says she doesn’t want to impose her ideals on the nation. Again, she doesn’t like rules, so she's not going to go around telling everyone else what to do. I don’t agree with that decision but it is consistent with her character. Her decision to try and assassinate Kuvira I believe comes from a desire to protect those around her, anger at Kuvira for betraying her and taking her son away from her, and guilt because it was her inaction that precipitated the whole thing in the first place. It’s a stupid ass decision, and is an emotional one. Su seems to be ruled by her emotions, from the first time we see her until the end of the series, which is interesting because she does keep her cool most of the time. Emotional people are like that, though. I’m ok until you make me mad or feel something and now I have to do something about it. Oftentimes they resent the person who made them feel it, and blame them. Su definitely falls into that category. Because she is so governed by her emotions, she tends to rush headlong into things without seeing the long game, or the risks. When she gets caught, she knows she messed up. But now Korra has to come and save her, Su knowing full well she’s not ready. But Korra tries anyways because even though Su is incredibly stupid and selfish, she is a friend and they still care about her. Anyone who watches Dragons Race to the Edge, it reminds me of Snotlout, when Astrid says he’s a muttonhead, but he’s their muttonhead. For better or worse, Su has become one of them.
Quite frankly, I like Su. I think her biggest faults are that she tends to follow her emotions which gets her into trouble and she doesn’t really like to acknowledge when she’s wrong, even though she definitely knows she is. Neither of those things are traits that I would consider unforgivable. I don’t think she and I would be bosom buddies but she is an interesting person. I would be endlessly frustrated with her and probably tell her I told you so a lot. But Su is there when it counts. She defeats P’li and helps defeat Kuvira. She helps save Korra and teaches her metal bending, and she is quite cheerful. As far as Lin forgiving her I feel like that was more for Lin than Su, just like forgiveness is for everyone. For anyone who says Lin deserves better, keep in mind this is her little sister who she loves very much. There’s history there and families are messy and complicated and I for one trust Lin. Lin also doesn’t just jump in, she tells Su she just won’t show up and attack her. They only become more involved because that’s how things played out. Lin is very sincere when she tells Su that she loves her, and it almost seems like the first time Lin has said those words out loud, based on Su’s expression.
Su may not have known or believed it before that. Right or wrong, good or bad, Su is family, and families are stupid and crazy. Like I said before, Su is no saint, but she’s no devil either. She makes shitty decisions and yes people have to keep coming to her rescue, but I think her heart is in the right place. I really do.

Read through light novel vol. 16. Random thoughts.
"Who is this OC looking f**kboy?"
Those were genuinely my first thoughts upon seeing the art of Takt on the throne. And it would seem my immediate dislike was not unfounded.
Seriously though, everything about him is like someone's self-insert original character for their shitty power fantasy Shield Hero fanfic.
"He dresses really cool, like all modern with jeans and pockets, and he can use all the holy weapons and vassal weapons, and his level is above 300, and he has a harem of totally hot powerful women, and he's the king of his own country, and he can counter everything that people use against him, and he can steal powers he doesn't have, and he can beat Naofumi and all the other heroes with, like, no sweat at all!"
I want All For One to come in and kick this little twerp's ass. Show him what a real OP villain who can steal powers is like.
This isn't a critique of the writing by the way. It feels like Takt is supposed to feel like that kind of character who plays to those tropes and is REALLY easy to hate.
I both do and don't like how Naofumi is acting in the prologue. Obviously I don't like specifically what he's doing because it's creepy and uncomfortable, but I really like the reasons for why. The dude is fried from everything that's happened and unlike Itsuki it's not because of a curse. He's grieving from a heavy loss, easily the biggest he's had since coming to this world, and unlike with Ost's death he has no one he can yet focus his anger on, so he's feeling completely lost and mixed up. Another great moment from Sadeena in helping him regain at least some of his sanity. Sex is a common way people try to find comfort after a terrible loss and if that had been the case I think she would have slept with him or even encouraged Raphtalia to be the one for that. But she could see pretty clearly that wasn't the case. Naofumi wasn't looking for comfort. He was practically a zombie, just going through the motions.
“It seems that from among the four holy heroes, the Shield and Bow have been most active over there. Based on their level of activity, there’s also a bias in the legends about the seven star heroes. They mainly talk about the Hammer, Claws, and Whip.” A bias. The Shield and Bow did complement each other well, that was true.
F**k that! Sword and Shield, BroTP!
“Putting that together with what we learned in Kizuna’s world, it sounds like the effects of the fusing of worlds,” I pondered. There was a wave that had combined the Shield world with the Bow world, and then the Shield and Bow world had been fused with the Sword and Spear world to create the current one. It was only natural that a bias in the legends would arise.
"Worlds lived, worlds died. And nothing will ever be the same."
I've talked before that I'm a big fan of the concept of a Multiverse in fiction, especially in superhero comics. Right away I liked that the four Holy Heroes came from different parallel universes and then getting Glass and L'Arc showed that there were also parallel fantasy universes also fighting the waves. And now we get this theory from the characters that Raphtalia's universe is an amalgam, made up of other previous universes that fused through the waves. It's very Crisis on Infinite Earths and JLA/Avengers.
Reading Queen Melromarc describe the king of Faubrey and I'm just remember a scene that I and many Overlord fans love to the depths of our hearts, of Sebas the butler encountering a naked little fat man who got his sexual thrills off beating the women the brothel provided him. Sebas, like any true gentleman, kicked him in the dick so hard he exploded. Is there some to hope that a similar fate befell the king whom apparently married and killed (and probably even worse than that) 9,999 women? Not even Witch deserves that. Nobody deserves that.
Even though it'd probably take him to a dark place he shouldn't go, part of me was hoping for some karma to occur when Witch revealed herself as Takt's ally to Naofumi. He no longer had the shield, meaning he could attack her like he never could before, meaning he could kill her with his bare hands. I'm glad he used the defense rating attack on Takt, because there's been great long-time set-up for that, but yeah, I wanted Naofumi to at least get to break Witch's nose after everything he's been through. And if Witch wasn't irredemable before, she most certainly is now, proving she has no loyalty to anyone other than herself. She used Naofumi and the other heroes from the beginning for her own goals. Her mother had enough control that she couldn't just do whatever she wanted. And Melty was standing in the way of her getting the throne. She's still a terrible person but there were at least reasons for her to be against these people. But Trash? Her father, who has been loyal and on her side since the beginning, who doted and spoiled her from a young age because of how much he loved her? She had no hesitation in ordering him killed along with everyone else. There was no reason behind it. It was just pure cruelly, greed, and self-satisfaction.
And then...there's the Queen. ...F**k. Y'all bastards were really good at keeping that spoiler hidden. I was accidentally spoiled that Alta was going to die but not through this site. I had no idea the Queen was going to die. Of course Naofumi couldn't have the Shield during that part. If he made Mirellia into a shield like he did Ost and Alta he probably would be unstoppable, because she was just that f**king awesome.
We're pouring one out for you, your majesty. May your youngest daughter inherit your great wisdom and unbelievably hilarious slapping ability.
I'm really glad with Trash's development in this book. Like I've said in past posts, I can feel basic empathy for him given his backstory, but feeling sorry for him was not enough to actually put me on his side, because he was not putting in any work to actually be better or redeem himself. He was just acting angry and crazy and then just sad and withered. Here? While he had to be shaken and roused into it (can't blame him for that as he just lost the love of his life), he puts in the effort to make use of himself and holds himself accountable for his past actions. I really like that he wants to continue being called Trash. That is his penance. Not more feeling sorry for himself or blaming the rest of the world. It's time for him to be the man he knows he's supposed to be.
With all that though, Melty was definitely the person I felt the worst for after the death. Of all the younger characters, despite being royalty and mature for her age, she is the person who feels the most like a real kid, and her crying her eyes out while clinging to Naofumi hurt just like it should, because this little girl just lost her mom. No idea what the expectation is in Melromarc for when Melty should take the throne but for her it's always going to feel too soon, because how could it not?
“Daddy . . . thank you for approving my marriage. You’ve finally agreed to let me marry Ollie,” she said dreamily.
“I’ll make you forget this ‘Ollie’ soon enough, although his keeping you a virgin for so long is something to be thankful for!” Takt cackled. It was clear that he was using some kind of illusion to make her think he was her beloved. “Those who don’t give proper thought to their daughters’ happiness have no right to live!”
Oh good! He's a rapist too!
So Naofumi was the Shield's first choice and the other three were the Bow, Sword, and Spear's third choices. I like the credit that's given that the first choice is not guaranteed to be the best, as they can become just as corrupt or egotistical, or the third choices are not guaranteed to be the worst, as they can grow into real heroes. I'm just wondering how the selection process worked and why they all couldn't get their first choices. The Holy Weapons apparently have some sway over the universes they pulled them from, given the promise of granting wishes if they want to return to them. My immediate theory is that the weapons all set up paths that'd lead their choices to being summoned but just through sheer coincidence and randomness all the first choices, save for Naofumi, kept missing the path. Going down the list, the weapons become more desperate and thus are more willing to use more extremes to get their choices, thus why Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki had to be killed in order to be summoned. They missed their window with their first and second choices so now they absolutely have to guarantee they get their third, even if the methods are less than ethical.
With the big final boss, the World Eater as Naofumi called it, I'm theorizing that he/she/it is using the waves to fuse multiple universes into one so that he/she/it can eat it all in one go.
I only have two issues with this volume and they're both kind of nitpicks. The first is with Trash's plan, specifically with the Glawick ore. I don't remember it ever being established before in the series. I really liked the Rucolu fruit being used in the Cal Mira wave battle because it was set up way beforehand, so it feels like a lot less of a Deus ex Machina. Same with Naofumi using defense rating attacks after his battle with Glass. That's good set-up. The ore doesn't break the story, it just feels very convenient that such a thing happened to exist. If I'm mistaken and it was set-up before and I just forgot, please let me know.
The second is Naofumi and Raphtalia being separated again after a trip into another universe. The story next volume seems like it'll be very different from last time but that part does feel like a repeat of what we've already seen. Plus, with the new status quo of Naofumi knowing how she feels about him, I want to see their interactions now that he's recovered a bit from the loss of Alta. Again, it's a nitpick, since I'm certain they'll find each other again, but I don't like feeling like I'm being deliberately kept away from what I want to see.
“The source of your power, the one true hero, now orders you. Reconsider the state of all things once more and bring down a storm of flame upon my target! Drifa Firestorm!” Takt completed the spell.
...
“The source of your power, just a hero, now orders you. Reconsider the state of all things once more and scatter the storm that would burn its target! Anti Drifa Firestorm!” I read the magic Takt had incanted and activated magic to nullify it. With that, the fire tornado scattered into nothing, as though it had never existed.
Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!
“I’m here to destroy everything you possess,” I menaced quietly. “Your pride, your dignity, everything you treasure. I’ve already half-destroyed your composure and your arrogance. Now it’s time for the other half. False hero, possessing six of the seven star weapons and the shield from the four holy weapons! Now face the reality of being defeated by a regular guy who holds none of the legendary weapons!”
No wonder Raphtalia couldn't be in this part. After hearing that line I don't think she'd be able to hold herself back and would have tackled him like a wild Albedo in heat right then and there.
I am so looking forward to when this volume's final battle is animated, especially the part where Naofumi gets his shield back. That is going to feel like such an epic, heroic moment.
So Rishia unlocked Pay-to-Win. ...I don't really know what to say to that. What do ancient magical relics care about money? ("What does God need with a starship?")
So the person Malty had Ren give a sword lesson to back in vol. 11, was that Takt, King Faubrey, or someone we don't know yet, like the mastermind behind everything?
Is Kizuna marked for death now? From how Fitora made it sound to Naofumi, when a Holy Hero dies a new one can't be summoned if the others are still around. If Kizuna's world works similarly, she might have to die or there'll be no Holy Heroes other than her.
Naofumi really likes his Dragon Ball Z, doesn't he? Which is appropriate given I just realized that the Energy Blast from the Spirit Tortoise Shield is almost literally the Kamehameha. Seriously, Kamehameha translates to "Turtle Destruction Wave".
So...what the heck do I do now? I've spent about a month reading through 16 volumes of Naofumi's rise and I know there are at least 6 other volumes that haven't been translated to english yet. I'll probably go find another LN series to read until vol. 17 comes out in July. Though I am curious if RoTSH has a fan translation site like Overlord and Konosuba do.

&&. announcing her royal highness, ( audrey fa ), the ( 36 ) year old ( princess consort/queen ) of ( monaco ). she is often confused with ( brenda song ). some say that she is ( materialistic & petty ), but she is actually ( insouciant & generous ).
fa yunru had the sort of rags to riches story capitalists love -- he studied english while growing up in china, but had always had a deep interest in technology and business. He finessed his way into a position with the china international electronic commerce center in the ministry of foreign trade and economic cooperation, building connections with american businessmen and engineers in the process.
he’s enamoured with the idea of the internet, sees it as a tool for extraordinary things and so moves to america during the internet boom. develops a web portal for connecting businesses to businesses that eventually becomes an e-commerce company designed for helping small to medium sized retail businesses. he starts calling himself jason fa and names his newly born daughter Audrey after his favorite American actress.
audrey doesn’t remember being poor. she knows that until the 8th grade, it was her mom who cooked her lunches and helped her with homework. but then her family becomes millionaires overnight and she’s being moved to private schools with other rich students, prepping harder than ever for university and a potential inheritance.
she slips into the finer clothes, more refined etiquette with ease, with a naturally keen eye for high quality jewelry and accessories. she has her father’s skill for making friends with people in high places, though it’s definitely easier when she’s wearing the latest trends like them. she loves having access to fancy restaurants and exclusive clubs, adores how people look at her as if she’s someone worth knowing.
her father was rejected from stanford’s graduate school ten(10!) times; audrey is accepted in the first round of applications. it helps that she has internships every summer in the subsidiaries oriented towards fashion and clothing retail, and volunteer experiences every holiday break in various sunlit beach locations.
she knows she has a job waiting for her with her father, so she pursues an mba immediately after her undergraduate degree, gets placed on numerous 30 under 30 lists, all because she’s a creative director in one of the biggest companies in the world (never mind that she shares her last name with the founder.)
by the time she meets violette grimaldi, audrey is vp, asia operations and always on the hunt for investors -- her dad’s hoping to take the company public soon and ever $$$ invested would increase their value. It seems like a natural fit with audrey’s tendency to follow and vi’s more calculated moves. the princess opens the door to a rich man’s haven, and audrey is greedy for those connections (and thankful, of course, for the opportunity 😇).
her reputation is one that is cultivated carefully; audrey knows she comes across foolish and vapid. she tends to talk more about fashion than finances, clothes over corporations. she’s not quick on her feet however, and her perceived ignorance tends to buy her the time she needs to make thoughtful decisions. honore seems to catch on to this faster than most.
he sees her. perhaps it’s because he’s dated many beautiful women, enough to know that it was rarely the only attractive quality about them. whatever the reason, he sees her and under his gaze audrey feels exposed and bold and vulnerable and powerful all at once. It’s a heady rush of a feeling that unnerves her as much as it excites her; the nda is welcome if only because it helps her stay rational about whatever their relationship might be.
and saying yes is the rational thing to do when he proposes. she’ll have to give up her position in her father’s company but the fa’s understand the importance of positional theory -- a princess consort, a halfway queen placed in one of the richest countries in the world isn’t something to toss away over less meaningful relationships. she’ll find a way to make peace with Vi, or so she hopes.
jason fa tells her she’s about to embark on a difficult task right before she walks down the aisle, three years ago. politics isn’t her strong suit, but negotiations are and audrey is reasonably confident in her ability to make people love her. besides, everyone seems to know her weaknesses already: the easiest way to gain the somewhat queen’s favor is to help her family.
there’s a tension between vi and audrey though it’s rarely palpable -- their good humor has cooled considerably since audrey’s marriage though they remain professionally aligned. audrey has arrived at the program to bolster her relationship with honore’s daughters, not only because she genuinely wants them to be friendly, but also because honore clearly cares for them and audrey cares about maintaining her status with him.
she might not be his favorite wife, but she’s determined to be the last one
audrey is decidedly not serious -- she’s a nouveau riche, daddy’s girl who wants influence and attention more than anything else and a fervent believer in the idea that it is better to be loved than feared. she’s not hungry for power but influence -- she doesn’t care about politics, but she cares about policies that may affect her family business. in some ways she’s sort of prepped to be a pawn for someone cleverer but we’ll see
some other character inspo for her include: marcia roy (succession), margaery tyrell (game of thrones), cher (clueless), elle woods (legally blonde), krystle/cristal (dynasty), london tipton (suite life of zack & cody)
anyway hit that like button and i’ll come bug u for plots/connections

OK. I've got to ask--Henry VI? I think you're the first person I've met who claims those as their favorite Shakespeare. I'll admit that I've read and seen a fair bit of Shakespeare, but I'm not familiar with them at all. What's the appeal? Why do you love them? Sell them to me. ;)
Oh boy, here we go :))))) (Thank you for giving me permission to scream - I also think I’m the only person I’ve ever met who has those as their favorite Shakespeare plays). Also, as we’ve talked opera - I think these plays could make a great Wagnerian style opera cycle.
First off, little disclaimer: I’m not a medievalist, so I can’t say that I’ve definitely got the best interpretation of the Wars of the Roses and the history that the H6 cycle covers. I know I do not - so you may read these plays and have totally different interpretations, and that’s great! This will kind of be how I came to love the plays and why they were (and still are) exciting for me to read.
I will admit, these plays are a bit of a minefield (as my Shakespeare professor said during a lecture on the histories and I don’t think I’ll ever forget that descriptor). Some of these scenes are not as well written, and many of them are almost irrelevant to telling a tight-knit story, so things get cut. Sometimes 1H6 is just cut entirely from productions, and I might venture to say that it is probably the least performed Shakespeare play. We get lines like “O, were mine eyeballs into bullets turn’d, / That I in a rage might shoot them at your faces” (1H6.4.4.79-80), which I might say is nearly on par with “a little touch of Harry in the night” from Henry V. But despite the unevenness, there is so much from these plays that are meaningful, heartbreaking, and that continue to fascinate me. There’s so much about power and leadership that we can learn from these plays - and perhaps that’s why I took an interest in 1990s British politics because there are actually some very interesting similarities happening - but also a lot we can learn about empathy, hope, and love.
These plays have a lot of fascinating key players - it would honestly be a privilege to play any of them - and most (if not all) of these key players have some claim to power, just in the family lines they were born into. And this conflict is one that’s been building up since Richard II. With the Wars of the Roses we have a man who is unwilling, and sometimes unable to lead because of various circumstances, some of which having to do with his mental health, which was generally poor, and some of which have to do with the various times he was dethroned, captured, etc. - and I say unable for lack of a better word. Essentially, politics in these plays are caving in, and at a very rapid pace. There’s a hole at the center of government and people are ambitious to fill it. We also have a lot of people who could potentially fill that role, people who on principle, have a lot of political enemies. The nobles in these plays are having to assure that they themselves are in power or that their ally is in power, otherwise it is their livelihood at stake.
We have Henry VI, who was made king at nine months old after the untimely death of his father, the famous Henry V, and basically has people swarming him since birth claiming that they’re working in his best interest. He’s a bit of a self-preservationist to start, but by the end we see a man completely transformed by the horrors of war and ruthless politics. I also think he might be the only Shakespeare character who gets his entire life played out on stage. We see him at every stage of his life, which makes his descent all the more bitter. (One cannot help but see the broken man he is at forty-nine and be forced to remember the spritely, kind boy he was at ten). He’s a man who clings closely to God in an environment where God seems to be absent. He desires peace, if nothing else, and he wants to achieve this by talking things through. He’s an excellent orator (one only needs to look at the “Ay Margaret; my heart is drown’d with grief” monologue from 2H6, but there are countless other examples), but there’s a point where even he realizes that his talking will achieve nothing, and his alternative is heartbreaking.
We have his wife, Queen Margaret, otherwise known as Margaret of Anjou, or the “she-wolf of France”. I advertise her as “if you like Lady Macbeth, you’ll love Margaret of Anjou”. Sometimes Shakespeare can portray her as wanting power for herself, but I genuinely think she wanted a good life for her husband and her child, otherwise the alternative is begging at her uncle’s feet for protection in France (her uncle was Charles VII of France) while separated from her husband, having her or a member of her immediate family be killed, or worse. I think it’s important to remember with Margaret that historically she came from a family where women took power if their husbands were unable to. Her assumption of power in these plays is something that’s natural to her, even if it’s not reflected very well in Shakespeare’s language. You also see some fantastically thrilling monologues from Margaret as well, especially her molehill speech (one of two molehill speeches in 3H6, totally different in nature - the other one is from a heartbroken and forlorn Henry after the Battle of Towton) - Margaret’s monologue has got the energy of a hungry cat holding a mouse by the tail.
Also Henry and Margaret have a fascinating relationship. Because they’re so different in how they resolve conflicts, they grow somewhat disenchanted with each other at times, and can actually be mean to one another, despite their love. My favorite scene might be at the start of 3H6, where Margaret has come in with their seven year old son, Edward, and starts berating Henry for giving the line of succession to the Yorkists. What strikes me there is that we have a little boy having to choose between staying with his mom, or going with his dad - it’s something very domestic, and I think the emotional accessibility of that scene is what makes it memorable. It’s not about politics for me at that moment, it’s about a boy having to choose between his very estranged parents. Here’s a little taste from 1.1. in 3H6 - lines 255-261:
QUEEN MARGARET: Come son, let’s away. / Our army is ready; come, we’ll after them.
KING HENRY: Stay, gentle Margaret, and hear me speak.
QUEEN MARGARET: Thou hast spoke too much already. Get thee gone.
KING HENRY: Gentle son Edward, thou wilt stay with me?
QUEEN MARGARET: Ay, to be murdered by his enemies.
We also have Richard, Duke of York, who is Henry’s cousin and leader of the Yorkist faction. If you’re at all familiar with 1990s British politics, as I have grown close to over the past month, York reminds me very much of Michael Heseltine (filthy rich and constantly vying for power) - and I would love to stage some kind of modern H6 cycle production just so I could make that connection. York’s father is one of the three traitors executed by Henry V at the start of H5, leaving him an orphan at four years old (historically). He is also Aumerle’s (from R2) nephew, and so when Aumerle dies at the Battle of Agincourt, little four year old Richard inherits both his father’s money and titles, and his uncle’s money and titles, making him the second richest nobleman in England behind the King. All this information is historical and doesn’t really show up in the play, but I think that kind of background would give a man some entitlement. He’s also next in line for the throne if something were to happen to Henry (until Henry has a son), so he feels it is his duty as heir to the throne to protect Henry (or in better words, he feels that he should be running the show) - Margaret feels that it is her duty to protect Henry as she is his wife and mother of Edward of Westminster, the Lancastrian heir, and so you can see where these two are going to disagree.
More fascinating are York’s sons, Edward, George, and Richard. Edward is this (for lack of better words) “hip” eighteen year old who comes and shreds things up at the Battle of Towton - becoming Edward IV in the process and chasing Henry off the throne. He is incredibly problematic, but I might venture to say that he’s the least problematic of the trio of York brothers. George of Clarence is (also for lack of better words) “a hot mess” and feels entitled to power, even though he may not readily give his motivations for it. I think he just wants it, and so he actually ends up switching sides mid-3H6 because he would actually be in a better position in government with those new allies. And finally, we have Richard of Gloucester (future Richard III), and in 3H6, you just get to see him sparkle. It puzzles me a bit how people can just jump into Richard III without getting any of the lead up that Shakespeare gave in the H6 cycle, and I think 3H6 is the perfect play to see that. I think it clears up a lot of his motivation, which Shakespeare didn’t get perfectly either, because there are some ableist things going on with these plays. He’s just as bloodthirsty, just as cynical, but in this play, he wins out the day.
These are just a few of the main characters. We’ve also got Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (known to history as “The Kingmaker”), who is this incredibly powerful nobleman who is wicked skilled in battle and seems to have a lot of luck in that area (until he doesn’t). We’ve got Clifford, who is just as bloodthirsty as Richard III (if not more so). We’ve also got Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester - Henry’s uncle and quite unpopular with his fellow noblemen, and Eleanor Cobham, his wife who gets caught in the act of witchcraft. (Talk to my lovely friend @nuingiliath if you want to hear about Humphrey or Eleanor). Joan of Arc also makes an appearance in 1H6, and often she’s the only reason that 1H6 gets performed.
There are so many ways to latch onto this cycle, and it can be for the huge arcs that these characters go on, or it can be for the very small reasons, like in the first scene of 3H6, like I mentioned earlier. It’s very much akin to Titus Andronicus in the language (I did a bit of research a while ago about the use of animal-focused language in Shakespeare’s plays, and the H6 cycle and Titus Andronicus lead the charts just in terms of frequency of people being referred to metaphorically as animals- they’re also chronological neighbors, all written very early in Shakespeare’s career). Also, these plays held a huge amount of weight at the time they were written - the effects of the Wars of the Roses were still pressing over the political climate of the 1590s.
I think these plays are great to read just in being able to contextualize the histories as a whole - you get to know how things fared after Henry V (spoiler: not well), and you also get the lead up to Richard III. The ghosts in Richard’s dream make sense after reading the H6 cycle - because those ghosts lived in the H6 cycle, and (spoiler: Richard wronged them in the H6 cycle). They were also the first of Shakespeare’s history plays, so you read subsequent histories plays that make subtle references to the H6 cycle, and I think you can take so much more out of the rest of the histories plays once you’ve read these.
I hope this was a little informative, and perhaps persuaded you to check them out!
Productions I recommend (you can click on the bold titles and it’ll take you to where you can access these productions):
Shakespeare’s Globe at Barnet (2013) // Graham Butler (Henry VI), Mary Doherty (Margaret of Anjou), Brendan O’Hea (Richard, Duke of York), Simon Harrison (Richard of Gloucester) - filmed at Barnet, location of the Battle of Barnet, where Warwick was killed in 1471.
ESC Production (1990) // Paul Brennen (Henry VI), June Watson (Margaret of Anjou), Barry Stanton (Richard, Duke of York), Andrew Jarvis (Richard of Gloucester) - a more modern production, one cast put together all seven major Plantagenet history plays (1H6 and 2H6 are combined into one play - a normal practice). Sometimes this footage can be a bit fuzzy, but I loved this production.
The Hollow Crown Season 2 // Tom Sturridge (Henry VI), Sophie Okonedo (Margaret of Anjou), Adrian Dunbar (Richard, Duke of York), Benedict Cumberbatch (Richard of Gloucester) - done in a film-like style, also with some pretty big name actors as you can see. Season 1 stars Ben Whishaw as Richard II, Jeremy Irons as Henry IV, Simon Russell Beale as Falstaff, and Tom Hiddleston as Hal/Henry V. (also available on iTunes)
RSC Wars of the Roses (1965) // David Warner (Henry VI), Peggy Ashcroft (Margaret of Anjou), Donald Sinden (Richard, Duke of York), Ian Holm (Richard of Gloucester) - black and white film, done in parts on YouTube.
BBC Henry VI Plays (1983) // Peter Benson (Henry VI), Julia Foster (Margaret of Anjou), Bernard Hill (Richard, Duke of York), Ron Cook (Richard of Gloucester) - features my favorite filmed performance of Edward IV (played by Brian Protheroe), and my favorite filmed performance of Warwick (played by Mark Wing-Davey).
Also if you ever get to see Rosa Joshi’s production of an all female H6 cycle... *like every time I see photos my immediate reaction is *heart eyes* I haven’t seen it yet, but my amazing friend and fellow Shakespearean @princess-of-france has - I’m sure she’d love to talk more about it sometime! I’ll leave a picture I found on the internet...
Also tagging @suits-of-woe because we could cry about these plays all day.

What Her Mother Gave Her
Fandom: Roswell, New Mexico
Characters: Rosa, Liz, Maria, and Isobel
Theme: Day 3 of Ladies of RNM week 2020. I’m a child/I’m a Mother Family/Legacy
A/N: Just a small contribution. All errors my own. Enjoy or not. It’s OK. :)
----
Her earliest memory is one she doesn't share. She has spent years trying to drown it out.
It's the look on her mother's face the first time she sketched something that was pretty damn masterful for a three-year-old. She remembers the way her mother looked past her, swatted her aside with disinterest and resentment.
Helena's face telling more than her words ever did, and she's been chasing away that memory every since.
She got her mother's face. Resting somewhere between alluring and bitchy. A face that was an indictment-- guilty even at her most innocent; she always looked like she was up to no good.
Not even her smiles helped, always coming off conniving and insincere except to those who knew her best which wasn't a lot.
She also got her mother's demons -- the shadows that haunted her, the whispers that invaded her headspace that she couldn't shake.
She got her mother's sadness, but see, she also got her mother's rage.
She doesn't know what and who she would be without it. Without that full capacity to be angry, without the ways it fuels her because without that anger there is no art, without her art, there is no her.
Her capacity for anger can be destructive, but it also waylaid to a capacity for love, fiercely, strongly, and passionately.
Her mother gave her things that made her too much. Too sad. Too angry. Too happy.
But on her best days, she recognizes the gift within the curse.
She sees her mother's face in a shard of glass in some back alley. The paint fumes are more comforting than her mother's kisses ever were.
She sees her mother's face, her mother's anger. Her mother's passion, as she takes a break from turning something ugly into something beautiful.
She sees all the things her mother gave her.
--
She runs. She runs so far away from her mother that she became her.
She ran so far away that she ran into her.
Her mother gave her a knack for having one foot out the door, and she's been combatting that ever since.
She wears her mother's armor, painted red stain on full lips. She has her mother's lips.
They press kisses with passion and love, doles them out selectively, leaves others craving more.
Her lips tease, like her mothers do, a playful smirk, a sexy smile, or pursed so tightly there's no room for interpretation when she's angry, or annoyed, or determined.
She has her mother's determination. She didn't see it at first because her mother is fickle. She's flighty, and she used to think that she lacked focus.
She knows now that Helena was focused and determined, just not about motherhood.
She has her mother's tongue. Equal parts sweet and biting with her words. Her tongue is like a sword, tiny slices, and nicks until she kills someone. Vicious death by a thousand cuts.
She has her mother's focus. Maybe she doesn't see it until it's far too late.
She wears goggles like her mother wears heels. A lab coat like her mother wears a formfitting dress, but their missions consume them.
She was born with her mother's chaotic spirit.
She loses herself in science, cloaks herself in warped logic, determined to make the world a better place.
She's willing to slip-slide into chaotic destruction to do it. She doesn't see it.
She's short-sighted and laser-focused. Her mama gave her that.
--
Her mother is always teaching her.
She thought the lessons stopped a long time ago, but there was so much more her mother had to share with her.
Her mother isn't done teaching her.
She inherited her mother's dusky skin and thick curls and the myriad of things that come with it.
She learned to stand in that proudly and unapologetically. All the better in a household that championed individualism, pride, and confidence.
Her mother taught her those, too.
She feels Mimi's energy surround her in coral and pink waves whenever she hits a stage. She sees Mimi's face in the recesses of her mind as she wipes down the counter at the Wild Pony.
She has her mother's flair for whimsy, but with her own hardened edge.
Her mother raised her to be confident, but she taught herself to be brave. They share strength, in many ways strength is a birth rite, it's in their blood, the marrow of their bones.
And so are their gifts. She has her mother's abilities, who got them from her mother and grandmother before.
She's still untangling the convoluted mess that is her past -- her history, and she's trying to piece everything together.
She used to be so scared.
Of her abilities in part, but mostly of her own mind.
She thought inheriting her mother's brain was a death sentence, but it may be her biggest superpower.
Her mother never played it safe; it cost them both greatly.
But she doesn't play it safe either. She's fearless now. The line between fearless and reckless is razor-thin, and between both and insanely stupid, it's up for debate.
She knows what she's risking to unlock a mind with abilities that contain multitudes.
She's never felt so alive, so powerful, so in tune with who she is and connected with her family, her roots, her history.
It's a gift, really. One most take for granted.
Maybe she is fearless like her mom, willing to throw herself full-bodied into the unknown.
She has a thirst for knowledge. She needs to know her limits and what she's capable of doing and being.
She needs to know who she is. But for the first time in years, she has never felt so connected to Mimi, and the allure of that is something she can't relinquish.
If there's a way to meet her mother in some dimension or altered state where they're as one, she'll take it.
She knows no one else can understand this, except maybe her mother.
Because she gave her a power than can barely be restrained and a spirit that pushes boundaries.
And damn it, she's her mother's child.
--
She was always driven to be perfect. Her mother just happened to demand it too.
It's nurture as much as nature, or so she's come to learn. She picked up on her mother's hyper-focus on image, and well, it fell in line with what they needed to do anyway.
Her mother taught her to never have a hair out of place. How to put her best foot forward, particularly clad in some name-brand shoe that others covet.
Her mother taught her how to incite jealousy.
People talk, she knows, she's people, so if they're going to be speaking about you at all, it's best to give them no reason to disparage.
She got her mother's knack for event planning. Hours spent orchestrating elaborate ordeals ranging from high-class to hoe-down and everything in between.
She got her mother's habit of picking sensible appearing men, for the aesthetic, but in truth, she doesn't know what she likes.
She thinks maybe she got that from her mother too. She loses herself in what she thinks she's supposed to be, some carefully crafted caricature that appeals to the masses, or doesn't, but she's still so unsure if this is her.
Ann has that air of being unknowable too. Like she's pretty and stylish, and she's whatever she needs to be in a moment, but whoever she is -- she's buried so deep that she can't access it anymore.
She shares her coldness, an ice queen vibe that only thaws on special occasions and in certain company.
Except, she's a mess. She is always just barely keeping herself together, and when someone looks carefully they see the cracks in her exterior.
She has so many cracks. She's so damn imperfect. And while diamonds are by nature flawed, she focuses on the sparkle.
She's a force of nature. Multiple at once, like fire and wind, and just as devastating.
Ann is a force, and she wanted to be one too.
She sees her mother in the little things, the time she spends applying glossy lips and tucking a strand behind her ear.
She hears her mother in the calculated demands as she micromanages everything and everyone.
She feels her mother when she's gripping tightly to whatever handle on the control that she has.
She needs to be in control and craves it really, and she's just now discovering what it feels like to let go.
Who gave her such shame? Well, her mother gave her that too.
Saddled her with insecurity she couldn't begin to process. She doesn't know what to do with it all -- the constant buzzing that maybe she's not enough that maybe she's not the perfect daughter her mother signed up for.
She's broken, and her mother is a fixer. She didn't manage to get that from her. It's something her brothers have in spades, though.
Her mother taught her about femininity and what it's supposed to look like.
She taught her about how everything is supposed to look.
But her mom, her mom gave her abilities she's only just scratching the surface of and learning how to contain.
Her mom gave her life and sacrificed her own for hers.
Her mom gave her a lifeline, a tether to the past, to their home, to who and what she is, and she didn't realize how lost she was in this world without it.
Her mom gave her family, more importantly, a pleiad of women she didn't know she needed.
Her brothers were always more than enough, but she was always on her own in that way.
Her mom gave her a guideline because she didn't know who the hell she was and maybe she never knew, but now, now she knows she can be her mom's daughter.
Her mom gave her a legacy to carry on, and she can honor that and herself.
Her mom gave her purpose.

a list of my favorite funny shadowhunter chronicles quotes:
it’s the mortal cup jace, not the mortal toilet bowl.
“how was the seelie queen?” “same as usual.” “raging bitch, then?” “pretty much”
no, i’m a very naughty boy. i do all sorts of bad things. i kick kittens. i make rude gestures at nuns.
“what’s this?” “it’s a girl, alec. your sister isabelle is one.”
the clave has the collective intelligence of a pineapple.
i thought i’d lie on the floor and writhe in pain for awhile. it relaxes me.
that’s simon lewis, and he is my boyfriend. so if any of you think about trying to hurt him because he's a mundie or--may the angel have mercy on your soul--pursuing him romantically, i will come after you, i will hunt you down and i will crush you to powder.
i was going to watch project runway. it’s on next
never trust a duck.
nobody calls me ‘blondie’ and keeps their kneecaps.
meanwhile, i wanted to tell you that lately i’ve been cross-dressing. also, i’m sleeping with your mom. i thought you should know.
speaking of hope, did you see that shot alec got off with his bow? that’s my boyfriend.
i think she asked if she could touch my mango.
i was alive when the dead sea was just a lake that was feeling rather poorly.
usually i’m remarkably good natured. try me on a day that doesn’t end in y.
a warlock who looks like a gay sonic the hedge hog and dresses like the child catcher from chitty chitty bang bang.
hot faerie threesome. i can say i knew you when.
i’m pure at heart. it repels the dirt.
“and i don't know how to be smooth, sexy vampire simon for you, either!" “you were never that smooth, simon.”
not necessarily. i turn myself down occasionally just to keep it interesting.
it isn’t against the law to be an idiot.
first candy and flowers, then the apology letters, then the ravenous demon hoards- all in one day.
demon pox, oh demon pox. just how is it acquired? one must go down to the bad part of town until one is very tired. demon pox, oh demon pox, i had it all along—not the pox, you foolish blocks, i mean this very song— for i was right, and you were wrong!
"a...lord montgomery? you dated a member of the nobility? how am I ever going to compete with that?" "you’re lord montgomery, simon!”
“‘will. do you care more about the plan being enacted or about getting credit for it?” “that. the second one.”
i am a man and men do not consume pink beverages.
oh, i’m sorry. is there a different highway you’d like to die on? because we can arrange that.
the meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited like me.
but he hurt jules, so when we track him down, i am going to chop him up and feed him to my fish. well, i’m going to buy some. i’m going to buy goldfish and feed them blood until they acquire a taste for human flesh.
when i first arrived in london, i so quickly tired of being surrounded by so many people that it was only with great difficulty that i refrained from seizing the next unfortunate who crossed my path and committing violent acts upon their person.
i see you have decided to follow in the long herondale tradition of poor decision-making.
“so you just came here to torture me and talk about yourself?” “oh, simon, simon, simon. you may not remember, but that's kind of our thing.”
i’ve heard the word ‘fear’, i simply choose to believe it doesn’t apply to me.
“i’m trying to figure out how someone could live in a brothel for a month and not notice. you must be terribly dull-witted. if it helps at all, it seemed to be quite a high-class establishment. nicely furnished, fairly clean...” “sounds as if you've visited your fair share of brothels. making a study of them?” “more of a hobby.’”
“jesus!” “actually, it’s just me, although i’ve been told the resemblance is startling.”
nice, bah. he’s gorgeous. you should leave him here. i could hang hats on him and things.
that’s why when major bad asses greet each other in movies, they don’t say anything, they just nod. the nod means ‘I am a badass and I recognize that you, too, are a badass’, but they don’t say anything because they’re wolverine and magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain.
i’m a werewolf not a golden retriever.
i’ll crash the wedding. i’ll jump out of the cake, but not in a sexy way. like, with grenades
did you ever think that in a past life alec was an old woman with ninety cats who was always yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off her lawn? because i do.
“have you got a spider anywhere?” “why would i have a spider? do i look like someone who would collect them?” “no offense, but you kind of do.”
unfortunately, we are all out of bitter revenge at the moment. so it’s either tea or nothing.
“i’m not gay. i’m not straight. i’m not interested.” “your sexuality is ‘not interested’?” “that’s right.”
just kissing? how quickly you dismiss our love.
you had to make a crazy jail friend didn’t you? you couldn’t just count ceiling tiles or tame a pet mouse like normal prisoners do?
just coffee. black like my soul.
magnus did not have enormous respect for the law, but if he was breaking it he wanted to look good doing it.
i don’t want to grow up, i want to be an angst ridden teenager who can’t confront his own inner demons and takes it out verbally on other people instead.
“magnus, you were trying to flirt with your own plate.” “i’m a very open-minded sort of fellow!” “ragnor is not. when he found out that you were feeding us guinea pigs, he hit you over the head with your plate. it broke.” “so ended our love. ah, well. It would never have worked between me and the plate anyway.”
“when will says 'enterprising', he means 'morally deficient.” “no, I mean enterprising. when i mean morally deficient, i say, ‘now that's something i would have done.’”
never believe the bad guy is dead until you see a body. that just leads to unhappiness and surprise ambushes.
“i promise to charm the dickens out of him. i shall charm him with such force that when i am done, he will be left lying limply on the ground, trying to remember his own name.” “the man's eighty-nine. he may well have the problem anyway.”
i thought: classic jace. never makes a mess when a catastrophe will do.
“that’s not the spirit of the law, emma. remember? ‘the law is hard, but it is the law’” “i thought it was ‘the law is annoying, but it is also flexible.’”
“a little girl robbed you?” “actually she wasn’t a little girl at all, as it turns out, but a midget in a dress with a penchant for violence, who goes by the name of six-fingered nigel.”
“goodness. if you keep seeing six-fingered nigel like this, he'll expect you to declare your intentions."
you told us to leave you in the desert, because you planned to start a new life as a cactus.
your pretense does not fool me, gnome. my eye will be upon you.
of course, for a badass warrior, jace is kind of prissy.
good proverb. however, like most proverbs, it sounds wise and yet does not actually clarify anything.
let me just follow up by describing what a big mistake you would be making if you broke up with alec. the lightwoods are seriously hot people. some people say the herondales used to be hot, but think about it-not only do we outnumber them, but we took their last hottie and we made him ours. obviously, we won the victory.
