Social platforms are unnaturally rich with sources of moral outrage; there is always a tweet or news development to get angry about, along with plenty of users to highlight it to a potential audience of millions. It's like standing in the center of the largest crowd ever assembled, knowing that, at any moment, it might transform into a mob. This creates powerful incentives for what the philosophers Justin Tosi and Brandon Warmke have termed "moral grandstanding" - showing off that you are more outraged, and therefore more moral, than everyone else. "In a quest to impress peers," Tosi and Warmke write, "grandstanders trump up moral charges, pile on in cases of public shaming, announce that anyone who disagrees with them is obviously wrong, or exaggerate emotional displays." Off-line, moral grandstanders might heighten a particular groups sensitivities a few degrees by pressuring peers to match them. Or they might simply annoy everyone. But on social networks, grandstanders are systematically rewarded and amplified. This can trigger "a moral arms race," Tosi and Warmke cautioned, in which people "adopt extreme and implausible views, and refuse to listen to the other side.

oh my god hi it's me again😭 can i req for max fischer x gn!reader and it's just them on a study date? so like reader's dad thinks that max is distracting reader from their grades even though it's the exact opposite
have a great day! feel free to ignore🎀
a/n: i honestly LOVE this request, study date with max is so cute >.<!! also this is a little longer then i expected so sorry about that guys :P
you’ve seen the many times max failed each test back to back in every class. as you both sat in the library after gathering books, you soon decided to offer him to a little study date to be able to help him at least score above a D. he felt himself getting a bit hesitant about the offer as his main focus was the clubs he managed and of course he told you this straight up because he felt as if he needed to explain why he can’t just throw them away right then and there.
“max…you won’t be able to manage them if you keep failing these tests, you’ll get expelled sooner or later, and who else will manage them when you’re gone so soon?”, you felt a bit guilty as you say this, you didn’t want to guilt trip him into it, but yet you found for it to work as you saw max take your words into consideration.
“fine…i’ll do it.” he muttered in agreement after a couple moments of consideration, he soon gave you a small smile after being pulled into one of your tight hugs as you smiled from cheek to cheek which he absolutely adored. “let’s go to your house after school today, okay?”
as the school day ended and the two of you walked into your home, max couldn’t stop himself but take a good look around like he did much many times before, maybe he just liked how warm your home environment was but soon his train of thought was brought to a close when he saw your dad.
“hi dad!” you happily said as you shared a hug with your dad and not noticing the look he was giving max. “dad, remember my boyfriend max?” you asked as you pulled away and held onto your boyfriends arm with a smile.
“the fischer boy…isn’t he the one the one with the failing grades?” your dad asked with a disrespectful tone in his voice, you saw max being taken aback from the comment, soon about to say something in response before he interrupted by your talking, “yes but he’s here so i could help his grades”
“whatever you said Y/N, but i’m sure he’s distracting you from getting good grades yourself,” your dad expressed with worry as you watched you take max into your room, “there’s nothing to worry about dad, you know i don’t get distracted that easily” you chirped as you shared a smile with your dad before shutting the door behind you.
you faced toward max and saw the sadden look on his face, soon sitting next to him and placing your head onto his shoulder, then feeling his head onto yours soon after, “my dad doesn’t really hate you max, he’s just worried you know..” breaking the silence between the two of you as you glanced up at him as your eyes meet his.
“it felt like it…do you think i’m not worth enough for rushmore?” max asked bluntly which surprised you. you sat up properly and gave him a serious look which made him a bit more worried.
“of course you’re worth enough, you did write a hit play when you were a kid which got you into there,” you say with a smile which gave max a bit of relief when hearing your reassurance. “but we need to work on your grades through, which is why i need you to work with me!” you said as you stood up to grab textbooks to ease him into understanding the material needed to pass those tests in the future.
with many complaints and study dates that came and went, you saw the slow improvement with max’s grades that reached to at least high D’s, C’s, and low B’s, which you of course were proud of alongside max’s dad, soon following with your dad being much more pleasant with max being around once he was proven wrong.
yet max was so grateful for you and he’d never shut up about it for as long as he’s with you.

This pattern holds across many of the conventional wars since World War II: a conflict over territory and power balance that began with the declaration of those modern states and that has flared intermittently ever since.
Armenia and Azerbaijan, for instance, two countries that also emerged out of the Soviet Union’s breakup, have fought periodic wars ever since, broken by long but tense cease-fires. India and Pakistan fought their first war within months of their independence and partition in 1947, followed by three more wars, most recently in 1999, and repeated lower-level conflicts now held at a tentative nuclear peace. North and South Korea reached an armistice in 1953 but remain in a technical state of war with occasional flare-ups and an ever-present threat of all-out fighting.
Such conflicts, in other words, have often persisted for as many as six or seven decades. With peace talks minimal or nonexistent in many cases, some may well continue longer than that.
And while outright fighting may be infrequent, with what Dr. Radchenko termed “active phases” lasting only a few months, periods of calm typically require deep international involvement to maintain. American troops, for instance, have been garrisoned in South Korea for more than 70 years.
It is impossible to predict whether this represents the future for Russia and Ukraine, though it perhaps already describes their present state. The seven years before Russia’s 2022 invasion were marked by lower-level fighting, with heavy Western diplomacy and support to Ukraine aimed at forestalling wider conflict.
This pattern shows that one side rarely vanquishes the other outright, especially with foreign states ready to step in. And it offers another lesson: Political change within those countries rarely provides the sort of breakthrough that observers are hoping might one day lead Moscow to pull back. The decade-long Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, for instance, only deepened with the elevation, in 1985, of the reform-minded leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Such anger creates a drive, sometimes overwhelming, for finding someone to punish. In a disturbing experiment, subjects were asked to assign a punishment for someone else's moral transgression. They became harsher when led to believe that they were being watched, harsher still when told that their audience was highly political or ideological. Many heightened the punishment even if they thought their victim did not deserve it. Their motivation was simple: they expected that cruelty would make the observers like them more.
