allegedly the ladies FS sold out. There's only so much you can pin on the location and the weather. Like setting aside the price too! If I had the opportunity to watch CanNats in person in perfect weather for FREE I wouldn't bother. US Nats is actually worth watching on stream and in person. Imagine a national championships of a major federation that does not infect any and all onlookers with crippling depression!!
You are so correct, the state of Canadian skating, is, for the most part, completely abysmal, especially the singles. It's tragic. Our ice dance is mired in scandal, we have a hag team that should have retired years ago, and our excellent third place team is sadly injured. Pairs is Deanna and Max, a giant gulf, and then some very messy/unseasoned teams. I can't even talk about singles.
The top 6 women at US Nats outscored all the skaters at Canadian Nationals -- none of whom met the minimum TES. Just...what the hell? Le sigh.
I'm not joking when I say I want Meagan Duhamel to perform a coup and put herself in charge of Skate Canada, she would have us ready by the Olympics and fucking thriving in 3-4 years.

Okay, my chirpetry of the skating and the costuming thereof will be all over the place today because I'm watching shit out of order, or I should say, I'm prioritizing events based on my level of giving a fuck. We're starting with the pairs, it seems like.
French kids #1: His outfit I'm not even gonna bother with, but her dress has been filling me with rage ever since I first saw it, especially since this isn't the Corpse Bride program. I'm calling it Dresse Macabre. Whose idea was it to a) make her look naked and b) embellish the dress with... ribs? Especially since - didn't this boy's previous partner retire because of an ED? I'm questioning the decision making all around, particularly hiring Gui as choreographer, since he's done some real stinker pair programs that never came together technically for the team. He should stick to ice dance.
French kids #2: Bruno is such a dish and I so want him to succeed, but this team has a bit less potential than the previous one, and he'll need to do some serious work to get them where they need to be. That twist looked like it could be a quad some day. His styling was so Morganesque that it gave me a bit of an ick, and her dress was so cute... from the bust down. Mismatched mesh is usually a supply chain issue, but the sleeves are a choice and such an unnecessary one at that. Mark here with a masterclass in classy commentary - yes, they do need to spend time with a ballet instructor, you're so right, Mark.
Anna and Poje Manuel: The costumes were a bit predictable but at least they fit the music. By Italian pair team standards, they're best-dressed, honestly. There's a Duhamelness to her, and I don't mean it in a bad way - she's really working out there on the ice. So nice to see someone point their toes in a lift, it's a lost art! The way the bottom of his vest was flapping around and cutting him in half was a bit distracting, but what I love is how we're seeing the Italian pair field build up because they've reached critical coaching mass. I loved their step sequence in particular. Ondrej is doing some great work, they have potential.
Danny and child: An East of Eden program in 2023 - that's what we're being subjected to. Fine, whatever. I thought it was going to be Riverdance, judging by the costumes. Do you understand my disdain for boatnecks on men in this sport now? Look at that thing puffy thing flopping around. From afar, it all looks so Christmas-y. Her hair and accessories are cute and the dress is fine, but uninspired and underwhelming, and again with those skating dress pentagrams. I don't understand why this pairing happened, particularly because there have been partnerless pair boys her own age in the U.S. recently that she'd at least have a future with. They have some nice movement quality but they've been overhyped and overscored.
Tria: They did so well! But there are more important things than being clean, and I fear they haven't gotten that memo yet. My concern is that this is their ceiling ☹️. The lack of transitions and his inability to perform some of the turns is going to hold them back, especially going up against gritty teams like Deanna and Max. Their programs are fine but too similar to what they did last year, and they needed something extraordinary this year to make them stand out and move up. They needed to go to a superstar choreographer like a Lori or a David to get whatever political boost they could get, they might not get another opportunity of an open field like this again. Alison seems lovely, but she's a base value coach and all her teams have the same issues and the same limitations. They need a harder throw if they're going to be a factor. The costumes I kinda hate and I know I'm being harsh, but the dress is too similar to one Ev wore ~4 years ago and I'm assuming it's the same designer because the girls always have a wedgie problem and the guy's costume is always perfunctory. It's frustrating because I feel like they're capable of so much more and they don't know it, and everyone's waiting for them to break into the top tier, but they don't know how. I know this was a W for them but I think they have more potential than they're even aware of. I hate to criticize because they clearly slayed, but it was more of a function of the state of the field than anything else. I just want them to soar. Anyway, Vanessa in shambles, good for them, please don't Mike it up tomorrow!
Mi gente Latino: Please get ur shit together on the jumps and throws because you are beautiful! I love me some Paganini. The color of the costumes is delightful and I'm kinda digging her classic pairs dress for its simplicity. So here's the thing about dressing pair guys - you don't need to use tricks that make the guys look broader - they already are. He needs a longer, fitted, untucked shirt, he doesn't need the sash in the front, or the cummerbund, or the awkward depth of the V, or the flappy random-length sleeves. Idk, they need to send them to Oakville or somewhere to figure out their elements because I'm aboard this struggle bus with them and I want it to be a party bus instead. Please medal here because I just can't.
Kovalevs: Why are the Kovalevs? Like, srsly, why are they? I'm really struggling to find something constructive to say so I'm just gonna keep my trap shut, I'm sure they're working hard and everything. I want to burn their costumes for heat.
Sara and Nicco: I'm trash for this team, which is why some of the things they do irritate me so. This program is so snoozy and so schmaltzy, I checked out multiple times throughout. The appliqués and stoning on her dress are truly random, and it looks like they borrowed his shirt from the local decommissioned opera house. His pants need to be a different color. I'd give them completely new outfits, they're so pretty, they look like they stepped out of a movie and they deserve movie star-worthy costumes. And can we please figure out the wedgie issues already? It looks so painful! I like the balayage but it's so yellow and inexpertly done. Another great team that needs just a liiiitle more elevation of the presentation and music choices to be stunning, this is all a bit below them, they have this classic pair quality that I'd been yearning for for so long and I need them to be contenders, you know?
Anyway, on to my love/hate discipline, the dance!
Oh my gosh, Fashionista Nonny, I've been sick as a dog, and had a full nyquil induced hallucination sequence that I posted this and added comments. I can't remember what those were, so I'm just going to post for the people, because you're such an icon!

'Transformers' – When alien robots attack on HBO Max
‘Transformers’ – When alien robots attack on HBO Max
The first live-action Transformers (2007) movie, based on a line of toy action figures that spawned a series of animated TV shows and a 1986 animated feature, is a screeching metal, smash-and-crash, extreme action movie lover’s wet dream. It’s also a wildly absurd, visceral fantasy and far more fun than it ought to be. The premise: the Transformers are living robots that fold themselves into all…

Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow?
I just love Tyler Hoechlin on Superman & Lois. His Clark Kent rocks chunky cable-knit cardigans, pivots his Metropolitan family into farming, and pours a nightly glass of white wine for his badass wife. Dad goals aplenty — and when he suits up to catch a falling bridge in China, he waves to a rescued bystander. No big deal, his smile says, all in a day's work. It's a classic version of the most classic superhero, an ageless paternal hunk rendered puny behind glasses and the last tie any print journalist will ever wear.
But the hit CW drama already revealed another possible Man of Steel, a world-destroying alternate Superman introduced in a flashback eye-barbecuing an army. He wears black, just like Henry Cavill's resurrected Kal-El in Zack Snyder's Justice League. And that four-hour HBO Max event ends with a premonition of Superman gone mad, driven murderous by the death of Lois Lane (Amy Adams). These fallen gods have company. Amazon Prime Video's The Boys features Antony Starr as Homelander, an über-American sociopath. He shares a streaming service with Omni-Man (voiced by J.K. Simmons), the greatest defender of Invincible's Earth, who finishes up his series premiere ripping apart his fake Justice League one spinal cord at a time. Let's put a pin in calling the Utopian (Josh Duhamel) nefarious, but the patriarch of Netflix's upcoming Jupiter's Legacy has dark secrets. And his troubled son Brandon (Andrew Horton) wears a red-caped blue costume I would describe as "lawsuit-proof." (The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making its own moves in this direction, with the briefly bad resurrected Vision and a new Captain America covering his shield with fresh blood.)
An optimistic read would classify the Evil Superman glut as countercultural activism: a middle finger to the boomers from Generation Harley Quinn. The classic character offers easy signifiers to deconstruct. He is toxically masculine, supremely white, a whole surveillance state unto himself. Comparisons to certain monster presidents and canceled icons are welcome. "I know you want me to be like you," Homelander's son (Cameron Crovetti) tells the star-spangled pyscho. "But Dad, I'm not." That kid goes on to incinerate Homelander's Nazi girlfriend: Great job, youth! Meanwhile, Invincible's real star is Omni-Man's son, Mark (Steven Yeun), a sincere do-gooder. Their malicious elders stand in for larger societal decay. And even the WarnerMedia-approved Supermen withstand suspicion from paranoid worlds. Cavill's hero spent a whole movie proving to Batman (Ben Affleck) that he wasn't a bad guy; apparently, the next movie would have proved Batman right. Hoechlin's yearning sincerity sticks out like a sore thumb in modern-day Smallville, a depleted land of meth explosions and bank foreclosures. Recent events in our own world offer little hope for a brighter future. Everything has gone wrong with everything. Why should the Man of Tomorrow be any different?
There's a long history of Superman turning bad; there's a long history of Superman doing anything. Way back in 1964, he met Ultraman, a dastardly double from Earth-Three. The '90s brought a Terminator-ish super-doppelgänger, who pretended to be Superman before destroying fake Los Angeles. Hoechlin already played a different black-suited impostor in a 2018 CW crossover. There are multiverse scenarios where he's raised by Soviets, Nazis, or Darkseid. In the 2000s Justice League cartoon, another Superman executes his Lex Luthor, a defensible act that slippery-slopes into dystopic oppression.
Break one rule and you break them all: That's the implicit threat of Evil Superman, and the nasty thrill of Injustice, a videogame-comic saga where Lois Lane's death drives Superman superbad totalitarian. (Clark's son plays Injustice 2 on Superman & Lois.) In the classic 1986 tale "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" written by Alan Moore and drawn by Curt Swan, Kal-El retires from superheroism after taking a villain's life. "Nobody has the right to kill," he says, "Not Mxyzptlk, not you, not Superman... especially not Superman." Look past the outrageous impossibility of saying "Mxyzptlk" out loud, and it's one of the great quotes of comic book history. This Superman believes even a wholly justifiable homicide spoils his moral code. A generation later, that's where these stories begin.

Inspired by the iconic mid-1990s DC story from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two continues as the Holiday Killer is still at large and, with Bruce Wayne under the spell of the venomous Poison Ivy, Batman is nowhere to be found. Liberated by an unlikely ally, Bruce quickly uncovers the real culprit: Poison Ivy’s employer Carmine Falcone. The Roman, his ranks decimated by Holiday and his business spinning out of control, has been forced to bring on less desirable partners – Gotham City’s rogues’ gallery. In the meantime, Harvey Dent is confronting battles on two fronts: attempting to end the mob war while also dealing with a strained marriage. And, after an attack that leaves Harvey hideously disfigured, the District Attorney unleashes the duality of his psyche that he’s strived his entire life to suppress. Now, as Two-Face, Dent decides to take the law into his own hands and deliver judgment to those who’ve wronged him, his family and all of Gotham. Ultimately, the Dark Knight must put together the tragic pieces that converged to create Two-Face, the Holiday Killer, Batman and Gotham City itself.
