Voltage Inc characters and romantic and cliche tropes they failed miserably (Headcanons)

Author's note: Recently, I remembered that my friends and I actually lived through some cliche tropes that are usually considered romantic, yet in our cases, they failed miserably. So, this post was inspired by reality. 

Characters: Hideki Ishigami, Hyogo Kaga, Togo Daimon, Shu Hasunuma, Eiichi Matsunaga, Toshiki Kasumi

The tropes: Sharing a bed, marriage proposal of convenience, soulmates, "threesome invitation"

Eiichi Matsunaga & Toshiki Kasumi - forced proximity (sharing a bed): They visit a different city and rent a room together. The staff messes up and gives them their last room, which has only one bed. After spending the entire day busy, they return to their room to relax. Suddenly, the people in the next room start a steamy sex session with moans and moving beds. Matsunaga looks at Kasumi, who is in a relationship with MC. "Someone is having a good time," and they burst out laughing. Nothing happens. When they leave, they find out that the room they stayed in is cheaper than the original one. (Real story: The hotel my exchange colleague and I booked messed up our booking, so we had to share a bed. He was gay and in a relationship. When we returned from Machu Picchu, the couple in the next room was having steamy sex. The way we laughed was legendary. At least we paid less.)

Shu Hasunuma, Togo Daimon & MC - marriage proposal of convenience: MC came to Japan to study. She is Shu's classmate from university and friend. When Togo has to move abroad, it coincidentally is MC's home country. Shu introduces MC to Togo. MC tells him he can stay with her parents because he has some issues with the booking. MC's parents are kind to him and show him around. When Togo returns to Japan, he meets MC to thank her. "Do you want to marry me? I want to meet your parents again and visit the country more often." MC laughs it off but secretly considers it so she can get Japanese citizenship. (Real story: My friend's Japanese friend from ERASMUS wanted to visit my home country. My parents took him in and showed him around. When he returned, he asked me to marry him so he could get my country's citizenship and meet my parents again. I laughed it off, but his Japanese citizenship isn't easy to refuse. No, I'm not married.)

Hideki Ishigami & MC - soulmates: MC meets Ishigami online. He invites her to stay at his for a weekend. Without them meeting before, she accepts. They spend a lot of time together talking about their favorite books, their goals & dreams, and their past. Suddenly, Ishigami tells her that his birthday is on 09/09. MC laughs and doesn't believe him. He shows her his ID. MC takes her ID out and shows him she was also born on 09/09. They don't kiss, only cuddle. By the end of the weekend, they decide that they have to meet again. They meet again in another country a few months later. (Real story: My friend had an ERASMUS exchange. She met someone on the internet. After clicking in instantly, she found out he was born on 01/01. She shows him that she was born on 01/01/01. They decide to meet again but don't know when. A few months later, they accidentally meet in another city and another country. They have never dated, however.)

Hyogo Kaga, one of his hook-ups & Hideki Ishigami - some strange threesome porn trope: Kaga and Ishigami are forced to share a room while being on a mission when they are still in Public Safety Academy. Kaga gets to the room sooner than Ishigami and brings a girl he had met earlier in the bar. Ishigami, who returned tired and sleepy, wants to take a shower. "Can you leave the room so I can shower?" Kaga laughs in his face and convinces the girl to stay. He looks at Ishigami with a challenging smile: "Why? You can't change with someone else in the room?" The tired Ishigami, who can't take Kaga's bullshit anymore, looks at both of them and starts to strip in front of them. When he is finally naked, he goes to the shower looking at the couple, who has their mouths open. When Ishigami returns, there's no one else in the room. (Real story: An acquaintance got fed up with her roommate, who always had her boyfriend in the room. When she wanted to get changed and shower, the boyfriend refused to leave. So, she stripped right in front of both of them.)

I've been waiting for this!! ty for this shi finally I can ramble a little about my thoughts about them... prepare yourself to get more than 4 points

Mego was pretty much a traditionally reserved princess when she first entered his household. She underwent a major culture shock at how the Date household operates and honestly found him (and his whole army) incredibly outlandish and didn't really make a good example/rep of how a samurai should look or act. As she grows up and matures alongside him, however, she's... gotten pretty much used to them and even picked up the whole English shtick ("Let's party!!"), although she would quickly try to correct herself if one accidentally catches her blurting out foreign swear words ("Shit!") so openly.

She used to think that being subservient and passively obeying him would actually gain her a favor as his wife, but thank God he proved her wrong by actively encouraging her to be more outspoken and headstrong just like him. Now she really doesn't hold herself back when it comes to speaking up her mind and criticizing him when it's needed.

They apparently share the same interest and hobby in reading Chinese classics! (apparently this was a big thing among Japanese nobles back then) I'd say they often have nerding out moments together and this is actually one of the first things they found out they have in common in their earlier years.

Though most of her combat training (especially the hand-to-hand combat part) was spent with Katakura Kita (Kojuro's older sister), Masamune actually had a hand in training her how to fight, especially in the swordsmanship department. He also gifted her a tachi and a tantou as means of self-defense. As a result, the way she fights with a sword would somewhat resemble his own fighting style, barring the six sword technique of course. In particular, I can see her performing the Hell Dragon technique with her own flair!

Their marriage was at its lowest point when they both lost their fathers in consecutive years (his father was shot dead as a hostage to the rivaling clan, her father presumably from an illness or died in battle). It was absolutely not a good time for both of them, but they got over it, thankfully. Conflict does build character, after all.

"O-of course I'm already thoroughly prepared if you want a child someday... y-you just need to tell me when you are ready, okay?" *looks away and blushes profusely*

Mego would usually gift him an omamori / protective charm and slip it within his armor before he heads out to a campaign. If it's still intact when he gets back home, then she'd simply ask him to keep it rather than returning it to her. Keep it as something to remember her by.

On the other hand, I think he likes giving her gifts like accessories (hairpins, jewelries), ornaments (hand fan, etc) or outfits that align with his tastes. Even when occasionally it doesn't match her taste, she doesn't really have the heart to say no, as it is a gift that he does put his thoughts into.

Whenever he gets back home after weeks, or a month or two passing, she would get a little teary eyed, like, "Welcome home... 🥹🥹🥹" and if he asks back like, "Mego, are you crying?" then she would simply reply, "N-no... what are you talking about..." but seconds later she would burst into actual tears and hug him really tight (like she'd bury her face right onto his chest so no one can see her awful crying expression) without caring that they're being watched by others. Now, wipe off her tears and kiss!!

There is also a pure headcanon scenario where I imagine that instead of using his soldiers Matsunaga is taking her as the hostage during that one mini arc in the anime but honestly that's not a good thing and it's best not to think about it that much. :^)

Ramblings of an Old Man

Fire is a fascinating mechanism, don’t you think?  It is destructive, yet warming, how its flames engulf the area around you.  In one second, it could be your greatest ally, saving you from the brink of death with its heat and light, in the next catching you inside it as it burns your entire being to ash.  It can be tamed, predicted…but it is also wild and can end you at any second if the time is right.  

Perhaps this is the reason why I am drawn to fire as I am, something that I never had any full control over, despite my talent over it.  Or the fact that it was everything, yet nothing.  Passionate in its destruction, but passive when it came to its goals.  A reflection of myself in many ways.  With the snap of my fingertips, I could set the battle field ablaze…or this particular solider because, heh heh, well…wrong place at the wrong time.  

It is fun, most amusing…gives me some warmth in the heart that had always been gray and cold. Dull, lifeless in a way.  Or psychotic, wouldn’t you say, dear reader? Or would it be sociopath, the more proper term?  Perhaps even both, for like the flames, being psychotic sociopathic could be two sides of the same coin...but, I must ask, where did this coin come from?

What does it mean to be psychotic, a sociopath, insane compared to the sane?  What are emotions that drives these factors in humans?  Are they from the mind, the matter that governs our bodies, or the energy inside us referred to as souls?  So many questions…and one would believe after surviving the game of a goddess I would have at least a hint of the answer.  Or a demigod, an immortal…a demon king, a few monsters here and there…  I even have met a husk of a man, a ninja with no voice.  Yet still…it puzzles me how some feel a great wave of emotion, yet others do not.  

Have you ever thought of that, dear reader?  Why you feel warmth or cold, pain and aches, light and heavy weights from your heart? Perhaps you could tell me…I would very much like to know.  And I wonder…do you even enjoy, want, these chemical reactions that effect your state of mind?  Would you trade it to feel nothing, or to feel everything?  Or would a fire tornado filled with the obnoxious sounds of howling cries be the answer to it all.  I will leave it up to your judgement.

Ah, but I feel I have kept you long enough.  I imagine you are skimming this little drabble by now, wondering what the point of my words were.  If you paid attention, that is…heh heh, I know your generation has a very small attention span.  Always in a hurry, always in a need to accomplish the next thing…  It is an admirable thing, honestly.  Do keep it up, keep your motivations and drives. And watch the world burn around you and your passion.

Slowly, she turned the glass in her hand, making sure to catch all the water droplets that had gotten caught up in it after washing it.

The day was almost - ALMOST - over, and thankfully, there were only a handful of patrons left, that she had to tend to. But she had called for the last round a while ago and one by one, they started to get up and leave. She heaved a relieved sigh, knowing she didn’t have to tend to any more shady people that came to visit her in the small Izakaya. Everyone always sat alone or in silence with each other, and God knew who did what business under the surfaces of the tables. But Ise was in enough trouble as it was, she didn’t want to bother even thinking about more.

The reason for her troubled life? Tall, black hair, black uniform.

Did Aizawa Shouta belong into this shady establishment? Not really. But did he look like he fit there? Totally. If he hadn’t ever so often lifted his glass and the Gin Tonic didn’t reflect in the weak lighting of the room, she might not have noticed him at all anymore. He would just sit there, in silence if he must, sometimes conversing with her over the counter if he got a seat. People were starting to spread rumors as to why an underground hero could be there, showing vague interest in the bartender.

Everything he did was shredded in mystery. From the times he showed up, the weekdays he decided on blessing her with his presence, to his orders, and how talkative he was. Just that day, he had done nothing but sit across the room, watching her, watching the entrance. Ever so often, he’d order water between two Gin Tonics, and otherwise, he was no presence to be reckoned. It was downright nerve-wracking for her, knowing she had to keep her composure at all cost or her little card house of lying would break down with just one little shove.

And yet, if their meeting had been under normal circumstances, she might have still found him mysterious, yet his presence would have pulled the ground from under her for very different reasons than because he was on her tracks to get her caught. Maybe, if they had met differently, they could have joked around with each other, and she would have given him a drink for free ever so often. Who could have known, he might have become her favorite patron.

After all, when he spoke, he spoke of things she wanted to know more about, hear more about. She wanted him to tell her about the students he mentioned he was teaching, and she wanted him to cut himself off before revealing something he thought was too confidential, only to give her a small hint still. Ise wanted to hear about his missions and how bad the last one had been, even though he had captured the villain in the end, and she wanted him to toast to her again while smiling as she made an admiring comment towards his work. Maybe she also just really wanted to have him question her again, just for the sake of him talking in a way that took away the fear she had of what would happen if she would get caught for her past doings.

But all that was left after a long day at work was him, still as mysterious as the day she met him.

I mean considering it took this long to finally find a proper painting of Matsunaga, it’s probably not that weird for the paintings to just be neglected and forgotten forever...

But like... right now we do not have a properly identified contemporary painting of Nobutaka tho. 

Though... Nobunaga, Nobutada, and Nobukatsu’s paintings are sometimes mislabelled as each other online. Maybe one of these is actually Nobutaka and it’s, like, just wrongly labelled. Maybe. IDK.  

Make the spawns headcanon worse: they’re actually triplets. Once a spawn is like 4 or 5 it’s less noticeable that they’re actually one year older.

Tetsurō Kuroo & Mikasa Matsunaga Headcanon List

Mikasa first noticed how girls would flock to the gym during Kuroo's morning and afternoon practices for volleyball (she would observe this on her way to the vending machines after classes)

He appeared to have every girl in the palm of his hands.

- Mikasa was the exception.

The two were in the same class their third year at Nekoma and were always neck and neck for the number one spot, Mikasa had a rivalry going with him.

tbh Kuroo didn't really care...he was just in it for the banter and entertainment.

He initially thought that his feelings for her would be just a short-lived crush, nothing but a little thing he could laugh about later down the line.

But instead, their friendship only grew stronger which in turn made his feelings grow as well

After she becomes manager, he initially thinks there is finally someone (aside from yaku) who could straighten up the team.

He was partially right since Mikasa appears very intimidating, but he was also wrong.

Mikasa ends up actually being a huge dork and gets along with every member on the team. (they still get scared of her though)

He loves the way Mikasa smiles and her laugh.

Kuroo's supposed short-lived crush ended up growing into something unprecedentedly uncontrollable and intense that he couldn’t brush it aside anymore

Cheesy pick-up lines and compliments every so often.

Mikasa doesn't really get the hint, she interprets his 'flirting' as some new way of teasing of his.

Yaku and Takamoto catch onto this little thing going on between Mikasa and their scheming captain.

Sure, she’ll whisper ridiculously lewd things to him on the side, but most of the time she's actually pretty quiet.

When Kuroo first saw Mikasa assist with practice, his eyes couldn't avert from her because of the "aura" she demonstrated. He could not take his eyes off of her. He later stated to her that she looked so cool, followed by a cheeky smirk, to which Mikasa became extremely flustered.

Kuroo admires everything about Mikasa, but loves her confidence the most.

Remember that episode where Kojuro fights Matsunaga? What if Kojuro brought his wife with him and Matsunaga started flirting with her? Knowing how jealous he is and how creepy Matsunaga can be I would love to read headcanons or a scenario!

This episode is a favourite of mine and I like them both, so it’s perfect. I am far from being good enough to write a full blown scenario for this because it would be venom-dripping in every word said by Matsunaga AND Kojuro. I think both are great in trash talking the others with “nice” words.

- it wasn’t Kojuro’s intention to bring her with him. She followed him and when he was weakened by the poison, she stepped in and helped him

- to the absolute glee of Matsunaga. At the first moment, he stays silent, watching her with half-lidded eyes, marveling at every point of her

- Kojuro would openly threat him just for that, making Matsunaga laugh

- of course Matsunaga would brag about his collection and how wonderfully she would fit into it, decorated with nothing but the purest silk on her body.

- this would be around the time when Kojuro will draw his blade, stepping between his wife and Matsunaga

- and he is ignored. Completely. Matsunaga comes closer, simply pushes the blade out of his way and dares to touch Kojuro’s wife

- this is the moment where the poison begins to affect Kojuro and when he breaks down, his wife is at his side

- of course Matsunaga offers the antidote for her life and she agrees without thinking twice in order to save her husband

- THAT’S the breaking point for Kojuro. Seeing his wife with Matsunaga like this? This man will get up and fight with his enemy without any honorable rules and anything. There will be sword fighting, biting, kicking in the balls, it doesn’t matter, he wants that bastard dead.

- (luckily) Matsunaga is a good fighter and doesn’t mind a dirtier fight. He loves how riled up Kojuro has gotten and will even add some choice words about the beauty of his wife and how much she will outshine every piece of his collection, or that she doesn’t belong to a dirty province like Oshu

- this is a fight of life and death and will only end if Matsunaga disappears, leaving an invitation to Kojuro’s wife to visit him. The man is smart and knows that he can’t win against Kojuro. But he loves the thrill of pure blood hungry fighters.

- there will be more meetings like this when he is in the mood. He will kidnap Kojuro’s wife almost like a game and then fight with Kojuro, leaving the poor man battered and pissed off as hell, but as a winner with his wife saved

- in a very sentimental moment, Matsunaga might wish for the same love, but then he turns to his ever loyal collection and is more than happy to be alone

- he just does it to piss off Kojuro at this time and he doesn’t quite know what to do if he ever should win.

favorite thing about them: I genuinely love how he looks--his aesthetic. If he were an anime character he’d have arguably my favorite character design. It all works together so well--the scarf, the pistol, and even the way he presents himself in his kimono. I love how he’s equal parts foppish and intelligent. He’s the youngest brother, he’s the smartest brother, and he’s going to make sure he’s one good looking gangster damn it. I also love the brief comedic touches Nakadai adds to the character that really scream “yeah this is the youngest sibling alright”. 

least favorite thing about them: Well...he is a gangster, and a bastard at that. A lovable bastard, but a bastard nevertheless. (Alternatively: He’s a character that deserved more focus. I feel like he has potential to be fleshed out more, but I know Kurosawa’s whole point was not making a sympathetic gangster ala Matsunaga from Drunken Angel. Not saying Unosuke should be sympathetic—but rather explored more from a character front.) 

favorite line: "Who’s banging that prayer drum? I don’t need any prayers…” (Here I think the audience gets that Unosuke is self aware and knows that he’s getting what he deserves. It’s bits like this in the movie coupled with Nakadai’s acting that I think flesh out the character a bit for me.)

brOTP: Sanjuro and Unosuke, because Kurosawa robbed us of a great bromance that could have been. Mainly, though, because they recognize each other as equals and seem to see each other as necessary threats. Unosuke even calls Sanjuro “two-bit” like some sort of nickname at some points.

OTP: None. Tbh I think Unosuke would probably be a pretty shit boyfriend considering.

random headcanon: Unosuke is a spitting image of his father, except his father was actually a good man. Another is that he has a drive to prove himself and is more insecure than he comes across. 

unpopular opinion: I think in general I probably like this character moreso than Kurosawa intended for the audience to—but I don’t think I’m alone on this front. You cast a charismatic actor in a villain role--what do you expect, exactly?

favorite thing about them: His devotion to justice. I love the fact that he’s willing to work with Lupin when he recognizes that there are bigger criminals to take down and does have respect for him.

Luke Skywalker

favorite thing about them: I like how Luke has limits, interestingly enough. He’s willing to believe in the best in people up to a point—in the OG trilogy he wants to believe in the good in his father but recognizes that it may be too late for him. Regardless, he keeps that hope. It’s a realistic bit of character building that people can emphasize with.

least favorite thing about them: He’s too stubborn at some points and that costs him quite a bit over the course of the story. Also he was originally whiny but then again—he changes over the course of the story.

favorite line: “You failed, your Highness. I am a Jedi like my father before me”. Beautifully poetic line and gives me all sorts of feelings.

fav characters: I adore more than half of the entire cast of characters!!! Date Masamune continues to be my #1, along with Sanada Yukimura. Love Kojuro, Motochika, Uesugi Kenshin!!! Shima Sakon, Mitsunari, Ieyasu, Keiji and some side characters like MUSASHI (please love the crazy beach bum) and Kanetsugu the Invincible!! I’ve even got a growing love for the baddies like Hanbei, Matsunaga (only bcuz he’s super fab dressed but still gross tea uncle) and well the list goes on…

least fav characters: A few. Not a big fan of Otomo Sorin (he makes me laugh sometimes but ehhhh), Goto Matabei (his design is interesting but the way he fights in the game is horrific), Pontiff Zabi (do i need to explain why?), Itsuki (she has a good story and cause for fighting but playing as her is difficult and her design is meh), and a few others that are kinda in the middle on my list. Baddies like Akechi Mitsuhide, Oda Nobunaga, Maria They are necessary ‘bad guys’ for the story, and very important to Sengoku history, but they can be so…disturbing.

fav relationship: #1 by far is Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura!!! AZURE X CRIMSON FOREVER!!! I’m pretty sure their rivalry was what got me hooked in the first place. Also, I really love the master/retainer/brotherly relationship between Masamune and Kojuro. Season 2 solidified that dragon bond. Ugh…the tragedy that is Ieyasu and Mitsunari’s broken friendship! Shed many tears over those two! Nagamasa’s love for Oichi is beautiful! Also a big fan of Motochika and Saika, especially the way she can smack him around when he’s being dumb. Ieyasu’s bond/friendship with Motochika! Hanbei’s desperate loyalty to Hideyoshi, and how he passed it on to Mitsunari!! I kinda also like the odd friendship between Tenkai and Hideyaki, to throw in something different. Oh dear, I could go on. I love all the relationships!

fav moment: Out of basically 3 seasons of anime I have a lot! Of course all the times when Masamune and Yukimura fought, flames and sparks! Season 2 had the most gems I think. Hanbei tempting Kojuro then kidnapping him! The men of Date piling on Masamune to shield him from Hideyoshi (also Hideyoshi PUNCHING THE OCEAN!) Just a lot of Date feels because they portrayed Masamune as more responsible to his men and clan in the second season. All the retainer feels with Kojuro!! Yukimura stopping Mori’s enormous Sundial machine WITH HIS BARE HANDS! A lot of favorites in Judge End, Mitsunari’s speech atop Osaka castle, the flash back of Ieyasu and Mitsunari working TOGETHER! Kojuro punching sense into BONTENMARU! Masamune reeling back realizing he almost killed his rival Yukimura and then later they basically have a surprise date at a tea house! Omg I have so many more!! TAT

headcanons/theories: I haven’t really thought about this much, because I like the stories as they are. I guess I could say I have some thoughts about Ieyasu’s true feelings about the whole betraying friends and bonds in order to create bonds, and the darkness he hides behind his sunshine smile. I know lots of fans either love Ieyasu or hate him for what he did. Personally I’ve just tried to understand from his point of view. Looking at the bigger picture and being willing to sacrifice things for the greater good. And that really he’s crying so much on the inside over the things he’s chosen to do. But it’s for the best, for the future. Also I have so many thoughts about Kenshin and Shingen’s origin story that I’d love to flesh out someday. Like their early days as young hot-blooded rivals. I’m not sure if these count, but as I said I haven’t really put much thought into it.

unpopular opinion: Not sure about this one. Maybe my views on the different relationships?

how’d you find it: I forget which came first, the game or the anime, since I found them at pretty much the same time. But I can say I played the game “Sengoku Basara 3: Samurai Heroes” first. I’d never played a hack-n-slash game before, but I loved the fast paced crazy energy and then it translated into the anime too. I owe it to my sister who found it initially and told me about it since she knew how much I loved samurai.

random thoughts: I have been in this fandom for years, don’t think I’ll ever leave it. It’s exciting and crazy with such a huge cast of characters and designs and element powers and motorcycle horses and solar eclipses and punching and shouting and TM Revolution and rivalry bromance and fabulous and dragons and tigers and LET’S PARTY!!!! It’s insane and I love it so much!

“Yikes,” Ise grunted, quickly running towards the hut of the bus stop, happy to find something to stand underneath. Shouta followed in a much more leisurely pace, but still keeping up with her, both their feets pittering through the little puddles on the ground. He had fewer problems with the rain as it was a regular part of his nightly patrols where it would oftentimes rain or storm even.

“What a downpour,” she complained, brushing back some of her wet hair and hugging herself to stay warm. They were still too far away from either their apartments to run there really quick, but she was glad to be out of the rain at least for a while. Silently, she watched as Shouta shook lightly, getting the wet strands of hair out of his face, too, and sighed.

“Did you ever notice that happens to us quite often?” he asked, and for a split second, she thought to see a grin appear on his face. “The rain?” Ise questioned, furrowing her brows in confusion. “Getting stuck somewhere together…” he only mumbled, turning to look at the bus plan next to him. Even though she was wet to the bone, with the wind howling mercilessly through the streets around them, she couldn’t help but feel a sudden warmth cover her cheeks, knowing it was just a tease from him.

“Talk about bad timing for a storm to show up,” Shouta noted, and as if on cue, a strong blow hit the two of them, taping their clothes to their bodies while both of their faces were decorated with a frown. “Next bus in 20 minutes.”

“That’s not too bad,” she noted, setting down the shopping bag in her hand to walk up and down the bus station. “Maybe we should have stayed in the store, though.”

“Not to give you any blame for it, Miss Matsunaga, but you were really insistent on going outside.” It was like this always. He’d remind her of something she did wrong and then chuckle innocently so she couldn’t stay mad at him and had to retaliate. “Yeah, yeah…” Ise replied sighing. Barely, she could control the sound of his laugh echoing through her mind, something, she had grown rather fond of.

Stealing glances at him, she watched him brush his fingers through his hair, black clothes sticking to his muscular body. Certainly, he had given her rather unpleasant impressions at first, but the longer she knew him, the harder it was for her to not take note of his good sides too. It was, after all, a little less lonely having to go home in the late hours of the day after work, with him by her side.

So even though he was a hero and she was a mere criminal that he tried to catch red-handed, she liked him keeping her company. Even more, she really began to like him. Sighing loudly, she squatted down right before where rain could reach her, watching as the little droplets came down one after the other. Ise let her eyes shift from side to side, lantern to lantern that illuminated the dark night.

She really, really shouldn’t be catching feelings for him, and she knew. It was only some time until he caught her, or she’d have to disappear underground for a while until she was freed of his constant shadowing. Even the getting stuck together was only caused because both of them were so insistent on outwitting each other that they got into all kinds of situations when they met. And while she - somewhere in her heart, desperately - wanted it to continue, the threat of her former accomplice weighed too much as that the two could find anything besides tragedy.

Lost in thought, she didn’t notice him come up to her, squatting down so close to her body that their knees inevitably touched. For a moment, she considered shying away, but the touch was warm, and she found herself craving it more than the fear of him. Shouta wasn’t even looking at her, much less in the way she was peeking at him through her eyelashes. His eyes were almost like hers before, watching the street and moving from one lantern to the other. But in it, she could see something that she lacked on so many different levels.

Vigilance. Knowledge. Tenderness. Contentment - with himself or with what he was doing, she wasn’t sure. But it was there. It was beautiful.

“It’s not so bad…” she started, dragging her finger from the wet ground into the safe space they were situated at. From it, she could watch the water slowly coming closer, breaking into the dry place and spreading out from there, now that she had broken the edge between the two.

“What is?” he asked, a mere mumble without even giving her much thought.

“Getting stuck somewhere with you…” she confessed, crossing her arms on her legs, hoping to be able to hide her face behind them.

“I’m glad,” he muttered, hands clenching in his lap, wringing with each other as a sudden thought seemed to take him over. “I just wish it wasn’t in this situation.”

Maybe she had heard him wrong, but even if that was the case, she couldn’t help but sympathize with the sentiment, knowing all too well what he meant. Not in that time and space. Not as hero and robber.

“Maybe next time,” Ise whispered into her sleeves, a hint of sadness in her eyes. Shouta let out a melodic hum, followed by a deep breath and a small nod.

“That would be nice,” was the last thing he mentioned before the lights of the bus approached the two, sounding the bell of separation for that evening. But at least in her heart, she could hope that ‘next time’ would come soon, though it was unlikely for it to go as well as she hoped for.
