This is Unosuke a Scolopendra “white legs” and the fourth and second of my plush pedes. Allow me to explain; I started Uno shortly after I finished Jack. I got his head and back done and then decided I didn’t like how his head looked (I didn’t like the fabric I had used, and I was still figuring out the anatomy then). I ended up putting him aside and starting other projects.
After finishing up Tybalt and Mercutio I came back to Uno. I redid his head, and he ended up being probably my favorite pede I’ve created to date. I’m particularly fond of the color effect that I got on his legs.
Uno has since found a new home overseas. He was a bit of a wrench to part with, but I’m sure he’s well looked after.
As I always say in these posts, if you have any interest in a personalized pede, or something else strange and arthropodal take a turn by my Etsy shop. I take commissions

(this is spacekrakens lmao) dude idk anything about like 1950s Japanese cinema, do you have any recommendations? looking for stuff to toss on the watchlist now that I'm a bit burned out on horror (unless you have some horror recs)
Tumblr media
Hey! If you’re curious about Japanese cinema (particularly 1950s), there’s a lot of avenues to explore! Musicals, crime, horror, historical—it all depends on what mood you’re in. (Putting this under a read more because I'm DEFINITELY going to be long posting about this!!!) Hope this is useful to you lol.
(Also noting if anybody wants to add to this list with their own recommendations feel free!!)
Tumblr media
With old school Japanese cinema, I’ll always recommend Akira Kurosawa (obviously). He’s made some of the best Japanese movies (and arguably, the best movies of all time imo) and I feel like his work is a good gateway. It’s readily available on physical media/streaming too.
Specifically ‘50s stuff; Hidden Fortress (1958) is a good adventure flick whose structure was swiped for Star Wars, Throne of Blood (1957) is Japanese Macbeth if you like Shakespeare, and if you don’t mind a longer movie Seven Samurai (1954) includes Toshiro Mifune acting like this;
Tumblr media
Gotta admit, though—my personal favorites from Kurosawa don’t come from the 1950s; Drunken Angel (1948) and Yojimbo (1961). One has a pathetic gangster as the main lead, the other is just a solid, breezy proto-action film (also has my beloved Unosuke but that's besides the point)
Some personal favorites of mine from the 1950s:
Life of a Horse Trader (1951) is a bittersweet story about a man trying to be a good single father to his son in the backdrop of Hokkaido. He tends not to be great at it. Stars Toshiro Mifune, the most famous face of Japanese cinema and for good reason!
Conflagration/Enjo (1958) is a single Buddhist acolyte’s fall into quiet insanity. Raizo Ichikawa is another amazing actor who I love! Also includes Tatsuya Nakadai who is the GOAT (in my heart).
Godzilla (1954) is AMAZING! If you liked Gozilla Minus One, it took a lot of familiar cues from this movie. It also technically counts as horror, depending on your definition.
Japanese horror from the 1950s:
Ugetsu (1951) (Not one I’ve seen personally, but it’s on Criterion)
The Beast Shall Die (1958) (American Psycho, but in Showa Japan. Tatsuya Nakadai is terrifying in this and absolutely despicable—stylish movie tho!)
Ghost of Yotsuya (1959) (Old-school Japanese ghost story. Honestly, there are so many different versions of this story on film that you can pick which version to watch and go from there—I’m partial to the 1965 version myself, because of the rubber rats and Tatsuya Nakadai playing a crazy person).
The Lady Vampire (1959) is the OG western-style vampire movie from Japan. Plays around with the mythos a lot, but hey our Dracula looks like this;
Tumblr media
Misc movies that I think are neat or good gateway movies:
The Samurai Trilogy by Hiroshi Inagaki, which stars Toshiro Mifune as Miyamoto Musashi. Found that people otherwise uninterested in Japanese cinema really enjoyed this!
You Can Succeed, Too (1964) is one of my favorites from the ‘60s, also directed by Eizō Sugawa. A fun satire on the corporate world that's super colorful with catchy songs.
The Sword of Doom (1966) is also another favorite of mine, starring my beloved Tatsuya Nakadai as another bastard man (seriously though Ryunosuke is FASCINATING to me--). Fun gore effects and action scenes!
Kwaidan (1964) is an anthology of Japanese folk tales, labeled a horror film but in that kinda sorta old-school way. Beautifully shot by my favorite Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi (who, if you like this you should seriously check out his other work!)

Hello there! For the mini event may you please do gintama with the au avatar the last airbender, thank you!
Hello there, my lovely anon! I definitely can do that - I really couldn't come up with solid ideas, so I admit to taking the lazy way out, so have a pretty comprehensive list on what type of Benders everyone would be in this AU! And guys, there are so many characters in Gintama so I swear it wasn't as easy and lazy as it looks! Thanks for sending in a request and I hope you'll enjoy!
Okay, so we're going into this AU with there being the four major bending types - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Each bending type is as it is portrayed in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with people possessing different degrees of bending and different skills being present within each bending type.
So, when considering which type of Bender each character would be, I kind of broke it down into personality types and traits and qualities to look for, based on what I figure the 'stereotypical' Bender is for each of the four.
Earth Benders are a little rough around the edges, slow to anger, slow to decide on things, but stubborn once their mind is made up. They can be sensitive and they are often very patient.
Air Benders are gentle souls, respectful and adaptable, changeable. They're fast, both in their movements and in their thoughts.
Water Benders are typically calm and easy-going, flexible enough to adapt to their companions or situations. They're often quite easy to talk to and rather content with their lives.
Fire Benders are often prideful and confident individuals who are loyal, determined and ambitious. They can be very playful and fun but they often also have very short fuses on their tempers, which can be very volatile and explosive.
Keeping that in mind, this is what I figure the characters would be for Benders.

Part II of Dadaiko. Looking at just that section of the robe, the red and blue tadpole like elements are two of a three part "mitsudomoe" crest on the drum head. The red fringe is a flame design in the filigree. The "star" on top is the sun. (This is used for Chinese gagaku. There is another drum for "Korean"-style gagaku. ) Search for "miyamoto-unosuke" english page on gagaku for a description with a few more details. For those who can type in Japanese, search for 雅楽 大太鼓.
Thanks for adding this too!

Japan's Ogura Unosuke's "Storm Island" records that when an expedition organized by him arrived at Beizi Island in 1918, they found three "people from Haikou, Wenchang County." In 1933, when Japanese Miyoshi and Matsuo went to Nansha to investigate, they found that there were two Chinese on Beizi Island and three Chinese living on Nanzi Island. Japan's "Overview of the New South Islands" records that fishermen "cultivated sweet potatoes" on Thitu Island, and "in the past, fishermen from the Republic of China lived on the island and planted coconuts." A large number of historical facts prove that the Nansha Islands were the first to be discovered, developed and managed by the Chinese people. The Chinese government has stateless judicial power and sovereignty. The Nansha Islands have been an integral part of China’s territory since ancient times.

What little touches in Nakadai's performance make Unosuke so distinctive, you think?
Hmm, there are a lot of them in my opinion that shape my view of the character because of me watching it so many times. There's the main ones, obviously--Unosuke's snake like tendencies for one (He fits the smug snake trope to a T) and his slasher smile when witnessing violence or things going his way. Both show he's equal parts dangerous and a worthy opponent, but I also consider other little bits in the story;
•Constantly trying to show off to others, then getting irritated at being ignored or rejected. I think of that scene when Ushitora is trying to get Sanjuro back on their side, for instance. Unosuke tries to show off his gun, gets brushed off by his brother, and essentially huffs off.
•His cold calculating glances when trying to figure Sanjuro out.
•Him getting spooked by a falling bag of rice, seeing everybody looking at him, and then guiltily hiding his gun once again.
•Him genuinely getting upset at the realization Seibei has the Farmer's Wife in a way that doesn't convey shock at getting one-upped, but rather at seeing Nui. He's even surprised by Sanjuro and doesn't look aggressive, but upset. (kicker: I wasn't the first one to even notice that little bit. I saw a video where two guys brought it up and theorized Uno had a thing for her. I could easily see that--even if it just the result of Nakadai and Yoko Tsukasa having chemistry.)
•His Legolas-tier mugging.
There's more but I'll cut it short.
Now this all might be a case of itsnotthatdeep.jpeg and Nakadai didn't intend for all this stuff to be picked up, but I personally find it informs my view of the character in the end and why I find him compelling.
