Es el primer álbum de Stratovarius que cuenta con el bajista Lauri Porra y el guitarrista Matias Kupiainen, tras la salida del ex bajista Jari Kainulainen de la banda en 2005 y la salida del ex guitarrista Timo Tolkki en 2008. Timo Kotipelto, que en el momento del lanzamiento de Polaris había sido miembro de Stratovarius durante más tiempo (desde 1994) entre los miembros actuales, consideró a Polaris como "el álbum que salvó a la banda" y dijo que "sin él no habría ningún Stratovarius". Finnish Power Metal pioneers STRATOVARIUS are currently touring their home country for a few special spring shows. Last Friday night was the turn of Helsinki and the place chosen was no other than Nosturi, one of the most beloved concert venues in the Finnish capital, and which is sadly going to be demolished during this year. What originally seemed to be just one more gig in a career that spans over thirty years, ended up bringing a few nice surprises for their loyal fans. Some people were aware before the show that Timo Tolkki, former guitarist and main composer of the band, had announced in social media that he would attend the show and meet them ten years after his departure.

On this occasion there were no opening bands, so people came just in time for STRATOVARIUS’ show. The room was packed with metalheads of all ages, and as soon as the lights went down we knew we were in for a treat. After a short intro, the band came to the stage and kickstarted the show with ‘Eagleheart’, the overly melodic opening track of “Elements Pt. 1”. I must confess that this is not one of my favorite songs of theirs, but it seems to be popular among the fans. The crowd was as “excited” as you can expect from a Finnish audience, but after a few years living in this country I’ve gotten used to that and it doesn’t bother me anymore.

The next in line was the powerful ‘Phoenix’, which was quite a surprise since it hasn’t been part of their regular setlist during the last few years. Frontman Timo Kotipelto used the chance to greet the audience and thank them for coming. It’s amazing how this guy doesn’t seem to age, and although his voice has suffered a bit from all the years on the road, he still delivers some very high notes and manages to captivate the audience. He then introduced one of the new songs included in their latest compilation album “Enigma: Intermission 2”. I’m talking about ‘Oblivion’, a slower yet effective tune which features a more modern sound, and which was received with respect and approval by the crowd.

‘Shine in the Dark’ is one of their most recent hits, with quite good airplay till these days. The great vocal work of Kotipelto supported by Matias Kupiainen and Lauri Porra’s backing vocals, made this of the highlights of the first part of the set. Then they jumped back to 1998 with ‘SOS’, another deep cut that I wasn’t expecting to hear. The catchy melody of recently released ‘Enigma’ was performed for the first time in Helsinki, and with great results. At this point we have to say that although only two of the current members were part of the classic STRATOVARIUS line-up, Kupiainen, Porra and drummer Rolf Pilve have injected some fresh blood into the band.

One of the first special moments of the evening came with ‘4000 Rainy Nights’ preceded by a beautiful guitar intro by Kupiainen and followed by an innovative bass solo by Porra. This song brought me back to my teenage years, when I discover STRATOVARIUS for the first time in the early 2000’s. They continued with more material from “Destiny”, no other than the ten-minute epic title track, full of contrasts and succeeding at creating a mystic atmosphere. Then it was time for maestro Jens Johansson to shine in the keyboards and indulge us with the first cords of ‘Black Diamond’, one of their all-time classics that the crowd sung at the top of their lungs. The band leaves the stage for a little break.

The encore started with the lovely ballad ‘Forever’, which was the only reference to their masterpiece “Episode”, and which always proves to be a special moment of their show. But the greatest surprise of the evening would happen next, when they invited former drummer Jörg Michael to join them onstage and delight us with an unforgettable version of ‘The Kiss of Judas’. Although they didn’t have a lot of time to rehearse, the German powerhouse did not disappoint and seemed very happy with his fellow bandmates after so many years. A historic moment that we we’re lucky to witness. Rolf Pilve came back to the drumkit to perform the infectious ‘Unbreakable’, another of their latest radio hits taken from 2013’s “Nemesis”.

As usual, they closed the concert with ‘Hunting High and Low’, arguably their most successful song, one that features all their trademark elements and allows them to interact with the audience. After one and a half hours of majestic virtuosity, the local heroes left the stage for good with an overwhelming ovation. The band seemed very moved by the reaction of the crowd and later shared some pictures with Timo Tolkki and Jörg Michael backstage. For the first time in over a decade, four fifths of the classic STRATOVARIUS line-up shared the same room, with only bassist Jari Kainulainen missing. Apparently, some scars have slowly started to heal, opening a little hope for a possible reunion in the future.

A Cristiano Filippini által létrehozott Flames of Heaven projekt „The Force Within” c. korongja 2020 végének egyik kimagasló albuma szimfonikus power metal stílusban. A Limb Music kiadványán az olasz metalban ismert zenészek alkalmi csapata hallható. A banda felállása a lemezen: Michele Vioni – gitár, Marco Pastorino – ének, Cristiano Filippini – gitár és billentyűk, hangszerelés és zenekari betétek, Giorgio Terenziani – basszus és Paolo Caridi – dobok. Cristiano Filippini ezen a lemezen hallható zenei elképzeléseit még 2018-ban kezdte megvalósítani, már akkor is epikus, nagy zenekari elemekkel ötvözve a dallamos metal stílust. Ennek az irányzatnak olasz földön persze addigra már jócskán akadtak képviselői, legalább két évtizede működnek a színtéren európai szinten is jól ismert, sőt világhíres bandák. Filippini tehetsége azonban kiemeli az alkotást a sorból. A korong nem minden előzmény nélküli. A szerzőnek korábbi, „The First Crusade” (2010), “Flames of Passion” (2011), a „The Best of Swords and Flames” (2015) címet viselő lemezei epikus rockoperaként láttak napvilágot az évtized első felében.

A Flames of Heaven The Force Within c. lemezéhez Filippini a mikrofon mögé Marco Pastorinot (Temperance) kérte fel, míg Franco Michelottit (Shining Fury) a gitáron való közreműködésre invitálta. Később csatlakozott az ötleteléshez Michele Vioni, szintén gitáron (Vivaldi Metal Project), általa pedig a dobok mögé ült Paolo Caridi (Geoff Tate’s Sweet Oblivion, David Ellefson, Michele Luppi, Hollow Haze) és végül Giorgio Terenziani (Arthemis) basszusgitáron. A billentyűkön két zenész is vendégszerepel, a korongon Alberto Sonzogni és Luca Zanon játéka hallható. Miután a zenei anyag jelentős részét két-három olasz stúdióban és Filippini saját laboratóriumában rögzítették, a keverést a Stratovarius gitárosi posztjáról ismert Matias Kupiainen végezte. A végső hangzás kialakítására a legendás Finnvox Studios-ban Mika Jussila (Nightwish, Stratovarius, stb.) vállalkozott. Mindezekből következik, hogy a lemez anyaga bármily’ kiválóan egységesen is zeng, nem egy steril stúdiótermék, hanem a korongon hallható zenei utazás megálmodójának, Cristiano Filippininek a zenei tehetségekkel közösen feljátszott kimagasló műve.

A borító (ld. kiemelt kép és alábbi linkek) szuggesztív frontján a stílus zsáner-elemeként kőből faragott/fémből öntött harcosok pihennek letámasztott kardjaik felett és egy temetőkertnek tűnő éjszakai tájkép, valójában egy jövőbeli éjszakai nagyváros felett állnak őrt. A városképen a folyókanyarulattal a háttérben Sanghai épületei, az előtérben pl. a moszkvai csavart felhőkarcoló állnak a világ sok egyéb ikonikus toronyépülete között. Egészen közel pedig két hifi-torony sziluettje csillog egy-egy toronyépületként, mintha a magasban egy ablakból néznénk ki a jövő égboltjára, tűzcsóvát húzó légi járműveket követve.

A korong külön erénye, hogy nem másolja a saját földrajzi, vagy közvetlen zenei környezetének alkotásait, és a Stratovarius-kapcsolat ellenére is távolabb áll a szimfonikus power metalban annak zeneiségétől. A szimfonikus sávok alatt inkább szól úgy, mint egy dögösre kevert svéd dallamos HM-zenekar (Treat, Last Autumn’s Dream). A vastag, nem uralkodó, de meghatározó billentyűszőnyegekkel a számomra melodikus HR/HM-ben etalonnak számító angol Magnumot, az énekdallamokkal egy újabb generáció képviselőjeként megjelent Tent (egészen pontosan Gary Hughest) idézi. Hangzásvilágában emellett a német happy/power metalt játszó Freedom Callal rokonítható. Ezen bandák dalaira jellemző részletgazdaságban tudunk elveszni, amikor a lelkesítő, pozitív üzenetű tételeket hallgatjuk. A billentyűk különböző (hol orgona, hol fanfárok) hangzásával, máskor üveghangú csilingeléssel, kamara-, illetve nagy zenekari betétekkel kísérik a briliáns gitárjátékot. Ez utóbbi torzításában külön megragadó a ’80-90-es évekbeli HM-zenékben megjelenő tremolós, visító-recsegő hangzás. Persze, halljuk Luca Turilli és Malmsteen, vagy a Narniából CJ Grimmark játékához hasonló lekerekített futamokat is.

A nagyívű introt (The Force Within) egy erős billentyűvel, majd a belsőt rázó basszus-dob játékával beinduló hitvallás-dal követi (We Fight For Eternity). A kellemes énekhang változatos hangszínekkel és hajlításokkal, akár a verzék alatt is három-négyszólamú kórusokkal végigkíséri az egész lemezt. Marco Pastorino fantasztikus dallamíveket képes énekelni és a lírai baritonjából oly’ könnyedén vált magas hangfekvésű hősies baritonba vagy akár hasításba, hogy azon csak ámulok. A dob-basszus vastag kettősével a dalok között a lüktető ütemű, már-már eurodiszkos alapra felépített, korunk finn-svéd dallamos metaljából (pl. a Beast in Black-től, Amaranth-tól) ismert tételek is hallhatók (Dying for Love, Against the Hellfire). A dübörgő power metal hangzásban a széles sávon hangszerelt heroikus zenekari betétek mellett megjelenik a zongora és a hegedű magányos dallama is (Always with You). Arra nóta emlékeztet, mint amikor a Nightwish a Hóember c. nagysikerű rajzfilm betétdalát játszotta lemezre.

A dalokban elmerülve rengeteg zenei ízt fedezhet fel a hallgató. Számos apró díszítést vagy az évtizedek metaljában eljátszott egyéb zenei motívumokat, amik szinte csak pillanatokra tűnnek fel. És ehhez nem is kell figyelmesen hallgatni a zenét, egyszerűen elég csak élvezni azt! Külön említést érdemel a Lightning in the Night megragadó kezdése, ahogy a Death Angelnek a The Ultra-Violence-ben fémes gitárhangzással játszott Tubular Bells-ét (Mike Oldfield) idézi (érdemes hát mindkettőt meghallgatni).

Ebben a dalban például szinte minden hallható, amitől olyan jó az epikus power stílus: a kórus után felgyorsuló dob, majd egy elementáris szóló karcolja a dobhártyát, kamarazenekari betéttel (meglehet, szintetizátorral). És amikor a dal forgó sodrásban véget ér, rövid szünet után ismét egy zongorajáték indul vonósokkal kísérve, rendkívül kifejező énekkel. Más nótákban pedig a sok elrejtett zenei poén egyikeként dallamos-zengő elektronikus effektek szólnak (Against the Hellfire), mint valami konzolos játékban. Hallhatók a tételek között igazán közönséget (de legalábbis CD-hallgatót) énekeltető dalok is, melyek refrénjét önkéntelenül dúdolja-mormolja az is, aki fejhallgatóval élvezi (The Angel and the Faith). Magával ragad, ahogy a dob váltogatja az ütemét és még a refrén végén is újabb szólók hasítanak.

A Flames of Heaven The Force Within-je igényesen kidolgozott, lendületes epikus-szimfonikus power metal dalaival 2020 egyik legjobb lemeze a stílusban! A szimfonikus-harangzúgásos outro után magától értetődő újrakezdeni.

Naisten vitosellla mentiin lujaa. LeKi:n Sanni Alatalo vetää kintereillään Hämeenlinnan Hiihtoseuran Anni Kainulainen.

Hakkarin kansallisissa vapaan tyylin tykkilumihiihdoissa lauantaina 2. joulukuuta 1 400 metrin latu oli hyvässä kunnossa. LeKi hiihdon kisoissa oli 165 hiihtäjää, lekiläisiä heistä lähes 30.

SM-tasolla kärkijoukkoon kuuluvat Hämeenlinnan Hiihtoseuran Maija Hakala ja nuorempi haastaja Anni Kainulainen olivat vetopäällä. Hakala voitti Kainulaisen puolella minuutilla. Ski Jyväskylän Emma Hämäläinen jäi puolestaan Kainulaisesta puolisen minuuttia.

LeKi:n Sanni Alatalo hiihti hyvin jääden kolmosesta vain 4,6 sekuntia. 20-vuotiaissa hallinnut Viialan Klaara Leponiemi olisi ollut yleisessä sarjassa viides. 5. heti Sanni Alatalon jälkeen.

Miesten kympillä vei odotetusti voiton Vantaan Hiihtoseuran Mikko Kuusela, mutta Pyhäjärven Pohdin Vilho Moilanen ahdisti seitsemän sekunnin erolla.

Kakkossijoja lankesi lekiläisille nuorille ja varttuneille miehille useampiakin. Ainoan sarjavoiton otti ensimmäistä kertaa LeKi:n väreissä kilpaillut M40:n Markus Välimäki, joka olisi ollut yleisessä sarjassa kolmonen.

Na noite calorosa de sexta, o palco do Carioca Clube, mais uma vez, cedeu espaço para o metal melódico de STRATOVARIUS.

E a casa estava lotada de fãs incrivelmente entusiasmados com a vinda dos finlandeses. O palco estava super clean e elegante, apenas com o logo da banda estampado.

Pontualmente às 22:30, som de abertura no palco. O primeiro a entrar é Rolf Pilve – bateria, seguido de seus companheiros de palco. Logo a galera escuta os primeiros acordes de “Eagleheart”. Nem preciso dizer que a turma debaixo do palco estava ensandecida, e cantou o refrão com o coração. Quando a estrela de Timo Kotipelto brilhou no palco, foram aplausos, assovios, gritos de alegria. É muito amor ein galera!

Mas o som não estava maravilhoso não, logo foi melhorado. Koti solta a garganta já logo de primeira, pra mostrar ao que veio nessa noite quente de sampa. Sem frescuras, engatam “Phoenix”, Koti salda o povo em português, dizendo: – “boa noite São Paulo, vocês estão bem?”. E engata na filha mais nova “Oblivion”.

A banda interagiu muito com o público, com muito carisma e muita alegria no palco. A galera respondia sempre aos pedidos de Koti, que pediu palmas, pulos, gritos, e ganhou tudo de todos que ali estavam. Realmente os fãs se superaram nessa noite.

Em “Shine in the Dark”, há uma pausa dramática, Porra – o baixista mais querido do metal melódico, vai ao centro do palco e pede ooooo da galera que responde em alto e bom tom. E seguem com “SOS”, onde Koti faz graça pois pega o celular e começa a filmar, pedindo para a galera participar, no final agradece a ajuda dos fãs. Koti aproveita e apresenta o guitar – Matias Kupiainen , que faz um belo solo antes de “4000 Rainy Nights”, e dão início a uma sequência de clássicos.

Logo vem o solo do Porra, eita baixista arretado. Há alguns anos atrás, ele descobriu o que seu nome significa no Brasil, e agora, faz piada de si mesmo no palco, divertido e brilhante essa fera. Foi um solo cheio de reviravoltas e muita técnica.

E, é claro, o sr. Johansson dos teclados  começa com um solo belíssimo, e finaliza com o teclado se tornando um cravo para delírio da galera, entoam a queridinha “Black Diamond”. E eles deixam o palco por alguns minutos. Retornando com a balada “Forever”, seguida de “The Kiss of Judas”, dando todas as últimas energias da noite, para fecharem com a chave mágica de “Hunting High and Low”, cantada por cada uma das vozes de dentro do carioca.

Foi uma apresentação irretocável, com um set bem balanceado, onde clássicos não faltaram e nem novidades. Koti estava empolgado demais e cheio de energia, mostrando toda sua performance tanto vocal como frontman, e não faltou espaço pra ninguém, todos solaram e tiveram sua oportunidade de brilhar nessa sexta. Inclusive os fãs que lá estavam, que temos que admitir, foram muito calorosos com os finlandeses.
