The Butler Street Poltergeist
On Butler Street in Springfield, Massachusetts in January 1959, 80 year old Mrs. Charles Papineau and her 13 year old grandson, Wayne, were terrified when the house’s windows suddenly started shattering without an apparent cause.
Both Mrs. Papineau and Wayne claimed to have heard odd thumping sounds just before windows were smashed to pieces. In a week, 39 windows were broken. The glazier who installed replacement panes told a reporter that the glass had all fallen inside the house. It appeared the windows were broken from the outside, as if the perpetrator had struck the middle of the panes with violent force.Despite a police investigation, no culprits or evidence of a crime were found.
Enter John C. Parker, an amateur expert on poltergeists. Parker, also an architect, offered to perform a scientific investigation of the phenomenon. He hoped to prove temperature changes hadn’t been responsible by installing a thermometer in the bathroom, where three windows in total had been broken by the unseen force. He also planned to install a strong plastic window in that room to prevent any further breakages.
Apart from frightening the nervous Mrs. Papineau, who suffered windows exploding right in front of her, the most affected victim appeared to be the insurance agent asked to process her claim for $93 in replacement glass. Without a cause other than poltergeist to list on the damage claim form, he had to call his head office for instructions.
The window breakages ended a little less than a week after they began. The responsible party was never positively identified. Speculation continues among students of psychic phenomenon, but it’s worth noting Mrs. Papineau herself didn’t believe in ghosts, and the results of Parker’s independent investigation of the events aren’t known.

About Blaire Oliveira's Family
-Xiaoyu Jiang: Blaire's maternal grandmother. She is estranged from the family because of her being rather strict when raising her daughters. Xiaoyu and her husband came to America in 1949 shortly after Mao Zedong becomes the leader of the then newly established People's Republic of China. She is 72 when Blaire's story begins. -Enyu Jiang: Blaire's paternal grandfather. Like his wife, he is estranged from the family due to being rather strict. Came to America with his wife in 1949, he is 73 when Blaire's story begins. -Yara and Thiago Oliveira: Blaire's paternal grandparents. They came to America in 1953 from São Paulo Brazil, where they settled in Boston Massachusetts. They are quite affectionate towards their grandchildren, especially when it comes to the granddaughters. -Lin Oliveira: Blaire's mother, she was born in 1955. She was born in New York City and moved to Worcester Massachusetts in 1977 for medical school. While working at Maine Medical Center in 1989, she met her husband Carlos and married him around the start of 1991. They have one biological child together, a girl named Bianca, and adopted Blaire at birth in 1994. Lin adopted Carlos' son from a previous relationship, Burton, when he was 7 years old. She is very relaxed when it comes to parenting, only being disappointed if they've done something wrong. According to Blaire, she is a great cook. -Carlos Oliveira: born in 1964, he works as a paramedic. He met Lin in 1989, when his son Burton was just a week old. The two married at the start of 1991 and have three children: Burton, Bianca, and Blaire. He finds it funny that all of the kids have names that start with the letter B. Always attempts to make Brazilian dishes and treats when he is able and is said to make very good Brigadeiro. -Burton Oliveira: Blaire's oldest sibling, he was born on October 13, 1989 and at the start of Blaire's series, he is an 8th grader at Sanford Junior High. He is a rather quiet teen, but he tends to open up a bit more when he's around someone he's quite familiar with. Gets along best with his sister Blaire, but he enjoys the company of his younger sister Bianca as well. Has some abandonment issues due to his mother leaving just days after his birth, which happened not long before his father met Lin. -Bianca Oliveira: Blaire's older sister, she was born on September 1st, 1992 and is a 6th grader at Willard School at the start of Blaire's series. Due to being of mixed heritage, she has larger eyes than an average Chinese person, although her skin is rather fair. She's quite tomboy-ish in personality, although she still enjoys feminine things like Barbie dolls. Sticks up for her little sister when she is needed. -Mei Hilton: Lin's younger sister, she was born in 1964. She works as a secretary at an insurance office. Has one biological child, a girl named Lucy who was born one day prior to Blaire's sister Bianca, and two stepchildren named Sam and Dorothy. Has very minimal contact with her parents, only talking to them rarely. Is quite patient with people to an extent, unless it's something racist about someone she cares about, her family, or herself. -Russell Hilton: Blaire's uncle, he works at the same insurance office as his wife, but as an agent. Has two children from his previous marriage, son Samuel (born 1989) and daughter Dorothy (born 1991.) He is the younger brother of pro wrestler Eric Hilton, but never brags about this fact. He met Blaire's aunt Mei in 1992 and married her in 1998. Tends to be quite patient, although he has his limits.

Auto Insurance in Weymouth and Quincy, MA for New Drivers: Essential Tips and Advice for First-Time Car Owners
When selecting an auto insurance policy, new drivers and first-time car owners face unique challenges. Navigating the world of auto insurance can be confusing. Still, with the right information, young drivers can secure auto insurance in Weymouth and Quincy, MA, that balances cost with comprehensive coverage. Here are some essential tips and advice for new drivers in these areas to make informed choices about their first auto insurance policy.
Understand Massachusetts Auto Insurance Requirements
Massachusetts law requires that all drivers carry a minimum amount of auto insurance, which includes:
Bodily Injury Liability: Covers injuries to others if the car's owner is at fault in an accident.
Property Damage Liability: Covers damage to other people's property, with a minimum of $5,000.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This policy covers medical expenses for the driver and passengers, regardless of fault, with a minimum of $8,000.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Covers the driver's injuries if the other driver is uninsured or underinsured, with $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident required.
These minimum requirements provide basic protection, but many drivers go for higher coverage limits for greater financial security. It's worth discussing the options with an insurance agent to understand what additional coverage might be beneficial, especially in urban areas like Quincy, where traffic density increases accident risk.
Shop Around and Compare Quotes
Insurance premiums can vary significantly from one company to another, especially for young or inexperienced drivers. Requesting quotes from multiple providers allows one to compare costs and find the best deal. Look for an insurer with a good reputation for handling claims reasonably and efficiently—some companies may offer lower premiums but may not have the best customer service or claims support.
Consider consulting an insurance agent who can compare policies from different providers and help new drivers in Weymouth and Quincy find the best coverage options within their budget.
Take Advantage of Discounts for Young Drivers
Many insurance companies offer discounts that can help lower the cost of auto insurance for new drivers:
Good Student Discounts: Insurers often offer discounts to students who maintain a high GPA, as studies show a correlation between academic success and safe driving habits.
Driver's Education Courses: Completing a state-approved driver's education course can make the car owner a safer driver and earn them a discount on auto insurance in Weymouth and Quincy, MA.
Bundling Policies: If the car owner or any family members have home insurance, bundling it with auto insurance can lead to significant savings.
Telematics Programs: Many insurers offer discounts to new drivers who participate in telematics programs. These programs monitor driving behaviors via a mobile app or device installed in the vehicle. These programs reward safe driving habits, such as smooth acceleration, gentle braking, and adherence to speed limits.
Consider Raising the Deductible
Choosing a higher deductible is an effective way to lower the monthly premium for new drivers. It is, however, required to remember that a higher deductible means that the car owner will pay more out-of-pocket if involved in an accident. If, as the car owner, one is confident in their driving skills and plans to drive carefully, this can be a smart way to save money on the premiums. Just ensure enough savings to cover the deductible in case of an accident.
Evaluate the Importance of Comprehensive and Collision Coverage
While liability insurance is mandatory in Massachusetts, comprehensive and collision coverage are optional. These coverages can benefit new drivers with a financed or new vehicle, as they protect against damages to the vehicle due to accidents, theft, or weather events. Comprehensive coverage is beneficial in Weymouth and Quincy, where the risk of severe weather or theft could be a factor. If the car is older and its replacement value is low, one may skip these coverages to reduce the premiums.
Stay Safe to Avoid High-Risk Penalties
New drivers must avoid traffic violations and accidents. Insurance companies typically charge higher premiums for drivers deemed high-risk due to speeding tickets, accidents, or other violations. New drivers can keep their insurance premiums affordable by practicing safe driving habits. In urban settings like Quincy, this can mean paying extra attention to pedestrian crossings, speed limits, and other high-traffic areas.
Reassess the Policy Annually
Insurance needs can change over time, so reviewing the policy annually is wise. As new drivers gain experience, they may qualify for lower rates. Life changes, such as moving, getting married, or switching jobs, can also impact insurance needs and premiums. Checking with the insurer each year ensures that the owner is getting the best rates and that the coverage still meets the needs.
Therefore, with careful planning and regular policy reviews, young drivers can secure quality coverage that protects them on the road while fitting within their budget.

Art Klaudt: Attending the aftermath of a riot and watching people pour water over an incinerated bus
Anonymous 1: failing to graduate college
ava: going back to school for the first time in 5 years, the first thing i’ve done in public besides doctor’s appointments since covid began
kate: In May I finally bought a car. I've lived in Boston for the last 7 years without one. It was a horrendous ordeal where we had a simple plan to go to a local dealer and buy a shitty 2007 Toyota but at the last minute my partner's uncle stepped in and told us to go to his guy in another state. We went there, met the mechanics, and ended up buying a salvaged car 10 years newer for the same price. Because it was out of state though, we had to pay and do the bill of sale and title and everything by mail, then figure out how to get it registered in Massachusetts, get car insurance, get the RMV form signed by an insurance agent, pick up the plates, pay taxes, etc etc. About a month after buying the darn thing we finally ubered down to the place and picked up the car. I took a picture and sent it to my family with the caption "MY CARRRRRRRR". I found out later that at that moment, my mom and dad had been in an accident while driving my old car back home in Texas. When they saw my text, they turned to each other and said "how did she know???"
Anonymous 2: coming back to my car to see that id been robbed, noticing a bag that belonged to me a few feet away on the ground and sprinting the rest of the distance to make sure the car was still there, seeing the broken glass all over the back seat. it was incredibly hot that day
Lucas: Getting out of prison, doing college
Anonymous 3: I was sitting outside the chicken house on the bench by the kiwifruit tree, in the last part of winter or the very first part of spring, crying in a way which felt like my tears were coming out of my eyes like hot water from a hose turned on low. it was in the afternoon in the rest period after lunch but it was very overcast so it felt dark. i kind of wanted someone to come by and see i was crying so much and talk to me about it, but no-one did. i stopped crying after a while but stayed on the bench and shortly afterwards Clément came past and we talked about something normal. either he couldn't tell i'd been crying or he chose to not mention it. the fact that i cried so much and so earnestly (about not wanting to leave the place i was, and wanting to always live there but feeling that to be impossible), made me feel a warm glow of certainty about the direction of my future life.
Anonymous 4: Working 7 days a week upwards of 60 hours
Anonymous 5: On a phone call with a friend; Struggling to describe my mixed emotions over my ex having a pointed emotional breakdown that precluded my being celebratory over the Gregorian new year
superswag: new years day
v0w0v: Moving back home to my parent's house after a particularly bad assault and the subsequent re-awakening.
The first month felt like a dream because I hadn't been around other people regularly or outside near the open sky for a long, long time. I remember staying up all night on one of my first nights back and being shocked that there were so many birds singing in the morning. I remember thinking "I'll never take this for granted again". Trying to hold on to that feeling.
Anonymous 6: Crying listening to Elliott Smith while smoking a cigarette on a balcony readily preparing to jump and deciding that I wouldn't and am worthy of life
Anonymous 7: i hit two birds with my train today, between wellard and rockingham stations.
binnie: Getting married with the love of my life... I visited the beautiful Aotearoa
Anonymous 8: My breakup with my girlfriend of 3 years
April M. Mildew: The first winter of the year. My chest is shaking. I think it's from fear but it might have just been that I was cold. Or it was both. I remembered that I will die. I don't want to die. I want to keep my memories. I don't want my memories to go away. I don't want to lose the people I love. I don't want it all to go away. They've just finished remodeling the bathroom. Now it is the death bathroom. Just like how my childhood blanket became a death blanket. I am trying to grasp onto something that will make me feel okay. I am singing half remembered lyrics to ABBA's The Winner Takes It All in the shower. This memory might actually be from 2023. I am not sure.

Choosing the Best General Contractor in Natick: A Practical Guide
When embarking on a renovation or new construction project in Natick, Massachusetts, selecting the right general contractor is crucial for a successful outcome. Known for its blend of suburban charm and modern amenities, General Contractor in Natick presents a unique set of considerations for homeowners and contractors alike. This guide will help you navigate the process of finding and hiring a general contractor who can turn your vision into reality.
1. The Role of a General Contractor
A general contractor (GC) is responsible for managing all aspects of a construction project. This includes hiring and overseeing subcontractors, scheduling inspections, securing necessary permits, and ensuring that the project stays within budget and on time. Essentially, the GC acts as the project’s central coordinator, ensuring that all elements come together efficiently.
2. Getting Started: Research and Recommendations
Start by gathering recommendations from people you trust. Friends, family, and neighbors who have undertaken similar projects can provide valuable insights into their experiences with local contractors.
Online platforms like Yelp, Google Reviews, and Angie’s List can also offer reviews and ratings. In Natick, you might also check with local organizations such as the Natick Chamber of Commerce or local real estate agents who often have connections with reputable contractors.
3. Checking Credentials
Before committing to a contractor, ensure they meet the following criteria:
Licensing and Insurance: Verify that the contractor holds a valid Massachusetts contractor’s license. They should also have adequate insurance coverage, including liability insurance and worker’s compensation, to protect you from potential legal issues.
Experience: Look for a contractor with substantial experience in projects similar to yours. Whether it's a kitchen renovation, bathroom remodel, or new home build, relevant experience is crucial for achieving high-quality results.
4. Interviewing Contractors
Once you’ve narrowed down your list, arrange interviews with each contractor. During these meetings, consider asking:
Can you provide references from past clients?
What is your approach to project management and communication?
How do you handle unexpected issues or changes during the project?
What is the estimated timeline and budget for this project?
Their responses will help you gauge their professionalism, reliability, and compatibility with your project.
5. Reviewing Contracts
Before signing any agreement, carefully review the contract. It should include:
Scope of Work: A detailed description of the tasks to be completed.
Timeline: Specific start and completion dates, including key milestones.
Payment Schedule: Clear breakdown of costs and payment terms.
Warranties: Information on warranties for both the work performed and the materials used.
Ensure that all terms and conditions are clearly outlined and understood by both parties.
6. Effective Communication
Maintaining open and honest communication with your contractor is essential. Regular updates and check-ins will help you stay informed about the project’s progress and address any concerns promptly.
7. Final Inspection
Upon completion of the project, conduct a final walk-through with your contractor. This allows you to inspect the work and ensure it meets your expectations and contractual requirements. Address any issues before making the final payment.
Conclusion
Choosing the right general contractor in Natick is a critical step in ensuring the success of your construction or renovation project. By conducting thorough research, verifying credentials, and maintaining clear communication, you can find a contractor who will deliver high-quality results and bring your vision to life. Whether you’re updating a historic home or building a new space, a reliable contractor will help make the process smooth and satisfying.

Unlocking Better Quotes and Coverage Options: Your Path to Smart Insurance Choices
When it comes to insurance, whether for your home, vehicle, or business, finding the right coverage at the right price can often feel daunting.
However, with a little knowledge and the right approach, you can secure better quotes and tailor coverage options that meet your specific needs. In this blog post, we’ll explore key strategies to help you navigate the insurance landscape effectively.
1. Understand Your Insurance Needs
Before seeking quotes, take time to assess your specific insurance needs. Consider the following aspects:
- **Type of Coverage:** Identify the types of insurance you need, whether it’s auto, homeowners, renters, or business insurance.
- **Value of Assets:** Evaluate the value of your possessions and assets. Knowing how much coverage you require will help you avoid being underinsured.
- **Risk Tolerance:** Determine your comfort level with risk. This will influence your choice of deductibles and coverage limits.
### 2. Shop Around for Quotes
One of the most effective ways to secure better insurance quotes is to compare offerings from multiple providers. Here are some tips:
- **Use Online Comparison Tools:** Leverage online insurance comparison websites to quickly gather quotes from various companies. These platforms allow you to input your information and receive multiple quotes, making it easier to identify the best rates.
- **Consider Local Agents:** While online tools are convenient, local insurance agents can offer personalized service and insights specific to your area. They can help you find discounts and tailor policies that best suit your needs.
### 3. Assess Coverage Options and Discounts
Different insurers may offer various coverage options and discounts that can significantly lower your premiums. Here are some ways to maximize your savings:
- **Bundle Policies:** Many insurance companies offer discounts when you bundle multiple policies, such as home and auto insurance. This not only saves you money but also simplifies management by having a single provider.
- **Look for Specialized Discounts:** Explore discounts for safe driving, good credit scores, home security systems, and claims-free histories. Understanding what discounts are available can lead you to significant savings.
- **Evaluate Coverage Types:** Depending on your circumstances, you might consider adjusting your coverage types. For example, opting for a higher deductible could lower your premium but requires careful consideration of your financial situation.
### 4. Review Your Policies Regularly
Insurance needs can change over time due to life events such as marriage, buying a new home, or starting a business. Regularly reviewing your policies ensures that you have adequate coverage and are not overpaying. Here’s what to do:
- **Annual Policy Review:** Set a reminder to review your insurance policies annually. Evaluate your coverage against your current needs and market rates.
- **Communicate with Your Agent:** Engage with your insurance agent to discuss any changes in your life that may impact your coverage requirements. They can offer tailored advice and suggest adjustments.
### 5. Read the Fine Print
Ensure you understand the terms and conditions of any insurance policy before signing. Pay attention to:
- **Exclusions:** Be aware of what is not covered under your policy. This knowledge can prevent unpleasant surprises during the claims process.
- **Limits on Coverage:** Understand the coverage limits and deductibles associated with your policy. Choose limits that protect you adequately without causing financial strain.
Article Conclusion
Finding better quotes and coverage options doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. By understanding your insurance needs, shopping around for quotes, leveraging discounts, and regularly reviewing your policies, you can secure comprehensive coverage that fits your budget. Empower yourself with the right information, and take control of your insurance journey today!

Navigating the Maze of Long-Term Care Insurance Market
Hey there, curious minds! Today, let’s embark on a journey into the riveting world of long-term care insurance. Buckle up because we’re about to explore the ins and outs of a market that’s growing faster than a cat video goes viral.
The Numbers Game:
So, according to the not-so-boring report I stumbled upon (Report ID: SQMIG40M2001, because who doesn’t love a good ID), the global Long-Term Care Insurance Market was a whopping USD 18.88 billion in 2021. Hold your breath, because by 2030, it’s predicted to hit USD 53.21 billion. That’s a growth rate of 12.3%, folks! Move over, Bitcoin.
The Who’s Who in the Market:
Now, let’s talk about the players in this insurance circus. We’ve got the usual suspects — Genworth, John Hancock, Aviva, Allianz, and more. It’s like a superhero lineup, but instead of capes, they wear business suits.
Segmentation Shenanigans:
The report dives into segments like a kid into a ball pit. We’ve got types — traditional and hybrid (not the car, sadly), applications — between 18 and 64 or over 65 (because apparently, age matters), payers — out-of-pocket and public (cue dramatic music), and services — nursing care and home healthcare. It’s like choosing toppings for your pizza, but with a bit more financial weight.
Service Smackdown:
In 2022, nursing care took the crown, claiming the largest revenue share at 32.3%. Apparently, the elderly have a soft spot for specialized care. Home healthcare is also on the rise — because who wouldn’t want care delivered to their doorstep like a pizza?
Paying the Piper:
Public funding flexed its muscles, claiming 63.5% of the revenue share in 2022. Meanwhile, out-of-pocket expenses played their part but are expected to take a back seat in the future. Maybe they need a better agent.
Global Adventures:
North America wore the crown in 2022, securing the largest share at 49.3%. Meanwhile, the Asia Pacific region is all about family support. In Thailand, a whopping 90% of elderly individuals receive care from family members. Talk about keeping it in the family.
For More Information: https://www.skyquestt.com/report/long-term-care-insurance-market
Driving Forces and Roadblocks:
The report talks about increasing awareness surrounding facilities (because apparently, some people didn’t know they needed care) and the rising costs of insurance, which is putting a dent in everyone’s piggy bank. It’s like wanting a fancy car but realizing you can only afford a bicycle.
Competitive Comedy:
The market is a dynamic battlefield with well-established brands, emerging players, and niche producers. It’s like a potluck dinner, but instead of dishes, they bring innovations.
Wrap-Up Wisdom:
So, there you have it — the not-so-dry rundown of the long-term care insurance market. Aging populations, rising awareness, and a sprinkle of financial strains — it’s like a soap opera, but with insurance policies.
Remember, folks, the next time someone mentions long-term care insurance at a dinner party, you can impress them with your newfound knowledge. Because who wouldn’t want to be the life of the party, armed with insurance trivia?
Until next time, stay insured and keep it sassy!

Comprehensive vs. Collision Auto Insurance
Collision and comprehensive car insurance are two types of physical damage coverage protecting your vehicle. Collision coverage helps repair your car from traffic accident damages. Comprehensive coverage pays losses from non-collision incidents like fires or theft.
While both coverage types of auto insurance can cover the same vehicle, the protections differ, with more specific differences between states and insurance companies.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Collision and comprehensive car insurance can cover the same vehicle, but in different ways.
Collision insurance covers damage done to your car when you have a collision with another car or an object like a fence.
Comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by events such as natural disasters, fires, or theft.
Lenders may require both comprehensive and collision insurance, although neither is required by state law.
Comparing Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance
Comprehensive and collision auto insurance can cover the same vehicle, but they offer different protections. Here’s how they compare. Collision Comprehensive Covers Collision with another car, an object such as a building, fence, or guardrail, and single-car accidents Damage caused by animals, falling objects, fire, natural disasters, vandalism, and theft Required Not required by state law, but may be required by your lender or leasing agent Not required by state law, but may be required by your lender Cost Typically higher Typically lower Deductible Yes; typically, higher amounts offered Yes; typically, lower amounts offered
Collision Auto Insurance
Collision car insurance covers your vehicle’s damage repairs caused by:
An accident or contact with another vehicle
A collision with a building, guardrail, person, rock, tree, or wildlife
Damage from a rollover
Car damage caused by an uninsured driver, potentially
If one of the above occurs, this coverage type pays to repair your car, even when you’re at fault for an accident. However, ask your insurer for details. In most cases, comprehensive coverage is the coverage type that covers animal collisions, including hitting a deer.
Collision auto insurance doesn’t cover damage you cause to someone else’s property or any injuries to you or your passengers.1
Note
In a few states, such as Massachusetts and Michigan, limited collision coverage is a cheaper collision coverage type that only pays if you’re less than 50% at fault.23
Cost of Collision Auto Insurance
National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) data shows that U.S. drivers paid an average annual collision premium of $370.73 in 2020. However, costs can vary by location. For instance, that same year, California drivers paid the most, with an average premium of $501.64 per year, while Wisconsin motorists paid the least, with an average of $244.82.4
Costs may depend on:
Value of the vehicle: Higher-priced or luxury cars generally cost more to insure, as they’ll also cost more to repair.
Repair cost: The general, historical cost to repair the car
Crash damages: The type of damage your particular car often incurs in a crash5
Collision Deductibles
A deductible is an amount you pay toward repairs before your insurance begins paying for any remaining repairs (up to the actual cash value of your car). You can choose your deductible when buying collision coverage. It’s offered in various options such as $200, $500, $1,000, or more.
A higher deductible lowers the amount of your overall insurance premium, but you’ll have to pay more out of pocket if you have an accident.6
Comprehensive Auto Insurance
Comprehensive auto insurance covers repairing non-collision damages and losses, even if you’re at fault somehow. Comprehensive coverage can help pay the cost of repairing damages caused by factors like:
Civil disturbances such as riots
Falling objects
Fire
Floods
Hailstorms
Hurricanes
Tornadoes
Vandalism
Windstorms
Comprehensive is also the coverage type to pay repair costs for your windshield and other car glass.7
Cost of Comprehensive Auto Insurance
Generally, comprehensive coverage is less expensive than collision insurance. Nationwide, in 2020, automobile owners paid an average of $174.26 for comprehensive auto insurance, according to the NAIC. Costs vary by location. California drivers paid the least, at an average of $97.26 annually for comprehensive coverage, while South Dakota motorists paid the most: an average of $353.10.8
Factors that could lead to higher comprehensive premium rates include:
Car and repair costs: Repair costs for your vehicle’s make and model
Car theft: How often a particular car is stolen, or the rate of auto thefts in your location5
Weather events: If you live in a region prone to severe weather, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, you may pay more.
Comprehensive Deductibles
In general, comprehensive deductibles are provided in lower amounts compared to collision deductibles, starting at $100.9
Comprehensive car insurance typically covers glass and windshield damage. An insurer may offer glass coverage with or without a deductible. Choosing no deductible will help you avoid out-of-pocket costs but will increase your comprehensive premium. Some states, such as Kentucky, require zero-deductible glass damage coverage if you carry comprehensive insurance.10
Key Differences Between Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance
Coverage
If your car is damaged in a road collision with another car or object and you’re at fault, only your collision coverage can help pay to repair it. Only comprehensive coverage covers losses caused by contact with animals, civil disturbances, fires, natural disasters, theft, and vandalism.
Your personal collision and comprehensive coverages may include rental car damages while you’re on vacation.11 Check with your car insurance agent for details and to ensure that coverage is extended to rentals. Remember that:
You’ll still need to pay the deductible.
Any claims may raise your premium.
All expenses may not be covered—such as loss of income for the rental agency.
Some insurers may not extend physical damage coverage for certain difficult-to-insure cars, whether due to high theft rates or repair and replacement costs.5 Or, you may need to have a high deductible of $1,000 or more.
For other types of situations, neither collision nor comprehensive coverage would apply. Here are the types of auto insurance policies that would cover other situations:SituationInsurance coverageMedical expenses for you or your passengers Personal injury protection (PIP), medical, or your health insurance policyOther auto’s driver or passenger medical expensesBodily liability The difference between your collision payment and the amount owed on a new vehicleGap insuranceCar rental while repairs are performedAuto rental coverageMechanical breakdownsMechanical breakdown insuranceGeneral wear and tear and maintenance costsNo coverage available—pay out of pocketTheft of items from your carPossibly homeowners or renters’ policy
Required
State laws do not require drivers to buy collision and comprehensive car insurance coverages. But when you borrow money to buy or lease a car, the lender or leasing company will likely require you to carry both types of protections.7 If you don’t purchase these policies, the lender may buy them for you and charge you for it, also known as force-placed insurance.
Depending on your state and insurer, the insurer may drop your collision and comprehensive coverage if you have an excessive claim history or only specific claim types, taking into account both at-fault and not-at-fault claims.
Costs
Typically, collision car insurance costs more than comprehensive coverage.12 The cost of both types of coverage can depend on factors such as your location and the type of vehicle you drive.
Your premiums may increase if you have had frequent or high-value claims. You may more often see premiums increase where you were at fault for collisions vs. not-at-fault comprehensive. Increased premiums may depend on state laws and insurance companies.
NOTE
For example, in Texas, an insurer can raise your premium if you have three claims over 36 months for damage from flying gravel or other flying or falling objects, which fall under comprehensive coverage.13
Deductibles
Typically, collision and comprehensive coverages have separate deductibles, and you can choose different amounts for each deductible. Comprehensive coverage deductibles are typically offered in lower amounts than for collision coverage.
Some states set minimums for deductibles. In New York, insurers must charge at least a $50 deductible for comprehensive and $100 for collision, but a $0 deductible is allowed for glass damages.14
When it’s claim time, you pay separate deductibles for each incident. If you’re in a fender bender in the morning, and a tree falls on your car in the afternoon, you’ll be charged two separate deductibles—one for collision and one for comprehensive.
Is Collision or Comprehensive Car Insurance Better?
If you finance or lease a car, you’ll have to carry both collision and comprehensive coverage until you pay off the loan or the lease ends.
If you own a vehicle outright, you may not need either coverage. However, figure out how much you can afford to spend out of pocket if you total your automobile, if it’s stolen, or if it sustains natural disaster damage. If you have an older car with a low market value, carrying collision or comprehensive coverages might not make financial sense.
Suppose you just paid off your car loan and your automobile still has a $15,000 market value. Depending on the cost of your insurance premium, it might make financial sense to continue carrying collision and comprehensive coverages. But, if your vehicle has a market value of less than $3,000, you can likely drop both coverages.15
Do You Need Both Comprehensive and Collision Auto Insurance?
Car leasing companies and lenders require lessors and borrowers to carry collision and comprehensive car insurance coverages. If you own your vehicle outright, you might consider discontinuing collision, comprehensive, or both coverages. However, remember that if you drop collision and comprehensive coverages, you’ll have to use your own funds to pay for losses. Generally, it makes good financial sense to drop both coverages when your car’s market value dips below about $3,000.15
Does Comprehensive Mean Full Coverage?
No. Lenders and auto leasing companies typically require customers to buy a full-coverage car insurance policy. “Full coverage” is not an actual policy type. It typically refers to an auto insurance policy that includes all legally required coverages, like bodily injury and property damage liability, plus collision and comprehensive coverages.
What Is Third-Party Insurance?
You file a third-party insurance claim when you think the accident was the other driver’s fault, and you file a claim with their insurance company. If the insurance company agrees and pays your claim, you do not pay a deductible for any car repairs. If you first file a claim with your company under collision coverage and pay the deductible, your company may be able to refund the deductible to you later.16
Is It Better to Have a High or a Low Deductible?
Choosing a high deductible can lower your premium, but it requires you to pay more out of pocket if you need to file a claim. Car owners who can afford to pay for losses using their funds may choose a high deductible. Sometimes, your insurer may require a higher deductible if you have an excessive claim history.
On the other hand, a low deductible can help you avoid high out-of-pocket costs following an accident but will require you to pay a higher premium. Drivers with limited savings may benefit from paying a higher premium, with the assurance that their policy will cover higher losses.
The Bottom Line
Collision and comprehensive auto insurance coverages provide valuable protections. If you drive an expensive vehicle, consider carrying both types of coverage to protect your assets in the event of a major loss. However, not all drivers need collision or comprehensive coverage. If you’ve paid off your car loan and your automobile has little market value, carrying these protections is probably not cost-effective.
Also, consider your risk level. You might not need collision and comprehensive auto insurance if you own your vehicle and only drive it occasionally. But, if you live in a location with high auto theft or traffic accident rates, the extra protection might be valuable in the long run.

Uncle Rob and the hotel business [part 4]
Continued from part 3
The same article described him as "well known in hotel circles throughout the United States, having managed hotels in the Middle West" and as "past President of the Ohio Hotels Association" along with ten years as General Manager of the Grand Hotel (since Mar 1, 1918).
By 1929, the following year he was still the hotel's proprietor. [11] And the year after that, this did not change, as indicated in specific records within the city directory:
Page 715 of the Cincinnati 1930-1931 Directory, courtesy of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
One of those records even listed his adopted son, Bert, who was then an insurance agent in Cheviot:
Page 1223 of the Cincinnati 1930-1931 Directory, yellow arrows that I added to this image for descriptive purposes, point to Rob (R B) and Bert ("Robt")
Additionally, he was part of the automobile association in the state of Ohio. In 1932, it was announced that the Grand Hotel would be closing their doors, with one publication saying that "this is sad news for B & O employees who have enjoyed the hospitality of R.B. Mills for many years," saying that he was "always anxious to please the railroad men and on many occasions went out of his way to make us feel comfortable." [12] By June 1934, he was described by the same magazine as "manager of the Hotel Sinton-St. Nicholas." That is where this image fits in, proving this as correct:

This post was originally published on WordPress in May 2019.
Other articles in various publications, through the 1930s, further confirmed he was a manager of the Hotel Sinton. [13] By 1944, he was still one of the officers of the Cincinnati Realty Company which was incorporated in 1905 to operate and construct the Hotel Sinton. [14] Finally, in 1953, he was still listed as the president of the Grand Hotel. I'll end with what text from my previous post:
On June 18, 1950, RBM I died of coronary heart disease in Heath, Massachusetts. The Cincinnati Enquirer would say he managed the “Sterling Hotel, Grand Hotel…Hotels Gibson and Sinton,” calling him a “prominent figure in Cincinnati hotel circles for 40 years,” with Hattie dying one year before. He was a member of Syrian Temple Shrine, Christ Episcopal Church, founding member of the Cincinnati Auto Club, and active in Chamber of Commerce of Cincinnati. He was buried, like Hattie, in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
