Who is Diablo Cody?

Diablo Cody’s path to screenwriting was far from traditional, and her background is precisely what makes her films stand out. Though her colorful past has led to some (unwarranted) criticism in the film world, her unique perspective has, more than anything, radicalized her and allowed her to adopt a strong feminist stance in her writing.

Hailing from the Midwest, Cody (whose real name is Brook Busey) graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in media and joined the workforce doing menial labor as a secretary. Obviously, this kind of life did not fulfill the eccentric Cody, so she supplemented it by writing blogs like The Red Secretary, the fictional diary of a Belarusian secretary, and Girls, Cars and Surfing, a page dedicated to the Beach Boys. Having become fed up with secretary work and her blogs not gaining any traction, Diablo Cody quit her job and decided to try out stripping, writing about her experiences in a new blog titled The Pussy Ranch. Viewership soared, so much so that Hollywood manager Mason Novick reached out to her and landed her a book deal. In 2005, she wrote her memoir Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper and shifted her focus to screenwriting soon after.

Having long retired from stripping, Cody reflects on that part of her life with mixed feelings. Though she doesn’t condemn strip clubs entirely (she still goes every now and then), she refers to them as “gross places. They're little shame terrariums." Thus Cody has pledged to write narratives with unabashed female protagonists, the most notable being her Oscar-winning feature film debut Juno (2007) about a high schooler who gets pregnant and puts the baby up for adoption. Juno set the precedent for Cody’s screenwriting career, and though the bar was very high, and although Diablo Cody hasn’t received any Academy Award nominations since, her iconic filmography nonetheless affords a valuable perspective to the canon of subversive feminist cinema.

‘The Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert Producing Adaptation Of Children’s Horror-Fantasy ‘Nightbooks’.

It’s been announced that an adaptation of author J.A. White‘s children’s horror-fantasy Nightbooks is coming to Netflix.

The adaptation comes from The Evil Dead writer, director, and executive producer Sam Raimi and executive producer Rob Tapert, and it is being written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (The Curse of La Llorona, Five Feet Apart).

Here’s a brief logline for Netflix’s adaptation:

When Alex, a boy obsessed with scary stories, is trapped by a witch in her modern, magical New York City apartment, his original hair-raising tales are the only thing keeping him safe as he desperately tries to find a way out of this twisted place.

And here’s a lengthier description of White’s book from Amazon:

A boy is imprisoned by a witch and must tell her a new scary story each night to stay alive. This thrilling contemporary fantasy from J. A. White, the acclaimed author of the Thickety series, brings to life the magic and craft of storytelling.

Alex’s original hair-raising tales are the only thing keeping the witch Natacha happy, but soon he’ll run out of pages to read from and be trapped forever. He’s loved scary stories his whole life, and he knows most don’t have a happily ever after. Now that Alex is trapped in a true terrifying tale, he’s desperate for a different ending—and a way out of this twisted place.

This modern spin on the Scheherazade story is perfect for fans of Coraline and A Tale Dark and Grimm. With interwoven tips on writing with suspense, adding in plot twists, hooks, interior logic, and dealing with writer’s block, this is the ideal book for budding writers and all readers of delightfully just-dark-enough tales.
