As someone who knows apparently a lot about the media spectacle around Charla Nash's attack. One of the things that happened was that her pre surgery face was shown on the Oprah Winfrey show. Oprah's interview is largely commended. But the fact remains that her face became a shock image. People would clip that part so you could skip the humanity element and just see her "weird gross face".
In Nope Mary Jo's face is kept behind a veil. We only get a "good look" at her face when JJ starts rolling in. The main "face" we see is of herself pre attack displayed prominently on her sweatshirt. A reminder that she not only didn't always look like she does now, but was previously considered Beautiful by Hollywood standards.
She was obviously not just a child actress but also probably among the first generation of "tween stars". Which meant that there was A LOT of focus on her looks at an age where kids are generally very vulnerable about their appearance. To go from being one of The Pretty People in the country if not the world to "hideously disfigured" was probably just as psychologically damaging as the attack itself.
Nope did a great job of NOT using Mary Jo's face for shock value, you saw little glimpses of the reality behind the veil, then the feeding started and the veil lifted and suddenly the truth was undeniable.
There's also a meta element of how we as the audience are likely to spend every shot on her ignoring the sweatshirt and desperately trying to peak at her face Now. We know it's wrong, but we still want to know. Her entire appearance is a metaphor for how the public treats retired child stars. We see her and are mainly shown her child self, but there are glimpses that remind you she's no longer that child.

Your Welcome! ☺️
Yeah- I’m not sure I take the full article as canon canon (like, yes I know it was made by Jordan Peele But I more take it as an optional extension of canon. Especially since it’s more on an alternate version where Gordy’s Home exists without JJ being a thing— but I digress) but it’s so interesting! There’s little details in it everywhere and the entire concept is fascinating.
👀 do you happen to have a way that i can read the fangoria article? Can't seem to find my hands on it :/
A friend shared these pictures with me. Unfortunately I don’t own the article myself :/
#and if Phyllis was alive— if she survived all that. went home. and lived#would one day she be sitting in her home- doing a mundane task and look up to the television when she hears a familiar name#her attention is caught. and she quickly realizes like when most people are in breaking news it’s not for any good reason.#Ricky Park has gone missing as has his family.#It’s sad. She hasn’t spoken to him in awhile. She turns off the television. She doesn’t try to dwell on it#A week later she hears about a new species discovered. She see’s now news articles on the terrible tragedy of the Star Lasso Incident#She learns Mary Jo Elliot was there. She was invited#Then. The icing on the cake. She finds an email that accidentally got stuck into junk#‘Hey. it’s last minute- a little more then a week away- but I wanted to invite you to Jupiter’s Claim’#There’s more to the message but she doesn’t read it

Hi! I was wondering if you have wlw recs more in the NA category? Or maybe old YA books
I’m 23 and reading some of the newer releases of YA seem too juvenile for me so I’m looking for books with MC & LI around the same age as me too
The thing is every time I think I found one the MC is paired with an older woman, I do not like age gaps anything more than a 4 years old gap is an automatic no for me
I’m also not a big fan of fantasy/magic themed books
Thank you and I’m sorry I know I’m a bit picky
Yep, I gotcha! Try these:
Out On Good Behavior by Dahlia Adler – P (Amz)
Chord by Chelsea M. Cameron
The Belle vs. the BDOC by Amy Jo Cousins
Take Them By Storm by Marie Landry
The IHOP Papers by Ali Liebegott (19)
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
Take Me Home by Lorelie Brown
The Good Girls by Teresa Mummert – B
Looking for a Complication by Tamsen Parker
Black Iris by Elliot Wake w/a Leah Raeder (Amz)
Exception to the Rule by Cindy Rizzo
Catch and Cradle by Katia Rose
The Devil Wears Tartan by Katia Rose
F*ths by G.L. Thomas – B
Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon (Amz)
Hairpin Curves by Elia Winters
Vow of Celibacy by Erin Judge
Body Grammar by Jules Ohman

15 + 4 from the childhood ask game for any MC applicable <333
thank you 💐
Ask list here!
Details below the cut!
4. How was your muse's relationship with their childhood guardians? Has it changed over time, and if so, how? Do they keep in touch?
Evie and her dad Scott (HSS:OG) have had a very healthy and positive relationship. There were of course some disagreements and confusions, but they were easy to manage and Evie rarely if ever felt like Scott was being hurtful. Evie did sometimes still struggle to communicate about things to him, but they'd generally be able to work things out.
Jo's parents (ILITW) were generally good to her and supportive of her, especially after Jane died, but she did start to grow apart from them as she got older and became more "I need to be able to fend for myself" minded. It was a little strange for them to get used to, but it also meant she was more trustworthy to leave at home alone. Though they did still ask their neighbor Seb to keep an eye on her, and Jo and Seb get along quite well.
After the ILITW timeline though, Jo would maintain her ability to fend for herself, but would also strengthen her closeness with her parents.
Harper Addison's bio dad Franklin (ILB) got her mom Marie Vance pregnant without a care in the world for her or the baby (Harper). The whole family relationship was incredibly messy– he always acted resentful towards Harper and Marie. But young Harper barely picked up on it. It wasn't until when Harper was 7 that he basically said the silent parts out loud and decided to walk out on them, leaving them with very little.
Soon after, Marie would marry Todd Fisher and they'd have Elliot together. Todd was a much better dad, and Marie and Addison were both much happier with him. They were absolutely a match made in heaven. As Harper got older, they would be able to look back and realize all of Franklin's red flags, but they were ultimately able to move past that shitty life.
Bonus fun fact: Harper was originally "Harper Addison Vance" at birth. Addison is the middle name that they sometimes like to use interchangeably or adjacent to their first name. When Marie and Todd married, they used Vance as the family name, but Harper insisted on hyphenating Vance and Fisher for her own last name to signify Todd being a real part of their family, as her real dad and not just her step-dad. So the canon game refers to them with the last name Vance because that's technically their legal birth name, but their official last name is Vance-Fisher.
Anyways, they were a very happy and healthy family. Unfortunately... we all know what happens in the first chapter of ILB. Needless to say, it was VERY devastating for Harper.
Shortly thereafter, their grandpa Arthur would become their legal guardian figure. And as per the canon game, that was quite a mess. Initially, he was grouchy and rude and overly strict, massive whiplash from their fun-loving mom and dad. But soon, he did start to try and be nicer to them, leading Addison to decide they did want to try and like their grandpa too. But then there was the whole shit with The Society and Arthur having betrayed her grandma Josephine, which definitely gave them mixed feelings about their relationship with him afterwards.
Adelaide's relationship with her Dad Gary (ROD) is covered better here.
Jordan's moms (HSS:Prime) have trained her in financial skills and social networking skills from a very young age, insistent that those were important skills to have in order to be able to make a stable living for herself in the future. However, they were also very supportive of whatever Jordan wanted to do with her future. Those skills were for preparing her for unknown possibilities, not for force-lining her into a specific job. So they were very supportive when Jordan wanted to use those skills to found a new high school with a promise to be accepting to all, rather than the generic business job she was originally expecting to pursue.
15. What's one childhood memory that has stuck with your muse over the years? What's it significance to your muse now?
Evie (OG HSS): There are way too many to choose from for her lol. But one that I think would be significant to talk about is Evie learning the story of her parents.
Jo (ILITW): That one premium scene in Ch 16 where, at the memorial, they'll play this tape recording of 10 years ago with all of the friend group playing around together at MC's house. Jo had a distant memory of it as she got older, and she didn't like remembering it.
After seeing the actual recording, though, it would eventually start to become even more painful to remember due to her guilt of letting Noah sacrifice himself. But years later, she would be able to come to terms with her guilt and look back more fondly on those memories.
Harper Addison (ILB): There was this one scene in ILB canon where MC could describe one year on halloween with Elliot and their parents. I don't fully remember it, and I think I lost my screenshots for it. But it went something like: MC and Elliot were unable to go trick-or-treating for some reason, so the parents set up this mini neighborhood thing and they did trick-or-treat with that. I think that's definitely important to her.
I also headcanon that the family's first Hannukah together when Addison was about 8 was very significant and meaningful to them.
After the death of her parents, those memories would be painful to remember. But eventually they are able to remember it even more fondly than before.
Dick Ryder (DLS): His first preschool play, which was about the different colors and what colors they made. Apparently the audience especially loved his performance. And that made him happy. Even for a play about colors, his acting stood out somehow. And that was the kickoff to his acting career dream.
At one point in his teens, he did have a short phase where it seemed silly to him. That he started to pursue acting because of his exemplary acting in a preschool play about colors. But nowadays, he sees it as a reminder to not take the little things completely for granted.

In general, some biographies hint towards the contestants canon counterparts, such as the dream section for both Mary and Cameron basically being what Jo and canon Cameron were like. However, some biographies might foreshadow what will happen to the character in the competition…
Now for more specific stuff:
Brick’s chosen movie, Surge of Hassan, is based on the movie Sergeant Hassan
Her personality is modeled strongly off of her prototype design, as she sports as a more callous and brutish demeanor. Regardless, she’s still a momma’s boy!
Mary’s fav song, Summer and a Typhoon by Trolly Hell, references Spring and a Storm by Tally Hall
I wanted him to be the definition of a girl-failure but still have an interest in sports.
Staci’s fav music artist, Glad Donna, references Madonna
Staci’s fav movie, Rude Gals starring Reggie and Janelle as characters, references Mean Girls which has Janice and Regina as prominent characters.
Canon Staci’s biography mentions being a hairdresser, so that tiny trait is now a bigger part of her personality here. She embodies that judgey, gossip-loving stereotype of female hairstylists. Staci in canon also has a tendency to lie, so does this one, but is just more… convincing about it.
Mike’s fav movie, Earthdog Day, is based on the movie Groundhog Day.
Mike’s dream date, Lorrison Ellie, references Laurie Elliot, the voice actor of Jo who’s also a comedian.
Mike has DID still, and some parts of his biography allude to smiles alters…
Mike’s personality is inspired by Jimmy Two Shoes, since beta Mike looks a lot like Jimmy Two Shoes, who is another character his voice actor plays as. Jimmy is a cheerful and loving boy despite literally being a resident of hell, similar to how upbeat Mike is despite his…not-so-wholesome past. Also, Jim’s series is a light-hearted comedy show which is why Mike is a comedian.
The book Scott was talking about in the job section of his biography is Where The Red Fern Grows. While he acquires a raccoon army to hunt down two hounds, the books stars a boy and his two redhounds hunting down raccoons.
Prototype Scott has design elements from Canon Brick, so obviously I had to make Scott a cadet too! …Or so it seems.
Cam’s fav video game soundtrack, The Myth of Link, is based on The Legend of Zelda.
Cameron mentioning that scrib has bad luck but that not deterring zaps is based on how his official prototype design resembles like Mickey n Jay, two boys from RR who are quite unlucky but still remain determined to achieve their goals in the competition.
This Cameron is much more adventurous and bold than their canon self. Cameron’s story in the official show tells the tale of a boy who literally and metaphorically gets out of his bubble and learns more about the outside world and how to accept and live in it. This Cameron instead is FAR from sheltered though still retains the Og’s curious, analytical, and socially inept nature. Also, instead of being a nerd, they’re more of a geek!
